ON THE COVER: The Arlington Mill Senior Advisory Commit-tee, in conjunction with participants from the Social 60+ Cafe and other dedicated volunteers, are hard at work developing a new community garden space at the Community Center. The plan is to develop a container garden to beautify the otherwise concrete courtyard space on the Plaza Level of Arlington Mill Communi-ty Center. The group has already obtained planters, and are on track to begin planting as a showcase during EarthFest, on April 9. With the initiation of this garden space, new programs will also come to educate seniors on container gardening, and conserva-tion. The committee is looking for interested individuals to assist with the development and/or maintenance of the garden, if you are interested, please call the main center line at 703-228-7369 to get involved!

March was a great month for participants at Arlington Mill. From a production of “The Springfield Boys” which drew over 30 par-ticipants, to a program with BikeArlington called “Learn to Ride” that taught seniors how to ride a bicycle, there have been sever-al unique features to enjoy. In April, Arlington Mill is excited to bring the 2nd Annual “EarthFest” event, which will feature sever-al community partners.

Love Movies? Arlington Mill is looking for a dedicated volun-teer to assist with its vibrant Movies & Critics program. Last month had a crowd of participants for “Darkest Hour” and we are expecting another great show on Thursday, April 26 for “The Greatest Showman” Volunteers would assist in choosing movies, leading critical discussions, and writing a review to submit to this publication. If interested, please call Nick at 703-228-7369.

Arlington Mill Senior Center will soon be offering two new pro-grams starting in January: a new drop-in Open Art Studio and a English Conversation Class for non-native English speakers. If you or someone you know is interested, please call the main cen-ter line to claim your spot, as space is limited.

We are so excited to welcome a new Line Dancing class to its new permanent time frame of Thursday Afternoons, 1-2pm. Line Dancing is a popular recreational activity among the 55+. It is easy for beginners, lots of fun and no partner is needed. Suzie Pratt and Judi Garth will welcome and instruct, and there is no fee associated. We will see you out on the dance floor!

Movies and CriticsThursday, April 26, 1-3:30pm

Ever wanted to be a movie critic? Now you can. Arlington Mill is now offering Movies & Critics, an interactive movie experience. Come just to enjoy the movie, or take notes during the film for a critical discussion afterwards.

The National Association of Alzhei-mer’s projections are that by 2025 and 2050 over 7.1 and 16 million people will have Alzheimer’s disease, respectively in the U. S. Every 60 seconds a person is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, by 2050 every 30 seconds, the number of people in America who will loose their mem-ory is sky-rocketing. Abundant re-search continues to accumulate on the disease’s devastating effects on families, and increasing costs to the country, if we do not reduce its im-pact or find a cure. Family Caregiv-ers spend more than $5,000 a year caring for a relative with Alzheimer’s or dementia. In 2018, more than 700,000 people in the U.S. will die of Alzheimer’s. There are more than 15million unpaid caregivers in the U.S. caring for a loved one with Alz-heimer’s or dementia. In 2017, the total payments for health care, long term care, and hospice services are estimated to be $259 billion for peo-ple with Alzheimer’s or other types of dementia. Among people 70, and above, 61% will die before they reach 80 compared to 30% of those with-out Alzheimer’s.

Among Hispanics, it is predict-ed that there will be more than 1.3 million by 2050, and in the latest “2017 Alzheimer’s World Statistic” it shows that we will become the eth-nic group most affected world-wide by Alzheimer’s disease. Certain fac-tors attributable to this are diabetes type 2, cardiovascular disease, mis-diagnoses, socio-economic factors, and the rapid growth of our elderly population. We need to educate our communities, especially those that are struggling on a daily basis with Alzheimer’s.

“Awareness is the only solution.”

Fuerza Contra Alzheimer’s (FCA), a 501 (c) (3) organization that was formed in Arlington, Virginia to address concerns and needs of the Hispanic population regarding the impact of Alzheimer’s in our com-munity and across the nation.

With an Alzheimer’s risk rate one and a half times higher than Cauca-sians, there are currently more than 200,000 Hispanics in the U.S. with

Alzheimer’s. By 2050, there will be an estimated 1.3 million, an increase of over 60%. We will become theethnic group most affected by thisdisease by then.

Utilizing music, theater and art, Fuerza Contra Alzheimer’s hopes to engage the Hispanic community in ways that celebrate what it means to be Latino. Doing so will help us dis-seminate awareness of Alzheimer’s disease within our communities and will help us break barriers of stigmas associated to Alzheimer’s in the His-panic community. The organization’s efforts will embrace culture and fam-ily life to meaningfully connect with Hispanic families that are affected by this horrifying disease.

Carmen Pastor leads Fuerza contra Alzheimer’s workshops on the 3rd Wednesday of every month from 7 to 8pm at Arlington Mill Senior Center. The workshop is offered in both English and Spanish, and all 55+ participants are welcome. For more information or to register, please call the Senior Center line at 703-228-7369.
