Financial Overview

February 20, 2014• Picnic Pointe – Over the last month there have been questions from, and

discussions with, members and board members alike regarding aspects of the planned Picnic Pointe renovation, such as design options, necessity of the additional cooking area/building, necessity of a restroom, pending design of the main pavilion structure, landscaping options, and that the overall long-range plan for Picnic Pointe should be considered before any changes are made. There have been additional suggestions and ideas that warrant further review and discussion, some of which may well result in better design, lower cost, and improved use of Picnic Pointe for members.

From these suggestions and discussions with members and several Board members alike, it is agreed that the best option is to postpone the Picnic Pointe project, leaving the approved funding in reserves for now, and to revisit the entire plan for Picnic Pointe by appointing an Ad Hoc committee to work with the GM to come up with a plan that could be presented to the Board for approval. It is suggested that the Ad Hoc committee be made up of two Board members and three at-large members. The committee would then coordinate Town Hall meetings to assist with member input, gather information, propose a plan for Picnic Pointe, hold Town Hall meetings for review of plan proposals, and submittal to the Board for approval of the project in the summer of 2015.

• Parcel5–Thisundevelopedparcelofland,justtotherightofthemaingate entry to the Landings, has been somewhat discussed from time to time as to what use it might serve the community. Ideas have included Assisted Living facility, tennis courts, pickle ball courts, gardening, park, dog park, sports area (combination tennis/pickle ball/basketball), and others. There was some work done in this regard years ago under the auspices of the BIG Committee, but to date no real plan has been put forth as to what should be done when. Members wonder what, and when, we will do something with this property that is sitting vacant rightnexttoourentrance.

In order to move this forward, I would like to propose that another Ad Hoc committee be formed to pick up where the BIG Committee left off and gather member input, formulate options, and present to the membership via Town Hall meetings and present to the Board options for eventual development of Parcel 5 that will best serve the members and the Landings Community.

LADIES 9 HOLERS DID IT AGAIN” Since the beginning of 2014 the Nine Hole League has been busy

with several golf lunch or brunch undertakings. We’d like you to know that the “Member Guest Golf and Brunch” had a terrificresponsewith76golfersand4guestsforlunchonly. The theme for the day: “Fifty Shades of Pink” raised money for Breast Cancer. The money was raised by selling pink ribbons wrapped individually to be used by the golfers inasurprisegamewhichdelightedthegolfersandbenefited

“the Komen Foundation of SWF. The main objective of the “Pink” theme was to raise awareness of all, to the need for BreastCancerResearchandPrevention.Alltheprizeswerepink, the decorations were pink and Chef Ted presented a lovely array of pink items to add to our bacon-egg brunch. The 9 Hole Ladies had great fun and were happy to send a nice check from our “Pink Brunch.” The Committee: Dee Bellar, Pat Groetsch, Bev Reeves, Carolyn Souders, and Peg Thompson thank all of those for participating.

I am pleased to report that the LYGTC is financially stable, growing, and continues to develop as a bundled community consistent with competitive alternatives in the greater southwest Florida area. While the community celebrates 35 plus years, the last 5 have been a renaissance period that has brought new life and arenewedprofileacrossmultipledisciplines. Most important to a large cross section of our membership is afinanciallysolidoutlook.Revenuesforthelastfiscalyearwere$8.544M,approximately5.4%overbudget.Yeartodatethetrendcontinueswithrevenuesexceedingbudgetbyapproximately6%.Wearemanagingourcurrentoperatingexpensesatlessthanthe2008-09 budget which followed a period of 5 years of no increases to the monthly dues structure. Economy of scale in the areas of purchasing, insurance, and outsourcing, together with disciplined spending controls, are the principle drivers for this success. Our reserves are consistent with our short term requirements, but care mustbegiventonotcompromisetheseresourcesasweexperienceda few years ago. Our debt service continues unchanged over the past year and is scheduledtobepaidoffin2022,approximately9monthsearly.Iappreciateandapplaudourfinancecommitteefortheirsignificantcontributionandmostrecentvoteofconfidence. The volatile housing market has favored us this past year with 82 sales, 17 more than the previous year and $390.000.00 of capital contributions. This change of direction bodes well for enhancing our reserve assets. Of equal importance is the infusion of new members, many of whom have pushed us into a higher percentile of senior membership. It also strikes me that within the renaissance period I previously mentioned, which embraces a renovated Helm Club, new cart barn, several new marina docks, 14 new tennis courts, a complete makeover of our golf course, and many landscaping enhancements, has contributedmeasurably to the influxofnewowners and a rebirth for all members. TheentirescopeofwhatIhavejustverybrieflysummarizedhasalso undergone a complete rewrite of our business and community documents that embrace statutory law within our articles of

