The proposed distracted driving law, Bill16, has the Al-berta government trying to weed through what is consid-ered a distraction.

Talking and texting on cell phones, reading, writing and grooming are just a few of the distractions being discussed.

Strathmore RCMP Staff Sgt. Larry Marzinzik said he is “not really for it or against it,” and, though the RCMP doesn’t have input in what is being dis-cussed, “any rule can be a good one as long as it is used appro-priately to keep everyone in a safe zone.”

The Alberta government is proposing a ban on all hand held devices while driving, but the use of hands-free phones will be allowed. Drivers who do not follow the guidelines set by Bill 16, face a fine of $172, and no loss of demerit points.

Bill 16 also complements the current driving without due care and attention law, a seri-ous offence with fines of $402 and a loss of six demerits, by allowing police and RCMP more flexibility when it comes to dealing with distracted driv-ers.

“We are sending a strong safety message to all Albertans: When you’re in your vehicle, your focus must be on driving,”

said Luke Ouellette, minister of transportation, in a press re-lease.

Staff Sgt. Marzinzik recently heard on the radio that drink-ing coffee while driving is be-ing discussed as a distraction.

“It’s common sense that someone putting on make-up will be distracted, but does cof-fee lead to distracted drivers? I don’t know,” said Marzinzik.

“Almost anything could be considered a distraction, I think that’s what they are discussing now.”

Distracted and careless driv-ing is not a new issue for the RCMP. It’s something they have been dealing with for decades. Accidents have been caused by drivers changing the song on their stereo, or reaching to pick up a bottle their child has dropped. All it takes is look-ing away for just a second and there could potentially be an accident.

“We deal with careless and distracted drivers as best we can,” said Marzinzik.

Marzinzik can’t remember a particular accident involving a cell phone here in town but said “distractions came in long before cell phones.”

The issue is to be debated further in the legislature this fall, allowing both public and traffic safety stakeholders a chance to look over and com-ment on Bill 16.

The various municipalities within Wheatland gathered at the counties council meeting April 20 to discuss the status of recreation in the area - now and in the future.

The county, along with representa-tives from the Town of Strathmore and the villages of Hussar, Standard and Rockyford, discussed the possibility of creating a board to plan and dispense money to the various recreational fa-cilities in the area.

Each municipality planned to review their recreational needs with their in-dividual councils, before scheduling a future meeting as a larger group.

“Everything was going a lot smooth-er when the province was handing out money (for recreation), but when they cut back, you don’t want to close the doors,” said Glenn Koester, Wheatland Councilor for Div. 6. “You’ve got to look at other sources of funding … the costs are getting huge.”

Strathmore Mayor George Lattery presented the county with current sta-tistics of the operational costs for some of the town’s recreational facilities, and the numbers were staggering. Where those numbers were combined with

the rest of the town’s recreational facili-ties and the various villages facilities, the operational costs are in the millions of dollars per year.

“I believe the towns and villages will kick into the pot the same amount as the county does – on a proportional ba-sis,” said Koester. “That way everyone is doing the same thing – that’s the way I’d like to see it. We haven’t had that talk with council yet; I don’t know how council will go.

“If everybody’s paying the same, I don’t think that anybody has any grounds to complain about it.”County suPPorts rosebud HistoriCal soCiety

A presentation was made by the Rosebud Historical Society to seek sup-port from the county to accept chari-table donations on their behalf.

The Canada Revenue Agency did not approve the society’s account, thus pre-venting them to issue tax-free receipts.

Council approved the notion to write tax receipts for donations over $20.

“People want to donate money for the betterment of the community, (so) it’s our … right to issue tax receipts,” said Koester. “I think if our citizens want to make use of that, it’s up to us to help them out. The (Rosebud) His-torical Society have the only museum

in the county … it is a local initiative. As soon as you give tax receipts, (peo-ple) can give more money.”Water Meter test

Residents in the county who use the regional water system and have dis-putes with their bills have an option to rectify the problem.

The county will offer its residents a chance to test their water meters for a fee. If the meter is broken, the money will be reimbursed.

