Promise to Protect—Pledge to Heal April– Abuse Prevention Month (Continued)

-Through safe environment training in Catholic church parishes and schools, approximately 4.5 million children have been educated on how to identify and report abuse. -Healing and ongoing support continues to be provided to more than 1,500 victims/survivors of abuse and members of their families, with similar outreach efforts also being extended to 250 newly identified victims/survivors. -25 new allegations of sexual abuse of minors were re-ported by Church officials to law enforcement; two were substantiated, 11 were unsubstantiated, and 8 were still under investigation. Of the remaining 4 allegations report-ed to law enforcement, additional action on behalf of Church officials included two allegation referrals to the religious order for investigation, one referral to another diocese and one investigation which was held up as the result of an order of confidentiality from the bankruptcy court. The full 2016-2017 report, as well as an archive of past annual reports, is also available through www.usccb.org.

Centennial News Bishop Provost Ordained On April 23, 2007 another native son would be ordained for the Episcopacy. Msgr. Glen John Provost, a native of Lafayette, was serving as Pastor of Our Lady of Fatima, when he was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI to serve as third Bishop of the Diocese of Lake Charles. Bishop Provost was ordained by Archbishop Hughes of New Orleans. His Co-Consecrators were Bishop Jarrell and Bishop Speyrer, who served as the first Bishop of Lake Charles. Bishop Jarrell and Bishop Speyrer are both native sons to the Diocese, from Opelousas and Leon-ville respectively. Prayer Service and Dedication Ceremony— These have been 100 years of blessing for all of us who have had the privilege to be the face of God to the people of Acadiana. As we celebrate, however, it is also im-portant to recognize that there have been times when those who have been called to ministry in order that the Lord’s forgiveness, healing and peace may be ex-perienced by all, have been the cause of much pain and suffering with our community. In order that through the joy of our celebration, those who been hurt by the Church’s ministers may not be forgotten, Bishop J. Douglas Deshotel and the Catholic Diocese of Lafa-yette wish to recognize, as part of our Century of Love, those among us who deserve our continued prayers, support and love as they heal from the wounds of abuse at the hands of those, who, by virtue of orders, were called to be ministers of the Church. To this end, a prayer service for all victims of abuse in any form, Bishop Deshotel invites the people of the Diocese of Lafayette to join him in a Eucharistic Prayer Service and a dedication of a monument that will serve as re-minder to all of our constant need to keep in prayer all those who have been hurt by the Church’s ministers. The Prayer Service and Dedication Ceremony will take place at 6 pm on Friday, April 27, 2018 in front of Immaculata Chapel, adjacent to the Diocese of Lafa-yette Central Office, 1408 Carmel Drive in Lafayette. All are invited to this prayerful event. Second Collection Next Weekend The second collection next weekend will be for Catho-lic Home Missions. Right now, over 40 percent of dio-ceses in the United States are considered home mission territory because they are unable to fund the essential pastoral work needed in their communities. Your sup-port of this appeal helps ease the struggle of these dio-ceses. Please prayerfully consider how you can support this appeal. More information can be found at www.usccb.org/home-missions. Liturgical Roles for April

From the Pastor’s Desk

Last week, I wrote here of Pope Francis’ new message, ‘Rejoice and Be Glad’, on the call to holiness. I wanted to share some small part of that — you can find a link to the entire message at stpat.org. He wrote:

“19. A Christian cannot think of his or her mission on earth without seeing it as a path of holiness, for “this is the will of God, your sanctification” (1 Thess 4:3). Each saint is a mission, planned by the Father to reflect and em-body, at a specific moment in history, a certain aspect of the Gospel.

“20. That mission has its fullest meaning in Christ, and can only be understood through him. At its core, holi-ness is experiencing, in union with Christ, the mysteries of his life. It consists in uniting ourselves to the Lord’s death and resurrection in a unique and personal way, constantly dying and rising anew with him. But it can also entail re-producing in our own lives various aspects of Jesus’ earthly life: his hidden life, his life in community, his closeness to the outcast, his poverty and other ways in which he showed his self-sacrificing love. The contemplation of these mys-teries, as Saint Ignatius of Loyola pointed out, leads us to incarnate them in our choices and attitudes. Because “everything in Jesus’ life was a sign of his mystery”, “Christ’s whole life is a revelation of the Father”, “Christ’s whole life is a mystery of redemption”, “Christ’s whole life is a mystery of recapitulation”. “Christ enables us to live in him all that he himself lived, and he lives it in us”.

“21. The Father’s plan is Christ, and ourselves in him. In the end, it is Christ who loves in us, for “holiness is nothing other than charity lived to the full”. As a result, “the measure of our holiness stems from the stature that Christ achieves in us, to the extent that, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we model our whole life on his”. Every saint is a message which the Holy Spirit takes from the riches of Jesus Christ and gives to his people.

“22. To recognize the word that the Lord wishes to speak to us through one of his saints, we do not need to get caught up in details, for there we might also encounter mistakes and failures. Not everything a saint says is com-pletely faithful to the Gospel; not everything he or she does is authentic or perfect. What we need to contemplate is the totality of their life, their entire journey of growth in holiness, the reflection of Jesus Christ that emerges when we grasp their overall meaning as a person.

“23. This is a powerful summons to all of us. You too need to see the entirety of your life as a mission. Try to do so by listening to God in prayer and recognizing the signs that he gives you. Always ask the Spirit what Jesus ex-pects from you at every moment of your life and in every decision you must make. . . .”