Not to be forgotten are the many volunteers, too many to mention here, whounselfishlydonatemanyhoursoftheirtimeonsevendifferent committees to promote a higher quality of life for all of us. To each of you, I say thank you on behalf of all members. And also to our staff who you were just introduced to, who too often hear our complaints, and too seldom, our kudos for a job well done. Among these folks are the administrative staff that as we speak, are busy keeping the wheels of this community turning. A special thank you to Chere, Laura, and Michele. Our partnership with Coral Hospitality has been a cornerstone of the renaissance, and it has been much more than a convenience ofbusiness.Countlesstimesinthepast4years,wehavebenefittedfrom their experience, wisdom and counsel.Mike Cloutier,Linda Mitchell and Chris Schaeffer have always been available, understanding, and willing participants for any support necessary to our governance. Thanks to each of you many times over. A name less familiar to most members is Jason Mikes, our legal counsel. Without Jason’s background support, the Landing would be on a tightrope without safety net. Jason operates in an environment that if he goes unnoticed, has served us well. And he certainly has …… thank you Jason. Additionally, a thank you to our general manager, Doug Marcotte. Doug wears many hats in a variety of settings. He has proventohaveastrongfinancialacumentogowithsolidprojectmanagement skills. Most of our big ticket items are completed under budget which has enabled us to complete initiatives not originallyscheduledorplannedwithoutsacrificingotherprojectsand programs. Thank you, Doug. And thank you as well, to our members for their ongoing support and encouragement. Before closing, I want to acknowledge and thank two of our current board members, Pat Daniels and Steve Maillard who have served the Landings community with commitment and dedication. Their absence will not go unnoticed, and their many contributions arepennedintoourarchives.Thankyouboth!

Finally, on a personal note, I would like to thank the many who have helped me along the way, and there are very many of you. I have accumulated many debts. Thanks to our boards, past and present for their diligence and service, too often taken for granted. In a few minutes we will be seating a new board andanewslateofofficers.Iappreciatetheopportunitythatwasgiventomeandhaveveryhighexpectationsthatthenextandfutureboardswillmovethiscommunityforwardexponentially.Theywill be challengedwith redefining responsibility andaccountability in concert with the demands of a changing economy, social, anddemographiclandscapes.Recognizingandunderstanding the proper balance between want versus need, will be paramount. Negotiating the well-traveled pathways that most often lead to familiar destinations, resulting in the status-quo, is no longer acceptable. The vision for this community and its members must be groundbreaking and proactive with a good measureofdisciplineandforbearance.Weenjoyadiversifiedmembershipwithlikeexpectations.Findinganequitablebalancewill not come without due consideration, but necessary. I wish the new board the energy, good health and wisdom to make it happen! This concludes my report……….. thank you!

