Alleluia! Christ is risen! Resurrection changes everything. Death does not get the final say on us, or our world. In Christ, God was reconciling the world to himself, and we are set free to love and live in freedom and in hope. The message of reconciliation has, in fact, been entrusted to us (see 2 Corinthians 5:16-21). When I think about Easter in those terms, I realize it has to make a difference in my life. How can it not? Reconciled in order to reconcile. Forgiven, to forgive. Loved, to love. It makes me think of good old Abraham and Sarah, who were blessed, to be a blessing (Genesis 12). One household in this congregation has been gripped by the joy and wonder of Gods blessing—and the joy and wonder of sharing that blessing with others—and wants to let the rest of us in on the fun. Funds have been donated to give to each household of the congregation to use and give away, in order to share and multiply the blessing in our community. There arent a lot of rules that go with this gift. If you decide to accept the $100 available for each household, you cannot spend the money on yourself. Its hoped that you wont just drop off the cash or send a check to some ministry or organization you support. Instead, these funds are intended to propel us into action, relationship and service. If you want to donate to the food bank, great. Go in, get a tour, find out how you can volunteer. Plug in at Love, INC, or Habitat for Humanity. Call Bridget Pitman at Family Promise, go check out the Day Center, and then use the money to buy and drop off needed supplies. Let your creativity run wild and then come back and tell us what you did. (Im planning to use the money to buy food to prepare for and serve at Katies Table at Lutheran Campus Ministry-MSU this month). Just imagine if every household in the congregation used the weeks of the Easter season (until the Day of Pentecost, May 19th this year) to rejoice in the resurrection and to BE a blessing to others.

One household in this congregation has been gripped by the joy and wonder of God’s blessing—and the joy and wonder of sharing that blessing with others—and wants to let the rest of us in on the fun. Funds have been donated to give to each household of the congregation to use and give away, in order to share and multiply the blessing in our community.

There aren’t a lot of rules that go with this gift. If you decide to accept the $100 available for each household, you cannot spend the money on yourself. It’s hoped that you won’t just drop off the cash or send a check to some ministry or organization you support. (I’m planning to use the money to buy food to prepare for and serve at Katie’s Table at Lutheran Campus Ministry-MSU this month).

Just imagine if every household in the congregation used the weeks of the Easter season (until the Day of Pentecost, May 19th this year) to rejoice in the resurrection and to BE a blessing to others.

Jesus lives. We have been blessed. And we get to be a blessing.

Joining my Alleluia! with yours,

Pastor Lindean

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ:

Every faithful caregiver who sits with victims of violence knows what we know – as God's church, we are called to reduce violence and should, in most cases, restrain ourselves from using violence. Whether or not statistics show that overall violence has declined in recent years, every person wounded or killed is a precious child of God.

As bishops of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, we lament the tragedy of gun violence in our country. We are grieved by the way violence threatens and destroys life. We affirm the current soul searching and shared striving to find a way to a better future.

While the church grapples with this call to reduce violence and make our communities safer, we recognize that before God we are neither more righteous because we have guns nor are we more righteous when we favor significant restrictions. Brokenness and sin are not somehow outside of us. Even the best of us are capable of great evil. As people of God we begin by confessing our own brokenness – revealed in both our actions and our failure to act. We trust that God will set us free and renew us in our life's work to love our neighbors.

In this time of public attention to gun violence, local communities of faith have a unique opportunity to engage this work. As bishops, we were thankful to recognize the many resources our church has already developed (see below). We begin by listening: listening to God, to Scripture, and to each other. Providing a safe place for people to share their own stories, together we discern courses of action. Together we act. And together we return to listening - to assess the effectiveness of our efforts to reduce violence.

In the Large Catechism Luther says, “We must not kill, either by hand, heart, or word, by signs or gestures, or by aiding and abetting.” Violence begins in the human heart. Words can harm or heal. To focus only on guns is to miss the depth of our vocation. Yet, guns and access are keys to the challenges we face.

