research of the book’s author, Gerri Chanel. Saving Mona Lisa details

the heroic efforts to remove all artwork from the

Louvre for safekeeping during WWII.

Mrs. Chanel is a prize-winning freelance journalist, associate professor at York

College of City University of New York, and a CPA licensed in both New York

and Connecticut. She lived in France for five years, where she began the research on her book. Previously, Mrs. Chanel was a consultant for interna-

tional companies.

T&C Dinner

Thursday, April 14 - Social time: 5:45 Dinner: 6:30 $40 inclusive

We are happy to welcome Coach Paul Assaiante, Head Men’s Squash Coach at Trinity College, to speak with us on Thursday, April 14th. Coach Assaiante has brought the Trinity

men’s squash team back to the College Squash Association (CSA) National Championship

Finals for the 19th year in a row, for 2014-2015. The Bantams also came through with their

15th national title with a 7-2 win against St. Lawrence in the finals. Coach Assaiante was

co-winner of Trinity’s Athletic Department Coach of the Year Award in 2014-2015. Coach Assaiante has guided Trinity to many national titles, including 13 consecutive CSA

National titles from 1999 to2011, and 252 wins in a row before a 5-4 loss at Yale in January

2012 closed the book on the longest winning streak in the history of intercollegiate varsity

sports. The team will forever remain a legendary piece of history at Trinity, where squash has

been enthusiastically embraced. It can easily be seen why this team is one of the most feared

in college sports.

Coach Assaiante will speak to us about his outstanding career as a college coach who has

been able to guide the men’s squash team at Trinity College to an exceptional place in college

sports. Coach Assiante graduated from Springfield College, and holds a master’s degree from

Long Island University. Sara Markham, Chair

T&C Lunch and Listen, Wednesday, May 11. $23.50 inclusive.

Lucy Ferriss, the writer-in-residence at Trinity College, will present her experiences in Pakistan and writing the book, A Sister to Honor, which re-

lates the efforts of a young Pakistani woman to attend college in New England

and the subsequent cultural discordance which inevitably ensues. (An Honor

killing in Pakistan refers to the murder of an offending daughter who has dishonored the family by associating in any way with a man

who is not a relative. There were 933 honor killings in Paki-

stan in the last two years. One 15-year old was killed by her

mother for looking twice at a man passing on a motorcycle.)

Lunch and Listen begins at 11:30 for mingling with lunch served at noon. During

lunch the speaker begins, with the intent of finishing by 1:00. Lunch and Listen provides a perfect venue for a quick and interesting lunch if you are trying to get

back to work, as is Lucy.

Congratulations to T & C member Sherry Brown, who has been

named a 2016 Malta House of Care Wonder Woman. Sherry

served on the board of Komen CT for the Cure, as a St. Francis

Hospital and Medical Center corporator and a Bushnell Overse-

er. We know Sherry best as the Chair of our Community Rela-

tions Committee. She and her committee have been responsible

for working diligently to keep us in touch with our neighbors in

Hartford and, particularly, the Asylum Hill neighborhood. Our

members continue to make us proud and Sherry is an inspiring example of using

one’s time and energy to improve others’ lives.

BOARD OF GOVERNORS HIGHLIGHTS

March 2016

The Board met on March 1st with all but two members present. Lisa Scalise, Chair of Member Admissions Committee reported 5 resignations and

one candidate who was approved for Resident Membership.

Nancy Brennan, President, requested that all Standing Committees Chairs prepare

and submit their annual reports by March 25th. These will be distributed at the An-

nual Meeting on April 21st. The BOG decided that the Annual Meeting should start

at 5:30 PM, versus the 5 PM time previously considered. Norma Glover and Lisa Scalise presented the proposed 2016/2017 budget which had previously been ap-

proved by the Finance Committee. The club’s financials are strong. Dues and mortgage assessments will

remain the same. The budget also encompasses funds for potential special projects involving communications, the library and Lyman Committee Budgets were decided. Fundraising events included in

the budget were a spring auction and a craft fair in the fall.

