Love, hope and joy Over the last ten months I have been surrounded with the love and support of family and friends following the sudden death of my husband. The grief which I have experienced has at times brought me very low, but the love of others has kept me going. With the clocks springing forward at the end of March comes the certain knowledge that spring has arrived. For a while now, there have been signs all around us in nature that fill us with the hope that warmer and longer days are not too far away and that summer is just around the corner. Today a toddler gave me a great big cheeky smile. He rushed to greet me with his sticky hands covered in the remains of his afternoon snack. His laughter and joy were infectious and he made the world a happier place.
Love, hope and joy: all three make life worth living. As Easter approaches, I am reminded again of the love of Jesus that took him to the cross, the hope that he brought to the lives of so many by bringing wholeness to body, mind and spirit, and the joy his disciples experienced on that first Easter Sunday when he appeared to them. This was good news – he made their lives worth living. I believe it can still be good news for us. Today, the promise of Jesus for each one of us is still one of love, hope and joy, even in the midst of the struggles and stresses of life, and even in the darkest times. May we all know this good news at Easter time.

Population Matters (after AGM) Tue 10 April, 7.45pm, Wen Library Room The AGM of Chiltern Humanists is an opportunity to reflect on the past year's activities, quiz the committee and to discuss how the Group should develop in the future. Local Suffragette Walks Thursday 12 April, 10.30am Frances Bedford, a member of the South Australia Parliament and historian of the suffragette movement, will be visiting Wendover and will be at my home, 43 Dobbins Lane, on Thursday 12 April. Frances has a special interest in Muriel Matters, a colleague of Emmeline Pankhurst and would like to meet anyone interested in the movement. She will be taking part in at least one of several suffragette walks in Buckinghamshire (including Wendover, Aylesbury, Great Missenden, High Wycombe). Sadly for her, she will miss the April 19 100th anniversary of the Aylesbury Suffragette prison protests.

Calling all Gardeners Saturday 5 May, 10-1, Gt Miss Mem Hall Now that Spring is upon us we invite all the keen gardeners among you to visit our Plant and Produce Market. Stock up on a wide range of reasonably priced plants and raise funds for your local wildlife trust. Other stalls include delicious home made cakes and preserves, second hand books, pre-loved garden tools and Wildlife Trust gifts and information. Admission is free, refreshments are available. Support the Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust which looks after eighty reserves and is deeply involved in the fight against HS2. Precious areas could be destroyed and the habitat of the very rare Bechstein's bats cut in two - we must raise the funds to prevent this!

On May 5, 6 and 7 the Chilterns MS Centre will be holding the annual Land's End to John O'Groats (static) cycle ride at World's End Garden Centre. St Mary’s Celebrates Saturday 5 to Monday 7 May The weekend, come rain or shine, promises to be bursting with family fun and entertainment. Groups throughout the village are entering floral exhibits. For the musically minded, there will be performances from local schools, professional musicians and the St Mary’s music group. Two and three dimensional art, will be on display. Sunday (the 6th) will focus on family activities with a BBQ, bouncy slide and children’s activities. Tea, cakes and coffee will be served on all three days and a ploughman’s lunch on both Saturday and Monday. In addition, a plant & book sale, a raffle & tombola, and Pimms & local ale will all be available for sale. And finally, don’t forget the special events taking place on the Saturday and Sunday evenings. The AMC Big Band will be performing on the Saturday 5 May from 7.30pm and we are looking forward to an

In order to answer your calls as quickly as possible it really helps if you ring after 9am for any routine appointment requests or if you would like to arrange for your GP to ring you after surgery in a non urgent capacity. We also ask patients to ring back after
12pm for test results. This is because we receive results electronically from Stoke Mandeville in the morning. This means that the GP will access the results after their morning surgery. Once the GP has viewed the result they then put a comment on them for Reception to give to the patient when they ring in. If there is something in the result that is unusual or not normal the GP will contact you directly to discuss the next step.

