Amy Franklin, Significant Support Needs Teacher, Mountain View Elementary Written by Amy Franklin, Significant Support Needs Teacher at Mountain View Elementary Mountain View Elementary School is a primary school in Douglas County School District located in Parker, Colo., and one of the 85 schools that participated in the annual Spread the Word to End the Word campaign in March. This year Mountain View Elementary held it's second annual "Respect (Spread the Word to End the Word) Campaign" in conjunction with the national RWord Campaign. The campaign was entirely student driven and student lead. Students created a play of Dr Suess' The Sneetches, created an inclusive video of A Rainbow of Friends by PK Hallinan and Project Unify Student Leaders hosted the assembly. Mountain View had a school wide assembly, held a banner signing and pledge day, and is spending the next two months honoring students who put their learning into practice by recognizing them with a Respect Awards. A Flame of Hope will be lit in Athens, Greece and travel to theUnited States this summer. Three torches will travel fromWashington, D.C. across our nation all the way to Los Angeles,California to kick off the Special Olympics World Games in July.The torch will be in Colorado June 24 through July 1. TheFlame of Hope represents our passion that times change ­ thatthose with intellectual disabilities deserve equality, respect andopportunity ­ not tomorrow but today! YOU can participate as a walker, jogger, runner, rollerblader orcyclist while carrying the Flame of Hope. The cycle routes are 5miles long and the other routes are 1/2 miles and you canreserve your spot for just $10, then raise or donate a minimumof $67 to secure your spot and be part of something that will bea memory of a lifetime. You can register as team of 15 for$1,000, $1,500 or $2,500.

Opening Ceremonies will kick off the 2015Summer Games Friday, June 5 with competitionrunning through the weekend. The celebration,featuring a parade of athletes, LETR Torch Run,lighting of the cauldron and great entertainmentwill be held at Stocker Stadium Friday evening.

The SOCO Summer Games ­ hosted byColorado Mesa University in Grand Junction,Colo., features Aquatics, Gymnastics,Powerlifiting, Soccer, and Track & Field.Additionally, the Games will feature a YoungAthletes Skill Competition. For families withYoung Athletes interested in participating, pleasecontact Mandi DeWitt.

Special Olympics Project UNIFY® is built upon thepremise that in order to have the greatest impact thechange needs to start with young people. ProjectUNIFY brings youth with and without intellectualdisabilities together through education and sports andrelated initiatives that provide them with theknowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to create

and sustain school communities that promote inclusion. Project UNIFY is already in 145schools in Colorado and many of those schools support Spread the Word to End the Wordefforts through running pledge stations or holding student rallies to promote inclusion.  Fort Collins high schools ­ Fossil Ridge, Fort Collins, Poudre and Rocky Mountain ­celebrated inclusion through Unified Basketball. Read about Fort Collins Unified Basketball.

SOCO's Madness in March Expands

More than 90 teams from around the state competed lastweekend at our annual SOCO State BasketballChampionship at Gold Crown Field House in Lakewood.The school­based team division increased significantly thisyear with an all­time high 22 high school unified teamsqualifying for the tournament. With the expansion of theunified division and a young athletes skills event onSunday, the tournament expanded to three days for thefirst time in SOCO history.State Basketball Photo Gallery Results

The month of March is always a busy month for ourathletes, and this March was no different. Our athleteshad the unique opportunity to rub elbows withprofessional athletes, creating life­long memories.

On March 1, seven Special Olympics Colorado YoungAthletes walked the runway with Colorado Avalancheplayers and coaches at the 2015 Charity Brunch andFashion Show hosted by the Avs Better Halves. Highlights | Behind the Scenes | Complete Fashion Show | Photos March 26 featured the 13th Annual  (28th overall) Denver Nuggets Clinic for SpecialOlympics Colorado. Over 150 athletes attended the clinic and enjoyed taking a few tipsfrom the pros while working on their basketball skills.Highlights | Photos

Pulling for a Purpose ­ The Third Annual Plane Pull is August 1

The Special Olympics Colorado Plane Pull is a giant tug­of­warbetween you, your friends and a 164,000 pound airplane. Teamsof up to 25 people will compete to pull a jumbo jet 12 feet acrossthe tarmac in the least amount of time. To participate, teamsmust raise a minimum of $1,250 ­ that's just $50 per person.Highlights of this Special Olympics Colorado benefit includeexciting exhibits, vendors, food, and entertainment for all!

SOCO Unified Sports Shines at CHSAA 4A/5A State Basketball

Brighton HS and Silver Creek HS represented SOCOand Unified sports at the third­annual CHSAAShowcase Unified Basketball Game in conjunction withthe CHSAA 4A and 5A boys and girls state basketballchampionships. The game was a hard­fought battle, andboth teams showed great athleticism and sportsmanshipin front of hundreds of high school basketball fans at theCoors Events Center in Boulder.The Demonstrationgame at the state's