“They can come to the county and say ‘I think my water meter isn’t right’ and they will put a deposit for the cost of testing it,” said Koester. “If the water meter is not within the two per cent, we keep the deposit to pay the meter man.

“If the meter is defective, then we’ll refund the money.”druMHeller seeks funds

The Town of Drumheller made a pre-sentation to county council seeking a $500,000 sponsorship for their new recreational facility.

The new venue will include a library, cultural centre, meeting rooms, field house (including soccer, lacrosse, run-ning track, change room, bleachers), an ice arena and curling rink.

Construction of the multi-million dol-lar project is slated to start June 1.

Laura-Jeanne Lehr who also goes by L.J, will find out next week if she will continue to the second round of the Next Top Spiritual Author.

The final day to send in votes is May 3. Lehr recently found out there are over 2,800 authors from 16 countries in the competition. The support each author is giving to the other contestants amazes Lehr.

“Everybody is kind of working togeth-er which is unique,” said Lehr.

She said just last week, a few mem-bers sent out an email saying, ‘why don’t we all send an email to friends and fam-ily saying these are my three favourites please vote for them.’

“Everyone is thinking bigger too, even if some people don’t move on, they are saying how can we still work as a group to get noticed by publishers.”

Members of the contest are also col-laborating on creating a blog radio. Only 250 contestants will make it to the next round. The second round is writing a proposal and then the group will be down to 25, at which point they send in the first two chapters. After that, it goes to the final five. People in the top group will be given publishing contracts.

“The nice thing about the way they set up this contest and the reason there are four parts, is because they are the steps you would need, to actually get ready to go to a publisher,” said Lehr.

Every week the organizers of the con-test list who is in the top 100 for that week, and for two out of the three weeks Lehr was in it.

“It’s really exciting to think that edi-tors and publishers are going to be look-ing at my work.”

Hampton Roads Publishing is one of

the few publishing houses that still read through all of the manuscripts sent in.

Lehr writes anywhere from an hour up to five hours a day, and always car-ries a notebook to jot down ideas as they come to her. This is the first year of the competition and it has far surpassed the expectation of everyone involved.

“I didn’t anticipate how it would push me just so much further along. The sup-port has been amazing. It’s really nice to see everyone else working together. It’s just been a really fun experience and re-ally exciting,” said Lehr.

She did not always know she wanted to be a writer, but said looking back through some school writing, she thinks she always had a few books in her, just never knew which form they would take.

Her book is about relationships and making people aware that a healthy re-lationship is individual work. Lehr is a life coach and mediator, and through her work began to notice common patterns and mistakes people are making in their own relationships.

“I was noticing every time I would coach someone in a relationship, they would say, ‘I have never thought of that, or that’s really different.’ I started to think, maybe I am thinking differently than others, and maybe there’s some-thing that I really have to contribute to.”

She said one of the most common mis-takes she has noticed is that people are looking to their partner to fulfill some-thing inside of them.

“If something goes wrong we are re-ally quick to think it’s their fault, or they need to do something to make us feel better, or we need to do something to make them feel better,” said Lehr.

When she started writing the book she was single. She is now in a relationship, and has noticed when she applies some of her theories, things go really well,

and when she doesn’t, then she is mak-ing some of the mistakes she is coaching other people through.

Her sister Leanne Van der Burgt has been very supportive and helpful with marketing ideas. Lehr also plans to set up a webpage but wants to wait until she is sure of the title of her book. Until then, she is still blogging.

Even if a she doesn’t make it in the top five she will still follow the deadlines along with the contest, so she will still be ready to send it off.

“I know the book will definitely be published, I just don’t know when or how”

The Fire Within began as a way to help fire departments raise money for equipment and training while raising awareness in the community.

Every year fire departments around the country are invited to participate with the Fire Within by being featured in a calendar shot by photographer Charles Hope.

This year the Strathmore firefighters association decided to have the calen-dar dedicated to them as a way of cel-ebrating the town’s 100 anniversary.

