Hello Neighbours,Welcome Silhillians to spring! England is now at her finest with glorious blossoms, colour and sweet fragrance. A time to feel how blessed we are to live here. The delightful Felicity Kendal shares her early memories of growing up in Solihull. It was a joy to spend time with her in Chelsea on a rare glorious spring day.No-one need be alone or at a loss for things to do with the extraordinary range of activities and clubs to share your interests and knowledge with or just to find company for lunch or dinner. We highlight a couple of these and give contact details on our extensive Clubs & Societies page.If you are organising an event and need to let Solihull know (and the global community too as we are online) - tell us and we’ll feature it.Copies of the magazine are always at The Manor House, High Street and on the info desk at Touchwood.

Felicity Kendal - Memories Of A Good Life in St Bernard's RdThe woman you see on TV and stage is just how Felicity is in person - radiating light and petite femininity.

When I asked Felicity about her connection to Olton her first words were to say it was very much a separate town to Solihull, when she lived there.

She was born in her family home - Elmhurst, 21 St. Bernard’s Rd. The large Victorian house was filled with family. Felicity recalls her grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings and cousins all happily together at Elmhurst and says “it was almost like commune living. Everyone looked after each other.”

Her mother was an actress and usually on tour - and her father spent a great deal of time away as he ran a theatre company playing mostly Shakespeare. He eventually moved the family to India but returned to the UK in the 1950s. Always back to Elmhurst, their much loved home in Olton. Felicity first worked on stage at the age of 9. “I never needed to bother with exams, ‘O’ Levels and stuff. I knew what I’d be doing.”

“Elmhurst was a lovely house with a big garden,” she says. She can still recall the smell and every bit of furniture there and walking to Olton Station.

At 17 years old Felicity returned for a couple of years, (always penniless she says) using it as her base, travelling to Paddington to work.

It was the Duchess of Cornwall who asked Felicity to become a Patron of the Royal Voluntary Service and having grown up partly in India where elders lived amongst their kin and the values of togetherness were important, she felt strongly about becoming involved and has worked herself as a volunteer when time allowed. As she puts it: “The young need to be taught that sharing is an important part of life and the value of giving back to society should be incorporated as a fundamental part of education.”

Due to begin rehearsing soon for Noël Coward’s Hayfever opening at The Duke of York’s Theatre in London from 29 April to 1 August, she’s looking forward to going back to her comfort zone - being on stage again.

60-year-old Surinder looks after a busy home with children and grandchildren. Her children work, then come home late to cooked meals. She looks after the kids during school holidays.

A recent serious shoulder operation meant reduced mobility for several months. She missed her sense of independence and value, and her family had to keep taking time off work.

They contacted Clarriots Care and Suzie helped Surinder on a daily basis until she recovered. She assisted with difficult tasks to do with household chores and cooking, with Surinder overseeing her.

Surinder said; "My right arm was out of use for months. You take it for granted how much you get done. But Suzie was so much help, even down to helping with the children in the holidays. I really trust Clarriots."

Humans of SolihullMan’s best friend, and colleague? Fire investigation dog handler Mathew Dixon tells us his story...

Although I’m a Yorkshireman I am now based at Solihull Fire Station and as such can be considered a ‘Solihull Human.’ I’ll try and keep the ey’ups, appens,’ and thou knowst, to a minimum and no, I am not walking Whippets.

Following University I became an RSPCA Inspector, and after 6 years of being regularly bitten, scratched and sharing fleas with all sorts of creatures - not all human - I became the Fire Investigation Dog Handler for West Midlands Fire Service, a role I dearly love.

I live and work with three best friends who are ever willing, devoted, enthusiastic and great company, Ellie, Peppa and Kai….my team of dogs.

At 13 Ellie is now enjoying her retirement while Peppa who is 6 and Kai who is 2 continue her work.

We hunt arsonists by searching fire scenes for traces of flammable liquid left behind after the fire has extinguished. Such evidence, once gathered, can be invaluable

in securing convictions, as happened in the case of Mohammed Inayat; sentenced to 22 years in prison for the murder of his wife in an arson attack on their family home in Cateswell Rd, Sparkhill. A case where the dogs’ evidence was vital in painting a picture of what actually happened that night.