Wendover Celebrates Monday 4 June Wendover Celebrates will see the biggest event Wendover has witnessed since the millennium. On 4 June, Wendover will celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics. The celebration will begin at 12 noon with a Carnival Parade from Ashbrook Park to Wendover Campus (formerly Wendover House School), where

HS2 At a packed Memorial Hall meeting on 25 February, residents were updated on Wendover HS2's three strategic goals: our priority, which is the cancellation of HS2 through the Chilterns; but if that fails, in spite of the evidence and logical arguments against HS2, a fully-bored tunnel right through the Chilterns; and fair and improved compensation.
Brian Thompson from the Wendover HS2 Action Group explained how the green tunnel through Wendover had been lengthened, and pointed out the benefits that this would bring to large areas of Wendover. He argued that a longer tunnel was necessary to protect the rest of the village, and that a bored tunnel right through the Chilterns was a better option.
Thomas Crane from the HS2 Action Alliance gave an overview of the legal case that the Alliance proposes to bring on behalf of all the communities affected, and urged residents to give generously to the legal fund. He stressed that this was our one chance to stop HS2 in the courts. Martin Tett gave an update on the separate legal challenge being pursued by the councils of the 51M Group, and Hilary Wharf spoke warmly about the Government’s failure to provide the fair compensation scheme that was promised for those affected by HS2. Residents were asked to write to the Transport Secretary Justine Greening, calling for a fully bored tunnel through the Chilterns if HS2 goes ahead, and the fair compensation scheme promised by David Cameron.
Wendover HS2 is delighted to announce that we have now reached the initial target of £30,000 for our legal fighting fund, which is our contribution towards the legal costs of taking the Government to court by Judicial Review. Our sincere thanks go out to all those who have contributed. The fighting fund will stay open for the time being. We are also most grateful to the Parish Council for a grant of £5,000.

I write as a frequent visitor to this lovely part of the Chilterns - and a former Chiltern resident - regarding the alterations to Wendover Station. Having read the letter from Sean & Helen Meier I fully sympathise with them and their Forest Close neighbours. The visual assault upon an individual approaching the station or pausing to take in a general view of the area is nothing less than shocking - what on Earth has happened to allow such a foul piece of architectural vandalism to proceed? One wonders if the Parish Council would like to comment on this affair - I should be most interested to hear what they knew of the plans prior to its inception. The whole appendage seems to me to be wrongly sited, poorly thought out, an unnecessary intrusion upon those living adjacent, and a sad indictment of the careless approach to such "improvements". Is it too much to expect Chiltern Railways and others to take into consideration the views of local residents? As far as those who desperately needed improved access are concerned, it seems to me that the distance from the safe parking area to this new bridge and lift is far further and more awkward than that of the original bridge. One wonders why the new lifts could not have been placed alongside the old (rather beautiful) original bridge and hence adjacent to the car park? I think some explanation is required from all
those who knew of this work, and if nothing else the Parish and those others should now put into place some form of green screening, and/or redesign this awful erection. Perhaps the designer thought it looked nice on paper - well it may do in central Tokyo - but alas that person has permanently blighted a lovely village station, and some more. It doesn't fill me with confidence that the next railway project will proceed properly and with due concern for those living and appreciating the Chilterns and Wendover.

