Sunday of Divine Mercy

“To have faith means to trust, to have trust in God.”

Today we celebrate the Second Sunday of Easter, the eight day of the octave of Easter, and Divine Mercy Sunday. On this Divine Mercy Sunday, we hear the familiar story, from the Gospel of John, about Thomas the Apostle, who would not believe in the Resurrection of Jesus, until he saw Jesus himself and touched the wounds of Jesus with his own fingers. As a result, Christians have often referred to this story and this Apostle as Doubting Thomas. However, in art, this story from John’s Gospel about Doubting Thomas is often called the Incredulity of St. Thomas. For example, the image that we see this week, painted by Daniel Seiter is entitled The Incredulity of St. Thomas (1700) as well. What does the word incredulity mean? Incredulity comes from the word incredulous, which means not inclined or indisposed to believe; skeptical. If we look at the word incredulous a bit more closely, we will discover that this word itself is composed of three Latin root parts: “in,” “credere,” and “ulus.” First, let us look at the prefix “in.” In Latin, “in” is a prefix that corresponds to the

English un-. It gives a word a negative, opposite meaning. Second, the word “credere” is Latin for “to believe.” Third, the suffix “ulus” is an ending put at the end of a word in Latin that denotes a quality or tendency. What is important about this suffix is that it indicates a constant predisposition and common inclination, as opposed to just a singular and uncommon occurrence. Thus, when we put all these parts together, we can say that the word incredulous means to “unbelief constantly” or the “tendency to not believe.” This is the word used to describe the Apostle Thomas. Not only did he not believe once, but it seems that Thomas had the tendency to disbelieve. St. Thomas had a constant predisposition to unbelief.

The incredulity of St. Thomas represents the incredulity of all of us. It is easy, perhaps, for us to pick on St. Thomas and think that only St. Thomas was unbelieving, while the other Apostles

believed, but that would not be true either. When reading the stories of Jesus’ Resurrection appearances, we see many times that the Apostles did not understand either at first, or that they thought the Risen Lord was just an apparition. St. Thomas does not have the tendency to believe because faith is something that we tend to lose as we grow older. Children have faith. Children have faith in their parents, families, teachers, etc. However, as we get older, we tend to lose faith. Why? Because we our faith, or belief, has been broken by others. Jesus’ appearance to St. Thomas following the Resurrection is to awaken his belief and faith in Him once again. The Greek word for faith is “pistis,” which means “trust.” Every time we see the word faith in the Bible, or use the word faith in the Church or our own life, just substitute the word faith with the word trust. To have faith means to have trust, trust in God. What is the message that Jesus gave to St. Faustina? What prayer did St. Faustina pass on to the world from the Risen Lord? On the night of February 22, 1931, while she was alone in her cell, Jesus appeared to St. Faustina as the "King of Divine Mercy" wearing a white garment with red and pale rays emanating from His heart. In her diary she wrote that Jesus told her: “Paint an image according to the pattern you see, with the signature: "Jesus, I trust in You.” I desire that this image be venerated, first in your chapel, and then throughout the world. I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not

perish.” We are all like St. Thomas. Belief, or trust, does not come easily for us. Our tendency is to unbelief rather than to belief. That is why the prayer of Divine Mercy is so very important and necessary for every person, from St. Thomas, to you, and me. Belief, or trust, in God is not strong in the world we live in today. We need to pray and repeat this prayer every day of our life, and many times throughout the day: “Jesus, I trust in you.” May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Good Help, help us with her maternal care and St. Joseph pray for us.

Hoy celebramos el segundo domingo de Pascua, el octavo día de la octava de Pascua y el Domingo de la Divi-na Misericordia. En este Domingo de la Divina Misericordia oímos la conocida historia del Evangelio de Juan sobre Tomás el Apóstol, que no creería en la Resurrección de Jesús, hasta que vio al mismo Jesús y tocó las heridas de Jesús con sus propios dedos. Como resultado, los cristianos han referido a menudo a esta historia y este Apóstol como Tomás el Dudoso. Sin embargo, en el arte, esta historia del Evangelio de Juan acerca del Tomás el Dudoso se llama a menudo la Incredulidad de Santo Tomás. Por ejemplo, la imagen que vemos esta semana, pintada por Daniel Seiter también se titula La Incredulidad de Santo Tomás (1700). ¿Qué significa la palabra incredulidad? Así, cuando junta-mos todas estas partes, pode-mos decir que la palabra incré-dulo significa "incredulidad constantemente" o la "tendencia a no creer". Esta es la palabra usada para describir al Apóstol Tomás. No sólo no creyó una vez, sino que parece que Tomás tuvo la tendencia a no creer. Santo Tomás tenía una constan-te predisposición a la increduli-dad. La incredulidad de Santo Tomás representa la increduli-dad de todos nosotros. Es fácil, quizás, que tomemos a Santo Tomás y pensemos que sólo Santo Tomás era incrédulo, mientras que los otros Apósto-les creían, pero tampoco sería cierto. Al leer las historias de las apariciones de la Resurrec-ción de Jesús, vemos muchas veces que los Apóstoles no en-tendieron al principio, o que pensaron que el Señor Resucita-

