Chapter Director’s Spiel Hey all, we’re all getting a little (or maybe a LOT???) stir crazy sticking close to home due to the
coronavirus, but we all need to do all we can to be safe. We miss going to chapter activities,
rallies, etc., and seeing our friends, but as the saying goes, “it is what it is”. We hope you
all are coping as well as possible with the safety restrictions necessary to protect us all.
Speaking of no chapter activities, our April chapter gathering, currently scheduled for
Tuesday, April 14th, is cancelled. To enable us to at least pass on any pertinent
information, as well as, most importantly, interact with our fellow members, I am
working on an alternative for our gathering. This alternative is called a “Zoom Call”.
This is a method using your computer/tablet/smartphone/IPhone to log into a “meeting” and we can all see each
other and talk with each other. You need to enable the speaker and the microphone on whichever device you
decide to use. Further below are detailed instructions on what each of you will need to do to “join” the meeting.
GWRRA has been using Zoom calls for quite some time to allow members to “get together” to discuss subjects,
etc., without the cost of setting up a central site for the meeting, and everyone traveling there, etc. I have heard
that there are a couple of chapters that have done this already, and I am confident that we will be able to get it to
work for us. Using the process is free to us, the only limitation is a total of 40 minutes per call, but I think we
can easily accomplish our gathering objectives within that timeframe. Simple explanation, slightly before our
normally scheduled date/time for our monthly gathering, I will send out an email to all the chapter members, with
a link, meeting ID, password, etc., that just prior to the gathering time - Tuesday, April 14th, 7pm, you will need
to reopen that email, click the link and when prompted for the meeting ID and password, enter the information
from the email. You may be directed to download the Zoom Meeting App or program before it loads you in. If
you have any questions, please feel free to contact me, and I hope this will give us a viable option to getting
together to socialize and talk about chapter/rides/ “stuff”.
For the immediate future, any of our calendar “scheduled” rides that are long, like would require gas stops,
meal stops, etc., until informed otherwise, will be cancelled. Short rides that we can do without needing to stop,
that were just nice rides to see the scenery, etc., we will still try to do, when possible, with the added protections
of “Social Distancing” and gloves/hand sanitizer, and I will send out appropriate information in advance. On the
calendar at the end of this newsletter, several chapter activities have “TBD”, this is “To Be Determined”, where
we will make individual decisions on each activity as it gets closer, as to whether we will have it or not, and send
out information accordingly.
We will keep a close watch on the guidelines we receive from the CDC/WHO, and the Federal/State/Local
governments, and use that to determine what we are going to do, and I will send out email with updates as needed.
Please be safe and we look forward to getting together, in person, once this coronavirus pandemic is over.
If you have any questions, concerns, suggestions, etc., please feel free to contact me, and we hope to see you
at a chapter function soon. Take care and ride safe. Brian & Loretta Richards, TN-M Chapter Directors
Assistant Chapter Director Let’s all be ready to have fun with our chapter friends as we look toward a new riding season.
Don’t forget, weather changes quickly this time of year, so if you go on a ride, be prepared
with the right clothes, for whatever weather you might encounter.
If you’re planning on going for a ride, make sure you, your gear, and especially your ride,
are all at their peak performance level and ready to get out there and have fun. And make sure
to be wearing the proper gear for safety and the expected conditions.
Ride Safe! James Whitener, TN-M Assistant Chapter Director

Chapter M “Out Having FUN!”
Mar 28, Chapter Ride on the Foothills Parkway by Ken Gray
On Saturday, March 28 some chapter members met at the Walmart in Lenoir City to go on a chapter ride.
Since we are practicing social distancing right now and most restaurants have closed their dining rooms, we
decided to meet at 12:30 pm so everyone could eat lunch at home before going on the ride. We started with 10
people and 8 motorcycles. The weather was absolutely perfect for a ride and the scenery was awesome. The
Redbuds are in bloom and the hint of Honeysuckle is in the air. Brian and Loretta had to head home before the
ride started because Loretta was experiencing some pain in her recently broken bone. So, on we went with 8
April 2020, Page 6 of 14 Gold Wing Road Riders Association, TN-M
people and 7 motorcycles through Lenoir City and highway 95 towards Greenback. We turned onto Axley Chapel
road and then took East Coast Tellico Parkway to where it intersects with Highway 72. We took highway 72 to
Punkin Center and then highway 129 to Tallassee and Chilhowee dam. Then we turned onto the Foothills
Parkway behind a group of about 10 motorcycles. Honestly, I think we saw more motorcycles than cars on this
ride. We were riding at or slightly above the speed limit to get that adrenalin flowing as we carved through some
nice curves. When we crossed under highway 321 in Walland, two of our chapter members decided to head on
home from there. We stopped at a scenic overlook to regroup and have a quick snack. Our group was now down
to 6 people and 5 motorcycles. On we went to the end of the Foothills Parkway in Wears Valley. We turned
around and headed back down the Foothills Parkway toward highway 129. When we crossed under highway 321
in Walland for second time, three more chapter members decided to go home from there. The remaining three
members and two motorcycles continued on the Foothills Parkway to highway 129. We rode on highway 129
past Chilhowee dam and through Tallassee. We came upon a group of motorcycles stopped on the shoulder and
noticed a big skid mark in the middle of the road and the smell of burnt rubber. Some riders were arguing with a
car driver about suddenly stopping in the middle of the road. I don't think there was a crash, but there were some
hot tempers about a near miss. When we got to the intersection with highway 411, two more members decided
to head home from there. So me and my motorcycle took highways 335 and 321 back to Lenoir City. I had
estimated the ride to be about 125 miles, but it turned out to be 142 miles. For me, driveway to driveway, it was
178 miles. I enjoyed leading the ride and getting to spend time with our chapter members, from 6 feet away.
Overall, it was a good ride. I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did.
