9 “For this is what Jehovah ofarmies, the God of Israel, says,‘Here in this place, in your daysand before your very eyes, I willput an end to the sounds of ex-ultation and rejoicing, the voiceof the bridegroom and the voiceof the bride.’a

10 “When you tell this peo-ple all these words, they will askyou, ‘Why has Jehovah spokenof all this great calamity againstus? What error and what sinhave we committed against Je-hovah our God?’b 11 You mustreply to them, ‘“Because yourforefathers abandoned me,”c de-clares Jehovah, “and they keptfollowing other gods and servingthem and bowing down to them.dBut me they abandoned, and mylaw they did not keep.e 12 Andyou have behaved far worsethan your forefathers, f and eachone of you follows the stubborn-ness of his wicked heart insteadof obeying me.g 13 So I willhurl you out of this land into aland that neither you nor yourforefathers have known,h andthere you will have to serve oth-er gods day and night, i becauseI will show you no favor.”’

14 “‘However, the days arecoming,’ declares Jehovah, ‘whenthey will no longer say: “As surelyas Jehovah is alive, who broughtthe people of Israel out of theland of Egypt!” j 15 but rather:“As surely as Jehovah is alive, who brought the people of Isra-el from the land of the north andfrom all the lands to which he haddispersed them!” and I will bringthem back to their land, which Igave to their forefathers.’k16 ‘Here I am sending for

many fishermen,’ declaresJehovah,

‘And they will fish for them. After that I will send for

many hunters,

And they will hunt themdown on every mountainand every hill

And out of the clefts of thecrags.

17 For my eyes are oneverything they do.

They have not been hiddenfrom before me,

Nor has their error beenhidden from my eyes.

18 First, I will repay the fullamount due for their errorand their sin,a

For they have profanedmy land with the lifelessfigures of their disgustingidols

And have filled myinheritance with theirdetestable things.’”b

19 O Jehovah, my strength andmy stronghold,

My place to flee in the dayof distress,c

To you the nations will comefrom the ends of the earth,

And they will say: “Ourforefathers inherited utterfalsehood,

Futility and useless thingsof no benefit.”d

20 Can a man make gods forhimself

When they are not reallygods?e

21 “So I will make them know,At this time I will make them

know my power and mymight,

And they will have to knowthat my name is Jehovah.”

17 “The sin of Judah iswritten down withan iron stylus.

With a diamond point it isengraved on the tabletof their heart

And on the horns of theiraltars,

16:17 Lit., “on all their ways.” 16:18Lit., “the corpses.”

2 While their sons remembertheir altars and theirsacred polesa

4 You will forfeit, of your ownaccord, your inheritancethat I gave you.e

And I will make you serveyour enemies in a land youdo not know,f

For you have kindled myanger like a fire.g

It will burn for all time.”5 This is what Jehovah says:

“Cursed is the man whoputs his trust in merehumans,h

Who relies on humanpower,i

And whose heart turns awayfrom Jehovah.

6 He will become like asolitary tree in the desert.

He will not see when goodcomes,

But he will reside in parchedplaces in the wilderness,

In a salt land where no onecan live.

7 Blessed is the man who putshis trust in Jehovah,

Whose confidence is inJehovah. j

8 He will become like a treeplanted by the waters,

That sends out its roots tothe stream.

He will not notice when heatcomes,

17:2 See Glossary. 17:4 Or possibly,“For as a fire you have been ignited inmy anger.” 17:5, 7 Or “strong man.”17:5 Lit., “makes flesh his arm.”

But his leaves will alwaysflourish.a

And in the year of droughthe will not be anxious,

Nor will he quit producingfruit.

9 The heart is more treach-erous than anything elseand is desperate.b

Who can know it?10 I, Jehovah, am searching

the heart,cExamining the innermost

thoughts,To give to each one

according to his ways,According to the fruitage

of his works.d11 Like a partridge that gathers

what it has not laid,So is the one who acquires

riches dishonestly.eThey will leave him in

midlife,And in the end he will prove

senseless.”12 A glorious throne, exalted

from the beginning,Is the place of our

sanctuary.f13 O Jehovah, the hope of

Israel,All those who abandon you

will be put to shame. Those apostatizing from

you will be written inthe dust,g

Because they have aban-doned Jehovah, the sourceof living water.h

14 Heal me, O Jehovah, andI will be healed.

Save me, and I will be saved, iFor you are the object of my

praise.15 Look! There are those saying

to me:

17:9 Or “deceitful.” Or possibly, “in-curable.” 17:10 Or “deepest emo-tions.” Lit., “kidneys.” 17:11 Or “butnot with justice.” 17:13 Lit., “fromme,” apparently referring to Jehovah.