I echo the sentiments above. I was shocked when the lift was erected as was the Wendover Parish Council Planning Committee when representations were made by Mr and Mrs Meier at the meeting on 21 February. Whilst the Planning Committee understands that the Local Planning Authority cannot normally consider loss of view as an obstacle to development there was an expression of sympathy for the residents that had been affected by an overbearing ugly structure. A letter has been sent to AVDC expressing concerns that whilst there is no statutory requirement to notify or consult neighbours, or the Parish Council, WPC would have appreciated the opportunity to query the siting of the bridge and provide recommendations in support of residents comments. Wendover Many of you will be aware that BCC have decided that they can no longer afford to fund all the libraries in the county. They have therefore determined that a number of them must be ‘transferred to the community’ and become officially known as Community Libraries. Wendover is amongst those designated for such a change of status. There is no avoiding the fact that this move is driven by the perceived need to save money, but it is possible to put a positive slant on the envisaged changes by highlighting the positive effects of there being greater community involvement in running the local library. To this end a group of local residents, who understand the important part a thriving library can and should play in the life of a community, have come together to form the Wendover Community Library Committee. They have met regularly for a year, and the Committee is now in a position to let local people have an up to date picture of the current situation. The proposals put forward by the committee have been shared with BCC and they have received a positive endorsement. What follows is a brief description of the Committee’s proposals. The transfer of Wendover’s Library from County Library to Community Library will be staged over a period that could last up to two years, so that the risks associated with the
change can be reduced as much as possible. (Wendover will be the biggest, and therefore most complex, of the libraries scheduled for change.) The Community Library will operate from around July 2012. Importantly it will employ a Library Manager and a Library Assistant and these appointments will be made by the Bucks Library Service working with the Wendover Community Library Committee. The two professional staff will be supported by a team
of Library Volunteers, and, with continuing support from the County Library Service, one of the Library Assistant’s specific responsibilities will be for the training and ongoing support of the Volunteer Staff.
The volunteers will ‘sign up’ to be in the Library at specific times, which we anticipate will be weekly or fortnightly, each of perhaps two or four hours. There will be a range of specific volunteers’ duties, which will go from essential basic library work, most of which will of course involve working with customers, to running specific activities. Some volunteer staff, for example, may particularly wish to be involved in the various reading activities for children that are planned. Some may wish to ensure that

Library members of staff have a good cup of tea ready for their breaks! No one who feels that they can make a contribution to the Community Library project will be excluded. The Community Library will receive a grant from BCC, and various activities will continue to be funded by the County, (book supply, ICT for example), but it will be essential for the Community Library to generate income. To this end we will maximise the earning capacity of the building, we will apply for any grants that are, or become, available, and we will organise various activities. Amongst these will almost certainly be book sales, which we envisage will be held in the Library Conference Room on certain Saturdays. Given the sad closure of the Wendover Bookshop this particular venture illustrates how necessary income generation can also serve to enhance Wendover as a thriving community. Some readers will be aware that we have already had our first meeting of those who have expressed an interest in doing voluntary work in the Community Library. Posters have been placed around Wendover advertising the fact that we are still on the lookout for volunteers. If you think you might be interested and want to know more, please be in touch. There are straightforward forms to complete in the library, and a box into which they can be put. It is important to know that there will always be one or two professional staff working in the Library supporting and giving advice to volunteer staff. Treble Express – 2300cc powered wheelchair motorcycle sidecar – Motopodd Ltd. A custom built motorcycle and sidecar to give a young disabled motorcycle fan, the closest possible experience to riding a motorcycle. In late Spring 2011 Luke’s dad, Alan contacted me with a simple enquiry. Would it be possible to fabricate a sidecar that would take a heavy, (122kg) powered wheelchair? I thought about it and replied that basically, yes, it could be done and yes, I’d love to build it for him. You see, Luke can’t ignore his reason, he was born with cerebral palsy and will never be able to ride his own bike or even ride pillion. Luke has a deep passion for motorcycles and his only method of travel so far has involved driving his wheelchair into the back of a large converted car and spending the trip effectively in the boot. We exchanged a few emails and decided to meet up. I showed them some photographs of various sidecars that might spark some design ideas. Whilst we knew that this was going to be an extraordinary sidecar for it to be able to take Luke in his chair, we quickly established that
it also had to appear exceptionally cool and not look like any kind of invalid carriage.
We knew that if we were going to do this, we’d need a large, powerful bike. Luke and Alan decided to go ahead with the project after much discussion and Luke soon became the owner of a low mileage, 2006
Triumph Rocket III, bought from their local dealer. I sketched up an idea of what I thought the finished sidecar might look like and we agreed a complex and exciting specification. Not only would the sidecar be a unique and exciting design, but the bike would also be heavily modified. Luke was no sleeping partner during the whole design process, his ideas have shaped the design and specification from the start. I regularly receive messages asking if we can incorporate his latest idea into the design. Luke has his own set of Triumph Rocket instruments, speedo, rev counter etc., to help him achieve the full bike experience. Wendover Parish Council Meeting 12 March 2012 Wendover Library Chairman of Wendover Community Library Committee, Philip Mitchell, informed the meeting that the library was a crucial facility for Wendover and the committee had been formed to ensure that it stayed open. It was the largest of the libraries proposed for handover to the community and a plan involving a staged transfer over a period of two years from July 2012 had now been submitted to Bucks County Council for approval. The library would be staffed by a manager and an assistant together with a team of volunteers. Mr Mitchell said he was hopeful that it would stay open for the full twenty nine hours a week as at present and possibly for longer in the future. Grants Various applications for grants, including those from ‘Wendover Celebrates’ and Wendover HS2 Action Group, were considered by the Council under section 137 of the Local Government Act 1972 or other approved powers. Mr Dave Walls from the ‘Wendover Celebrates’ steering committee informed the meeting that they were stuck in a ‘vicious circle’ of not being able to market the event without funding and in the absence of further financial assistance from the Council, they might have to
downsize the event. Some Councillors expressed support for making a loan rather than a grant but were defeated by a narrow majority. Wendover HS2 Action Group had reduced the figure requested to help fund a judicial review from £15,000 to £5,000, but concerns were again expressed that the Council might be seen as duplicitous if it were to support such an action whilst also engaging in mitigation discussions. However, other Councillors argued that mitigation could go on side-by-side and it was important to do everything possible to resist HS2. As a potential compromise, it was suggested that a grant could be made to Wendover HS2’s general fund rather than specifically to support a judicial review.