Fire scenes are not the usual domain of dogs, so harnesses with flashing lights, search lines and dog boots are the order of the day, to ensure my dogs are safe when working.

From house fires to factory fires, we search them all, and if arson is to blame the dogs will sniff it out.

Mathew Dixon

Look out for the next open day at Solihull Fire station when you can come and meet my canine team and in the meantime follow our capers on Twitter at @WMFireDogs

Education in a Supportive and Caring EnvironmentEdgbaston High School’s Preparatory School is a vibrant community of pupils and staff. We educate girls from the age of 2 ½ to 11, and it is here that many girls’ interest in learning, art, sport, music and drama is awakened and encouraged in an atmosphere of care and commitment.

In Westbourne, girls may join at any stage following a pre-admission visit in which we assess if a girl is physically, emotionally and socially ready. Girls may begin their school life in Nursery aged 2 ½, Kindergarten at 3+ or Reception at 4+ and we have a superb purpose built Nursery with specialist play areas, ICT facilities and a dedicated reading room.

The Preparatory School houses Years 1 - 6 and has a warm and welcoming ethos. Girls can join at any stage in the school year subject to an entrance test and newcomers find it easy to settle and become part of our family.

We are proud of our academic successes and have a proven track record in guiding girls into the senior school of their choice. We also have a strong musical and sporting tradition and girls are encouraged to follow their interests irrespective of their ability level; participation and enjoyment are the objectives! We encourage all girls to become independent thinkers, self-sufficient and considerate to each other and the wider community.

Parents are warmly encouraged to visit the Preparatory School talk to our pupils - they are our best ambassadors!

A Happy Easter to our readers ... Here are some egg-straordinary facts about eggs!

Brown versus white shells

Shell colour doesn’t indicate the quality or nutritional value of an egg, but rather the breed that laid it. Hens with white feathers tend to lay white eggs whilst hens with red feathers lay brown eggs.

What yolk colour means

The colour of an egg yolk is determined by diet and has nothing to do with an egg’s nutritional value. If you discover a dark yellow yolk, the hen was probably fed green vegetables. A medium-yellow yolk would indicate a diet of corn and alfalfa while a light yellow yolk could be the result of eating wheat and barley.

Translating the label

Cage-free — These hens are not battery raised but this doesn’t mean they are frolicking in an open field. More often, they are free to roam a barn, but living conditions can vary widely.

Natural — Anyone can use the term “natural” to describe their eggs, so this tells us nothing.

Free-range — Hens can roam outdoors at some point, but without specification regulating how long for - there is no way of knowing.

Certified Organic — Hens have some access to the outdoors and are fed an organic vegetarian diet that excludes any pesticides, animal by-products, or genetically modified foods.

Forget about cholesterol

An egg contains 2/3 of recommended cholesterol intake, but it turns out this isn’t a big deal. Studies show that regular egg consumption does not increase risk of heart disease.

Lots of nutritional bang for little buck

An egg contains a high dose of protein (helping build muscle) and healthy fats (helping to feel full and satisfied) at little caloric cost (100 cal per egg). And there’s loads of easy, quick and tasty ways of eating them.

Comfort food = eggs on toast.

What an egg!

Harriet the hen laid the world’s largest egg in 2010, measuring a hefty 9.1 inches in diameter.

Looking after your lawnIt’s spring at last! The nights are getting longer and you want your lawn looking its best for all those garden parties and barbecues. So here are a few handy words of advice from local lawn-care specialist Phil Harrison.

If you'd like to know more

Please call Phil Harrison, Lawnscience Solihull, on 07917 004 450.

Unfortunately, as the grass wakes up after its winter snooze, so do the weeds. Dandelions, buttercups and daisies can take over as summer approaches, so start your lawn care regime by tackling them with an appropriate weed killer.

Once the weeds have been sent packing, it’s time to fertilise your grass, building its strength and getting it lush and green for the summer. But be careful - using the wrong products, or using them incorrectly, could leave your grass weak and patchy.

Professional lawn care experts have access to top products used by football clubs and golf courses that aren’t available in the shops. Plus our expertise comes with a satisfaction guarantee. If you’re serious about your lawn, then save yourself time and money by giving us a call.

