President’s Message
Members
Well another year without water. Looks like it will be more sOll water fishing and less river fishing. I love river fishing more than sOll water. Must be something to do about the sound of flowing water, or reading the river to find fish, or what’s around the next corner, I don’t really know. Although sOll water brings larger fish. No doubt that’s a plus. Last year fishing with ED Huff was a new experience for me on Lake Almanor. Large Browns from the shore was something I always wanted to do. Well I guess lots of fishing since I started fly fishing only 4 years ago have been new adventures but that was special.
Makes me ponder what the future brings. I didn’t realize how progressive this sport is. There is so much to learn and so many different types of gear, fly lines and different species. Our club members have so much knowledge the possibiliOes seem endless.
2015 is going to be a great year for our club. I am so excited to have Mitch our new fish master and Gene taking the chair for fly tying. Mitch will work on a list for fish outs then Gene will set up tying night with some paWerns relaOng to the fish out locaOon. Get involved, let’s get together and do some fishing.
I have been talking about trying to get together every month for casOng pracOce. One idea that we came up with was to meet ader the Saturday breakfast in a park or possibly Quarry Lake. Details to follow. If you have any suggesOons please let me know.
Putah Creek has its “Wild Trout CelebraOon” April 19th at Canyon creek Resort 22074 -‐ CA126 in Winters 10-‐6pm. InstrucOon from Jordon Romney and Mickey Weir. Food and Beer. This is a family oriented fun and educational celebration of the volunteerism of PCT along with many others groups and clubs who assisted DFW's Heritage and Wild Trout Program team over the past 6 years in collecting the data necessary to make designation a reality. I plan on going and have interest from Alan Chun and Steve Culp. If you would like to go let me know ASAP so we can get together for carpooling. We also have to RSVP by the 17th.

Veterans First Fly Fishing ............ Attention Mission Peak Members Veterans First Fly Fishing
Who would like to join us and be part of helping our veterans through this worthwhile program?
What you might ask is involved? It can be as little as a group of us going out to Livermore and and/or Menlo Park once a month to teach fly casting and fly tying to our wounded veterans. It could go as far as accompanying a group of veterans on a fishing trip to be their 'gillie' and personal assistant on that trip.I have made the initial contact at Livermore VA Nursing unit and there seems to be an interest, but I cannot do it alone.
I'd bet we can get funding help from the FFF, NCCFFF, the Elks Lodge, Kiwanis, VFW, and other service organizations, all we need to do is give a little of our own time to those who have given so much for us. If interested please contact me, Thanks Ken Brunskill Email: [email protected], Phone: 510.793.7913

BUDDING FLY FISHING WRITERSHere is your chance to gain some experience writing about your fabulous fly fishing trips to places near and far. The club newsletter is seriously lacking in members written and photographic accounts of our fishouts. Of course you may not think a trip to Putah Creek is worthy of such notoriety, but remember, many members have never been there and would welcome a description of how your fishout went. And, as for a trip to Alaska or Baja, a story of your adventure would be most appreciated. Send articles to the editor.
NOTE FROM TREASURER, STEPHEN CULP – Mission Peak Fly Angler’s patches and pins are available from Stephen at a nominal price. New members should have received either a pin or a patch when they joined; if not, call Stephen Culp.
Trout in the Classroom Program
The MPFA volunteers for the Trout in the Classroom Program just finished up another successful year helping the local city kids become a little more aware of our environment. We do that by helping teachers hatch and raise trout in their classroom and visiting the classes each week to talk to the students.
This year over 1,252 kids participated in our local program. We visited 16 schools and 20 classrooms from preschool thru high school. At the end of the 5 week program we released 507 trout.
This years volunteers were: Ken Brunskill, Wayne Culp, Ed Huff, Don Jower, Dean Lewis, Herb Manchester and Ron Smith along with my wife Judy and a new volunteer (and retired teacher) Pat Lothian. The program only lasts 5 weeks and is very rewarding. For those of you who think you can spare a little time, think about volunteering next year. Just contact any of us for more information.