Harbortown

Here we are in April and most of our wintertime friends and relatives have

returned to their summer abodes and we are starting to settle into our off season regimen that includes two-fers at local restaurants and being able to get to the stores without a half hour drive. This Season has been remarkable for its chilly weather, as last summer was for its searing temperatures, we guess the Farmer’s Almanac was pretty close in their predictions for these climate variations. While preparing for a cruise with friends, Paul Zucker, who is best described by his lovely wife Joann, as “ A Squirrel on Crack “went and broke his ankle. With the hospital in Miami wanting to admit him or send him home, he sucked it up, and in a mad dash to catch the ship before it departed, took off in a cab and managed to arrive at the pier as the ship was throwing off brow lines for departure. Not ashyfellowbyanymeans,Paulflagsdownapoliceofficerandenlistshisaidinstoppingthevessel, withsirenscreaming, lightsflashingandallHolyHellbreaking around them, the Captain stops his departure to allow our gallant voyager aboard. The rest of the trip was watching the seas through his porthole or on the lanai, but, in the end, a great time was had by all. Paul will NOT be seen on the tennis Courts or jogging around Harbortown for the rest of season. Good News from Raoul, our globe trotting saurian, he checked in from Sochi, where he is enjoying the Olympic pageantry, after failing to qualify for aerial Half-Pipe Snowboarding, where he was the overall winner at Aspen in early December. He will be off to Egypt this month to visit his half cousin Achmed, the Nile alligator. As a gentle reminder for the seasonal owners, remember to check your water line shut offs before you leave, that’s all you need to have is a leaking line that drips and a return to a home that has become a cave for growing mushrooms, or worse. The pool party was another great get-together for the Harbortown folks, the Valentine’s Day motif was hosted by Dolly and Bob Dalton, and the party goers had several sumptuous dishes to partake of along with the beverage of their choice. We still need more people to step up and host these soirees, As there is a minimum of work involved to make a successful party, sign up and help in making your Village a community. As an informational aside, Harbortown has its own website now, courtesy of our management Company, but so far only two (2) people have taken advantage of this added tool for keeping up with Village happenings. It was bright and sunny morning as we rang the bell of 4671 S. Landings Drive, the

winter home of the Judge Richard Rosenbaum and his wife Judy. As usual, we caught them in full flight, getting ready to attend their granddaughterDalia’sBatMitzvahinPotomac,Maryland.Age isn’t exactly slowing themdown. Despite being in the middle of packing for this 4 day trip north, they took time to seat us in their comfortable lanai porch overlooking the 15th green, and shared some of their story with us. Their life together began with a series of brush-offs from Judy, a perpetually busy bacteriologist who worked at the University of Rochester Medical Center: “Please call me back,” she would say to an eager Dick who thought “What a brush-off.” It wasn’t until several months later that he met her at a New Year’s party and they really discovered each other. As always I’m shocked when the beginning of the month rolls around, and once again

I’m under pressure to knock something out for theHappyLandings!Yikes, you’d think I’dlearn….so here goes. It was an especially busy month for those who golf in the village. Last month ended with Martini’s on the Green, and this February started with the 9 Holers Member-Guest. There are a bunch of Cove gals that golf with the 9 Holers, and I was fortunate to be invited to participate by Ann Fleming from Trawler. It was a lot of fun followed by a great breakfast. My team wasn’t in the money but I believe a coupleladiesfromourvillagewere!Congrats! NextcametheLMGAStagDay.OnceagainIwasluckyenoughtohavethe honor of being one of the Beer Cart Girls. My normal cohort in crime, Helen Amy, was unable to attend, so Annie Boyd from Windjammer stepped in. We had a great time, those guys are a bunch of fun, and really seem to enjoy the day. Many Thanks to Gary Suhadolnik for inviting me to participate. Oh by the way,Garyhas“throwndownthegauntlet”!Hetoldmethathehasputtogethera stellar golf team from Windjammer, with the intent of beating Mariners Cove intheInter-Villagegolfchallenge.Sowiththatinmind,practiceupkids! Then we had the Sunday Couples scramble. What a great turn out, so many in fact that they scheduled a morning and an afternoon session. In the afternoon group, Ron and Helen Amy golfed with Dee Driscal and her partner,cominginsecondwithascoreof42,greatjob! In more sports news, the Tennis Club Championships were held recently and 2 of our neighbors ended up in the winner’s circle. Diane Dupuis, along with her partner Rosann Lamore of Windjammer, won the 6.0 division. Pat Benner and her partner, Ann Croft of Harbortown, were runners-up in the 6.0 division. As I’m not coordinated enough to play tennis, I’m not around the courts much. If anyone from the village has any additional tennis news