do era sólo una aparición. Santo Tomás no tiene la tendencia a creer porque la fe es algo que tendemos a perder a medida que envejecemos. Los niños tienen fe. Los niños tienen fe en sus padres, familias, maestros, etc. Sin embargo, a medida que envejecemos, tendemos a perder la fe. ¿Por qué? Porque nuestra fe, o creen-cia, ha sido roto por otros. La aparición de Jesús a Santo Tomás después de la Resurrección es despertar su fe y creer en Él una vez más. La palabra griega para la fe es "pistis", que significa "confianza". Cada vez que vemos la palabra fe en la Biblia, o usamos la palabra fe en la Iglesia o nuestra propia vida, simplemente substituya la palabra fe por la palabra confianza. Tener fe significa tener confianza, confiar en Dios. ¿Cuál es el mensaje que Jesús le dio a Santa Faustina? ¿Qué oración pasó Santa Faustina al mundo del Señor Resucitado? En la noche del 22 de febrero de 1931, mientras ella estaba sola en su celda, Jesús se le apareció a Santa Faustina como el "Rey de la Divina Misericordia", vestido en blanca con rayos rojos y pálidos que emanaban de su corazón. En su diario escribió que Jesús le dijo: "Pinta una imagen según el modelo que ves, con la firma:" Jesús, yo confío en ti ". Deseo que esta imagen sea venerada, primero en tu capilla, y luego en todo el mundo. Yo prometo que el alma que venerará esta imagen no perecerá. Todos somos como Santo Tomás. Creencia, o confianza, no vienen fácilmente para nosotros. Nuestra tendencia es la incredulidad en lugar de la creencia. Por eso la

oración de la Divina Misericordia es tan importante y necesaria para cada persona, desde Santo Tomás, para ti y para mí. Creencia o confianza en Dios no es fuerte en el mundo en que vivimos hoy. Necesitamos orar y repetir esta oración todos los días de nuestra vida, y muchas veces a lo largo del día: "Jesús, yo confío en ti." Que la Santísima Virgen María, Madre de la Buena Ayuda, nos ayu-de con su cuidado materno y José ora por nosotros. ¡Vivat Jesús! ¡Viva Jesús!

Przypada dzisiaj II Niedziela Wielkanocy, ostatni dzień oktawy wielkanocnej. Ta niedziela znana jest też jako Niedziela Miłosierdzia Bożego. Słuchamy dzisiaj znanego fragmentu z Ewangelii św. Jana dotyczącego apostoła Tomasza. Tomasz nie uwierzył w Zmartwychwstanie Jezusa, dopóki nie ujrzał Go na własne oczy i nie dotknął Jego ran. Z tego względu, chrześcijanie często nazywają św. Tomasza „Niewiernym”. W ramach naszych rozważań na ten temat, wybrałem obraz pędzla Daniela Seitera, zatytułowany: „Niewiara świętego Tomasza” (1700 rok). Angielski tytuł tego dzieła („The Incredulity of St. Thomas”) pochodzi od łacińskiego źródłosłowu, złożonego z trzech części - „in”, „credere” i „ulus”. Spójrzmy najpierw na przedrostek „in”. W łacinie, ten przedrostek oznacza przeciwieństwo i nadaje następującemu po nim słowu zabarwienie negatywne. Czasownik „credere” znaczy z kolei „wierzyć”. Występujący na końcu

