“Multihazard Design of the Building Envelope: Important Considerations of Wind and Seismic Interaction with Blast

Requirements, and Approaches for Efficient Designs” Aldo McKay, P.E.

from Protection Engineering Consultants

This presentation will provide architects, engineers, and construction professionals with an overview of key factors to consider when designing building envelope components against wind, seismic and blast loads.. The presentation will present case studies with real situations that may be encountered in the design of curtainwall, storefronts and other façade components and will provide “lessons-learned” recommendations on how to effectively deal with or avoid problems. “Typical approaches” for designing envelope components will be illustrated, and an effective process for specifying, reviewing and approving delegated design items will be discussed. The presentation will also discuss the use of advanced engineering tools and how they may be used to improve your design. Attendees will also be exposed to government and industry criteria and how they may be applied to different types of buildings.

President’s Message By Asma Momin, PE

I like to start with a toast:

“Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the

square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules. And they have no

respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About

the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human

race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the

people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.” Rob

Siltanen, chairman and chief creative officer at Siltanen & Partners.

I love this quote and hope it inspires you. Spring is the season to plant seeds, the season of birth

and new beginnings. This spring, I want to challenge you to take a step towards your dreams, the

ones you don’t share with people, the ones that may not be a guaranteed success. I want you to

take the leap of faith in yourself. Turn your heads from the naysayers and takes step towards

making it happen. I believe everyone has a little crazy in them. Show the world yours—the good

crazy!

Speaking of dreams, I have some news for you. We have a date and venue set for the banquet

this year! This year’s banquet will be held on Saturday, November 5th at Brookhaven Country

Club. Mark your calendars! Denny O’Connell and his team have been working hard to get the

date and location finalized, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them. I expect to

see you there showing off your “crazy moves” on the dance floor.

We have asked for feedback, and I have heard lots of great ideas! Now, I want to hear how you

are going to help us make it happen. Brad Cheshire, chairs our Technical Activities committee is

looking for ideas for topics. Speak with him, ask him how you can help. If you want to volunteer

for something else, our contacts are on the last page of the newsletter. We would love to hear

from you. This year, we have had people step up and volunteer and people that have asked to

volunteer. Cheers to them and all our past volunteers! I want to build on this momentum so it will last long after my term as the president!

We are always looking for visionaries that are willing to volunteer for a cause greater than their own and can promote our profession above

any special interest.

While I am writing this, there is a song playing in the background.

“Hope when the moment comes, you'll say

I, I did it all I, I did it all I owned every second that this world could give I saw so many places, the things that I did With every broken bone, I swear I lived”

-One Republic, “I lived”.

See you at the next meeting.

Wishing your all the best,

Asma
