Dear Congregants,

March has been another busy andsuccessful month for Temple Isaiah, and I hope many of you had a chanceto participate in the many events thatwere held. The Temple Isaiah Jewish FilmFestival was a huge success. Theopening-night event and all the filmswere well attended. The films were ofhigh quality and received considerable praise from thosewho saw them. The success of the Festival lies in the hardwork of Eileen Stern and her committee. They workedexceedingly hard, resulting in a truly high qualityexperience for all who attended. Thank you to Eileen andcommittee … and thank you to all of you who helpedpromote it and attended. Temple Isaiah’s Women’s Auxiliary (TIWA) was alsovery busy in March. Their High Tea, held in our WarsawBallroom, was a big success. Beyond planning aspectacular afternoon, they prepared all the delicious food, had a fashion show featuring our Temple Isaiah ladies, arranged entertainment (including our Rabbi singing “If IWas a Rich Man” from Fiddler), and held an auction. Thisis the second event put on by TIWA (remember the greatPotluck Supper they arranged and facilitated for theShabbat of Chanukah?) since its recent establishment. Welook forward to many more TIWA events for all toparticipate in. Congratulations to Shoshana Barer andTIWA. Also in March, we celebrated Purim with the reading ofthe Megillah by Rabbi Lazar, followed by a celebration withwine and cheese and lively discussion. Temple Isaiah/Jewish Community Center has beenawarded the DesertBusiness Association’s(DBA) 2016 OutstandingCommunity ServiceOrganization. We wererecognized for being “ahub of events - not onlyf o r t h e J e w i s hcommunity, but as anopen and welcomingcommunity center for people of all faiths, ages, income levels, gender, sexualorientation, and sexual identity in Palm Springs and theentire Coachella Valley.” This is something we should alltake pride in. If you would like to participate in the Seder on the firstnight, and do not have a Seder to be a part of, please callthe office and we will see if we can help you. Vicki joins me in wishing you all a very happy Pesach.

Shalom,

Passover Hagaddah, Amsterdam, 1662, Gross Family Collection, Tel Aviv

❖From the Rabbi’s StudyRabbi David Lazar

Sitting at the Seder, we findourselves preoccupied with manythings: How long will it take? Did thematzah balls and gefilte fish come outthe way they’re supposed to? Will Ihave to read from the Haggadah? Howmuch longer will this go on? Whydidn’t we use the “real” tune? Willthere really be enough haroset to goaround? Does red horseradish countfor marror? Really, when will we get to the food? It is, however, far more difficult to concern ourselves with the actual message of the Seder as stated clearlyin the Haggadah: “Each of us must see ourselves as ifwe are the ones who have been brought out of Egypt.”We are, according to our tradition, commanded to takeourselves out of our own reality and imagine that we aresomeplace and sometime else. For many, this means going into great detailregarding the biblical story or the way it was told by therabbis of the Talmud. For others, it is a chance todiscuss other periods of Jewish history in which ourpeople were persecuted. And still, there are those whobring this back to themselves in the most personal wayin an attempt to free themselves of the particular“bondage” - be it a toxic relationship, substance abuse,a bad job or anger management - and liberate theirsouls. All of this is good and useful, but I would like tomake another suggestion that slightly alters thetraditional interpretation of the quote above, one thatasks us to imagine ourselves as slaves in our worldtoday. While most people would say that slavery wasoutlawed and ceased to exist in the US over 150 yearsago, they know that it has continued to thrive outside ofour country all these years. Images of children forcedinto carrying weapons and working in sweatshops andfactories cross our screens from time to time. Human

trafficking - yes, the actual sale of a human being - is

also in the news and featured in novels, TV and movies, mostly with regards to parts of Asia, the Middle Eastand Africa. But in truth, it has really never stopped in our owncountry; it has just taken different forms. From transientfarm workers and domestic nannies to sex workers andhealth aids, individuals, who seemingly have no otherchoice, find themselves in a situation of exhaustinglabor and restricted freedom. For more informationabout this, please check out:http://www.endslaverynow.org/ & http://www.csmonitor.com/World/Topics/Human-Trafficking-Series.

What I’m saying is that this year we ought to challengeourselves beyond the traditional text of the Haggadah, beyond the wonderful food and company and makeourselves just a little uncomfortable. Instead of dwellingupon our own slavery - both collective and personal - wetake on the issue of the slavery of others. Would you like some ideas of how your Seder at homemight be more meaningful and interesting for those aroundthe table? Please join us for a pre-Pesach workshop thisWednesday, April 6 (see page 2). And for those who arestill looking for a place to be on the second night, we stillhave room at our communal Seder (for more see page 3). May this Pesach be a liberating experience for all!

Our opening film, special guest Neil Friedman ofMenemsha Films, and reception held at the TempleSunday afternoon, was a great addition to the Festival ...and the six films that followed were incredible. Kudos toEileen for her selection of these amazing films. The filmfestival is growing every year. Truly, it’s an event TempleIsaiah is deservedly proud of!

Seder is around the corner. We have moved theCommunity Seder to the second night of Pesach. Therehave been some rumblings about the price but, honestly,it is only $4 more than last year. A huge “thank you” to Sherman’s Deli for sponsoringthe Shabbat dinner we held in February, allowing us touse the funds collected as a fundraiser for the Temple! Itwas an overwhelming success and we raised $1,700! Itwas a great evening. I know I personally had a wonderfultime. When you are at Sherman’s, please tell Sam,Gordon or Janet how much you appreciate theirgenerosity.

Speaking of which, we have scheduled our nextShabbat dinner for May 6th, the first Friday of May,following our 6:30 pm services.
