For those who aren't Catholic, it may not be appar-ent why one should embrace the Catholic Faith. In this inspiring presentation, bestselling author Patrick Madrid gives compelling biblical and historical rea-sons for why he embraces the faith as a lifelong Catholic. He shares valuable insights into the beauty of the Catholic Church and its claim to contain the fullness of the deposit of faith given by Christ. I’m impressed! A relevant message for our times. A must for all who seek to defend our Church. Cindy - Norfolk, VA This talk is not only inspiring, it is compelling. I am moved to share the truth of our Catholic Faith. Julie - Tampa Bay, FL I am a deacon in the Catholic Church and I am very interested in Catholic apologetics as a means to pass on the One True Faith. I am always looking for inspiration in this area. Although I'll probably never have the intellectual knowledge of Patrick, I love the Church and the Lord Jesus. Patrick is very plain-spoken, sure of himself, and convincing. Tom - Evansville, IN

Saint Vincent de Paul

Blessed Frederic Ozanam is a more contemporary example of someone who, like the early Christians, looked beyond himself to the needs of the people around him. When thou-sands died in a cholera epidemic in Paris in 1832, many more were left destitute. Ozanam, a young university stu-dent, was moved at the hopeless state of families who had lost the support of their breadwinners. Then he was stung by another student’s remark: “In former times Christianity worked wonders, but what is it doing for mankind now? And you, who pride yourself on your Catholicity, what are you doing for the poor?” In response, Ozanam gathered a few friends and began to do whatever he could to relieve the suffering he saw in the slums of the city. Eventually, a new organization, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, grew from Ozanam’s work and spread. Today, through this society, volunteers serve mil-lions of disadvantaged people around the globe. They provide home visits, job training, housing assistance, food pantries, and medicine for the elderly. They pray with peo-ple, care for their needs, and show the love of Christ in countless concrete ways. Most of us don’t live in as close-knit a community as the first Christians did, where everything was held in common. Nor would many of us be able to sell our property, donate it to our local parish, and still be able to care for ourselves and our families. Still, God asks us to bear witness to his Son through acts of generosity and loving service that are in line with our circumstances. So ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to see the needs around you. Sharing even a little of your resources, even a little of your time and attention, can make a big difference! “Lord, show me how I can share the blessings you have given me.” -Psalm 93:1-2,5 John 3:7-15 Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its found-er, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul. Would you like to learn more or are you in need of assistance? If so, call: 630-718-2127.

Mark’s Gospel Corner

For more information about Mark’s Gospel Corner, email [email protected]

Today’s Gospel is taken from John 10:11-18, where Jesus describes the model shepherd. When we think of the Good Shepherd we are reminded of Psalm 23: “The Lord is my shep- herd, there is nothing I shall want… He leads me to cool waters and refreshing pastures. He revives my soul.” When we think of an evil shepherd, we recall the Prophet Ezekiel: “Woe to the shepherds of Israel who have been pasturing themselves! Should shepherds, rather, not pasture sheep?” Twice in this Gospel, John 10:11 and 10:14, Jesus announces that He is the Good Shepherd. In John 10:11 the Greek adjective καλος, which literally means beautiful, is more accurately translated in this context as model or perfect. Jesus is the model or perfect shepherd because He will lay down his life for His sheep. 1 This fact goes beyond any imagery in the Old Testament. Jesus is no hired hand that stands idle or lees when the sheep are threatened. St. Paul builds on this theme: “Though rarely someone might choose to die for a righteous man, God shows His love for us precisely in that whilewewerestillsinners, Christ died for us” (Rom 5:7-8). In Mark 14:27, Jesus is described as the shepherd who leaves the other 99 to seek out the one that is lost. John wants to make the point that Jesus, as shepherd, is willing to lose His life for the sake of His sheep. The imagery of hired hands and wolves are then introduced into the parable. In contrast to Christ, the Phar-isees and other Jewish leaders have betrayed the lock entrusted to them – some have even carried off and destroyed the lock, pasturing not the sheep, but themselves. In Matthew 10:16, Jesus tells His disciples, “I send you out like sheep in the midst of wolves.” St. Paul uses the same imagery in Acts 20:28-29 when he instructs the bishops and presbyters to guard the lock entrusted to them, shielding them from savage wolves – those who will rise up within the community attempting to lead them astray. In John 10:14 Jesus again says, “I am the Good Shepherd.” Here Jesus speaks to the sheep with tenderness and concern. He knows each by name. His sheep recognize Him and they follow Him. There is an intimacy between Jesus and His disciples. His sheep do not follow strangers but rather trust in the Good Shepherd even when the path seems uncertain. Throughout the Old Testament, God the Father is depicted as a shep-herd tenderly leading His lock. In describing Jesus as the Good Shepherd, the Evangelist implies that the Father and Jesus are one, thereby af irming the divinity of Christ. As we celebrate the Fourth Sunday of Easter, we are called to re lect on the love that Jesus, the Good Shep-herd, has for each of us. He did not lee when His life was threatened but freely laid it down for us. He is not aloof but invites us into intimacy with Him and the Father, conversing as close friends do. We need not be afraid to hear His voice for He speaks with tenderness and compassion, protecting us from those who wish to lead us astray.