From an acorn mighty oaks are born. A tiny bubble from the earth can create a giant

river. An egg, with loving care, produces a soaring bird. Enter in 1935 one Robert Herbst. Minneapolis, Minnesota was called home and later a “Golden Gopher” 1957 graduate from the University of Minnesota. Not satisfied with one degree but a double degree, Forest Management as well as Wildlife Management. Bob Herbst set off on his career. His travelling companion was “Evie” (Evelyn) his wife also a Minnesota graduate in Home Economics. Three childrenandthreegrandchildrenfindBobandEvie (after travelling the world) residing in Annandale, Virginia. Trawler Village gives the couple a quiet retreat from the turbulent world of Washington, D.C. and Minnesota politics. “My family tree was Lutheran. My Great Grandmother in 1887 brought9children fromGermany.Sixboys, allofwhombecameLutheran ministers, and three girls who married Lutheran ministers. I jumped ship and chose not to go into the ministry but rather a career in taking care of God’s creations.” Bob is an avid sportsman and conservationist. Bob’s credentials, if made of metal would weigh so heavily on any chest that you would walk in a stooped position. Minnesota is called “The Land of 10,000 Lakes.” Bob says, “actually there 14,231 lakes.” Bob worked in Forest Management for the state for 6years.PayinghisduesBobplantedtrees,foughtforestfires,cleanedstreams and rivers, “it was all in a days work” said he. Lighthouse

This month marks a changing of the guard in Lighthouse Village. As the new Happy

Landings correspondent I hope to keep up the good work done by JoceLyne Jahn for the past several years. My husband, Frank, and I love living in Lighthouse and look forward to the time when we are fully retired and can enjoy life in The Landings. For now, Frank works in Ft. Lauderdale and I will return to teaching full time in the fall. In late February, our brother in law visited from Chicago. He happily left behind the record breaking cold for a week in sunny Florida. Highlights of his visit were a boat ride, courtesy of John Leonette and Pat Tritto, and a triptotheEverglades.Wetooka“Mangrovetour”onasixpassengerboatthat can only be described as magical. John Leonette has been busy on the golf course, recently getting a hole inoneon5! JoceLyne Jahn celebrated her 62nd birthday on March 1st with her good friends Kurt & Sharon Nordqvist and Doug & Carol Lesbirel at Angelina’s. It was a joyous celebration. 1958, they now have four children, with twelve grandkids: of Judy, above all, says Dick, “I know that she’s the best thing that ever happened to me.” Judy continues a life of service as a docent at the Rochester Museum and Science Center. Quite a testimony for more than 50 years of marriage and from Dick, a man who has had a storied career and played a leading role in public life at the highest levels. Much of it is laid out in his book No Room for Democracy: The Triumph of Ego over Common Sense (RIT Press, 2008). In the words of the publisher, Dick “traces his career as a Cornell Law student, a practicing attorney in Rochester, New York, and then head of his county’s Republican Committee, which segued into a nomination as the youngest New York Supreme Court Judge in history.” Then his life took another turning when he was appointed chairman of the New York Republican Party by Governor Nelson Rockefeller (see the photo). When Rockefeller assumed the Vice-Presidency under Gerald Ford, Dick’s life became even busier as Chief of Staff 1973-77. If you want to read the whole story, and quite a story it is, get the book. There are many useful (and candid) anecdotes in it, and some profound thoughts about the recent trajectory of American political life. With the death of Nelson Rockefeller, Dick turned back to the law and a less hectic family-centered life. Kathy Petrone and Sandy Ricker celebrated their birthdays together, they are only 2 days apart, February 13th and 15th. Their husbands, Bob and Bill treated the girls to a wonderful dinner at Ruth Chris Steak House at the Coconut Point mall. Take a look at the picture of them enjoying dessert, you girls look great and keep getting younger everyyear!HappyBe-latedBirthdaytoyouboth! Sandi and Dave Marshall once again hosted their Old Friends and New Friends party at Picnic Point. It was a great evening for a party and they had friends from all over The Landings and the local area. Of course Sheri and Wendy were there (Dave and Sandi’s daughters), I get to see our neighbor Sheri Christian frequently, and at this party I had the chance to get to know Wendy better. The attached picture shows a group of fiveTrawler ladies plus our golf pro, SuzanneBannan, behind Jon’s table of carved ducks. Pat Daniels was a guest speaker for the Landings Luncheon Series on February 18. She dressed in period costume and discussed Abraham Lincoln’s wife Mary Todd, her life and tragedies. Pat also discussed the way Mrs. Lincoln has been portrayed by historians over the years as a victim and as a much disliked and maligned First Lady. Pat’s hobby is the Civil War and especially the role that women played in Nineteenth Century history.