Firefighters could be seen going door to door, and in front of local stores, in a campaign to sell the calen-dars. The money raised by the event is also being used to fund projects they have going on around town. One of the projects is the monument in front of the fire hall.

“It was a hard sell. I’m not going to say it wasn’t successful, but it was a challenge for the fire fighters to sell the calendars to make money the way they wanted to,” said Mure Furzer, Strathmore fire chief.

The fire within began when Chad

Sartison, a volunteer firefighter in Prid-dis realized fire departments needed a way to raise funds and awareness. The motto of the Fire Within is “To Train, Educate, and Equip.” Many people are unaware they are in volunteer firefight-ers’ care outside of the city. Some of these fire departments don’t have the equipment needed or the volunteers to help protect their community.

“FDIC represents a training oppor-tunity coveted by all fire departments, which often lies well out of the reach of volunteers fire departments’ bud-gets,” said Sartison in a press release.

Alberta has the heaviest presence in the calendars, due to the fact the proj-ect started here and this is where it is most visible. For the past three years the Fire Within have selected volunteer firefighters to join the Fire Department Instructors Conference, FDIC.

This year 11 trips were awarded to the conference, with some depart-ments sending additional members at their own expense. Over 30,000 fire fighters from across North America at-tended the event.

The Strathmore Fire Within calendar will be available for purchase at the Relay for Life for $10.

Religious leaders are tak-ing part in an inter-faith dia-logue Mother’s Day, to help bring a better understanding and show the commonalities between their religions.

Calgary’s Ahmadiyya Mus-lim community is working to-gether with Strathmore Unit-ed Church, St. Michael’s and All Angels Anglican Church to host the event.

“Interfaith conversations are important to build rela-tionships, to recognize one another as human beings, to dispel a few myths and per-haps to build relationships,” said Rev. Paula Ashby.

There will be two religious leaders, one Christian and one Muslim and, they will be speaking about the purpose of life as their religion under-stands it.

Each speaker will be given 15 minutes to speak and it will also be a personal reflec-

tion from each speaker. This will be the first time

for the event in Strathmore and Rev. Jane Rowland will be speaking on behalf of the Christian side.

“What we will each be do-ing is speaking about our own faith, so its more an understanding one another than it is a comparison,” said Rowland.

After each guest speaker is finished there will be a 15 minutes question and answer period.

Afterwords, there will be a fellowship with refresh-ments.

MLA Arno Doerkson and MP Kevin Sorenson have both been invited to attend the event. No response has been given yet from either, Ashby is hoping to receive letters to be read on behalf of the two men.

The Inter Faith dialogue will take place at the Strath-more United Church May 9, and is set to begin at 7 p.m.

Dear EditorDid you know that my rural child generates signif-

icantly more money (about 25% more) from the pro-vincial government for GHSD than a child attending a school in Strathmore, and yet next year my child will not receive the same quality of education that a child in Strathmore will receive? Why? Because, next year GHSD is removing one teacher from his school. That doesn’t seem like much but it is 25% of the teachers. This also means that my child’s school will have no choice but to put three grades in one classroom with one teacher. Apparently it is educa-tionally sound to put my 4 year-old and 7 year-old in the same classroom, with 25 other children (You’re not supposed to have more than 17).

Is it the Provincial Government, who has deemed our school a ‘Small School By Necessity’ and pro-vides additional funding to support it (enough for two teachers)? Is it the Trustees, who govern the division, are mandated to provide a quality basic education to all public children, and claim that they want to educate rural children in rural schools? Or is it the administration, who operates the purse strings and doesn’t value rural schools, that is mak-ing this decision?

As a parent, I too, am now faced with making a decision. Do I wait and hope that they give us another teacher? Do I register my Kindergarten stu-dent in Strathmore, the most convenient school for me to drive to two days a week, and what about my

older child should I drive him too? Would my 9 month-old be able to happily drive

160 km a day two or five times/week? Do I put my kindergarten child in the same classroom as his brother in Grade 2 and with a teacher that is forced to teach three grades at once? Do I keep them where they are and hope that their education isn’t affected too severely?