Earn money from the idle tools in your shedYou can get your tools working to earn their cost back by loaning them out through this great new company….The Borroclub.

You may have heard about a growing sector called “The sharing economy”? It is a concept where you have something you own and you don’t mind somebody else using it. Some companies have capitalised on this new economy such as Airbnb (lending your home) and Zipcar (lending your car).

Matt Dredger recently entered the sharing economy setting up a business which helps owners monetise the items lying idle in their home, by lending to people for a small fee. Register on the Borroclub website, list your item and that’s all you need to do as the site is very easy to navigate. To ensure a safe return, a deposit is left by the borrower and feedback is left by the lender.

Matt says: “I constantly buy items to perform a specific task, for example, putting up shelves. I will head to the nearest hardware store and buy a drill for £20-£50, then a spirit level and so on. But once the task is done, all of the paraphernalia will sit in my garage taking space.

“I have outlaid hundreds of pounds that for 95% of the year does nothing and I know that you will have probably done the same. It can be power tools, garden equipment, steam cleaners, roof boxes or alternatively handbags, evening clothes, camping equipment and bicycles. They could all be earning you back your initial outlay as well as their keep.”

Borrocub benefits:

• Help the environment

• Connect with your community

• Try before you buy

• Earn some money

• Save some money

One of the things we’re all taught from an early age is to brush our teeth twice daily, especially before bedtime, but less than 50% of the population floss every day which can lead to plague build-up, tooth decay and gum disease. Some top tips for keeping everything in tiptop condition

• To brush thoroughly takes about 2 minutes

• Keeping our toothbrush/tooth head for too long – replace every 3 months. A worn toothbrush is a useless toothbrush

• Failing to rinse the toothbrush thoroughly after use means you’re putting the bugs and bacteria back into your mouth – yuk!

The Dental TouchDr Manoj Parmar, a local family dentist, offers some friendly advice on ensuring your teeth last a lifetime

• Brushing teeth straight after a meal – brush as soon as you get up, have breakfast, then just rinse

• Failing to floss, or use interdental brushes – bacteria and food love to hide between teeth.

Make regular visits to the dentist and dental hygienist and your teeth will last a lifetime.

We are blessed to have one of the best brass bands in the UK right here in Solihull, formed 96 years ago and regularly performing across the region.

In 2013 the 28 strong ensemble recorded its first ever CD - La Rejouissance.

W H Hodesdon Senior formed the band a year after the end of the Great War. Up to last year, his grandson, 86 year old Don Hodesdon attended most of the band’s twice weekly rehearsals, providing refreshments and occasionally joining in playing the cornet, as he was a former principal.

Dave Bishop-Rowe the Musical Director says; “The band plays pop to contemporary as well as film and traditional music. When deciding out of our repertoire what to perform, we always try to take great care in selecting a programme which suits every occasion.”

Baritone player and translator 30 year old Cat Jarman added; “Playing in the band is fun. There is always great camaraderie, laughs and a connected spirit. We’re immensely proud to represent Shirley and Solihull and be able to perform at a wide range of community events throughout the year.”

Members come from a range of professions, including accountancy and teaching, even having a doctor in the ranks. And although there are a number of newer musicians, there are some, like tuba players; Sally Middleton, Richard Hart, Ian Birchall and Lawrence Tew, who have played together for more than 30 years.

“The main message I have for people considering or going through a divorce using an internet template, is to get proper legal advice so you know exactly where you stand. It won’t cost as much as you think, and you will not be obligated to go through the entire process with a solicitor.

“We take a conciliatory approach when advising our clients - talking and negotiating is better than an confrontational approach, because in many cases there are children involved and the divorcing couple are going to be joint parents for the rest of their lives.”

The Wilkes Partnership LLPStanton House, 54 Stratford RoadShirley, Solihull, B90 3LS0121 733 8000 | www.wilkes.co.uk

'Til death do us part

These words no longer hold as much sway as they once did with more couples than ever getting divorced. Hopefully a few words of advice from our local divorce lawyer Clare Fletcher of The Wilkes Partnership will benefit a lot of our readers.