Projections for the 2016/2017 fiscal year were made. After discussion, the Board unanimously passed the 2016/2017 budget and commended Norma, Lisa, the

Budget Committee, Michael and Mary Ann for a job well done. Nancy presented the results from the 3 focus areas at the February 13th Members’ Forum. These results

were listed in the order of most member interest and Nancy will be communicating the results to the

membership. Based upon the recommendations of the Nominating Committee, the Board approved two changes to the

2016/2017 Officer and Committee slate.

Michael Duval shared two possible new features for club members- one for every day and one as a

surprise for the members. These were favorably received by the BOG. Stay tuned for more information.

Honor Bar Do you ever want to pop by your club in the afternoon but unsure if the bar will be open? You spoke up

at the Members’ Forum and we heard you. Beginning on Tuesday, March 15 from 3 to 5pm an honor bar

will be set up in the library. Full beverage service will resume at 5pm. The Honor bar will feature red and white wine, glassware, small carafes to measure a perfect pour and

some complimentary vegetable crudités and accompanying dip. There will be a small pad for your mem-

bership number and signature to record your visit. This Honor Bar will be available Tuesdays through

Fridays. Giving you the option of this Honor Bar allows you to drop by the club without notice for a spontaneous

glass of wine to celebrate a good day at the office or the welcome signs of an early spring.

April 2016 MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Meet Sally Richter

If you value and enjoy spending time at the Town and County Club’s beautiful Lyman

House, you may wish to introduce yourself to Sally Richter and thank her.

Sally joined the club in 1994 while still a language teacher at Glastonbury High School.

She retired in 1998. Over the next few years she served in various club leadership

roles eventually being elected Club President in 2003. Like today, it was an interesting

time of change demanding strong leaders willing to make important decisions that

would positively affect the future of the club and its members. While Sally served as

President, a new general manager and chef were hired. Phil Schenck, then Town

Manager of Avon, was the first man to serve on the Board of Governors. Toward the

end of her Presidency, it would have been understandable if Sally had chosen to take some well-deserved time

off from the board and committee work and just spend time relaxing at the club.

Instead, Sally continued to be an integral part of the club’s present and future. Thanks to the vision and com-

mitment of Sally and a handful of committed members, the Lyman Heritage Preservation Foundation (LHPF), a

501(C)3 was formed in 2007. Since then generous Town and County Club members have pledged and donated

approximately $700,000 to LHPF, and $300,000 has been allocated to various projects in and on the Lyman

House: repairing roofs, fixing leaks, opening the front entry. Future plans include replacing chimneys and

renovating the parking, landscaping and lighting. The visionary members who formed the Lyman Heritage

Foundation and generously provided and continue to provide funding do so to ensure this home’s future

remains a gathering place for club members for years to come.

In addition to serving the club, Sally has been actively involved with and a contributing member of the Junior

League of Hartford, served as Chair of the Permanent Commission on the Status of Women in Hartford, and

is a member of the Garden Club of Hartford.

The club continues to move forward into the future because of talented and committed members like Sally.

Ask Sally about the Lyman Heritage Preservation Foundation next time you see her and make sure you also

wish her a Happy 50th wedding anniversary with her husband Dale…her high school sweetheart and life

partner.

t SPOTLIGHT: THE HOSPITALITY COMMITTEE

The Hospitality Committee is responsible for meeting and greeting members

as they arrive for social events held at our club. Each member is warmly greet-

ed and given her name tag. Members of this committee also attend prospec-

tive member events and, if needed and act as hostesses for hospitality tables.

They are an integral part of creating the warm and gracious atmosphere that

we’ve come to expect at the Town and County.

SPOTLIGHT: MEMBER PERKS & PRIVILEGES OUR OVERNIGHT ACCOMODATIONS

The T&C Capital Spending Budget

(First in a series of club financial columns) What does “Capital Spending” mean? Capital spending refers to those items necessary to

maintain the facility (club house and grounds) for its intended purpose and which are not on-

going maintenance items.

How is our capital budget funded? Historically the club’s capital spending came from new member initiation

fees. In years when fewer new members join, less money is contributed to the capital budget and over the years

that forced a good deal of deferred maintenance. Beginning in 2013 the Board established a monthly capital charge of $5 per person. The capital charge fee was

made permanent in 2015. The Club now has two primary sources of money for capital projects: initiation fees and the monthly capital

charge. When a significant project is undertaken, such as the recent ballroom renovation, additional restricted

funds may be raised from such outside sources as the Lyman Heritage Preservation Foundation, other Club re-

sources (Summersby Auction proceeds) or private donations from generous members.

