17But let your hand be on the man of your right hand,

the son of man whom you have made strong for yourself! 19

Restore us, O Lord God of hosts! Let your face shine, that we may be saved! (Psalm 80:17-19)

Even with all of the Covid-19 Social Isolation mandates and reports of sickness and death, we see the bigger picture. We see circumstances through theological eyes. We see the importance of the 3

rd, 4

th, and 5

th Commandments.

The 3

rd Commandment calls us to hold sacred the Word of God, which includes what we do in

worship. The 4

th Commandment calls us to respect those in authority, including our civic leaders.

The 5th

Commandment calls us care for our neighbor’s physical well-being. We also know that the Lord is in control, that He loves us in Christ, that He calls us to repentance, and that He calls us to trust in Him. Until we know more, like everyone, we are in somewhat of a holding pattern. When we are able to resume meeting together face-to-face, we will be able to schedule activities and events (like Confirmation). Until that time, please take advantage of our online Worship Services. I found the following item on the synod’s web site and I found it helpful. (In Times of Pestilence)

The Lord once sent a pestilence on Israel, but David, the Lord’s anointed, bore the guilt of sin and offered the sacrifice that “[stayed] the hand” of the Lord’s avenging angel (2 Samuel 24). So much more has Christ, our Savior, borne the wrath of God against our sin and offered Himself as the atoning sacrifice that spares us. “With his wounds we are healed” (Is. 53:5), so we boldly beseech the Lord’s mercy upon us for Christ’s sake. “Death [reigns]” over all of Adam’s children in this world because of sin, yet “through our Lord Jesus Christ” comes the “gift of righteousness” that brings “eternal life” (Romans 5). We, the church, implore God’s mercy in repentance and faith for the sake of Christ, whose hand alone can heal every disease (Luke 4), and in whom is salvation, life and resurrection from the dead.

It is an honor to serve as your pastor.

“Sharing Jesus Christ’s love with those around us.”

THE LUTHERAN CHURCH—MISSOURI SYNOD LCMS STEWARDSHIP MINISTRY

NEWSLETTER ARTICLE APRIL 2020

On the topic of stewardship, one of the most common questions a person might ask is not whether a Christian should give to their church. Everyone knows this. Of course, Christians should give to their church. The most common question: “How much should I give?” But what they really mean is this: “Should Christians give a tithe of their income to their local congregation?” So, let’s look at why you should or should not tithe. Following are some reasons often offered for why Christians shouldn’t give a tithe to their church. Some say you shouldn’t tithe because it isn’t expressly commanded in the New Testament. Lacking that command, there is no “Thus saith the Lord” and no “should” for giving a tithe to your congregation. Others say that Christians give to their congregation in ways much broader than money. They give of their time and their talents, and these, together with treasures (money), add up to more than a tithe. Still others say they give of their treasures to other things besides their congregation, and they want to support those things alongside their church. And there are those who think Christians shouldn’t tithe because of fear. If they tithe, they are afraid their gift will be misused, and they are afraid they won’t have enough to get the things they use, want, or need. Following are some reasons for why Christians should give a tithe to their church. Even though the New Testament doesn’t specifically command Christians to give a tithe, the Old Testament people were commanded to tithe and did. On top of this, St. Paul often describes the giving Christians are to do in similar terms as a tithe: a regular and generous proportion of the first fruits of their income (1 Cor. 6:1–2; 2 Cor. 8:7–23; 2 Cor. 9:2–7). But here’s another way to think about it. What was the point of the tithe in the Old Testament? Where did it go? The reason for the Old Testament tithe was to support the full ministry of the Levites. They were not given any land because they had no time to farm; their full-time job was the ministry. What does it say in the New Testament? “The Lord has commanded that those who preach the Gospel should make their living from the Gospel” (1 Cor. 9:14). This is the verse that Luther put in the Small Catechism’s Table of Duties to cover what Christians owe to the support of the ministry. It seems clear from both the Old and the New Testaments that the tithe is the goal of Christians in their giving. But what if we’re not there yet? How should we handle this? What are we to do? Let’s answer this by asking a different question about something entirely different. What would you say to your adult children who only attended church quarterly or once a month? There, is after all, no passage in the New Testament that requires Christians to go to church weekly. Hebrews 10:25 is the closest we have, and it states simply for Christians to not neglect gathering together. Even though there is no passage that commands Christians to gather weekly, that is the implicit expectation throughout the Old and New Testaments. It is the goal.