Windjammer

As we head into April, many friends and neighbors will be headed north. Season

has been a world wind of activities. It’s always so much fun to see everyone when they arrive and bitter sweet to see them go. Perhaps some will be staying longer as the winter continues to be harsh to the north. I think we all are enjoying this beautiful weather here at the Landings. We are so lucky to be here in this piece of paradise Our FebruaryGazebo party celebratedPresident’s Day by enjoying dishes from our home states. As usual, much good food and wonderful fellowship was enjoyed. After seeing all the dishes from various parts of the country and Canada, it made me wonder just who makes up the residents of Windjammer. I’d like to invite you to share where you hale from, andwhatyourareaisknownfor.Whilethiswillbeanunofficialpoll,Ithinkit would be great fun to know who makes up the best Village in the Landings. Aprilstartstheslowexodusofmanyrentersand even some owners back North. This

particular winter has been a very harsh for most, while we have enjoyed the warm, balmy days of SW Florida. Just as this contrast in weather has been noted, I thought it might be nice to contrast a few SBE owners who are long-time residents with residents who are recent owners. They’ll give their reasons for choosing the Landings and particularly SBE. Margaret Droughan (4120) and her husband Jack, former board member, now deceased, bought 23 years ago. “We were renting in Long Boat Key near Sarasotaourfirstyear.Friendswhobought in the Landings invited us to visit, and the moment we drove in and saw the beautiful landscaping and the many amenities, we were hooked. We bought our place soon after. I miss Jack so much, but I still love being down by the pool, usually with my daughter Laura, visiting with old friends in the warmth of Florida,” Margaret said. Jim and Theresa Harris (4100) are recent buyers; Jim is a retired NY CityFirefighterwhowasassignedin Staten Island. “Our introduction to the Landings came through my brother, Bill, who has a place in Clipper Cove. We stayed with him a few times and began a love affair with the Landings. The beautiful landscape, golf course and active lifestyle were attractive. We also like our Wed. Night pool party and the monthly parties at the Helm club pool. Our neighbors in 4100 are very friendly. Even though we had to pretty much redo the condo, we truly love our choice to be here,” states Jim. Mildred and Jack Abbott bought in 4140 over 17 years ago. Mildred stated “We were boaters at the time and loved the beautiful marina. Although we no longer own a boat, the overall ambiance of the Landings is so breathtaking whenwedriveinforthefirsttimeeach fall. We love to golf, and I especially love the pool for water aerobics that I do with either the 9 a.m. group or on my own.” Jack and Mildred were college sweethearts at Auburn University and now reside in Nashville but at one time lived as far north as Buffalo. NY. If you are fortunate to know them, you might say they look and act like the quintessential Southern Belle and Southern Gentleman. New owners, Casey and Diane Homick, took notice of the Fort Myers area 15 years ago when their daughter, Crystal, played in softball tournaments in the area. We were staying in the Tampa area for her game, and we noticed that the weather pattern down here seemed to be warmer even as much as 15 degrees. So when we began searching for a retirement home, Fort Myers was on our radar. With the help of a realtor and some computersavvy,Ifoundour4100condothatfitthebill,”saidCasey.Afterpurchasing in the summer of 2012, they returned to the Toronto Catholic School System and began marking the last 180 days of their careers where DianetaughtscienceandCaseytookthefirstgraduatingclassoftheschoolhe opened to completion. Diane added “We both golf and have enjoyed Bingo at the Helm a few times. Thanks to D’s water aerobics class we have learned a lot about great placestoeatwhilewe’reexercising.Welovethelifestyle.” Mort Goldberg (4100) had a hole in one on #7. “It was a nine iron. Clipper Cove