How much has been collected and how has it been spent? Capital Spending Funds received April 2013 through January 2016

Opening Balance 4/1/2013 $ 23,708

New member initiation fees $ 33,620

Capital Improvement Fees $ 60,698

Additional outside funding $ 38,579

Interest (minus fees) $ 74

TOTAL AVAILABLE $156,679

Capital Spending - Completed Projects April 2013 through January 2016

Ballroom renovation $ 76,949

Ice machine purchase $ 3,745

Network upgrade $ 18,510

Attic pipe repair $ 993

Dining room China replacement $ 11,057

Ballroom rooftop heater $ 11,490

Replace kitchen line stove $ 15,221

TOTAL COMPLETED PROJECTS $137,965

Ending Balance 1/31/2016 $ 18,714

What projects still need to be completed? The T&C clubhouse is an old facility and there will al-

ways be significant maintenance and refurbishment needed. This is a partial list of Capital projects

identified for 2016-2017 – costs shown are estimates:

Ballroom ramp from parking lot $ 7,000

Active leak, ballroom/flower room area $ 5,000

Sidewalk repair $ 5,000

Banquet china replacement $ 7,000

Dining room silverware replacement $ 2,500

Kitchen-Hatco fryer $ 2,500

Kitchen-2-Stacking convection oven $ 6,000

Ballroom doors to parking lot $ 2,500

Kitchen area porch, lattice & trim $ 2,500

$40,000

READERS FEAST Thursday April 14 at 5:45 pm. “Being Mortal” by Atul Gawande

Facilitator: Susan Brown

Medicine has triumphed in modern times, transforming birth, injury, and infectious disease from

harrowing to manageable. But in the inevitable condition of aging and death, the goals of

medicine seem too frequently to run counter to the interest of the human spirit. Nursing

homes, preoccupied with safety, pin patients into railed beds and wheelchairs. Hospitals isolate

the dying, checking for vital signs long after the goals of cure have become moot. Doctors,

committed to extending life, continue to carry out devastating procedures that in the end

extend suffering.

TUESDAY MORNING READERS April 12, 10:30 “All the Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr - Discussion

facilitated by Della Schultz From the highly acclaimed, multiple award-winning Anthony Doerr, the beautiful,

stunningly ambitious instant New York Times bestseller about a blind French girl and a

German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the

devastation of World War II.

MYSTERY BOOK GROUP Wednesday, April 20 | 5:45pm “The English Assassin” by Daniel Sylva

Art restorer and sometime spy Gabriel Allon, is asked to visit Zurich to clean the work of an

Old Master for a millionaire banker. But when he gets there he finds the corpse of his client

in a pool of blood beneath the masterpiece, and discovers that a secret collection of

priceless paintings - stolen by Nazis in the war - is missing. With the Swiss authorities trying

to pin the murder on Allon and a powerful cabal determined to make sure this wartime

secret remains buried, the art restorer must use all his former spy skills to find out the truth.

And with an assassin that he helped to train also on the loose, Allon will need all his wits just

to stay alive. June 15: Borderline by Liza Marklund

THE HOSPITALITY COMMITTEE NEEDS YOU!

Our Hospitality Committee is badly in need of new volunteers. The active members remaining are few, so we need

YOU!

Greeting members at events is an important part of the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the Club. It's an ideal

volunteer position for new members because while you're meeting and greeting, you're also connecting all those new

faces with names.

There are no committee meetings. Once a month the Chair sends out an email requesting volunteers for upcoming

events. You are free to choose. Then all that's involved is coming in a little early on the day of the event to pull the

tags with a partner and afterwards collecting the tags and filing them back.

Please call Judy Murray, program chair (860-232-7142) or email ([email protected]) if you are interested.

ship and participation in club events is an inspiration to us all.

Members of the club over 80 years of age may, at their request, combine two quarterly minimum charg-

es into one semi-annual minimum charge. The dollar amount of the minimum

remains the same, but this allows member who are 80+ to benefit from such seasonal usage as holidays

and other special events.
