Maumee Valley Presbytery Meeting Tuesday February 10, 2015
On Tuesday February 10th Alison Falls, Jim Wagnitz,
Pastor Mark Cooper and I attended the Maumee Valley
Meeting held at First Presbyterian Church Maumee,
Ohio. This is one of the four quarterly meetings where
the churches of the Maumee Valley Presbytery come
together to conduct the business of the Presbytery.
Typical items on the agenda are: Presentation of
Overtures, Installation of Presbytery Officers, actions
taken to the Presbytery from Council, recognition of a
new congregation, changes to the manual of operations,
and actions taken by the Council on Ministries (COM).
The actions taken by COM included approving many
pastoral changes, related service contracts and issues at
a particular church.
Two items of interest to us were the approval of
Reverend Mark Cooper as a teaching elder for our
church and the authorizing of Karen Coffin, Alison Falls,
Joyce Jagucki and Bill Sharp to be a Communion
Celebrant at our church in the absence of a Presbytery
approved pastor.
We arrived by 8:45AM. since Pastor Mark had a meeting
with the COM at 9:00 AM. relative to his being approved
as a teaching elder for our church. We went early in his
support and with a minor addition request from COM
Marks contract was approved for our church. This is the
contract that the pastoral search committee
recommended to Session and which was unanimously
approved at their meeting of Tuesday February 3rd.
Presbytery took action on 8 overtures (motions) that
shall amend the denominations constitution (Book of
Order) and Session wants to make our congregation
aware of what these amendments mean. Our concern is
that we listened to your concerns for Session not
keeping you informed last time when important actions
like this took place. All Presbyteries will be voting on
these proposed amendments to the denominations
constitution to determine if these changes will be
amended and entered into the Constitution.
These are being shared with you as a matter of
information of action presented by the Council of
Presbytery for a vote at the February 10th Presbytery
meeting. The following overtures are from the 221st GA
(General Assembly) for a vote by all Presbyteries I will
try to give you a short explanation of each. If you desire
a more in depth explanation please contact one of us
who were in attendance. We have a copy of the
Proposed Amendments to the Constitution as approved
by the 221st General Assembly 2014 as recommended to
the presbyteries for their vote for your further reading
and knowledge.
(1.) 14-1 Confession of Belhar: This amendment
proposes that the Confession of Belhar shall be included
in the Book of Confession. The Confession of Belhar is
an additional confession to those already in existence.
Its purpose is to give recognition to our ecumenical
partners in South Africa and the Deep South. This
passed 80/10/1 by written ballot.
14-A Renunciation of Jurisdiction on Amending G-
2.0509: This amendment seeks to prevent a teaching
elder (Pastor) who is in the midst of a formal judicial
process from renouncing jurisdiction and then
continuing to work or volunteer in the church. Passed
highly with a voice vote.
14-B.1 Final Assessment On Amending G-2.0607: This
amendment proposes that a candidate may not enter
into negotiations for his or her service as a teaching
elder without approval of the presbytery of care. Passed
highly by a voice vote.
14-B.2 Accommodations On Amending G-2.0610: This
amendment proposes that if a presbytery concludes
there are good and sufficient reasons for
accommodations of an individual seeking ordination, it
may by a three-forth vote, waive any of the
requirements for ordination. Passed highly by a voice
vote.
14-C Accommodations on Amending G-3.0106: This
purposed amendment would require that all councils of
the church adopt and implement a child protection
policy. Passed unanimously with a voice vote.
14-D Minimum Composition of a Presbytery On
Amending G-3.0301: This amendment proposes that the
minimum composition of a presbytery is ten duly
constituted sessions and ten teaching elders. Passed
highly with a voice vote.
14-E Interreligious Stance On Amending G-5.0102: This
amendment proposes that all levels will be open to and
will seek opportunities for respectful dialogue and
mutual relationships with entities and persons from
other religious traditions. Passed highly with a voice
vote.
14-F Marriage On Amending W-4.9000: This
amendment proposes and reads in part: the sacrificial
love that unites the couple sustains them as faithful and
responsible members of the church. If they meet the
requirements of the civil jurisdiction in which they intend
to marry, a couple may request that as service of
Maumee Valley Presbytery meeting contd
-
March 2015 Page 4
Christian marriage be conducted by a teaching elder in
the Presbyterian Church USA.
(2.) A couple requesting a service of Christian marriage
shall receive instruction from the teaching elder, who
may agree to the couples request only if, in the
judgment of the teaching elder, the couple
demonstrates sufficient understanding of the nature of
the marriage covenant and commitment. The teaching
elder witnesses the couples promise and pronounces
God blessing upon their union.
Nothing herein shall compel a teaching elder to perform
nor compel a session to authorize the use of church
property for a marriage service that the teaching elder
or the session believes is contrary to the teaching
elders or the sessions discernment of the Holy Spirit
and their understanding of the Word of God. This
amendment passed by a 64-25-2 written ballot vote.
It became very obvious as the various speakers spoke
both for and against this amendment that a majority of
those present were for the proposed amendment.
There was prayer after the vote for those who were
hurting.
It is very clear that we here at Firelands, our Pastor and
our Session, have the authority to discern for ourselves
how we want to apply this amendment.
It is your Sessions intention to keep you aware of the
actions of Presbytery. As disciples of Jesus Christ we
shall have our own opinions but we shall also honor the
opinions of others in our church.
God Bless, Bill Sharp
New Beginnings Update Your New Beginnings Leadership Team, even though
spread across the country, has been meeting roughly on
a monthly basis. We have chosen a resource entitled,
Joining God in the Neighborhood to guide us as we
look to see what God is already doing in our community
that he wants us to be involved in. We will be tapping
existing knowledge and experience in the community
from other churches, service organizations, and
community residents themselves, in our process as
well as you, the Congregation of Firelands Presbyterian
Church. We will be in a more active mode when we are
all back in Port Clinton by the 15th of May. Pastor
Mark will be joining our Team meetings in April we are
all praying for his full recovery. See you all soon!

Preschool News March has been a busy and exciting month in preschool. We started the month by celebrating Dr. Seuss. We read his
books, did silly learning activities, and made lots of fun projects. We celebrated Wacky Wednesday and dressed up in
silly clothes for the day. We ended our week of Dr. Seuss by reading and eating Green Eggs and Ham! All of the
children at least tried the green eggs and many of them asked for seconds!
We celebrated St. Patrick's day with lots shamrocks, rainbows and the color green. The leprechauns visited our
classroom and left us special treats of Leprechaun Dust (Pistachio Pudding) and Gold Chocolate Coins! We made and
set a trap to catch the leprechauns, but we were unsuccessful again this year! Thank you to all of the parents for
donating fruit, treats, and supplies for our party. The kids loved eating their fruit rainbow and snacks!
We ended the month learning about Spring and Easter.
We have been working hard on writing our names, learning our letters, and rhyming! We have also been able to get
outside some this month!
We will be closed Good Friday (April 3, 2015) and Easter Monday (April 6, 2015. We hope everyone has a Happy
Easter!
