Message from Administration Aloha CKMS Ohana:

With a little over 7 weeks of school remaining our year together is rapidly

coming to an end! The older we get, the faster time seems to fly! Take a moment

as we enter this last quarter of the 2017/18 school year to take a long look at your

child, do you see the growth he/she has made this year? We see our students

have matured physically, socially and academically. We are proud of their ac-

complishments and look forward to watching them continue to blossom.

This month our newsletter celebrates our CKTV/Media students who re-

cently returned from Nashville, TN and Boston, MA with honors from the Stu-

dent Television Network competition. Mr. Matsunaga’s students continue to gar-

ner many awards for their outstanding work. We are also looking forward to our

Spring Concerts and the opportunity to enjoy and appreciate the growth of our

students in the Music Department led by Ms. Tochiki and Mr. Gonzales. The

wide variety of interest-based electives CKMS students have to explore are part

of what makes the Middle School experience special. For the first time, students

have a choice of which classes to take. They also begin to exercise autonomy

while exploring personal interests and possible career choices. Our teachers and

students are living examples of our May Day theme this year “E Aloha Kekahi I

Kekahi”. (Love one another.) Please join us on Friday, May 4th at 9am to cele-

brate May Day.

Third quarter progress reports have been sent home. Your child must

earn passing grades in his/her four core subjects (English, Math, Social Studies &

Science) to be promoted to the next grade. Please contact your child’s teacher(s)

to discuss any concerns you may have about your child’s academic progress.

Our eighth graders began the second round of the Smarter Balanced As-

sessment (SBA) in Science the week of April 9th. Mathematics and reading will

follow in the coming weeks. The test measures your child’s proficiency on the

Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in Reading and Math and on the Hawaii

Content and Performance Standards (HCPS III) in Science. By working together

we can ensure your child’s test experience is positive and successful. Here are

some ways you can help your child succeed:

· Make sure your child gets a good night’s rest

· Ensure your child eats a healthy breakfast at home or in the cafeteria at school

· Make sure your child arrives at school on time

· Gently encourage your child to do his or her best

As summer nears, we will continue to work with you to support your

child’s successful completion of this school year. Please join us on April 19th for

our monthly Parent Night. We will be sharing the many summer enrichment pro-

grams available for your children.

We care about each and every child, and celebrate their growth as Middle School stu-

dents!

Summer Programs on Thursday, April 19, 2018 in the

Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School

Cafeteria

Meeting from 5:00—6:00pm.

April is Alcohol Awareness Month—Sticker Shock

On Friday, April 27th, from 4:30pm – 9:00pm, Life’s Choices Kaua‘i, Ho’okele Coalition, and volunteer

groups will host a “sticker shock” event. We are looking for youth ages middle school to college to join us on a bus as we visit various stores, from Kapaa to Waimea. A light dinner will be provided. More details to fol-low once we have a confirmed list of attendees.

The Sticker Shock Campaign brings attention to the consequences of underage drinking in a manner that involves youth, customers and business owners. It is an initiative that not only educates the community re-garding underage drinking but also enhances leadership traits and advocacy skills within the youth partici-

pating in the program. It is also a great way for parents to start discussing the negative consequences of underage drinking with their youth.

Over 3,000 stickers displaying the legal consequences of purchasing and providing alcohol to minors we will be placed on boxes of multi-packs of beer, wine and other alcoholic beverages, in an effort to reduce under-age youth access to alcohol.

If you would like to participate, please select 5-10 youth from your agency/program and RSVP by April 11th .

Global Scholar Recognition

Congratulations to Mr. Johnson's Global Scholar students Halea Ventura, Blake Hironaka, Boston Gregory , and Charles

Brown who were recently recognized for their exemplary work in the Challenge collaboration on their digital project A

Future Farm for My City. In the project, they combined different urban farming innovations (hydroponics and vertical

farming) in their design!

Congratulations also go to Emma Burgess, Toyoko Merep, and Tiger-Lily Paresa who were recognized for outstanding

work in the Endeavor collaboration on the A Future Farm for My City project, their group’s hydroponic farm design was

well researched.

Both groups provided interesting and informative descriptions to accompany their designs and their projects will be

shared globally as exemplars in social media and on the Global Scholars website!

Congratulations to all the CKMS students who competed in the Mayor’s

who helped train the students: Mrs. Hreljac, Ms. Finlay and Mr. Smith; to the

special guest coaches: Tracy Morimoto and Renato Desouza. Also, thanks to

Congratulations to the CKTV Media Productions Class which recently returned from

California where they attended the 2017 Student Television Network National Convention

held in Anaheim.

In addition to the convention, the students visited the Country

recorded their music), the Tennessee Titans Stadium, and they

watched an NHL hockey game between the Nashville Predators and the Winnipeg Jets. They even did a little country line dancing!

Then the class traveled to Boston, Massachusetts and visited Harvard University, Paul Revere's home, the Old North Church, and the

rest of the Freedom Trail. The class even got to see some snow, built snowmen and had more than one snowball fight!

When we came home we also got word that students in our beginning and advanced media classes are finalists in the 2018 Olelo

CKTV Media Victory

National Walkout The Hawaii State Department of Education (HIDOE) addressed the national call for student-led civic engagement

efforts, specifically, school walkouts. National walkout promoted on social media – March 14 at 10 a.m. for 17 minutes to

honor, the 17 lives lost in the recent Florida high school massacre.

Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School students, Administration and the Leadership Team planned the organized

Walkout on March 14th in accordance to the State Superintendent's guidelines: advised schools to consider creating a

designated walkout area and encourage students to use the time to share ideas for improving campus safety, security and

culture. HIDOE supports students’ Constitutional rights to a peaceful assembly and free expression.

What we hope to gain from these experiences are student voices that help to shape how we can better design

schools with safety in mind. I encourage you to speak to your child about their thoughts on this nationwide movement and

if they choose to participate in a walkout activity. Our goal in responding to walkout plans and other forms of peaceful as-

sembly is to support student and staff safety and keep the focus on teaching and learning.