Rozelle School of Dancing Congratulations to our dancers who performed in “Olymipia 2012” at the Grange School in February in aid of the PACE Centre in Aylesbury. The performers were aged between 2 and 80+ years! The dance styles varied from ballet through to street, and the music from classical to contemporary. We hope the audience was thoroughly entertained by our version of the Olympics.

Mid Bucks Beekeepers Association The theory part of our New Beekeepers course draws to an end on 2nd April, with over 40 attendees it has been a very successful course. Early in May the practical sessions start at the Association Apiary for both new and experienced beekeepers, the sessions are an excellent way to develop beekeeping skills. Anecdotal evidence from the members of the Association seem to indicate that colony losses this winter have not been as high as in previous years, this could be down to the less severe winter. If the weather of late March continues through April we should see the honeybee colonies grow, this can sometimes lead to swarming. The Association operates a free volunteer swarm collection service, if you need to report a swarm please go to www.mbbka.org.uk to verify it is honeybees and report it to our Swarm Officer.

Wendover Cricket Club Junior Section The junior outdoor season starts in April with coaching times as shown: New players, including those who are new to the sport, are always welcome. There will be a signing-on morning 11.00-12.00 on Saturday 21 April when subscriptions should be paid for all age groups. Wendover Youth Centre The centre offers an excellent facility for private functions and parties and is available to rent for one-off occasions or regular weekly events. The centre is now operated by a Management Committee due to the withdrawal of Bucks County Council funds back in August 2011. The Management Committee has set up a Limited Company with Charitable Status and has been successful in obtaining various grants to help fund the running of the Centre. Wendover Youth Club meets two nights a week (Tuesday and Thursday) and the Amazing Donkey meet on Friday evening. The Committee is working hard to make the Youth Centre a viable entity, and renting the space out to other clubs for events and parties. Behind the Scenes 1st Wendover Group has an Executive Committee made up of parents or people who wish to be involved with Scouting, but not necessarily in direct contact with the children. This includes the Chairman Charles Craft, Treasurer, Neil Gordon, & Secretary Rachel Cahill. In addition to these posts we have people that cover Gift Aid (Marilyn Payne), Standing Order Income or subs (Shirley Cameron), Minibus (Lynn Hatfield), Grants (Margaret Heald), Trustees (Peter Stride), Buildings (currently vacant) and Representative of the Playgroup, Jack In The Box (Tracey Baughan). All these people are responsible for looking after the Finance, Insurance, Buildings and Equipment. The uniform part (leaders and young people) of the Group is looked after by a Group Scout Leader (Nigel Smith) and each of the sections has a Leader, Assistant Leaders & occasional helpers. The programme is run by the sections and the award scheme is set by Scout HQ, and led by imaginative leaders. Chugging I am chairman of Charity Aid and have raised £250,000 with my street collecting volunteer group. I am actively opposed to chugging. If you do not want to interview me – feel free to use the quote below: Chugging is exploitative and dishonest. Independent research shows that chuggers keep more than the first £100 they get from a donor - £112 in the case of Cancer Research UK. The only reason chugging exists is that the public are not aware of the facts. This parasitic industry siphons off millions of pounds intended for charity work. Chuggers sign up 750,000 donors a year and are treating charity work as a profit-making business. Charities are lying when they say they get back £5 for every £1 they spend on it. None of them have been able to produce figures to justify this ridiculous claim and not one of them will agree to speak to me. admirable but without a variety of new businesses being attracted to Wendover surely we are in danger of turning our lovely village into a ghost town? Although considerably larger, Old Amersham is a classic example of how some of the larger retail chains can successfully sit alongside bespoke one-off stores and yet still provide an attractive destination for both locals as well as shoppers from further afield. Perhaps it is time to revise the rule book, embrace change where it’s relevant and welcome some diversity to the village.