“Where is the word ofJehovah?a

Let it come, please!”16 But as for me, I did not run

away from following youas a shepherd,

Nor did I long for the day ofdisaster.

You well know everything mylips have spoken;

It all took place before yourface!

17 Do not be a cause of terrorto me.

You are my refuge in the dayof calamity.

18 Let my persecutors be put toshame,b

But do not let me be put toshame.

Let them be struck withterror,

But do not let me be struckwith terror.

Bring the day of calamity onthem,c

And crush them and destroythem completely.

19 This is what Jehovah toldme: “Go and stand in the gate ofthe sons of the people by whichthe kings of Judah go in andout, and in all the gates ofJerusalem.d 20 You must sayto them, ‘Hear the word of Je-hovah, you kings of Judah, allpeople of Judah, and all inhabi-tants of Jerusalem, who enter bythese gates. 21 This is what Je-hovah says: “Watch yourselves, and do not carry any load onthe Sabbath day or bring it inthrough the gates of Jerusalem.e22 You must not bring any loadout of your homes on the Sab-bath day; and you must do nowork at all. f Keep the Sabbathday sacred, just as I commandedyour forefathers.g 23 But theydid not listen or incline their ear,

17:18 Or “destroy them twice over.”17:21 Or “your souls.”

and they stubbornly refused toobey or to accept discipline.”’a

24 “‘“However, if you strict-ly obey me,” declares Jeho-vah, “and you bring in no loadthrough the gates of this city onthe Sabbath day, and you keepthe Sabbath day sacred by notdoing any work on it,b 25 thenkings and princes who sit on thethrone of Davidc will also en-ter in through the gates of thiscity, riding in the chariot and onhorses, they and their princes, the men of Judah and the in-habitants of Jerusalem;d and thiscity will be inhabited for alltime. 26 And people will comefrom the cities of Judah, fromthe places around Jerusalem, from the land of Benjamin,e fromthe lowland, f from the moun-tainous region, and from theNegeb, bringing whole burntofferings,g sacrifices,h grain of-ferings, i frankincense, andthanksgiving sacrifices into thehouse of Jehovah. j

27 “‘“But if you do not obeyme by keeping the Sabbath daysacred and by not carrying loadsand bringing them through thegates of Jerusalem on the Sab-bath day, I will set her gates onfire, and it will certainly con-sume the fortified towers of Je-rusalemk and will not be extin-guished.”’” l

18 This is the word that cameto Jeremiah from Jeho-

vah: 2 “Rise up and go downto the house of the potter,m andthere I will cause you to hear mywords.”

3 So I went down to thehouse of the potter, and he wasworking on the potter’s wheels.4 But the vessel that the pot-ter was making with the claywas spoiled in his hand. So the

5 Then the word of Jehovahcame to me, saying: 6 “‘Can Inot do to you just as this potterdid, O house of Israel?’ declaresJehovah. ‘Look! As the clay inthe hand of the potter, so are youin my hand, O house of Israel.a7 Whenever I may speak aboutuprooting and pulling down anddestroying a nation or a king-dom,b 8 and that nation aban-dons its wickedness that I spokeagainst, I will also change mymind concerning the calamitythat I intended to bring againstit.c 9 But whenever I speakabout building up and planting anation or a kingdom, 10 and itdoes what is bad in my eyes anddoes not obey my voice, I willchange my mind concerning thegood that I intended to do for it.’

nocent ones.a 5 They built thehigh places of Baal in order toburn their sons in the fire aswhole burnt offerings to Baal, bsomething that I had not com-manded or spoken of and thathad never even come into myheart.”’c