With many people worried that involving solicitors means vast expense, ‘DIY’ divorces following internet based instruction packs are on the up.

This is fine, says Clare, but there are a couple of pitfalls that can be avoided with proper legal advice.

“In the typical case, a husband seeking a divorce needs to be aware that the financial rights of his wife remain in place after the decree absolute. Until a Financial Court Order has been put in place his ex-wife can put in a claim for part of his pension money or any other relevant assets,” she says.

“And on the other side of the table, a wife seeking to finalise a divorce needs to be aware that if her ex-husband dies after decree absolute but before they have their Financial Court Order in place then she will lose all rights to the pension after his death. These examples work both ways for men and women.

Vintage SolihullThe building is the George & Dragon Inn, dating from the 15th century, which stood on the corner of High Street and Mill Lane.

It was later named the Magpie (with a birdcage outside apparently containing a magpie), and then became a private house, which in turn became a beer shop known as the Green Dragon.

In the 19th century, the jettied overhang was filled in, and the ground floor became shops. In 1903, Joseph Davis built a bakehouse on the site. Davis’s sold the shop at the front of the premises in 1952 but kept the bakery at the rear.

By the time the building was demolished in the 1960s as part of the Central Area Development that created Mell Square, the old George & Dragon premises were occupied by Halfords and Joseph Harris (cleaners and dyers).

Do you have any lovely old photographs of Solihull with a bit of a story behind them that you would like to share with other readers?

If so please get in touch!

Did you know you don't need superpowers to be someone's hero?

When you consider the prospect of donating bone marrow it’s understandable that you might initially picture a complicated, distressing and invasive procedure.

Most people are entirely unaware of the fact this isn’t the case. To register yourself and find out if you’re a match all it takes is a simple saliva test, and if you’re a match for a lucky someone, you just need to donate some blood, and with this simple act potentially save a life.

Ulrika Dandekar - also known as Riya - reminded us of the power we have. Officially recognised for her inspirational volunteering and campaigning to help save others whilst fighting her own battle against terminal cancer, Birmingham NatWest Venus fittingly chose Riya as ‘Influential Women of the Year.’ Her message - that she spent the last weeks of her life fighting to deliver - is how easy and painless it is to save a life, and how your involvement could mean the world to so many people.

Hip hip hoorayFor Knowle & Dorridge's Ladies' Circle's 50th birthday

Knowle & Dorridge Ladies Circle is just one of these which has stood the test of time. It has just celebrated its anniversary at an event where over 100 members enjoyed lunch and a talk by Rachel Agnew who some may have seen on the ITV daytime show Loose Women. Rachel spoke movingly about transforming her life when, as a single parent she lost her job.

A silent auction raised £2,000 for its chosen charity for 2014 - Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

The K&D Ladies Circle is an informal, not-for-profit social community organisation for those around the ages of 18 to 45 meeting twice monthly at various locations with a raft of different activities from indoor climbing, self defence and crafts. It does sound wonderful fun.

One of the best things about our borough is the extraordinary range of opportunities available. Anyone can be an effective part of the community with the fun plethora of clubs and societies doing meaningful things.

Bats, frogs and creepy crawlies

Parents….did you look down at your peacefully sleeping child and wonder what they will grow up to be? Did you hope that somehow all your love, time and energy would produce a person who will make the world a better place?

Kate Sharma is a lovely, shy, articulate, intelligent and gifted young woman raised in Dorridge and educated at Arden School. Over the next few issues Kate’s fascinating writing will be featured in episodes.

Part One

Most people don’t know what they want to be when they grow up. A lot of adults are still wondering it seems to me. As a child when I was asked this question I’d reply, ‘I’m going to save the world. Not all of it of course.’ I didn’t have aspirations to be a world leader or celebrity. There was a brief deviation aged seven when apparently I was going to be a nurse as well as an Olympic swimmer.

As a five year old I displayed a fascination in bones and less savoury things. Raising me wasn’t going to be an easy ride for my parents. I fortunately have

a tolerant family who have patiently allowed me to follow what some might consider an unusual career path.

