Welcome to the Alberni Valleyhome of everywhere. Your trip to our region will impact you forever. No doubt you’ve passed through the world renowned Cathedral Grove and now you’re well within the magical forest that we live in and enjoy on an everyday basis.

Within our forest you’ll fi nd anything you might need, be it high fashion clothing or footwear, hardware and building materials, locally

produced foods, lovely artistic creations developed from wood, from the sea, or from within our own backyards. You’ll also fi nd umpteen locations to drop your canoe, kayak or powerboat and in fact you can fi sh our saltwater Inlet for world-class salmon, or perhaps you might prefer to visit one of our nearby lakes where you can enjoy waterskiing, wakeboarding, trout fi shing or simply jump in the clear waters for a refreshing dip. Or, if you’re inclined for more adventurous activity, we have hundreds of kilometres of trails suitable for walking, hiking, running, ATVing, mountain biking and more. And don’t forget to drop by our waterfront located along the Somass River and Alberni Inlet where you’ll no doubt witness awe-inspiring kiteboarding, windsurfi ng or, if further down the river, you’ll enjoy watching our First Nations peoples as they work the waters in their traditional territories. A word to the wise... always have your camera ready! We are in wildlife country where we enjoy sharing our shorelines and back-country. Should you desire to stay longer or learn more about Port Alberni and our vast Valley, then please feel free to drop by our Visitor’s Centre located at the entrance to town. We’d be all too happy to introduce you to more of what you’re about to enjoy.

HistoryThe Alberni Valley has a rich history that is worth exploring.

It is named after Don Pedro Alberni, an army captain with the Spanish troops garrisoned on the West Coast of Vancouver Island in 1790.

Through the years, Port Alberni has survived on a strong forest industry, and in recent years it has diversifi ed to build on its many strengths, including a deep-sea port, a strong First Nations culture and huge recreation opportunities.

Settlers fi rst arrived in the 1880s, and initially the community was made up of two towns, Alberni and Port Alberni. After incorporating in 1912 and 1913, respectively the two towns eventually amalgamated in 1967. Many believe a devastating tsunami in 1964 showed the two communities they were stronger when they worked together.

Make sure to explore Port Alberni’s history at the Alberni Valley Museum 250-723-2181, www.alberniheritage.com, take a steam train to McLean Mill National Historic Site or explore the Maritime Discovery Centre.

AttractionsThe Alberni Valley has more wonders than you could discover in a lifetime.

Cathedral Grove can be found en route to the Valley. This lush rainforest is home to some of the largest old-growth trees on Vancouver Island. Offi cially named MacMillan Provincial Park, the Grove offers a great pit stop and a chance to stretch your legs as you explore the trails that take you through mighty hemlocks, Douglas fi rs and cedars that will take your breath away.

The Alberni Pacifi c Railway and McLean Mill National Historic Site offers you a chance to see how the forest industry started in Port Alberni. Head down to the historic train station by the Harbour Quay and jump on board a 1929 Baldwin logging locomotive. It will take you out to McLean Mill, where you will see the only steam-powered sawmill in Canada operating.

The Log Train Trail is ready to be explored. Originally built as part of the Bainbridge Mill rail-logging operation, after the mill closed in 1927, the railway was abandoned. Now it offers hikers more than 25 kilometres of remarkable trails to explore.

The Whaler’s Canoe at Victoria Quay refl ects the history of the Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations communities in the Valley, Hupacasath and Tseshaht.

UPTOWN STREET MARKET FAIRSaturday, July 25th

9 to 5 pm

Port Alberni offers different shopping experiences with a number of different areas, each sharing their own unique shops.

As you enter the community, you will fi rst see the Visitor’s Centre, which is not only home to local information, but a gift shop full of hand-crafted and fair-trade items.

Continuing down Highway 4, you will discover the Pacifi c Rim Shopping Centre with stores that offer almost anything you need – clothing, odds and ends, hardware, pet supplies, groceries, gifts, furniture and much, much more.

Head further down Johnston Road, and you will discover the downtown core, originally the centre of Alberni before amalgamation. Made up of lots of unique small and medium-sized stores, you will enjoy wandering along, checking out the interesting fi nds that are available, including surfboards, hair salons, vintage items, antiques, a local butcher shop and many other interesting shops. Don’t forget to head over to Victoria Quay to see what it has to offer.

Head south on Gertrude Street, and you will enter the uptown core, once the heart of Port Alberni before the two towns became one city. It is home to interesting shops and also the Rotary Arts District. You can check out the little stores including a sports store, clothing and thrift stores, a pet shop, art galleries, a barbershop and much more.

The Harbour Quay offers a beautiful setting for shopping. Right on the water,

The Mars Water Bombers have called Sproat Lake home since the early 1960s. Now owned by Coulson Group of Companies, the giant Second World War aircrafts have been converted into fi refi ghting machines. Each one holds 27 tonnes of water, ready to attack a forest fi re. Recent changes in forest fi refi ghting in the province has put the future of these legendary fl ying boats in question, but Valley residents hope the Ladies of the Lake will remain for years to come. ArtMuch of Port Alberni’s arts are focused in the Uptown in what is now known as the Rotary Arts District. This area on Third Avenue and up Argyle Street displays banners in the summer that are created by local artists and is home to a few public art displays. Don’t forget to check out the many painted doors on area businesses.

Housed in a 1914 heritage home on Eighth Avenue, the Rollin Arts Centre puts on many different exhibits throughout the year in their fi ne arts gallery. They also have a gift shop, classroom and gardens that are perfect for celebrations and are home to their summer-long Tea on the Terrace music performances (www.portalberniarts.com). Live music is a plenty at the Rainbow Room, Blue Marlin Inn and Char’s Landing throughout the year.

NatureThe Alberni Valley is a haven for nature and outdoor enthusiasts.

It offers a wide variety of walking and hiking trails with plenty of scenery and beautiful surroundings to explore.

The trail system is extensive (go to www.portalberni.ca and www.acrd.bc.ca for more details) with something for people of every fi tness level. The Inlet Trail is one of Port Alberni’s newest trails, but you can also explore the Log Train Trail, Rogers Creek Nature Trail, the Greenmax Angler’s Trail, the Alberni Inlet Trail, Hole in the Wall, the CPNR Trail and Kitsuksis Dike walking path, the lookout behind Coombs Country Candy, or many other trails. Stop by the Visitor Information Centre to pick up a book on some of the best local trails.

Local cyclists have been busy in the woods around the Alberni Valley, developing an endless variety of rides for cyclists of all levels. Some local trail rides can be found on the Port Alberni Cycling Club website at www.pacyclers.com or www.albernivalleyriders.com. If you prefer to explore by motorized vehicle there are lots of places to take your ATV or motorcycles, as well.

You no longer have to leave the city to enjoy the water. The newly-developed Canal Beach offers people access to the Alberni Inlet for swimming or any other water sport they may love, such as kiteboarding, kayaking or stand-up paddling. Just head down Third Avenue and follow the signs to the beach.

The J.V. Clive Bird Sanctuary is the most diverse estuary on the Pacifi c Coast. It is located along the Alberni Inlet, and offers all the sights and sounds bird lovers dream of witnessing.

Every year, thousands of salmon swim up area streams, and Stamp Falls Provincial Park offers a great opportunity to go for a hike and see salmon jumping the falls and using the man-made fi sh ladder. Paper Mill Dam also offers great salmon viewing as well.

The Alberni Valley is the gateway to Della Falls, the tallest falls in Canada, Cathedral Grove, the West Coast and the Broken Group of Islands - all famous for sea adventures and wildlife.