słowa przyrostek „ulus” wskazuje zaś na jakość lub tendencję. Należy tu podkreślić, że ten przyrostek wskazuje na coś występującego stale, a nie tylko raz na jakiś czas. Złożywszy te trzy części razem, dowiadujemy się, iż chodzi o „stałą niewiarę”. Tak właśnie można określić św. Tomasza. Brak wiary nie był czymś jednorazowym w jego przypadku, to była stała cecha jego charakteru. Zachowanie św. Tomasza ukazuje częstą postawę każdego z nas. Łatwo nam potępiać Tomasza i tylko jemu przypinać „łatkę” niewierzącego, stawiając innych apostołów za wzór wiary. To jednak nie do końca jest tak. Kiedy czytamy o tym, jak Jezus ukazywał się uczniom po Zmartwychwstaniu, widzimy, że oni nie od razu uwierzyli, albo myśleli, że Pan jest zjawą. Święty Tomasz wiary nie posiada, gdyż jest to coś, co zazwyczaj tracimy z wiekiem. Dzieci mają wiarę – wiarę w

rodziców, rodzinę, nauczycieli, itd. Dlaczego jednak, im stajemy się starsi, tym coraz bardziej tę wiarę tracimy? Dlatego, że inni ją niszczą. Zmartwychwstały Jezus objawia się św. Tomaszowi właśnie po to, aby ponownie rozbudzić jego wiarę. Greckie słowo dla wiary jest "pistis", co znaczy "ufność". Za każdym razem, kiedy widzimy słowo wiara w Biblii, albo używamy słowa wiary w Kościele lub własnym życiu, po prostu mozna zamienić słowo wiara z słowem ufność albo zaufanie. Wiara oznacza zaufanie, zaufanie Bogu. Jaka jest przesłania, które Jezus dał Świętej Faustynie? Jaka modlitwa św. Faustynę przekazała światu od Zmartwychwstałego Pana? W nocy z 22 lutego 1931 r., kiedy była w celi, Jezus ukazał się św. Faustynie jako "Król Bożego Miłosierdzia", ubranym w białą szatę z czerwonym i białym promieniami, które emanuje od Jego Serca. W swoim pamiętniku napisała, że Jezus powiedział jej: "maluj obraz według wzoru, który widzisz, z podpisem: "Jezus, ufam Tobie." Pragnę, aby ten obraz był czczony, najpierw w swojej kaplicy, a potem na całym świecie. Obiecuję, że dusza, która będzie czcić ten wizerunek, nie zginie." Wszyscy jesteśmy tacy jak św. Tomasz. Wiara, czyli ufność, nie przychodzi łatwo dla nas. Naszą tendencję raczej jest do niewiary, a nie do wiary. Dlaczego

modlitwa Miłosierdzia Bożego jest tak bardzo ważna i konieczna dla każdej osoby, od św. Tomasza, dla ciebie i dla mnie. Wiara, czyli ufność, w Bogu nie jest silna na świecie w którym żyjemy dzisiaj. Potrzebujemy powtarzać tę modlitwę każdego dnia naszego życia, i wiele razy przez cały dzień: "Jezus, ufam Tobie." Niech Najświętsza Maryja Panna, Matka Dobrej Pomocy, pomoże nam z macierzyńską opieką i niech Sw. Jozef modli się za nami.

LADIES OF THE ROSARY The Ladies of the Rosary are looking for a specific decoration for their installation dinner and are asking wine aficionados to look in their basements, attics and garages to find the old fashioned wine bottles with raffia on the bottom. They would like to use them as candle holders on the tables at their Italian-themed event. The Mass, which remembers more than 630 students and graduates of the school who have passed onto eternal life, will be celebrated by longtime school chaplain, Fr. Norm Trela. It will fulfill the Sunday obligation. There will be a wreath-laying ceremony at the deceased alumni moment on the school grounds, weather permitting. A small reception will follow. LADIES OF THE ROSARY NEWS BEADS ... Monthly Mass The Ladies of the Rosary gather on the first Sunday of the month at the 7:30 a.m. Mass to attend Mass as a group. All ladies of the parish are invited to attend and celebrate with the group. General Meeting The Ladies of the Rosary host their next monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, in the school hall, 5641 S. 73rd Ave. The Ladies of the Rosary will install their officers, followed by a pizza party. All are welcome. SALAD LUNCHEON IS TODAY, SUNDAY, APRIL 23 The annual Salad Luncheon will be held today Sunday, April 23rd in the school hall.
