AprilSpring is here! Say it with me Hallelujah! I’m so glad the weather is warmer and we see the sun more often.

Are you looking forward to Easter?

April is one of the busiest times of the year for those in ministry. As I write this, it’s the day of our 2nd Lent course sessions. I’ll be at the Rising Sun pub tonight discussing with others, how Jesus came and corrected our ‘seeing’ so that we value what’s truly valuable.

Holy Week and Easter are coming too and many of us are preparing for new things that week with our morning prayer times and interactive Children’s Easter Experience on Good Friday.

Following that it’s time for a joyful Easter Sunday service! This year I have a break from doing a sunrise service at 6:00am which I love doing. But it’s brutally early to wake up for.

However, the message is the best one in the whole universe, the infinite and divine only Lord crushed all wrong doing and death once for all time!!

The book of Colossians says in chapter 2:13... “When you were dead in your wrongdoing... God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our wrong doing... he took it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed all powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.” It’s great news! We are free to live life by grace through faith in Christ if we want to accept such an amazing gift.

Enjoy your Easter break and half term if you have one!

As for my family and I, we’ll be in the throws of moving into the Pensford rectory the week after Easter and my Mum is coming for a visit. Stop by to say “Hello” if you have a moment.

The following Monday, April 24th 7:00pm in All Saints Publow, is my official Celebration for a New Ministry. Refreshments to follow in Pensford Memorial Hall.

You’re very welcome to come along. Please RSVP so we can cater for accurate numbers.

April is a very full month with great things happening. See you on the roundabout during it!

God bless you,

Rev Denise Calverley

Chew Choral SocietyChew Valley Choral Society’s Spring concert at Church of All Saints, Publow.Works by Edward Elgar and American composer, Morten Lauridsen, feature in Chew Valley Choral Society’s spring concert on Saturday 22nd April which will be staged for the first time in the magnificent Church of All Saints, Publow.Morten Lauridsen is rated as America’s foremost choral composer. In 2007 he received the National Medal of Arts from the President in a White House ceremony “for his composition of radiant choral works combining musical beauty, power and spiritual depth that have thrilled audiences worldwide”.Lux Aeterna was composed in 2002 and is a firm favourite amongst Choral Societies all over the world. Edward Elgar’s Ave Verum was originally written in 1887 (with Ave Maria and Ave Maris Stella) while Elgar was organist at St George’s

Church in Worcester. It was a setting of the Pie Jesu in memory of William Allen, Worcester attorney for whom Elgar worked as a fifteen-year old. Elgar later arranged and orchestrated it as a setting of Ave verum corpus for publication in 1902. Other works being performed in the concert come from the repertoire of English church music and include Praise the Lord, O my soul by Samuel Wesley and O thou the central orb by Charles Wood. This Spring concert will be directed by David Bednall with David Whitehead playing the organ at the Church of All Saints, Publow on April 22nd at 7:30pm. Tickets £12 (students and children £6) from members, by telephoning 01275 333014 or on the door. Further press enquiries Christopher Lewis 01761 462269.

Pensford Local History GroupBrian Vowles was our March speaker. Brian is a member of the Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society and using photographs from the group’s comprehensive collection he gave us an insight to some of Keynsham’s long history by ‘walking’ us down the road to Bitton starting at the Parish Church. It was a really good device for introducing us to Roman, medieval, Tudor, Victorian and modern Keynsham. Many thanks to Brian! In April we are delighted to welcome Dr Jodie Lewis, archaeologist, broadcaster and Principal Lecturer at Worcester University. Jodie will be talking about recent archaeological research at Stanton Drew. Jodie has a particular interest in the archaeology of Somerset and the Mendips and is an excellent speaker, really bringing her subject to life. Please note that the talk will be on the 10 April starting at 7.00 p.m. (not the usual start time of 7.30). The venue for the talk will be the Church Room and all are welcome. Entry is £2.50 including refreshments.

School Highlights

A message from Mr BartonWell as always it’s been a very eventful week! Ofsted must have heard about Mrs Cook’s delicious lunches because they phoned just in time for our Mothers’ Day treat. Much of my time has been tied up with the inspector, Debbie Marklove, over the last couple of days. My message this week, though, is a particular pleasure to write:I have been so taken aback by the flood of good wishes from parents, volunteers and other members of the school community since the news of our inspection came in. Mrs Bishop even heard the news on the grapevine and sent us a good luck message! The parent response that was given through the Parent View questionnaire was staggeringly positive and played a very significant part in the inspection. Mrs Marklove was also extremely impressed with the pupils. As always, they were very well-behaved, courteous, hardworking and independent. In fact, Mrs Marklove told me that she could see so very clearly how the school is a real part of the community. She was also very impressed by all our staff, particularly of course the teachers and teaching assistants.Frustratingly, the actual grades from the inspection will not be finalised in her report until it comes out after Easter. However, I can say that we had very pleasing feedback throughout and the positive changes that began some time ago

have certainly made a real difference. So I would like to say a whole-hearted thank-you to all our parents, carers and children.

