MEMBERSHIP ORIENTATION – Sunday, April 29, 2018

Those interested in becoming an official member of this

congregation and participating more fully in its ministries are

invited to join others in conversation about the witness of this

congregation and The United Methodist Church.

The conversation will take place on Sunday, April 29, 2018,

beginning at 12:15 p.m. in Room 151 of the Education Building where lunch will

be served. Our time together will include a tour of the campus.

It would be helpful to contact the church office and indicate that you will

be attending this session.

CONFIRMATION STUDY

A several-week exploration of faith and the church is coming to a

conclusion with the

invitation to confirm

their faith and become a

“professing member” of

this congregation of

The United Methodist

Church. Five young

people have learned

Hebrew and Greek as

well as spending time

with the Bible and

worship and undertaking

new prayer forms such as

labyrinth. During this

season, they (along with others) have had the opportunity to see performances of

both Godspell and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, both of

which were recently presented at the Glendale Centre

Theatre. The class has also undertaken activities of

service as well as undertaking a rolling “tour” of the

campus, finding new places to undertake study and

activity.

On May 20th, the Day of Pentecost, the young

people will have an opportunity to witness a baptism

and then to take up these vows for themselves.

Book Fair Opportunity

North Valley Caring Services (NVCS) is holding a book

fair this summer for children in Kindergarten through High

School. They are in need of new books for the event and have

asked if our congregation would donate Dr Seuss, Harry Potter

and Graphic Novels. Here are two ways you can participate:

1. Purchase Dr Seuss, Harry Potter and/or Graphic Novel books. Add a note of encouragement (e.g. Enjoy

this book and the wonderful world of reading!) in the front cover(s) for the lucky recipient if you would

like. Deliver the books to the church office no later than April 29th. Please clearly mark your donations by

attaching a slip of paper that says "NVCS Book Fair".

2. Make a monetary donation. If you write a check, please make it out to GFUMC and put "NVCS Book

Fair" in the memo line. Donations can be given to Debbie Hinckley, Nancy Kachline or to the receptionist

in the office.

The more books we can provide, the more successful the book fair will be and more children will be

exposed to the wonderful world of reading.

If you have any questions reach out to Nancy Kachline or Debbie Hinckley.

Blood Drive - Sunday, July 8

Your blood is needed. Please Give.

Organ Recital

Sze Wing Ho, an organ student of Dr. Ladd Thomas, is

going to present an organ recital in our Sanctuary on Saturday,

April 28 at 2pm. The program includes music written by Bach,

Mendelssohn, Franck, Messiaen, Peeters, and Gerald Near. The

event is free and open to the public. Sze Wing is from Hong Kong

and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Sacred

Music at the USC Thornton School of Music. Prior to coming to

USC, she studied Church Music and Music Theory at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary at Fort

Worth, TX. She currently serves as music staff at Chinese Bible Missions Church at Alhambra, CA.

FAITH AND FILM

Friday, May 4, 2018, 9:30 a.m.

Our monthly Faith and Film offering for May is “Three Billboards

Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” A mother personally challenges the local

authorities to solve her daughter's murder when they fail to catch the

culprit. The film begins at 9:30 a.m. on April 6 and is followed by a potluck

luncheon and discussion.

A subsequent showing and discussion will occur on Friday, May 18,

2018 at 7:00 p.m. with a light supper being served.

MAY’S FELLOWSHIP LUNCHEON

On May 6th, we can join in fellowship around the luncheon tables as we

enjoy good food and good company for the afternoon meal. Our luncheon will be

held, as usual, in Carlson Fellowship Center, beginning at 12:15 p.m. on that Sunday

afternoon.

We will be celebrating the many acts of service provided by the many who

volunteer in the witness and ministries of this church. Come and give thanks.

An introductory guitar theory class for

those interested in rhythm or lead guitar

began April 8th and will continue for a

total of ten sessions. The course covers

the foundations of the major scale, chord formation,

chord progressions, CAGED system, pentatonic scales,

and miscellaneous topics requested by students. The

objective of the class is to describe, form, play, and

use scales, chords, and other functions to play guitar

competently. The course meets Sundays at 1:30 pm in

the Lounge, Rm 230. Cost: Free, Contact the church

office for more information.

As of Thursday morning, April 19, 2018, pledges and contributions to the Capital

Fund Campaign total $216,867. We have received pledges and gifts from 105 “giving

units” which may represent a single person, a couple, or a family. We are all invited to

support this campaign to fund the renovation of the campus including an elevator, handicap restroom, ramps, an

open plaza at Broadway and Kenwood, and a scattering garden and columbarium.

Please remember that the Foundation is eager to match giving on a 2 to 1 basis; that is for every $2.00 given,

the Foundation will add another $1.00 to the total. With this matching grant added, we now have a campaign

total of $325,301.