It is almost shocking to hear people talking about returning home to other residences.

Where does the time go? The Landings helped many of us escape a brutal winter in many of the mid-western, western and northern states. On the bright side many of us at Clipper Cove gave our friends and relatives a respite from the cold when they came to visit. And come tovisittheydid! Katrine Hansen had her daughter Annica visit with grandsons Charlie and Simon from Sweden. David and Betsey Butler had their daughter Beth visit with grand children Corleigh and Zander. The Cristello’s had a visit from their niece and nephew, Jean and Frank DePalma. On the humorous side Helen and Ralph Cristello’s daughter, Eileen and husband Steve came to visit bringing with them their three beloved dogs. Unfortunately, one of their dogs became ill and required numerous trips to the vet and surgery. It was 29 days before Eileen could return home. Ariel

The folks who have endured a cold, snowy winter have sought refuge with friends and

family in Florida. The Ariel pool is a favorite of visitors, as well as, owners who are happy to have the warm sun for morning aerobics and the lounges for soaking in vitamin D. Ariel welcomes its newly elected board members Jim Marshall, Sal Butindaro and Sharon Kapp who was elected as president. They join Earle Lipscomb,Woody Wamsley, Diane Kinser, and Jack Grant to make up the current board. A big thank you goes to outgoing board members Frank Erwin, Carole Hill, and Jack Green for all the time and effort they devoted to the management and preservation of Ariel and its life style. Boards are essential to the health of each village. We are grateful that these womenandmenarewillingtodonatetheirtime, skillsandexperience. When Sandy Frank and Louis Eason went to South Africa in February they visited the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg. They learned about the history and its impact on the people, and the ways South Africa is advancing after confronting their past through truth and reconciliation. While in Zimbabwe visiting Victoria Falls National Park Louis had the opportunity to fishabovethefallsontheZambeziRiverforTigerFish.HesaidthatTigerFishmovelikeatorpedoandfightlikeajet.Theypossesslargeprominentteeth and are known to attack large mammals, including humans. Louis said hewasabletohookandlandfiveofthistoplevelcarnivore. A note from Lyn Reeves arrived from her apartment on the ship The World – her home for almost a year. Lyn was in Lima, Peru and was headed for the Easter Islands, Polynesia and Tonga before spending April in New Zealand where her sister-in-law Dunja Sypher plans to join her. Dunja, who was with Lyn in Madeira, said that she still has vivid memories of the toboggan rides and the drive over the island on curvy narrow road, built on cliffs with barely enough room for the car. Dunja is in residence at Ariel this month and will enjoy life in The Landings.

Thisisquitetheseason!ThebestofFloridaweather presented itself most days and

the snowbirds reveled in it. So did the year-rounders!There were so many “happenings” last month and Steamboat Benders were seen at all of them from the Beer, Brats and Blues to the to the St. Paddy’s day festivities it continues to be one big celebration of this beautifully bountiful blessed life we enjoy here at the Landings. The music festival was a great success and our own Country Music Hall of Famer Charlie McCoy was a highlight. As always, Charlie’s performance has folks talking about his musical talent for long after the show is over. I do believe his fan base is growing by the minute. The piece de resistance of the month was, and still is, the lovely art by Sherrill Colling and Joanne Kupsch. These talented gals created ambience in what was a rather mundane and sort of dismal looking set of poolside restrooms. Their wall art designs are tropical and colorful and they just put a tad more “happy” into our lives. Once again, the capabilities of our SteamboatBend-ers,neverceasetoamaze.

