From the Desk of Pastor David Maxfield I am caught between the already and the not yet. My writing assignment is share some thoughts of April, spring and the Easter season in the life of the follower of Jesus. That sounds good but… it’s Tuesday of Holy Week and try as I might I cannot wish myself to Easter and beyond without walk-ing the path which leads to the Upper Room, the Garden, the Judgement Hall and to a hill far away, where an Old Rugged Cross stands. I could write about spring but, ma nature seems to come to her senses these past few days, a bit of snow, a chill in the wind and a drop in the tem-perature brings out the wizened cynic in me and I remember an old adage, “IN like a lamb, out like a…” What’s worse is I am concerned that when the calendar turns to April, nature will realize that she spoiled us in March and that will only mean it’s way too early to put away the shovel. See what I mean? I’m caught between the already and the not yet. Then it occurred to me (inspiration or a Homer Simpson “well duh” moment?) isn’t that the reality of life. We live between the already and the not yet. Every day, each step along the way, each mo-ment between the already and the not yet. That is why I like Saturday, not just any Saturday but the one between Good Friday and Easter. The contrast could not be more striking. Already Jesus has been crucified, died and was buried. Al-ready the disciples had fled into the safety of the self, hidden in fear, and paralyzed by the un-known. But not yet… the first day of the New Creation had not yet dawned…. The first word from beyond had not yet been spoken and He had not been seen, touched nor had he had breakfast with the boys. That is also why I love the holy name of God. You remember the story of the burning bush, Moses on the mountain, and the voice which crackled with the fire of heaven calling old Mo by name. When Moses asked for the name of the One who spoke, do you remember what God revealed? Do you remember God’s name. “I am”. I saw a poster once which seared this truth into my soul and memory, My name is I am If you seek me in the past in your memory,
you will not find me For my name is not “I was”: If you seek me in the future when you agenda is finished, I may not be found For my name is not “I will be”; So seek where you are today, right now, this moment And you will know For my name is “I am”. Sometimes it is good to be caught between the already and the not yet, because right here, right now God is. Shalom, Pastor David Ministry Shout Outs…. To the crew who served the Easter Supper at Banquet West; to the par-ents and caring adults who joined their students for the First Communion retreat; to those who pray for this ministry, for the congregation, the community and for you and me. (watch for more “shout outs” each month… is there a person, a group, a ministry we should lift up? Let me know!)

Resurrection: Reality or Rumor?
Sundays- 9:45 am
During the month of April, we will be exploring the mystery of the resurrection. Come and join in the conver-
sation, bring your questions, bring a friend! Together we will search the witness of Scripture, history and sci-
ence to gain a better understanding of what we mean when we confess “ … on the third day he rose again.”
April 10- The Biblical Witness- come and explore the unique witness of the 4 Gospels,
April 17- The Mystery of the Shroud- The Shroud of Turin; is it the burial cloth of Jesus or a
historical hoax. What does the image on the cloth reveal?
April 24- 1 Corinthians 15- Why did Paul devote so much attention to the resurrection? What
did he say? What is its relevancy to life in the 21st century?

