Executive Bonus Plans: The Basics and More

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This presentation will focus first on what an executive bonus plan is, who can benefit from it and what value (advantages and disadvantages) does it hold for the employer and the employee . Furthermore, the tax consequences to both the employee and employer will be discussed . Finally, how to implement such a plan will be focused on for a time . The other part of the discussion will focus on the actual plan variations: the basic plan, the restrictive plans and finally, the leveraged plan . A great deal of detail will be spent on explaining why one would use which type of plan and what rights the employer and the employee have under each plan . Finally, if the leveraged plan is used, a discussion will evolve highlighting ways to use life insurance in the plan and the growth (if any) of certain life policies to help get out of the leverage plan with minimal tax problems .

MODERATOR: Al Jackson, CFP®, ChFC, CLU, CASL™, MSFS, MSM has over 40 years experience in financial planning, and has had extensive experience in all phases of designing, analyzing, and implementing financial strategies . As Director of Financial Planning, he is responsible for overseeing the overall operations of Allegiant Wealth Management’s planning activities and the quality of plans and advice . Al also acts as Financial Planning Specialist on specific cases, where he specializes in simplifying and presenting creative financial strategies to clients in a media that helps them to understand their alternatives and make important decisions regarding their futures .

President’s Message

The Power of TeamworkWhat really goes on behind the scenes at NAIFA-Dallas? It’s a question I get asked now and again. The answer I give is this: there is a lot more that goes into it besides getting ready for a luncheon . At the writing of this President’s Message (that is late to Karen’s desk again), here are a few of the things on our plate .

1 . Final preparations are being made for Race for CE at Lone Star Park which is only six weeks away (see pages 10-11) .

2 . The Texas Convention is in four months .

3 . The National Convention is in six months .

4 . Karen is just now returning from medical leave .

5 . The 2012-13 official ballot for NAIFA-Dallas Board of Directors is on page 9 . Please return your ballots by Friday, April 20th .

6 . Programs are being planned for 2013 and well beyond .

7 . A site has been chosen for the 2012 Golf Tournament. Plan to join us on Friday, October 12th at The Trails of Frisco .

8 . A membership retention drive has just begun .

9 . Agency presentations are being planned to gain membership and increase the awareness of the job being done .

10 . Political involvement efforts are being made to approach candidates to increase the exposure of NAIFA .

11 . Board Member Orientation Meetings are being planned .

12 . A slate of candidates is being prepared for Hall of Fame and Advisor of the Year .

13 . Efforts are being made to increase our PAC contributions from NAIFA-Dallas members .

14 . We are getting acclimated in our new office on the North Dallas Tollway .

15 . Dates for 2012-13 luncheons are being negotiated with Prestonwood Country Club .

16 . Board members are setting up CE classes and designation classes .

17 . Committees are meeting to redefine what Advisor of the Year and Hall of Fame should mean .

These are just things that are on the top of my mind . There are some other things that are being planned that I will be reminded of when this goes out, but the thing we all need to remember is that they are being done by about 15 people, 15 of the most dedicated volunteers I have ever been associated with – volunteers who all have very, very demanding paying jobs . They have jobs to attend to, but they have never disappointed you or the thousands of non-dues paying members that they also serve .

We have compensated them like we have our Board members and officers for the last 99 years . With thank yous and hugs . That is NAIFA- Dallas’ only currency . What an incredible job they do .

APIC Influence Training Meeting ReportSteve Harris, CLU, ChFC – Membership Director

I was honored to be invited to attend an APIC Influence Training Meeting in Washington, DC March 19th and 20th. Texas was well represented by:

Jason B. Talley, NAIFA Texas Government Relations Chair, NAIFA-San AntonioSteve Harris, NAIFA-DallasSteve Aycock, NAIFA-AustinMonte Ferguson, NAIFA-Fort WorthColin Eddington, NAIFA-HoustonWesley McNight, NAIFA-Piney WoodsEdward Portillo, NAIFA-El PasoAlan Kifer, NAIFA-Houston

Before going to Capitol Hill on Tuesday to meet with Texas Congressmen and Senators, the 50 NAIFA members from around the country in attendance were updated Monday afternoon on the challenges facing our industry and the political environment . Magenta Ishak, Michael Steadman, Diane Boyle, Matthew Laptew, Jill Hoffman, Laura DeGolier and Lillian Vogl all provided up-to-date information .

It is always amazing to me what the NAIFA staff is able to keep up with when you think of all the legislation that they have to peruse and the 535 elected members of Congress they have to keep tabs on . If every member of NAIFA and every non-member licensed agent could see how hard our NAIFA staff in DC works to protect this industry, they would have no problem paying the dues and think what a bargain they were getting!

Pat Raffaniello, who is one of NAIFA’s in-town attorneys, provided a fascinating insight into the political situation during a 30-minute presentation followed by a question and answer session .

On Tuesday morning just prior to our send-off to The Hill, we were treated to a 2-hour presentation by Van Mueller . Van’s presentation focused on the financial issues facing this country . He reminded us very simply and elegantly how our products are well-positioned to enable our clients to weather any future financial storms . As he said, life insurance companies were built just for that purpose. We were all energized to go to The Hill and tell the story of how our products are the solutions to many of the problems our clients face .

PAGE 14 THE FINANCIAL ADVISOR NEWS OF NAIFA-DALLAS 4/12

I woke up early today, excited over all I get to do before the clock strikes midnight. I have responsibilities to fulfill today.

I am important. My job is to choose what kind of day I am going to have.

Today I can complain because the weather is rainy or... I can be thankful that the grass is getting watered for free.

Today I can feel sad that I don't have more money or... I can be glad that my finances encourage me to plan my purchases wisely and guide me away from waste.

Today I can grumble about my health or... I can rejoice that I’m alive.

Today I can lament over all that my parents didn’t give me when I was growing up or... I can feel grateful that they allowed me to be born.

Today I can cry because roses have thorns or... I can celebrate that thorns have roses.

Today I can mourn my lack of friends or... I can excitedly embark upon a quest to discover new relationships.

Today I can whine because I have to go to work or... I can shout for joy because I have a job to do.

Today I can complain because I have to go to school or... eagerly open my mind and fill it with rich new tidbits of knowledge.

Today I can murmur dejectedly because I have to do housework or... I can feel honored because the Lord has provided shelter for my mind, body and soul.

Today stretches ahead of me, waiting to be shaped. And here I am, the sculptor who gets to do the shaping.

What today will be like is up to me. I get to choose what kind of day I will have!

Have a great day... unless you have other plans.