These early traits resulted in a passion for everything natural becoming my career and essentially, my life. I have worked in conservation in three main capacities; as a keeper in Jersey at the legendary Gerald Durrell’s Wildlife Conservation Trust; as an Ecological Consultant and in Research and Volunteering. All very different but with the same objective - the protection of endangered species and their habitats.

Never tell a child their dreams can’t be real. They might not turn out how you thought, but if you open doors and support their explorations, eventually the possibility becomes the actuality.

Kate’s story is continued in the next issue of the magazine when you can read about the creatures she’s worked with and her fascinating career.

Ecologist Kate Sharma shares her fascinating story

Aspire To Dance and Have Fun Exercising!Anushka Parmar knew by the time she was six that she was going to be a dancer. As a youngster she learned a form of classical Indian dance called Bharatnatyam. Some years of dance school and an exciting career later Aspire Dance was born.

Aspire provides classes in a range of exciting styles; Bollywood, Street and Contemporary, held at locations all over Solihull - without limit to age, gender or ability. Anushka says; “it’s never too late or early to begin to dance. Great music makes your toes tap so your body naturally wants to move with the rhythm and it’s this natural instinct we work with.”

What fun! Dancing and getting fit at the same time. How about asking Anushka to organise and set up a Jai Ho! dance class at your Hen Party and choreograph a first dance for a bridal couple.

Planning a wedding? The best ever excuse for a fabulous dress! Here are some wise words from the bridal consultants at Maureen Myring Kesterton Bridal Couture to prepare you when buying your dream dress.

Before you start looking …

Book appointments early as dresses can take up to six to eight months to order so leave plenty of time to look around.

As much as you want to keep everyone happy, don’t bring an entourage with you. It will only confuse you with too many different opinions. Keep it to no more than two people you trust to be honest.

Appointments can last up to three hours, so don’t make too many in one day. This is not something to be rushed.

When looking for your gown

Be open minded - we find a lot of brides have strong ideas about their dream dress but then try the style on and don’t fall in love with the way it looks. So consider all different styles even the wild cards as you may be taken by surprise.

Be aware of ordering online as you may not receive quite what you thought from pictures. We have had many upset brides and bridesmaids come in frantically looking for something at the last minute because they were disappointed with their online purchase.

If you have a budget - stick to it! Don’t try on gowns way over your price - it only leads to disappointment. Only choose a dress because you love it not because of the price tag or designer label.

When you have picked your dream dress - stop looking - trust your choice.

Don’t let others influence your final decision - it’s you who needs to love your dress.

Finally most important - enjoy the experience - it should be fun, exciting and most of all - be just perfectly everything you always wanted.

Do you enjoy a walk but not on your own? Here is an opportunity to make friends and stroll for pleasure and health.

Every two weeks on a Thursday morning a friendly group of folk of all ages and fitness levels meet at the St. George & St.Theresa Church in Dorridge at 10.15am.

They set off for a stroll, often to Dorridge Park or Conker Walk, and return back to start point at 11.30am, depending on the weather. And once back at the church, free tea, coffee and biscuits are provided.

People who wouldn’t normally get out on their own have the opportunity to take the air

and enjoy good company as there is a strong emphasis on social contact. The group may split as some prefer a faster longer walk.

Lunar Festival 2015Lunar Festival returns for its second year this summer, set in a beautiful region of verdant countryside just outside Solihull in Tanworth in Arden from the 5th to the 7th of June.

Indicative of how Lunar likes to do things a little bit differently, they welcome headliners Tinariwen this summer. The Grammy Award-winning group of Tuareg nomads and musicians hail from the Sahara Desert region of northern Mali. Then there’s Wilko Johnson, a guitarist with the iconic Dr. Feelgood. They are joined by the quite brilliant Public Service Broadcasting who take samples from old public information films, archive footage and propaganda material, creating thought-provoking shows which are wholly unique.

As well as the plethora of other artists performing there is a whole host of other activities designed to keep everyone entertained

from the families with little ones in tow through to the adults looking for some late night clubs.

In the daytime you will be able to try your hand at everything from bush crafts to African Drumming, Guerilla Archaeology to Headdress Making, Yoga to Northern Soul Dance classes plus many more. For the families in attendance there will be the Pink Meadow, which will host the children’s weekend club to keep the little ones entertained.

it’s 75th Anniversary. It’s a wonderful organisation created to help, encourage and organise assistance for those requiring it with The Duchess of Cornwall as President.