So, what would you say to that son or daughter? I’d expect that conversation would be something like this: “I’m glad you’re still going to church. It is a wonderful blessing to hear God’s promises of forgiveness, life, and salvation, and to receive His gifts in the Word and the Sacraments. But you can do better, and it will only be a blessing to you. There is a better way, and I’d really like you to try to attain it.” This same conversation is how we should approach the topic of the tithe. It’s not specifically commanded in the New Testament, but it sure seems like the implicit expectation of both the Old and New Testaments. So, the church is ecstatic that you’re giving when you’re giving in all these ways – time, talents, and treasures.

Cancer Companions

Our Cancer Companions support group will not be meeting until further notice. However, we are still here to support those with cancer and their caregivers. Our

lives may be disrupted and feel uncertain, but God’s love for each of us REMAINS the same. He is the one who brings us hope and comfort. If you know of someone with cancer or a caregiver, we can always mail them a “Seeing God in Your Cancer Journey” book. We can bring them the same support and hope by going through the book by phone.

Flint Hills Lutherans for Life

We are scheduled to meet and elect officers at our April 19th meeting (Manhattan). We are working

on a contingency plan in case we cannot meet. Our scheduled speaker is Susanne Renberg of Re-late 360, giving a presentation for parents of any age child on relationships in our everyday lives, including technology. We want to thank you for your support, whether it was donations for the Giving Tree that went to Life Choice Ministries, stuffing animals and tying blankets that were given to Life Choice Ministries and Katie’s Way, monetary donations or attending Rev. Michael Salemink’s (Executive Director, Lutherans For Life) presentation. If you missed Rev. Salemink’s presentation, here is a sample: “And they also bear His image. Life issues are not contests or competitions. They are not simply personal prerogatives or political controversies. They are not merely difficult conversations or dif-ferences of opinion. Life issues are people. They are special, precious, priceless to the same Heavenly Father. He creates, redeems, and calls them as His own treasures forever too. They are gifts to us, no matter what they permit or promote or participate in. Our goal is not to be right. Our motivation is not to change their mind or shut them up. Our mission is not to enact certain legisla-tion, elect particular officials, overturn Roe v. Wade, or even end abortion. We certainly hope and pray all these things happen. We support and collaborate and celebrate when they do. Our pur-pose and privilege is to proclaim and perform the grace of God in Christ for the broken one right in front of us. But they are apprehensive. So we approach sensitively, gently, compassionately. Myth: Scripture stays silent about abortion. Maintain separation of church and state. Keep politics out of the pulpit. Truth: The same Lord Jesus Christ exercises authority over civic affairs and spiritual ones. By both government and Gospel He brings about the survival and salvation of humankind, and He invites His people to have a hand in these activities. In fact, the whole Bible is about how His love, not anyone else’s own age, appearance, or abilities, gives sanctity and significance to human life. Spe-cific passages apply personhood directly to children and emphasize their great value, including unborn ones. The Word of God explicitly prohibits killing children, even one’s own.”

News about the pandemic of coronavirus has caused great concern for our families,

church and community. But there are things we all can do to help minimize the spread

and affect this virus may have in our futures. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC)

has the latest and most accurate information. The website cdc.gov/

coronavirus/2019-ncov encourages us to make a plan of action for ourselves and

family to keep us safe. Here are just a few of the listed guidelines:

Consider members of the household that may be at greater risk. These would be

older adults with chronic illness and others who may have compromised immune

systems.

Create an emergency contact list including family, friends, neighbors, carpool driv-

ers, healthcare providers, teachers, employers, the local public health department,

and other community resources.

Choose a room in your house that can be used to separate sick household mem-

bers from others.

Wash your hands frequently

Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

Stay home when you are sick.

Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces Be prepared if your

child’s school or childcare facility is temporarily dismissed or for potential changes

at your workplace.

National Autism Awareness Month

The Autism Society of Ameri-ca, the nation’s oldest lead-ing grassroots autism organi-

zation, is proud to celebrate National Autism Awareness Month in April 2020 with the

its new “Celebrate Differ-ences” campaign. Designed to build a better awareness

of the signs, symptoms, and realities of autism. The prev-

alence of autism in the U.S.

has risen from 1 in 125 chil-dren in 2010 to 1 in 59 children in 2020 (CDC, 2020).

Autism, or autism spectrum

disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions char-acterized by challenges with

social skills, repetitive behav-iors, speech and nonverbal

communication. We know that

there is not one autism but many

subtypes, most influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Signs

of autism usually appear by age 2-3. Some associated with developmental delays.