6 “‘“Therefore look! the daysare coming,” declares Jehovah,“when this place will no longerbe called Topheth or the Val-ley of the Son of Hinnom butthe Valley of the Slaughter.d 7 Iwill thwart the plans of Judahand Jerusalem in this place, andI will make them fall by thesword before their enemies andby the hand of those seeking totake their life. And I will givetheir dead bodies as food to thebirds of the heavens and to thebeasts of the earth.e 8 And Iwill make this city an object ofhorror and something to whis-tle at. Every last one passing byit will stare in horror and whis-tle over all its plagues.f 9 AndI will make them eat the fleshof their sons and daughters, andthey will each eat the flesh of hisfellow man, because of the siegeand their desperation when theyare hemmed in by their enemiesand those seeking to take theirlife.”’g

10 “Then break the flask be-fore the eyes of the men who gowith you, 11 and say to them,‘This is what Jehovah of armiessays: “This is how I will breakthis people and this city, likesomeone who breaks a potter’svessel so that it can never berepaired; and they will bury thedead in Topheth until there isno more room to bury them.”’h

Warmly welcome whom? Anyone who attends our Christianmeetings—from newcomers to longtime friends. (Ro 15:7;Heb 13:2) It could be a fellow believer visiting from anothercountry or an inactive Christian attending for the first timein years. Imagine how you would feel in such circumstances.Would you not appreciate a warm greeting? (Mt 7:12) Sowhy not make a greater effort to move about the KingdomHall and greet others before and after the meeting? Thiscontributes to a warm and loving atmosphere and bringshonor to Jehovah. Treasures From God’s Word

Jeremiah 18:1-4—A potter has authority over the clay

Reference: w99 4/1 22 paragraph 3.

The need for a willing, obedient response on your part if you are to benefit from Jehovah’s

molding influence was powerfully illustrated when Jehovah told the prophet Jeremiah to visit the

workshop of a potter. Jeremiah saw the potter change his mind about what to do with one vessel

when the product he was trying to make “was spoiled by the potter’s hand.” Jehovah then said:

“Am I not able to do just like this potter to you people, O house of Israel? . . . Look! As the clay

in the hand of the potter, so you are in my hand, O house of Israel.” (Jeremiah 18:1-6) Did that

mean that people in Israel were just like lumps of lifeless clay in Jehovah’s hands for him to

mold arbitrarily into one kind of vessel or another?

Jeremiah 18:5-10—Jehovah has authority over mankind

Reference: it-2 776 paragraph 4.

A potter may begin to make one type of vessel and then change to another style if the vessel is

“spoiled by the potter’s hand.” (Jeremiah 18:3, 4) By this example Jehovah illustrates, not that he

is like a human potter in ‘spoiling by his hand,’ but rather, that he has divine authority over

mankind, authority to adjust his dealings with them according to the way they respond or fail to

respond to his righteousness and mercy. (Compare Isaiah 45:9; Romans 9:19-21.) He can thus

“feel regret over the calamity that [he] had thought to execute” upon a nation, or “feel regret over

the good that [he] said to [himself] to do for its good,” all depending upon the reaction of the

nation to his prior dealings with it. (Jeremiah 18:5-10) Thus, it is not that the Great Potter,

Jehovah, errs, but rather, that the human “clay” undergoes a “metamorphosis” (change of form or

composition) as to its heart condition, producing regret, or a change of feeling, on Jehovah’s

part.

Jeremiah 18:11—Respond favorably to Jehovah’s molding

Reference: w99 4/1 22 paragraphs 4-5.

Jehovah never uses his almighty power to make people do things against their will; nor is he

responsible for defective products, as might be the case with a human potter. (Deuteronomy

32:4) Defects develop when those whom Jehovah tries to mold in a positive way resist his

direction. That is one huge difference between you and a lifeless lump of clay. You have free

will. Exercising it, you can choose to respond to Jehovah’s molding influence or deliberately

reject it.

Page 15: APRIL 3-9 JEREMIAH 17-21da-ip.getmyip.com/pdf/Study prep/2017/14 Study Prep 04-03-17.pdf · Jer 17:9—How may the heart’s treachery become manifest? (w01 10/15 25 13) Jer 20:7—In

What a sobering lesson! How much better to listen to Jehovah’s voice instead of arrogantly

asserting, “No one tells me what to do”! We all need Jehovah’s guiding influence. (John 17:3)

Be like the psalmist David, who prayed: “Make me know your own ways, O Jehovah; teach me

your own paths.” (Psalm 25:4) Remember what King Solomon said: “A wise person will listen

and take in more instruction.” (Proverbs 1:5) Will you listen? If you do, then “thinking ability

itself will keep guard over you, discernment itself will safeguard you.”—Proverbs 2:11.