Recycling Toner Cartridges and Mobile Phones David and Odile Pollard (39 Chiltern Road) are always happy to find empty toner cartridges of any size on their front doorstep. They put them in a box indoors supplied by the local Air Ambulance service. The cartridges will be recycled to benefit the Air Ambulance when the box is collected full. Mobile phones can be recycled in the same way. Epson cartridges are the tricky ones; the Air Ambulance cannot use them. The best solution we have found is to take them to Staples in Aylesbury, where they can be recycled to benefit Childline, and where, in addition, you receive a £1 voucher for every empty cartridge handed in.

The President of The Wendover Society Bryan Smith died suddenly but peacefully on Tuesday 28 February, the day after his eighty seventh birthday.
Bryan hailed from Yorkshire, a blunt speaking, forceful personality who did not suffer fools gladly. He came to live in Wendover as a Director of British Gas with an office in London. Along with his wife Patricia, he bought what had been Bucksbridge Farm, the farmhouse of which had newly been converted in to a rather splendidly located home alongside the chalk stream of the Heron Path. Heron Path House, as the new property was named, had extensive land on “interesting” rising ground at its back and to one side. Bryan set about landscaping and creating a garden of magnificent proportions, so much so that the garden was soon opened regularly for the charity National Gardens week. Bryan was the Director of British Gas responsible for the conversion of the country from “town gas” to Natural Gas and it was for the successful completion of this task that he was awarded his CBE. However, th is massive undertaking took its toll and he was forced to retire early with serious heart problems, eventually undergoing a
quadruple heart by-pass, which fortunately served him well during his long retirement.
As a “doer” Bryan was involved in many activities and business ventures but one of the causes he took very much to heart was the protection and preservation of Wendover as the small, charming historic market town where he had chosen to settle. He quickly became involved with The Wendover Society, formed originally to protect the extensive green verge along the Aylesbury Road between Wharf Road and the High Street which the Highway Authority wished to tarmac over to create more on-street parking! Bryan soon became Chairman of The Wendover Society and by dint of unflinching drive, sheer personality and an all powerful belief in what was right for Wendover made the Society a body to be trifled with or ignored at one’s peril, as the local Planning Authority and occasionally individuals learnt to their cost. He was an indefatigable fighter and was never daunted by seemingly impossible odds. In its heyday the Society’s membership topped 10% of the town’s population and was a model amenity and
conservation body held up as an example to other similar bodies by the National Civic Trust movement. Famously, under Bryan’s leadership, the Society won a High Court Injunction preventing AVDC from implementing planning approval awarded to a
developer that would have seen over a thousand houses inserted between Bryants Acre and Halton Lane on the land behind Ashbrook and up to the edge of the Wendover Arm Canal.
To this day the retention of a “village” scale to Wendover, in the face of enormous development pressure over the years, can be largely attributed to him. The fixing of the Metropolitan Green Belt and the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty boundaries tightly around the developed footprint of Wendover was his achievement; a legacy for which residents of our community will have cause to thank him for possibly generations’ to come.
A physically tall man, he stood tall amongst his contemporaries. It is unlikely that Wendover will see such a generous provider for and protector of the community very soon again. His passing is much to be regretted.