Besides desperate for people to volunteer they need fundraising and donations, so remember them if you’re putting an event on as a charity for your raffle ticket donation.

Volunteer to:

• Give something back

• Make new friends

• Help older people

• Enjoy a whole new experience and give yourself a ‘feel good’ feeling knowing you’ve done something valuable for someone.

Royal Voluntary Services -Making everyone matter

How many people feel restless or down in the dumps but don’t know what to do about it….?

A wonderful way of getting back that ‘feel good’ feeling is doing something for someone else.

Time - to someone who has little to spare - is the most valuable gift of all as it can not be regained once used, but also something that often goes unappreciated.

Except when you give up time to someone in need. A person whose quality of life is acutely compromised. It might be from the loss of a loved one creating depression and loneliness or a disability that means they need assistance just doing simple things most can do without a thought.

When a young person gives their Time - an hour or two - to read, chat and listen with someone else in a less well off situation, they grow in spirit and understanding as well as benefiting positively from the company of someone wiser with life experience.

We should all look at our elderly and think “there I will be, one day”. By helping others now it’s my feeling that it’s an insurance policy for our own futures. Give and you shall receive is a common wisdom. None of us know when and if we too will be in the same situation as we grow older.

Older people’s charity, The Royal Voluntary Service - launched in 1938 has just celebrated

SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN - Certificate 12

The My Solihull film reviewRECOMMENDED VIEWING

Released in 2011, we unhesitatingly recommend this British made romantic come-dy for entertainment value as well as being one the whole family (with older chil-dren) can enjoy. Don’t be put off by the title - this is far more about people than fish although the challenge of bringing salmon to the desert is the basis of the plot.

Based on the 2007 novel of the same name by Paul Torday and with Halle Hall-stom as the director (Cider House Rules, Chocolat and more recently critically ac-claimed The One-Hundred-Foot Journey) the film stars Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt and Kristin-Scot Thomas.

Fisheries expert Alfred Jones (Ewan McGregor) receives an email from financial adviser Harriet Chetwode-Talbot (Emily Blunt), seeking advice on a project to bring salmon fishing to the Yemen—a

project being bankrolled by a wealthy Yemeni sheikh which Alfred rejects as unfeasible…but then the Prime Minister’s office be-come involved….

The Rugby World Cup 2015 comes back to the West MidlandsSome words from Andy Johnson, former player for The Rugby Football Club, Coventry and Moseley. Coach and Educator Presenter for the RFU, delivering The Leadership Academy and graduating Elite Coach Course at All Blacks Academy IRANZ June 2014

Only five months to go until the 2015 Rugby World Cup arrives in Birmingham.

The tournament will be hosted by England from 18th September - 31st October with the Final at Twickenham Stadium, London.

We are fortunate in being able to host two great matches at Villa Park;

South Africa -v- Samoa Saturday 26th September kicking off at 16:45

Australia -v- Uruguay Sunday 27th September kicking off at Noon

There will be opportunity to see players at their training bases. South Africa at the University of Birmingham with Samoa and Romania training at Sutton Coldfield RFC. Warwick School are hosts to Japan.

The choice of The Villa Stadium is a coup. Worldwide sports fans will be flocking into Birmingham.

A sell out crowd of just under 43,000 will fill the Villa ground with few knowing

anything about its amazing rugby link.

On a cold misty winter’s evening in 1874, four keen cricketers played a game resembling what is now football, lit by gaslight in a meadow off Heathfield Rd, Birchfield. Members of a local Wesleyan Chapel team, they played the new game of the day, Association Football and formed a club of their own.

A year later in 1885 the first match was organised against Aston Brook St.Mary’s, a rugby team. A compromise was agreed with half of each code being played. When they met to play the next week, Aston Villa had arrived.

Today, outside the Villa Suite at the AV ground is a memorial gaslight with an inscribed plaque commemorating the Rugby Union game’s contribution to the origins of Aston Villa.

With loads to see and do at the Rugby World Cup Fan Park and other attractions, I will be writing again with all the news.

Andy Johnson