We recognize that we serve in different contexts and have different perspectives regarding what can and should be done. But as

we live out our common vocations, knowing that the work will take many forms, we are committed to the work of reducing and restraining violence. This shared work is a sign of our unity in Christ.

We invite you, our sisters and brothers, to join us in this work:

The work of lament – creating safe space for naming, praying, grieving, caring for one another, and sharing the hope in God’s promise of faithfulness

The work of moral formation and discernment – listening to scripture, repenting, modeling conflict resolution in daily life, addressing bullying, conducting respectful conversations, and discerning constructive strategies to reduce violence

The work of advocacy – acting to address the causes and effects of violence

Knowing that we are not saved by this work, we undertake it trusting in Christ Jesus, who laid down his life for the world and who calls us to be peacemakers, to pursue justice, and to protect the vulnerable.

In this, as in all things, Christ is with us. Thanks be to God.

Learning Opportunities

Adult Forum Sunday Mornings -- “Blessed to be a Blessing” will be our featured theme for adult forum during April and May. Christ the King members and friends participate in many outreach ministries throughout our community and county. We would like to take the time during adult forum to highlight those outreach ministries as we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ during the season of Easter.

Family Promise of Gallatin Valley provides housing to displaced families in our area. Every summer Christ the King serves as a host site for families who find themselves without a home and a safe place to sleep at night. Our host dates are June 2-16 and July 14-28 this year. Learn more about the issues of poverty in our area that cause families to lose secure shelter. Get excited about an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of neighbors who need a safe place to sleep and a friendly place to eat.

“Blessed to be a Blessing”

Christ the King has been supporting the work of Gallatin Valley Food Bank for many years. During the recession of 2008-2012 GVFB saw a tremendous increase of requests for food assistance from residents of the Gallatin Valley. Come and learn how your gifts of food, money, and time volunteering can help GVFB feed hungry neighbors. All those boxes of cereal and cans of soup that CtK collects each year make a difference in the lives of neighbors in need.

“Blessed to be a Blessing”

Bozeman Community Cafe, a joint venture between the Gallatin Valley Food Bank, HRDC, and area churches and businesses has been serving warm meals to hungry people during the dinner hour seven days a week, twelve months out of the year. Christ the King serves dinner at the cafe on the first Sunday of every month. Learn how the cafe was started and how it is making a difference in the lives of hungry people and servant people in the Gallatin Valley.

“Blessed to be a Blessing”

Love In the Name of Christ (Love INC) is an umbrella ministry of forty-four churches in the Gallatin Valley. Love INC helps the local churches do ministry by pooling resources from its supporting congregations to meet the needs of people who find themselves in tough times. Come and learn about the clothing store that is run in Belgrade to help clothe folks who are down and out. Come and learn about the

Personal Care Pantry run by volunteers at Bozeman United Methodist Church. Who knew that the love of Jesus could be conveyed by a case of toilet paper? Come and learn how the workshop “Finding Financial Freedom” helps individuals and families create and keep a budget when times are tough.

NRIT Offers Continuing Education Event

The Northern Rock-ies Institute of The-ology (NRIT), an outreach of the Montana Synod, is offering Many Gen-erations — One Church, a continu-ing theological edu-cation and lifelong learning event in the

area of Christian education and lifelong learn-ing.

How can a church engage all ages in learning, worship and leadership? Explore ways to struc-ture a learning environment for the youngest as well as the oldest in your congregation. Discov-er new ways to create a worship experience that connects all ages to God. Investigate the leadership challenges created when people from multiple age-specific frameworks vie for a voice in decision making.

Dr. Diane Shallue brings 22 years of congrega-tional experience in Christian education and Children, Youth and Family Ministry as well as her expertise in intergenerational ministry.

She is committed to intergenerational ministry as the best way to pass along faith in Jesus Christ. She currently serves as the Director of Christian Education and Small Group Ministries at University Lutheran Church of Hope in Min-neapolis and is the past-president of the Luther-an Association of Christian Educators. She is a commissioned Associate in Ministry in the ELCA and also brings two years of experience in teaching at Luther Seminary in the Educa-tional Leadership Department.