Will I notice right away or will I not know of the effect until many years down the road when it may be too late? Why do I always have to fight for my child’s right to a basic education? I am not the only parent and my school isn’t the only school this is happening too. My child’s school is in good shape, in fact, one of the best in the division, my child has good teachers, who in my opinion, are the best in the division, the provincial government thinks that my rural child should receive a quality education and has provided additional money for that, so WHY does GHSD believe that my child is not worth it?

Are they doing this so that parents will move their rural children to urban schools and then the closure process is easier for them? Do I jeopardize my children’s future because GHSD refuses to put their money where their mouth is and educate rural students in rural schools? This is my child’s educa-tion, it is happening now.

Kevin SorenSon, M.P., CrowfootParliamentary Report

As your Member of Parlia-ment, every once in a while I am approached by a constitu-ent seeking a formal Pardon from the federal government for a past violation of Canada’s Criminal Code. I have always approached such requests cau-tiously. On the one hand, the person seeking the Pardon may have only one Criminal Code charge under which they were found guilty and paid their pen-alty in full many years ago. On the other hand, sometimes I find that a person has multiple con-victions.

We can all sympathize with a father or mother who, for ex-ample, needs to wipe the slate clean of an incident that hap-pened when they were young, and now - maybe twenty years

later - they want to try and en-ter the United States in order to take their children to Disney Land. Another example is the person who cannot get a certain job because of an age-old crimi-nal record. When is the public’s interest served when it comes to granting Pardons for crimes committed?

The National Parole Board granted Graham James a Pardon in 2007 after he had completed his 3½-year prison sentence for sexually abusing two young men. Anyone can apply for a par-don five years after the offence. Under current law, the applicant must demonstrate that he or she has “been of good conduct” and has not been convicted of other offences. According to media re-ports, in the next few months, Karla Homolka, convicted of manslaughter in the sex-slaying of two young girls will be eligi-ble to apply for a Pardon

I am concerned with protect-ing the sanctity of a clean crimi-nal record. The vast majority of the people I represent have never been arrested, charged, nor found guilty of a criminal offence. As a society, we have a vested interest in paying that kind of behavior the highest re-spect. As well, we must be mind-ful of the ongoing suffering and consequences for victims and their surviving families and friends.

Last Monday, Prime Minister Stephen Harper reaffirmed our Conservative government’s sup-port for victims of crime at the opening of the fifth annual Na-tional Victims of Crime Aware-ness Week symposium. He also announced that he has asked Minister of Public Safety, the Hon. Vic Toews to propose leg-islation that will tighten up Can-ada’s existing Pardon System.

"If you do what you love, you will love what

you do" - Rocky and Ellie have certainly proved that to the community for the past 10 years since opening up

Rocky's Bakery and Deli.

There is no substitute for fresh quality ingredients, taking the time to get it right and the personal service you receive at Rocky’s Bakery.

While the delicious aroma’s of freshly baked doughnuts (TRANS FAT FREE), bread and cinnamon buns will draw you in the doors, Rocky’s Bakery has a whole lot more to offer. And it is not just the friendly smiles and familiar faces behind the counters. Our bakery uses only quality ingredients for all our goods and we do not use any added chemicals to keep them on the shelf longer which is something that quite often happens at a commercial level, said Rocky. I want people to come to our store and know exactly what they are eating…..

Found on the deli shelf is only the highest of quality and freshest meats from Grimm’s Fine Foods that have no MSG added.

“We have a lot of fresh HEALTHY choices here now. It gives the bakery a little bit of a different edge,” says Rocky.

The Blockland Family has a long history in the baking business. When Rocky was young he helped his father in the Blokland Bakery in Stettler. Before he branched out on his own, he spent 20 years in commercial baking.

Rocky’s Bakery is not only known in the community for its catering service or hot lunch programs in the schools, Rocky’s Bakery is also a big advocate for the Children’s Wish Foundation and during Heritage Days hosts a Loonie Toonie Party, where all proceeds are donated to the cause.