Lee Haskin began his fishing career in the late fifties, at about 10 years old. Learning how to tie his own flies followed shortly, where he, broadminded and versatile, at an early age, cast his creations to carp on his home waters, the Pajaro River, and as a teenager, fished side-by-side with his fly-fishing father, on trout waters throughout California. However, in 1967 Lee caught his first striped bass at the mouth of the Pajaro River, just prior to moving to Long Beach to attend college. After settling in to college, Lee discovered the many species of fish that would readily come to the fly. His primary target was the Bonita, found in the San Gabriel River, near the college.
In the early 1970's Lee began to fish San Luis Reservoir and O'Neill Forebay, with a primary interest in catching stripers with top water bugs. About that same time Lee and old friend and fishing buddy, Del Brown, (talk about good company!) began fishing the South San Francisco Bay for Stripers. Del and Lee fished from Coyote Point to Candlestick Park throughout the 1970's and 80’s. Then the Bay's incredible striper fishing dropped off, and Del began his world record run for permit. Lee concentrated his efforts once again on the San Luis Reservoir and O'Neill Forebay, targeting the flats and islands along Highway 156 on the O'Niell Forebay, and also, depending on the season, along the dam and many accessible coves, fishing from a float tube. Lee has fished these areas successfully since the early 80's, and has conducted on-water clinics for folks all over California.
Lee enjoys telling the story of a great striped bass that he hooked in the O’Niell Forebay, and having no way to secure the monster, finally lost the fish after three attempts to grab the giant fish. The fish pictured here is a 40-lb. striper that was hooked while fishing from his float tube, in the main lake, in the late 90's. It wasn’t until November of 2014, that Lee caught another big striper at San Luis. This fish weighed in a 38 lbs.!
Saltwater flats fishing became a focus for Lee, back in 1995, and Lee’s goal was to develop fly patterns for every fly fishing location he fished, with a special interest in tarpon, and permit, from the Yucatan to Honduras. Over 20 original patterns are currently being produced overseas, and Lee continues to tie custom flies for folks all over the world!

Also check the newsletter for detailed information on fishing tackle, flies, directions and accommodations, as recommended by the fishmaster.
Note that only the fishouts shown in BOLD on this calendar are actually confirmed at this time; all others are tentative.
The actual dates of wintertime fishouts are highly dependent upon the weather conditions and will be confirmed by the fishmaster the week of the fishout.
Your ideas for fishout locations are always welcomed by the club. Phone Dean Lewis to volunteer as a fishmaster. The qualifications for a fishmaster are that you have a place in mind, know how to get there, and would welcome some fwishing companions. That is it, so sign up now!

QUESTION OF THE MONTHI have a few fly lines that I don’t remember what they are.
Is there a way to figure out what they are?
Weight forward, double taper for instance and what weight it is?
Intermediate, class II, etc…. Is there a way you can tell by the sink rate? Can you just drop the whole thing in a bucket and count how fast it sinks?
How can you tell if it’s sOll good?

Question and Answer
In the March Newsletter, Dean posed the following QUESTION:How do you organize your flies is my question? Do you put all the dry flies in boxes, sorted by type? Do you put all the nymphs and midges in other boxes sorted by type? Do you sort by application, ie, Steelhead flies, salmon flies, bass flies, etc? How do you ensure that when on the water and the fish stop taking a nymph and start taking a dry that you will have both types with you? Do you have multiple boxes that contain mixed types of flies? Do you have duplicate boxes of the same mix?In short, how do you organize your flies? Thanks,Dean
Craig Gittings responded as follows:
In his appreciation, Dean Lewis generously presented board members with thin one sided boxes that work great for smaller nymphs up to size 14. I also received one that had magnetic compartments. This one works particularly well on windy days, unless I drop the fly box while standing in the river. I can put a couple of these boxes in the same shirt pocket. These have become my go to fly boxes. Thanks, Dean. Prior to these little gems I relegated my dries and emergers that I use in a double sided box waterproof box with a little depth to them. The reverse side held my day’s worth of nymphs. These three boxes are more than enough for a day on the water. I use bigger waterproof boxes for larger patterns and streamers if it warrants. Less is more the longer I fish for trout. The larger double sided waterproof boxes work great for steelhead and silver salmon flies as well as bass patterns. For saltwater patterns, if I am fishing from a boat or even flats fishing, they go into a larger compartmental boxes and holds a weeks worth of shrimp, crab patterns and an assortment baitfish patterns and stay in the boat. Walking flats or beaches I only carry what will fit in a baggie- usually less than a dozen flies..
As far as organizing individual flies, size, shape, and color is the general rule for me. Keep it simple. Please don’t ask how I organize my tippet.
Craig
