~Counselor’s Corner~

Pearl of the Month

It’s Not Bullying Occasionally I will get a report from a student that So-and-so is bullying me. Immediately I take action, because I know that it is a much clearer investigation if I can interview students the same day or next day. But most of the time I discover that it is NOT really bullying.

This concerns me. Someone who thinks they are bullied may take a victim role which means they consider themselves powerless. I would rather have all students feel empowered. Or someone who is called a bully for a one time action, and does not exhibit bullying behavior is unfairly labeled and that negatively impacts them. I would rather have all students seen in a positive light.

So what can I do about this misnomer? I continue to instruct students that bullying is one sided, mean be-havior that is repeated over time and doesn’t stop when you try a strategy to make it stop. In contrast, unkind be-havior that is NOT bullying is an infrequent behavior or a MUTUAL disagreement that students can be empowered to stop. I work hard in every class during class lessons to teach students strategies to get mean behavior to stop, or to resolve mutual disagreements by talking it out. When students do that, it feels good and builds confidence.

So what can parents do? Don’t label every mean act as bullying. Help to empower your child by role play-ing how to respond the next time, and exude your confi-dence in them, that they can get it to stop. You can re-mind them about “Kelso’s choices” of ways to solve problems: Wait and cool off, Go to another game, Talk it Out, Share and take turns, Ignore it, Walk away, asser-tively Tell them to stop.

If it is really bullying, and your child has tried two ways to try to get it to stop, please have them tell an adult or give us a call!

From Mrs. Blough, Principal Assistant~

Dear Lidgerwood Families,

March is a big learning month for us here at Lidgerwood. If you get a chance to “walk the hallway walls” you will see evidence of amazing student learning. Please take the opportuni-ty to see what is happening in our K-6 classrooms.

Spring Conferences are March 28-March 31. This is an exciting time of year because parents, students and teachers come together to talk about students’ strengths, areas of growth and how to continue to work together to support each child’s individual learning needs. Remember school will be dismissed at 1:00 pm Monday-Thursday to allow conferencing to take place. Late night conferences will be held on Tuesday, March 29 from 2:00-7:30 p.m.

Reminders:

Spring Break is April 4-8…No School that week!

Smarter Balanced Assessment will start for grades 3-6 in April and run through the month of May. If possible, please schedule appoint-ments on days your child is not being as-sessed.

School starts at 8:30 a.m. SHARP!! Please make sure your students are on time and ready to learn.

As always, we want to thank you for your support and for sending us your most wonderful children. It continues to be an honor to work with and for you each and every day. Enjoy your time with you fami-lies.

Sincerely,

Eileen Blough, Principal Assistant

Lidgerwood’s Parent Teacher Organization welcomes your participation in our many

school activities! If you are interested, please contact Sarah Moses at 354-3234 or

[email protected]

The PTO is excited to bring the Pacific Science Center to our school. They will be here April 15th. The theme is Rock N Roll; all about geolo-gy! The students will attend an assem-bly, there will be exhibits and classroom lessons. Lidgerwood students will have the opportunity to learn about rock for-mations, fossils, magma mountains and much more! We also wanted to share that with everyone's hard work, your PTO Board and members approved the pur-chase of new cross country shirts for Lidgerwood. The current shirts were very old; we are so happy to invest in new ones for our students! Also, Mrs. Roberts has been working diligently with our Lidgerwood choir and we are very pleased happy to purchase new shirts for them as well!

Lidgerwood PTO Thanks You for ALL of Your Support!

Sincerely,

Sarah Merriex, PTO President

CAC At the CAC meeting, we had the pleasure of hearing from Mr. Doug Wordell, the Director of Nutrition Services. He had a chance to talk about the nutrition choices in our schools and to also share the infor-mation about Scratch Cooking. We are very fortunate Lidgerwood has adopted this program along with other schools in our district. Their goal is to offer Scratch Cooking to all schools in the next three years. Nutrition Services is working very hard to create a healthy school environment which is critical for the lifetime health of our chil-dren and community.

WINDSTORM MAKE-UP DAYS

May 16 and June 16.

VACCINATIONS UP TO DATE? Washington state’s new chickenpox vaccine require-ment means ALL students K-12 will be required to have two doses by the first day of school next fall. Students who already had two doses of the vaccine do not need to repeat it.

As a reminder, students starting sixth grade in the fall must have a Tdap shot.

Washington State law requires that each child attend-ing school be adequately immunized according to the Washington State Board of Health.

Registration and attendance are contingent upon ei-ther adequate immunization or exemption from im-munization. Find more information, including a list of required vaccinations for the 2016-17 school year, at spokaneschools.org.

Spring Testing~ As we approach Spring, students will have oppor-tunities to practice for the upcoming Smarter Bal-anced Assessment testing that will take place after Spring Break. These practice tests are to help stu-dents be prepared, but should not be stressful.

As parents, you can help your students by making sure they get adequate sleep and proper nutrition. Also, you can be their best cheerleader! We en-courage all students to work hard and put forth their very best effort. And, at the end of the day, when we have done our very best, we can celebrate our personal success!

Lifelong learning is challenging ourselves to learn something new, overcome obstacles, and be the very best we can be!

Bicycles, Balls, Etc. At School Parents make the decision as to whether their child may or may not ride a bike to school. It is the recom-mendation of the school that students in kindergarten and 1st grade do not ride their bikes to school.

Students who ride bikes to school are expected to do the following:

*Bicycles must be walked across patrolled crossings.

*Bicycles must be walked on the school grounds and sidewalks.

*All bikes must be parked in the racks provided and locked. The school cannot accept the responsibility for damaged or stolen bicycles.

*Bikes are not to be ridden on the school grounds during the hours of 8:00am to 4:00pm.

*No skateboards, scooters, heelies, rollerblades, basketballs, soccer balls, etc. are allowed at school.

POSITIVE

ATTITUDE

ACT

RESPONSIBLY WORK

TO SUCCEED

SHOW

RESPECT

Lidgerwood Leopards use a

Positive attitude, Acting responsibly by Working to

succeed and Showing respect.

It is highly important that parents always remain directly involved with your chil-dren (s) activities at school.

Following are some things you as parents can do to help your child with his/her school life:

*Work cooperatively with teachers, the principal, nurse, counselor, and other school staff.

*Show enthusiasm and interest in the things your child is doing in school.

*Help your child to understand the need to be considerate of others and to respect their property and rights.

*Encourage your child to tell you about school activities and listen sincerely when he/she does so.

*Call the school when unsure of school matters.

*Hear both the child’s and the teacher’s version of a controversial issue.

*Praise your child for work well done and praise for improvement. (Improvement may take place in work and study habits, conduct, attitude, and specific skills.)

*Respect your child’s turn in the family to help him/her learn to take turns at school.

*Visit school often and accept invitations for classroom and school activities.

*Help your child schedule time so that he/she has an opportunity for study time at home when necessary.

*Lastly and most importantly, be the role model you hope your children to be. You are their heroes!

Respectful vs Disrespectful

Respectful: Showing respect; considerate and polite. Disrespectful: Showing no respect; lacking in courtesy to elders or superiors; rude; impolite.
