From the Chair

ed our semi-annual board retreat in mid-March and have created and made public a Request for Proposal (RFP) process for a new Association Management Company (AMC) to manage the day to day operations of our association.

The one-day retreat was very productive and engaging. We would like to thank Carol McGury, Executive Vice President, SmithBucklin for flying in to help facilitate the day. She ensured we all stayed engaged and kept the conversation on task. Several action items from this meeting will be presented to the members at the 2017-2018 Annual Meeting where we will introduce and vote on some Bylaw changes.

One immediate change is a bit of a re-shuffling of our committees. Now more than ever, we need dedicated members to not only become com-mittee members, but also step up into committee leadership roles as a Chair or Co-Chair. Be on the lookout for more information on this or pos-sibly even a phone call from a friendly board member!

The latter, the RFP process, was a decision the board determined was necessary. As we have been working with a great partner in Courtesy Associates for many, many years, we felt it our due diligence to our members to open this process and allow them to have a part, a voice in the future of AMPs. This decision was not taken lightly and I person-ally would like to thank all of the Board Members, D’Arcy Klingle and Annemarie Selvitelli for their assistance in creating the RFP. The RFP can be viewed on the AMPs website at www.ampsweb.org. The submission deadline is April 3.

As my year as chair is now coming to an end in just a few short months, I want to ensure that AMPs is recognized within our industry as a thought-leader through our educational events and continues to be recognized for our Special Events and of course, our multitude of networking op-portunities. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to me at [email protected] or to any of the board members.

laughter. I’m guessing that most of you reading this might en-joy this activity as well, given that we are all members of this hospitality organization.

I used to worry that my apartment wasn’t big enough and that my dining room table only seats four. And I always thought I had to make all the food from scratch, and plenty of it.

But now, after years of stressing about having guests over, I realize that entertaining is more about getting people togeth-er, making them feel welcome and in the words of Ina Garten (one of my favorite Chefs) “The key word here is FUN”.

Now that spring is upon us, and I’ll be entertaining more, (since I can take the party out-doors), I thought I’d share with you my thoughts and strate-gies for a stress free gathering of your favorite people.

First, BE ORGANIZED. A little bit of advanced planning can really go a long way and keep you calm as the date approach-es. A trick I learned from my adorable Mom is to label your dishes. What I mean by that is if you are serving a lot of hors d’oeuvres, be sure to set out your platters, plates, bowls, tongs, serving spoons... ahead of time, and put a little sticky note on the dish with the item that will be served on it. I know it sounds corny, but it really helps.

If you are doing a more formal seated dinner, set the table a few days in advance. I person-ally really enjoy this part, (even with a small table) because I get to use special dishes that are family heirlooms. And don’t worry about whether or not

everything matches, people don’t care about that, they are just happy to be invited.

Keep the menu simple and try to have everything done be-fore your guests arrive. That way you too can be a guest at your party, rather than stuck in the kitchen when everyone else is having a good time. I’m always keen on serving soup. Whether it is hot or cold, as an appetizer in cute little tea cups or as a main course, paired with some crusty warm bread from the bakery and a big green salad, I love the fact that it can be made ahead and is a hearty item that fills people up.

Let Me Entertain You!(Continued from previous page)

If you are new to throwing parties and you think that hosting a cocktail party or a seated dinner is too daunting, try doing a late morning brunch instead. You can select a menu item like an egg bake that is assembled the night before and pop it in the oven right before the guests are due to arrive. Pair it with some fresh fruit and some muffins.

Plus, doing a brunch can be easier on the budget when it come to the drinks you are serving. Coffee is a nice beverage to have on hand for a brunch, but for my family and friends, we prefer a little bubbly with a splash of OJ or Cranberry in-stead. Or if you’re not a fan of champagne or prosecco, try a Michelda. It’s one of my new favorites, maybe perhaps be-

cause it sounds like my name, but most likely because it is more refreshing to me than a Bloody Mary. There are lots of recipes for this, but the basic ingredients are beer, tomato juice and fresh squeezed lime juice. Add some hot sauce if you like it, and serve in a chilled, salt-rimmed glass, delightful!

Last: dessert. When I start planning my menu, I’m always con-vinced that I’m going to make an insanely rich chocolate cake, or a beautiful fruit tart. But the reality of that is I run out of time and energy. So a more realistic approach to dessert for me is to buy it. Be it ice cream or brownies, just a little bite of something sweet at the end of the meal is all people need. Al-though I recently came across an easy chilled chocolate-pea-nut butter cup recipe in The Earth Diet book, by Liana Werner-Grey, which can be made ahead and sounds delicious.

Remember: Fun, yours, theirs and everyone’s. <

SupplierRobert MacMC/comedian/speaker ~ Robert Mac Communications

Where is your hometown? I was born in Detroit but moved away when I was four. Brought my whole family with me to Tucson, AZ.

How did you get introduced to AMPs? I’ve been attending many networking events in the meeting/planning industry and someone recommended I join. I did not meet with any Russians while exploring this group. (Am I under oath?)

Fantasy career (no money or time limits)? I’m living the fan-tasy career! I make people laugh. And think. (Usually not in that order.)

How would you describe your perfect day? A perfect day would include a long run in the morning, a nice meal with the family, and a fun set at night.

Member Spotlight – April 2017Annemarie Selvitelli, AWCI

Do you have a person or event that most influenced your life? If so who and how? I think backpacking through Europe after college opened my eyes to things outside my comfort zone and to the world at large. Travel and experiencing dif-ferent cultures at that age was very influential. I would like to emphasize that I did not travel to Russia.

What trait or quality do you admire most in others? Sub-tlety.

What is the best movie/book you’ve seen or read lately? I’ve seen a lot of books lately! Stacks of ‘em. One that I saw for a while—and thoroughly enjoyed reading—was The Come-dians by Kliph Nesteroff. Tales from the old days of stand-up comedy.

Who is the person (living or dead) that you would like to have dinner with? I had lunch with Julia Child once! (I was working and she was eating). I’d like to have dinner with her so I could see her in action. But I’m going to say a grandfather that I never met.

What is your favorite thing to do in the Washington, DC area? See every exhibit in every museum. <

We don’t just eat our ice cream, we clean the bowl. We use the same approach with our design.