Having dedicated 40 years of his life to baking, from larger chain stores to his own bakery for the past ten years, Rocky has no plans on retiring any time soon. The customers that seem to all know his face and can taste his passion for producing fresh and quality food – Thank hin for that.

Rocky’s invites customers to either stop by and take out their lunch or sit down in the intimate setting of their coffee shop and enjoy the pleasant smells throughout the Bakery.

You can also stop at their new location in CRYSTAL RIDGE called “ROCKY & ELLIE’S CAFÉ for the same great food and service.

Special thanks to the businesses and customers who supported our 300 power line workers brought in from around the province to help with restoration efforts.

Our employees want to thank you for your tremendous hospitality, encouraging words and compassion, which helped them to get their job done as quickly and safely as possible. Your calls of understanding and support to our call centre were remarkable.

Thank you respectfully.

stated that the federal govern-ment can give the National Pa-role Board more “direction.” He says, “These things should not just be rubber-stamped. There may have to be more consider-ation given by the board to the particular type of offence, and at

the present time the board is not entitled to differentiate between offences.”

I am very supportive of our government’s effort to make changes to Canada’s Pardon Sys-tem. I thank those of you who have advised me of your desire to review it and propose chang-es that strike a better balance

between punishment and reha-bilitation.

The primary goal of every trained tanning professional should be to teach sunburn prevention to every client. The tanning process actually creates two different forms of natural protection against sunburn. Melanin shields skin cells, protecting each cell from getting too much UV exposure. Extra keratin, (a fibrous protein that provides structure to the top layer of your skin) migrates to the surface of the skin, thickening it, which makes the skin naturally more resistant to sunburn. These two steps combine to create a powerful natural sunscreen that doesn’t wash or wear off adding another level to your sun protection arsenal.

Every year the RCMP reviews and modifies their Annual Performance Ac-tion Plan, APP. Generally the survey goes out to town, county and village councils. This year they asked residents what they see as important and needs to be worked on.

The plan is like a guide to how to use pro-active time. Reactive time is any-thing from dealing with things such as impaired drivers, homicides and bylaw complaints.

“What we tried to do this year with the survey is get it out to the general public, to put down their thoughts and present them so we can contemplate them, while we’re developing our plan for this year,” said Staff Sgt. Larry Mar-zinzik.

The survey stemmed from the need for more public input when it comes to what the RCMP can be doing for its communities.

The surveys went out to a number of different locations, including schools, at the beginning of March and were col-lected at the end of March. 219 forms were returned with 58 per cent of fe-males participating and 42 per cent male. From this, 67 per cent were peo-ple under 18-years-old.

“We got a good response from schools and that was anyone 12 to 17,” said Mar-zinzik.

Strathmore composed 47 per cent of the replies, rural was 37 per cent and only 16 per cent came from unknown areas. The survey listed eight different areas of concern and offered partici-pants a chance to add anything they felt was missing. The questions included ‘what types of crime impact your neigh-bourhood?’ and ‘what activities do you feel your police should focus on?’

The top three priorities that came from the numbers are vandalism, drugs and theft.

“That comes in line with what we have been seeing in some of our past statistics,” said Marzinzik.

“Vandalism and theft have been on a bit of an increase in town and the ru-ral areas, so that may be good that it’s been brought up as a priority and that it falls in line with what our statistics are showing and that maybe we need to try to focus on a few different things to bring those statistics down and raise awareness in the communities.”

The five areas which will be targeted through the new APP will be vandalism, drugs, theft, traffic and client services. Vandalism will be a priority: there will be goals and objectives to try to bring down the incident rates and also to

raise awareness in the communities. Theft in Strathmore and rural commu-

nities is more a crime of opportunity, said Marzinzik.

“I call them midnight shoppers, they come along and don’t necessarily dam-age anything but they try the door and if it’s open, what’s in there they may take”

The third main area the RCMP are planning to focus on is drugs. Last year it was a priority to focus on overall ad-diction and they are still going to do a general targeting of that area, but plan to focus mainly on illicit drugs such as cocaine and marijuana.

