Born Don Vliet, Captain Beefheart was one of modern music's true innovators. The owner of a remarkablefour-and-a-half-octave vocal range, he employed idiosyncratic rhythms, absurdist lyrics, and an unholy alliance of freejazz, Delta blues, latter-day classical music, and rock & roll to create a singular body of work virtually unrivaled in itsdaring and fluid creativity. While he never came even remotely close to mainstream success, Beefheart's impact wasincalculable, and his fingerprints were all over punk, new wave, and post-rock. Don Vliet was born January 15, 1941 inGlendale, CA (he changed his name to Van Vliet in the early '60s). At the age of four, his artwork brought him to theattention of Portuguese sculptor Augustinio Rodriguez, and Vliet was declared a child prodigy. In 1954, he was offereda scholarship to study in Europe; his parents declined the proposal, however, and the family instead moved to theMojave Desert, where the teen was befriended by a young Frank Zappa. In time Vliet taught himself saxophone and harmonica, and joined a pair of local R&B groups, the Omens and theBlackouts. After a semester at college, he and Zappa moved to Cucamonga, CA, where they planned to shoot a film,Captain Beefheart Meets the Grunt People. As the project remained in limbo, Zappa finally moved to Los Angeles,where he founded the Mothers of Invention; Van Vliet later returned to the Mojave area, adopted the Beefheart nameand formed the first lineup of his backing group the Magic Bandwith guitarists Alex St. Clair and Doug Moon, bassistJerry Handley, and drummer Paul Blakely in 1964. In their original incarnation, the Magic Band were a blues-rock outfitwho became staples of the teen dance circuit; they quickly signed to A&M Records, where the success of the single"Diddy Wah Diddy" earned them the opportunity to record a full-length album. Comprised of Van Vlietcompositions like"Frying Pan," "Electricity," and "Zig Zag Wanderer," label president Jerry Moss rejected the completed record as "toonegative," and a crushed Beefheartwent into seclusion. After replacing Moon and Blakely with guitarist AntennaeJimmy Semens (born Jeff Cotton) and drummer John "Drumbo" French, the group (fleshed out by guitarist Ry Cooder)recut the songs in 1967 as Safe as Milk. After producer Bob Krasnow radically remixed 1968's hallucinatory StrictlyPersonal without Beefheart's approval, he again retired. At the same time, however, Zappa formed his own label,Straight Records, and he soon approached Van Vliet with the promise of complete creative control. A deal was struck, and after writing 28 songs in a nine-hour frenzy, Beefheartformed the definitive lineup of the MagicBand -- made up ofSemens, Drumbo, guitarist Zoot Horn Rollo (born Bill Harkleroad), bassist Rockette Morton (MarkBoston), and bass clarinetist the Mascara Snake (Victor Fleming) -- to record the seminal 1969 double album TroutMask Replica. Aqualung was the first Jethro Tull album remixed by Steven Wilson and was originally re-released as aDescription:40th Anniversary package in 2011. This more accessible release features the remixes as Steven delivered them and aflat transfer of the EP Life Is A Long Song.Three additional tracks - Just Trying To Be, Wind Up (early version) &Wond’ring Aloud, Again (full Morgan version) are now available as 5.1 mixes. Two of the tracks Life Is A Long Song &Up The Pool have never previously been available on CD in this form. Yehudi Menuhin was born in New York, but spent much of his life in Europe and died in 1999 in Berlin, where he wasdue to conduct a concert. It was in Berlin 70 years earlier, in 1929 that Albert Einstein – himself an accomplishedviolinist – heard the young Menuhin play and exclaimed: “Now I know there is a God in heaven!” Menuhin isacknowledged as one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century, an interpreter of phenomenal understanding andspirituality. He commanded a huge and varied repertoire , including numerous works dedicated to him bycontemporary composers.

The Menuhin Century commemorates the 100th anniversary of his birth on 22 April 1916.Theserecordings depict Menuhin as a maker of musical history and place him in the context of momentous historical events.The Historic Recordings includes Menuhin's collaborations with such figures as Sir Edward Elgar, WilhelmFurtwängler, Sir John Barbirolli, Charles Munch and David Oistrakh, and features recordings made in Moscow in 1945and in Budapest during the Hungarian Uprising of 1956. CD1: The collection opens with the landmark 1932 recordingof the Elgar Violin Concerto that the 16-year-old violinist made at the new Abbey Road studios, with the composerhimself conducting. This is complemented by a previously unpublished recording of 'La Capricieuse'. CDs 2-3:Menuhin lays his claim to immortality with his pioneering recording of the complete Bach Sonatas and Partitas(1934-1936). CDs 4-6: The young violinist’s encounter with his mentor George Enescu, one of the major musicalfigures of the time. These 3 CDs consist of their complete recordings together. CD7: War and peace. Menuhinsnatched the recently rediscovered Schumann concerto – which he described as the “missing link of the violinliterature” – from under the Nazis’ noses. Then, in October 1944, just two months after the Liberation of Paris, here-opened the Paris Opéra with Charles Munch, playing the Marseillaise and an extract from the Mendelssohnconcerto, a work that had been forbidden during the Occupation. The entire radio broadcast of this emotion-ladenconcert is to be heard on this disc. CD8: Menuhin in Moscow. Following an historic performance of Bach’s DoubleConcerto with another violin genius and close friend, David Oistrakh, comes an extraordinary recital in where he playsNigun from Bloch’s Baal Shem – the piece was censored by Soviet radio.