Anne was born in Prestwood and at two years old moved to Aylesbury with her Welsh parents when her father became a partner in Parrott and Coales. Anne started off at Lady Margaret School in Dobbins Lane, became a founder pupil at Prebendal School and finished off at St. Swithun’s School in Winchester, training to be a nursery school teacher at the Froebel Institute, Roehampton. She worked at Fairmile Nursery School in Aylesbury until she married John Holt in 1949. They were blessed with two sons, and Anne now has a grand daughter who after Durham University is training to be a lawyer - following in the footsteps of her grandfather and great grandfather, and a grand son at present studying Czech and Russian at Oxford University. The family lived in Aylesbury until John’s retirement from Parrott and Coales when they moved to Butler’s Cross and joined St Anne’s Church, Wendover. John was elected Chairman of the Pastoral Council and Anne became involved with the church music and liturgy. After John died in 2002, Anne moved to Wendover, and so qualified as a truly “Wendover Face”.
Over the years Anne has held var ious positions, such as Governor of Aylesbury Primary Schools and High School. She served for twenty years as a Magistrate on the Aylesbury Bench as well as holding the post of Secretary of the following:
1. Friends of St Mary’s Aylesbury, on whose behalf with her friend the late Margaret Roberton (of the Windmill, Wendover) inaugurated the weekly “Music at Lunchtime” Thursday concerts now in their thirty first year. 2. Catholic Women’s League, locally and at Diocesan level. 3. Society of St Gregory for Music and Liturgy. 4. Women’s World Day of Prayer. Anne has been a member of various committees including Wendover Music. For several years she was Parliamentary Reporter for the National Council of Women which involved reading the daily Hansard from Parliament which she found fascinating.

View from the chair As we move from Christmas to Easter I am reminded of my childhood thoughts, and lack of understanding I hasten to add, that our Lord could only have been three and half months old having been born at Christmas and dying at Easter. As Easter approaches, it means for the newly elected Parish Council, that we are approaching our first year in office. We hope that many people will come to our Annual Parish Meeting, to be held on Wednesday 18 April at 7.30pm in Wendover Memorial Hall, and help celebrate what has been happening in the last year. We have asked various organisations who have received grants or been involved with the Parish Council to come and give presentations which we hope you will find interesting. Refreshments have also been arranged and there will be a talk about refuse and recycling from Isabel Edgar Briancon, Refuse & Recycling Officer for AVDC. We hope to present you all with a good round up of what has been going on. Cllr Bob Lewis, our acting RFO and Committee chairs will be sharpening their pencils to ensure that the Budgets are all in line with the Precept and that you are getting value for money from the Community charge that you pay towards the running of Parish Council activities. HS2 The response to the request for views regarding a grant to HS2 was overwhelmingly in favour. To ensure there could be no unforeseen liability from supporting a Judicial Review £5000 was given to Wendover HS2 who will use the grant as they see fit.
Grants £5000 was awarded to Wendover Celebrates. The MS Centre received 10 bricks at £100 per brick to support their building project making a total of £1000. If you would like to contribute and ‘buy a brick’ contact: [email protected] £1,400 was awarded to Bucks Carers Wendover support group.

Clock Tower If you look carefully you will see that the Clock Tower has developed a slight lean. A structural survey has found that, although not dangerous at present, it is necessary to undertake structural repairs to the Bell Tower. This will be expensive but we are hoping to obtain grants for renovating the clock, rebuilding the wooden part of the tower and help with the structure.