“That doesn’t say we neglect any of the other areas, we will still be enforc-ing the open alcohol in vehicles and public intoxication, that type of thing, we’re going to focus our proactive work, where we set up little projects and pro-grams to these three areas.”

Traffic will always be a main priority and there is a monthly plan made for different areas, which targets drivers. Finally, for client services, the RCMP would like to maintain a good relation-ship with the members of the communi-ties they serve.

Marzinzik is hoping to have the sur-vey out earlier next year and have focus groups or town hall meetings to follow up on the results of the survey.

Rosebud school of ARts

It’s been a busy spring for Bragg Creek actor Kendra Hutchinson.

In addition to wrapping up her final year at Rose-bud School of the Arts (RSA), she’s performing in Rosebud Theatre’s hit comedy We Won’t Pay! We Won’t Pay!, and in case that wasn’t enough, she’s also trying her hand at producing.

For her debut in the producer’s seat, Hutchin-son is producing Ten Times Two by David Belke. The story follows Ephraim, a man damned to wander the earth for-ever, as he attempts to make Constance, a mortal woman, fall in love with him. “First and foremost it’s a love story,” Hutchin-son says. “It starts in a fairytale-esque fashion but it changes into some-thing real.”

Hutchinson is also per-forming in the play as Constance, and the chal-lenge of playing the same woman through 10 differ-ent reincarnations is one she’s looking forward to.

“I’m excited for the challenge of playing so many characters,” she says. “They are all very different but they all have Constance at their cores. It’s the different circum-stances that alter her at-

titude.”As for the new ad-

venture of producing, Hutchinson says, “It is a challenging thing for me, as I prefer being told what to do and it’s hard to be the person doing the telling.”

Each student must pro-duce a final project be-fore they graduate from RSA, but the hard work is worth the effort.

As Hutchinson says, “It’s great seeing a show come together.”

Director Mark Lewan-dowski is enjoying the process of bringing this love story to life as well.

“It’s interesting as I don’t really believe in the soul-mate concept. Certainly there’s attrac-tion, but love is a choice,” he says. “This play does make some interesting comments about that, and does support that idea that love is more than just sudden thing. It grows and takes work and depending on the baggage we carry, it may not be possible.”

Ten Times Two by David Belke runs at the Rosebud Studio Stage May 2-3, with perfor-mances at 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. both days. Tickets are $10 and can be booked through Lit-tle Country Blessings or over the phone at (403) 677-2271.

Akokiniskway Art Gal-lery features Alberta Painter

Shades of the Earth is the featured art show on display at the Akokini-skway Art Gallery until May 15. The 20 oil paint-ings from countries such as England, Israel, Africa, Egypt, India, Tibet, Indo-nesia and Peru are the inspiration of Rimbey’s Sandra Peacock, who wanted to create a series of paintings that reflect a variety of the world’s people in their natural environment.

“I have always had a love for art and been fas-cinated by people and their faces, particularly the eyes,” says Peacock, a mother of four. “This show was a significant challenge considering my first priority is rais-ing our four children. What makes it special for me is that it combines the beauty of everyday people from around the world in their natural surroundings. Most of these people would nev-er consider themselves outstanding, but when I look at them, I see the sweet simplicity of man. I have tried to capture their uniqueness as well as God’s splendour in his exquisite creation with the hopes of stirring the hearts of those who see my work.”

Actor finds love on stage

Buried treasuresBlanche Arthur has been volunteering with the Unit-ed Church thrift sale since 1993, “We help each other out and it’s wonderful.” This is the 34th year the Church has held the event. The event is held every April and October and donations are welcome throughout the year. shannon LeClair Photo

The Strathmome Reds faced off against Calgary’s PBF this past weekend. The Reds lost Saturday’s game 5-4. Shannon LeClair Photos

Reds lose two out of threeShannon LeCLairTimes Reporter

The Strathmore Reds faced off against Calgary’s Professional Baseball Force (PBF), Saturday in their first of three weekend games.

It was a close and hard fought game, but the Reds fell 5-4 to PBF.

“The boys did pretty good, just had a few mis-takes base running, that kind of cost us in the end,” said Darwin Armitage.