So what if we hit a few trees or drop into the water or go over a wall, right? It all makes for a fun day. Just a side note here, the Sue Smail “change of luck turn” didn’t seem to work for me. There were many visitors coming and going such as Diane Bachtel’s son David with wife Glenda who were happy to spend time with Mom while escaping the winter chill in Montana. Jo Eicken and twin sister Jean had a lovely though short visit here at Steamboat and added more quality time when they met up with their sister

Lucille, vacationing from Syracuse, commented that the Landings is “now her favorite place” and second only to a ski vacation.Friends Mike and Diane escaped the bitter cold and snow in Chicago for eight beautiful days in Southwest Florida. Mike arrived poolside with such fair skin that several concerned villagers inquired if he needed some sunscreen. Following all the comments, Mike said his goal was “To not be thewhitestguyatthepool!” Best wishes to all traveling home. Hopefully you won’t be shoveling your way to the front door. Have a Happy Easter and a beautiful spring season!

Schooner

For the past 19 years, one person has been responsible for arranging ALL of Schooner

Village’s pool parties. That one person, Lois Deets, not only found volunteers for every party, she took care of inventorying supplies, saving and caring for theme decorations from season to season, and always making sure that there was enough money collected in the “kitty” for future parties. A job, I dare say, few would take on for more than one season, much less 19 years! Lois is indeed a veryspecial lady who has given freely of her time not only to Schooner, but to The Landings in many capacities. How fortunate we are to have her as a friend and neighbor.ThankyouLois! Rather than have one person bear responsibility for future parties, our new Board President, Alan Woodford, has asked Board Representative Tom McGuigan to head a pool committee comprised of Sharrie Cheff, Jonnie Ockerlund, and Shirley Rasmussen to arrange those parties next year. Says Shirley,“We are hoping some residents who haven’t hosted a pool party in the past couple of years will step forward and volunteer to do sonextseason.Novemberkicksoff with a Thanksgiving theme. It’s followed by Christmas in December, a “Let it Snow” (but not in Ft. Myers) in January, Valentine’s Day in February, St. Patrick’s in March, and a celebration of everyone’s birthday in April”. Adds Jonnie, “It would be great to have tentative volunteers lined up before many of us leave for the summer. Hosting is easy, and a nice way to give something back to the community. If you live in Schooner, and would like to know more, pleasecallme,Shirley,orSharrieandwewillfillyouinwithallofthe details. Our phone numbers are listed in the Schooner Village Directory.” In addition, Tom’s committee is in the preliminary stages of getting bids for acompletepoolrefinishingthatwillbringituptocode.Underconsiderationis the possibility of using underground heat for water temperature control. Work, if undertaken, will take place in May or later.

Dr. Tom Brown,

who you may know from his participation on the Wellness Committee, volunteers at THE SIX MILE CYPRESS SLOUGH as a guide. The Slough is actually 11 1/2 miles of a moving body of swamp and is run by Lee County. Free guided tours are offered twice a day. We have taken the tour and were impressed by the knowledge and professionalism of tour guides. Tom told me that the reason the Slough is actually called the SixMileCypress Slough is that in the 1800’s when cattle drivers were driving their cattle south to Punta Rasa eventually to be loaded on boats to Cuba they knew that when they arrived atthebigswamptheyweresixmilesawayfromFortMyers.

Beverly Brown volunteers at the Edison/Ford Estates. She is a docent there with a wide variety of responsibilities. She is the guide for the Ford property and gives an informational tour on the history of the estates, the vegetation and the history of the relationship between Ford and Edison. When she is the guide for children and local school tours she will tailor the talk to the group and the tour includes both estates.