All clergy and laity participation is encouraged. Cost for non-pastor (laity) persons is $20 each if attending with a rostered pastor. Pre-registration is required (forms can be obtained in the church office). Lunch is on your own.

Pastor Lindean plans to attend this workshop on Thursday, May 2nd in Helena (St. John’s Lutheran, 1000 Helena Avenue) departing from Bozeman by 7:30am and returning around 4:30pm. If you are interested in attending please talk with Pr. Lindean.

Interested? Need more info? Talk with Pr. Lin-dean or Pr. Grant, and/or Ian or Leah Anderson.

One Book One CtK Christ the King council is introducing One Book One CtK (just like One Book One Bozeman). The church council would like everyone to read the same book this year. Help us choose a book that middle school youth through adults can read, comprehend and discuss. There will be a couple book club meetings for discussion. If you have an idea for a book please talk with Bob Eichenberger Sunday mornings or email him at [email protected].

Many thanks to all who donated funds to-ward the purchase of spring flowers for our sanctuary this Easter. They were beautiful!

To all who helped prepare the worship space and social hall for Holy Week and the Easter brunch. And all who provided food for the brunch as well as those who provid-ed candy for the Easter Egg Hunt.

Donations Sought For Love INC Theme Basket

Plant the Seed dinner (Love INC’s annual fundraiser).

The baskets are to be completed and turned in for display by the middle of April so please drop off your donations ASAP. Thank you.

Interested parties may also opt to sponsor a table of 8 at the dinner for $200, or purchase (reserve) a place at a table for $25/individual. Call the

church office if you are interested or need more information on the themed baskets and/or the dinner and reservations.

Prayer Shawl Ministry Prayer Shawl Ministry will meet Thursday, April 11th at 7pm in the Hastings Coffee Shop. This ministry has not only brought folks together to pray, stitch and fellowship, but has blessed many individuals with prayer shawls for a variety of

reasons, including illness and hospital stays, death of loved ones, graduations, etc. Please contact Jeanette Hughes if you have any questions: [email protected] or 570-7368. Or just show up at the coffee shop ready to knit or crochet, patterns are available.

One side note on the prayer shawls -- the knitters have made a variety of shawls and they have all been blessed during worship. If you know of anyone who may need, or would appreciate, having a prayer shawl, please take one from the rack in the entry area and give it to them. CtK will be blessing the shawls the third Sunday of every “odd” month (3, 5, 7).

There are usually 12-15 students in attendance for dinner and conversation (Lutheran Campus Pastor Tim Spring will lead the conversation). Interested in

Adopt-a-Highway for

Earth Day 2013! Earth Day 2013 is Monday, April 22nd, and on Sunday, April 28th, Christ the King invites you to participate in the annual highway clean up.

MSU Finals Week Goodie Grab Bags The end of the “spring” semester at MSU is coming quickly and soon students will be “cramming” for finals. CtK will distribute “goodie grab bags” to all MSU students attending worship on Sunday, April 28th.

To help with the bags, we are asking for donations of individually wrapped “snack” items: popcorn, candy bars, trail mix, fruit snacks, gum, chips, tea bags, “ramen” soups, etc. We will assemble the bags at 10am Friday, April 26th in the church library and all are welcome to help!

Shepherd Callers: A renewed ministry At the February CtK Council meeting it was agreed upon to give a new ministry a try at CtK to help us all feel better “connected” to each other. This new ministry is called Shepherd Callers, and even though it isn’t new to CtK it has not been used for the last 10 years.

The purpose of this ministry is to stay in contact with people who worship at Christ the King. A Shepherd Caller (volunteer) is assigned a list of people to call on the phone, once a month, to ask two main questions on behalf of the congregation: (1) How are you doing? (2) Do you have any prayer

requests? The person receiving the call will specify whether prayer requests are to be shared with pastors, prayer chain, or whole congregation.

These calls are intended to be friendly and brief, and to simply let people know that they are an important part of the CtK community of faith. They are not intended to be counseling calls or liaison calls between parishioner and pastors/council.