Pensford Fun RunSunday 30th April 1pm - Please make sure you have this date in your diary. It should be lots of fun, with a reduced distance of 2k to make it accessible to all children. Please note the changed start time, too, which brings the fun run closer to the 10k so that it is easier to attend both. Last year, the funds raised at this event helped enormously in raising enough to provide our school with our new and much-loved library. This year, funds will go towards development of our playgrounds so please do support the event.Last week got off to a healthy start when we were visited by Brandon Rouse from the BANES Sports Partnership. Brandon had the whole school (including me!) jumping up and down and getting some great exercise as he introduced us to a brilliant free website. This will allow us to include more physical activity throughout the day, giving children short ‘brain breaks’ as they learn; it also provides some fantastic ideas for calming activities and mindfulness. This fits so well with our value of ‘Happiness’ for children because it facilitates teachers’ thinking about children’s physical and emotional wellbeing throughout each day and each week.

Parish Council Notes Local Groups

Monday 13th February 2017:Hidden Valley Bushcraft - Recent application in relation to woodland for change of use of land to recreational purposes for use as a part time “Woodland Kindergarten” a day nursery/pre school and the provision of therapeutic activities for injured veterans, birthday parties and educational courses. Including the erection of a tent (Tipi) to be erected in the Autumn and winter months and associated outbuildings. An extensive Woodland Management Plan has been prepared by Hidden Valley Bushcraft relation to this site which is 1.8acres in total. Parking has been addressed and agreement has been reached to park at the Memorial Hall Car Park. Much work has been undertaken which Public Rights of Way are happy with. A further concern raised was will this application affect the Pre-school in Stanton Drew. It is thought that this resource would not affect it as it is a completely outdoor Educational Resource which will not suit everyone. The Parish Council agreed to support this planning application.Land Behind Guys Farm, Wick Lane: An application for 9 houses had previously been turned down. A question raised by a Parish Councillor was how this land was included in the Housing Development Boundary. It is in a Conservation Area. A suggestion of building of two larger scale properties on the site was made.Traffic concerns were raised again with the point being made that this site used to be a Tip Site which is when the access onto Wick Lane was created. All traffic will have to pass the Bridge House which

is a concern. It was argued that this access was a historic access and not created for tip purposes.Bulb Fund: Parish Council agreed that they would be happy to pay for bulbs for St Thomas a Becket Churchyard from the Bulb Fund Money donated.Middle Field Compton Dando: Member of the Public attended the meeting to ask for the support of the Parish Council in objecting to an application in relation to Middle Field Charlton Road Queen Charlton in respect of the re-profiling of the land for purposes of agricultural improvement. If this site were to be supported by B&NES potentially there could be scope then for 3 tipping sites very close to one another which could include Knights Folly & Resourceful Earth site. Parish Council agreed to submit their objections to this. A37 Proposals: Proposals made by B&NES are being followed up. Safety of pedestrians remains a concern, bollards are constantly being knocked over. Short Lane: In order to justify the installation of a pedestrian crossing to the Bus Stop the number of pedestrians including children & elderly need to be counted.Vehicle Activated Signs: B&NES will be providing these for Old Road.Pensford Hill Concerns: An email had been received from a resident of Pensford Hill raising concerns again about pedestrian safety on Pensford Hill. The metal bollard outside of their property no 4 Hillside Villas has just been replaced after being knocked

Neighbourhood WatchPensford has recently been the target of a number of crimes.A car was broken into in the lay-by outside Publow Church. It happened on a Sunday afternoon while the occupants were out of sight for only a few minutes. Please make sure you lock your car if you park there and also remove or hide any valuables. Two garden sheds in Hillcrest and the bottom of the High Street have been broken into and items stolen. A car has been damaged in Station Approach. This is a second incident in Station Approach over the last few months.Garden sheds are often vulnerable and easy for thieves to target. There are ways,

however, to make them less attractive – including shed alarms, removing valuables if possible or chaining them securely. The Avon and Somerset Police website www.avonandsomerset.police.uk has some very helpful suggestions. Also be on the look-out for strangers or people acting suspiciously. If they are in a car, make a note of the registration and description of the person and phone the Police on 101.If you witness an incident happening or you feel threatened, phone 999.