Gospel Seed…April 2016
A Monthly Update from the
Western North Dakota Synod Office
Gospel Proclaimers Needed…
It has never been a secret that finding people to serve
as pastors in rural places is difficult. To be honest, you
and I are a part of the problem. We have not done a
good job of raising up leaders from our own territory to
serve in rural places. Together, with the Holy Spirit’s
help, we can change this situation. It’s time to start
talking about the joy of Gospel proclamation. So, it hits
me; I get to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ! I
need to let others know the joy of that calling… In
times of joy and sorrow, in the midst of Spirit-filled re-
newal gatherings or around council tables in the midst
of conflict – I get to proclaim that Jesus has risen! That
sin, death, and darkness were defeated by the Cross.
We are “earthen vessels” easily chipped or cracked,
yet it is through these vessels that God has chosen to
share the Good News. Is the work difficult sometimes?
Yes. Is this calling frustrating? Sure. But… it is also
a gift. Who else might be called to ministry in Christ’s
church? Think about it. Pray about it. Let that person
know their gifts are needed for Jesus’ sake.
A New Path for Theological Education…
So, what else can be done to provide high quality the-
ological education, while at the same time, providing
pastoral leadership in rural places? And, if we are go-
ing to tackle real issues about the need for leaders, how
about we work to reduce or eliminate student debt at the
same time? The Western North Dakota Synod, in part-
nership with Wartburg Theological Seminary, is in the
process of launching a pilot project aimed at addressing
those issues. The Rural Distributive Learning Cohort
will allow students to enter a Master of Divinity Degree
Program while serving in a congregational context. We
believe that serving as a minister, while taking Master
level courses, will help shape a candidate for Christ-
centered service.
This program will not be for every student or for eve-
ry congregation. In short, congregations will need to be
relatively healthy - understanding they are called to
look beyond themselves to serve their neighbor for Je-
sus’ sake. Students will need to be self-motivated, able
to juggle multiple tasks, and open for an adventure.
Our goal is to have two students accepted into this
program by this fall. We look forward to sharing more
with you about this program as it progresses.
Tilling the Soil…
It is not too late! There is still time to sign up for the
“Tilling the Soil” workshop. This one day event is
meant to spark our creative imagination and get us won-
dering where God is calling us to reach out in new loca-
tions and ways to proclaim God’s grace and mercy giv-
en to the world through Jesus.
Come Till the Soil with us Saturday, April 9th from
9:30AM to 3:00PM. We will welcome Rev. Ruben Du-
ran, Director of New Starts within the ELCA, and Rev.
Keith Zeh, Director of Evangelical Mission for the NW
Minnesota and Eastern North Dakota.
Together, we will talk about how the larger church
can help identify, explore, and possibly launch new
ministries. Often, this does not mean building a new
building – rather, it means letting your imagination flow
freely.
We invite you to grab a couple of people from your
congregation to come, learn more, and see what kind of
creativity might begin to well up.
Synod Assembly:
Now is the time to register for Synod Assembly. Our
theme, “Living in God’s Abundance”, will help us ex-
plore the abundance of gifts contained in our congrega-
tions and communities. We invite you to bring as many
people as you would like, so, they, too, can learn about
how God gifts people for the sake of serving others.
Once again, there will be an art show featuring the
talents of people from the Western North Dakota Syn-
od; please encourage people to participate. They can
register their items through the synod web page.
Remember the Synod Mission Gala… It will once
again be hosted by Lord of Life Lutheran Church. A
limited number of tickets are available for the meal and
auction of talents; get yours either online or by calling
the synod office. We are also looking for items for the
live and silent auctions; your donations are greatly ap-
preciated!
Blessings,
Mark Narum

Bill Christensen
“Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; He has risen! Luke 24:6 The resurrection of Jesus Christ is in its self the reason for our Christian faith. When the disci-ples and others watched Jesus die on the cross on Good Friday they thought his ministry and theirs was over. When Mary and other women went to the tomb that morning and found the body missing, found angels telling then Jesus was not there and to tell the disciples to go to Galilee where they will see Him just as He had told them began what we call our Christian faith.
We believe that as God resurrected Jesus from the grave God will resurrect us too from our graves. We wonder whether that we will actually look physical or will we be spiritual with just our souls being raised. We actually don’t know. When Paul was asked this question, “But someone will ask, how are the dead raised? With what kind of body do they come?” I Corinthians 15:35-36 Paul said we just trust God’s promise that as God raised Jesus, God will raise us too. Works for me. I am reminded of this every year especially as we celebrate Easter.
But the thing is every single day we are being resurrected. We die to our sins every day and thru God’s continual forgiveness granted by His grace we are reborn, forgiven, and resurrect-ed. He is risen indeed!