Shepherd Callers will be asked to make a one-year commitment to call the same list of people, and they will receive simple training and support regarding phone calls, submission of prayer requests, etc.

If you are interested in being a Shepherd Caller, or you have any questions about this ministry, please contact Bonnie Eichenberger, 570-2923, or [email protected].

April 2013 Christ Tidings 9

Not counting college assignments which

were mandatory, I’ve been writing letters to the

editor, poems and essays for three generations-

-seriously for the past 20 years. Our pastor at

Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in

Reno, NV, approached me in December, 1992

about writing a short piece for the Shepherd’s

Voice, the equivalent of our Christ’s Tidings. He

said I had some provocative ideas; actually he

later called me an “icon blaster.” Generally I

would call it writing or thinking out loud. After

my recent letter to the editor on the 2nd

Amendment and guns, my neighbor gave me

four pages of documented information about

guns that agreed with what I said. The neighbor

said he didn’t write a letter as he didn’t want to

get shot. Funny because 15 years ago

someone asked my eldest son if he was a

cause person like me. He replied that he wasn’t

and that I could get shot if I wanted. In any

case, no one ever told me to stop. I wrote for

LCGS until about five years ago when others

picked up the task, and I’ve been writing for CtK

for over 13 years. I haven’t counted, but doing

at least ten essays a year I would be at 200 now

plus about 75 letters, columns and editorials for

the Chronicle. Whereas I retired to do art, I

actually am a more prolific writer.

Although a big reader, being an English or

Literature major never occurred to me. When I

took Art History my professor asked me why I

didn’t major in art and as I recall, I said it was

because I wanted to be a doctor. I didn’t know

at the time that being a generalist ( MD and

philosophically) could give me a broad

experience leading to writing--also an ego that

makes me think what I write has merit and is

worth reading. The saying by Alexander Pope

(1688-1744) in An Essay on Criticism, “Fools

rush in where Angels fear to tread.”, may well

apply to me when it comes to asking questions.

I do learn from experience and as the years

have passed I’ve had more people say they

were glad I asked a question that they were

afraid would seem silly. Speaking up for the

down-trodden, which in my mind is following

Jesus, is necessary. I see it as if not me, who

then? Not doing it is a big sin of omission. If

we pay careful attention we notice that it’s

always the poor who are blamed--they become

the scapegoats.

Somehow I think expressing myself on paper

was an evolution. Since I never throw away

anything I write, I’m sure the first brief paper I

wrote in Freshman English at St. Olaf is still

around, but I haven’t seen it for 20 years. I

played frosh football at St. Olaf as a defensive

tackle, not effectively, mind you. I weighed 138

pounds and spent most of my time on my back

observing the cleats of 220 pound offensive

lineman--even they were small then. I decided

to write about it. Miss Jacobson, my professor,

wrote a red D+ on the paper then, apparently

taking pity, changed it to a black C+. The red

mark erased poorly and remained as a scar.

I’ve thought of that as I write over the years.

Writing should be disciplined and honest. It

forces me to think and it’s a way of bouncing

ideas off others. Reading old essays lets me

see how my thinking changes. Talking can be

sloppy and while tall men are more

commanding, short men can be meek. I tend to

be feisty having a small man syndrome.

Thinking fast and speaking rapidly also makes it

easy to be a bully with words, and I am guilty of

that, too. It disturbs me, but it’s true. I don’t

always like what I am, but my essays afford me

opportunity to change and grow.

Strictly speaking, the term essay applies to

informal writing that strongly reflects the

personality of the author (World Book 1967).

Because it is of limited length it requires cutting

irrelevant thoughts. One grows to realize that

not every thought is a gem to be treasured.

Although I write from a point of view, I do

research to be as accurate as possible which

actually can change my view. My goal is to

write with logic, common sense and

compassion in a way that’s thought provoking

and fun to read. Sometimes I quiver with

uncertainty. In all cases I write from the heart. I

hope you find them useful. I appreciate

constructive comments both negative and

positive, and thank you for your words of

support.