“We didn’t capitalize on some situational hitting

that we should have done.”Despite the loss of their

first game, Armitage was hoping the boys would shake it off for Sunday’s two games.

“We faced a pretty good pitcher today.”

Sunday they split a dou-ble header, winning the first game of the day 8-7 and losing the second 7-3.

“Everybody really stepped up to the plate there, had some good pitching, some timely hit-ting,” said Armitage.

“We faced one of their

best pitchers, a guy that throws pretty hard. He’s a hard throwing left hander and we actually chased him out of the game so that was a real good sign.”

In the final game, the Reds made a few errors which cost them the game, but they will have a chance to beat Calgary again this weekend.

“Overall it was a pretty good weekend,” said Ar-mitage.

“We are hoping to have another good go at the se-nior team next Saturday.”

WHEATLAND COUNTY GrOWTH MANAGEMENT

STrATEGY QUESTiONNAirE

Wheatland County is facing planning challenges with the increased demand for residential development and

the growing industrial and commercial sectors. This in turn impacts our agricultural base, the

environment and quality of life. County Council recognizes the importance of planning for long term

growth and in response is undertaking the preparation of a Growth Management Strategy (GMS).

The expectations of this study will strategize and lead to directions for change in a manner that respects

local character. This is intended to support sustainable growth, diversify the local economy and

enhance agricultural roots while protecting the environment and creating a more balanced community.

To start this project, we are providing a questionnaire and encourage all residents of Wheatland County

to participate. The questionnaire is available in the Strathmore Standard, on the Wheatland County website

at www.wheatlandcounty.ca and at the Wheatland County Office. Following this, there will be open house sessions to provide County residents further opportunity

to contribute and discuss their vision for Wheatland County’s future.

Rockyford residents aim for healthClaudette laCombeSubmitted

The Rockyford Fitness Club wants to make it easy for local residents to keep fit.

The Club plans a two-pronged approach to the challenge. First, create a club that can financially sustain use of the gym area of the community center and have members join each other in fitness activities.

To get this part rolling, the club set up spring fitness classes with professional in-structor Tristen Desmet.

“If we can pay the rent on the gym, we can use it year round for anything related to fitness,” says Club President Claudette Lacombe. “With that in place, we have fitness equipment waiting to go on the stage and provide Rocky-ford residents a place for in-dividual workouts.”

She emphasizes that the club cannot move equipment onto the stage until member-ship reaches a point where they can rent the space for at least one year.

“The last thing we want to do is move heavy, complicat-

ed equipment into the space and then find we don’t have the membership to maintain use of the space,” she ex-plains.

The goal is to have 40 paid members by September 2010; membership fees are $30.

For now, members will have access to the commu-nity center gym Tuesday to Thursday 2-8 p.m. to orga-nize group activities.

“Besides the organized fit-ness classes, we thought we might get together and fol-low a Palates CD together or

something. The key is to get together, have some fun and feel better for it,” Lacombe says.

The club already has a president, secretary, Mary Marshman, and treasurer, Kim Salt, and holds meetings in the library.

“It’s safe to come to a meet-ing now; all the executive positions are full,” laughs La-combe. The next meeting is April 27, 7 p.m.

Students faced off in a badminton tournament this past weekend, to see who would carry on to provincials which are being held in Edmonton May 7 and 8.

Kenton Zandee is coach to the Strath-more team, which consists of over 45 students.

“We are doing extremely well,” said Zandee about the days events. The tournament began at 8 a.m. and the se-niors portion finished early, wrapping up by 2 p.m.

Jennifer Geereart and Michelle Ryan from Standard High School took the gold winning the girls doubles.

In the single boys match Tyson Zarowny, Strathmore High School, went against Tyson Newton from Didsbury.

“He beat me in the round robin 21-17, it was pretty close,” said Newton of his earlier match with Zarowny.

The two boys faced off and played the best out of three in the gold medal match. Zarowny won gold after beat-ing Newton 16-15. Newton took sil-ver for his division. The two boys will both be heading off to provincials next month.