Digging for Spiritual Gems

Jeremiah 17:9—How may the heart’s treachery become manifest?

Reference: w01 10/15 25 paragraph 13.

“The heart is more treacherous than anything else and is desperate,” warned Jeremiah. (Jeremiah

17:9) This treachery of the heart may manifest itself when we make excuses for our errors,

minimize shortcomings, rationalize away serious personality flaws, or exaggerate

accomplishments. A desperate heart is also capable of taking on a two-sided posture—smooth

lips saying one thing, actions saying another. (Psalm 12:2; Proverbs 23:7) How vital that we be

honest as we examine what comes out of the heart!

Jeremiah 20:7—In what way did Jehovah use his strength against Jeremiah and fool him?

Reference: w07 3/15 9 paragraph 6.

Because of facing indifference, rejection, and persecution when declaring Jehovah’s judgments,

Jeremiah might have felt that he did not have the strength to continue. However, Jehovah used

his strength against such inclinations, empowering Jeremiah to continue. Jehovah thus fooled

Jeremiah by using him to accomplish what the prophet himself thought he could not do.

Special metropolitan public witnessing has been or-ganized at 127 locations in 14 cities in the UnitedStates. During the first seven months of the 2015 ser-vice year, 8,445 Bible studies were started! This formof witnessing has also been instrumental in helpingmany who were formerly associated to get involvedwith true worship once again. For instance, a mannamed Terry was looking over one of our literature dis-plays in Los Angeles, California, so the Witness coupleat the table asked if he had read our literature before. Heexplained that he is one of Jehovah’s Witnesses butthat he had been inactive for about four years. The cou-ple read and discussed with him Ezekiel 34:11, whereJehovah says: “I myself will search for my sheep, and Iwill care for them.” They told him about our websiteand JW Broadcasting. The next morning Terry e-mailedthe brother, explaining that just moments before hesaw the witnessing table, he had begged for God’s for-giveness for neglecting congregation meetings. He hadalso asked for help to draw closer to Jehovah. “Then yougreeted me warmly,” said Terry. “You read that encour-aging scripture to me and provided me with the infor-mation that I need to get back in step with Jehovah’s or-ganization. It was an answer to my prayer.”

There are four special metropolitan public witnessinglocations in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In three monthsthe brothers placed 37,275 publications, and 629 peo-ple requested a visit from the Witnesses. Among themany who accepted a Bible Teach book was an older

11. How can we show oursupport for the MessianicKing?12. For many years, howdid the Bible Students viewthe cross?

IN December 1928, Brother Richard H.Barber (circled at left) delivered a powerfulradio discourse on the subject of Christmas. The content of that discourse was published inThe Golden Age of December 12, 1928, underthe title “Christmas, Its Origin and Purpose.”Among the statements in the discourse werethe following:

ˇ “Satan . . . has taught the people togive more prominence to the birth of the

babe Jesus than to the death of the manJesus, in order to hide the importance ofthe ransom.”

ˇ “Every one is aware of the spirit of frivolity, debauchery, drunkenness and revelry soprevalent during the Christmas season . . .Surely none of these things honor eitherJehovah God or His Son.”

ˇ “The Devil has now succeeded in graftinghis counterfeit festivals, feast days, fastdays and holy days upon the church . . .The Devil has succeeded in getting thepeople to adopt all his wicked schemesand to give them the name Christian, inorder that thus he might mock the greatJehovah God.”

unclean origins of this holiday. How did God’s people re-spond to the clear direction from headquarters? Recall-ing when he and his family stopped celebrating Christ-mas, Brother Charles Brandlein said: “Did we mind puttingthose pagan things away? Absolutely not! . . . It was justlike taking a soiled garment off and throwing it away.” Re-flecting a similar spirit, Brother Henry A. Cantwell, who lat-er served as a traveling overseer, recalled: “We were pleasedthat we were able to give up something to prove our lovefor Jehovah.” Christ’s loyal followers were willing to makethe needed changes and have no part in a celebration thatstemmed from unclean worship.[4]—John 15:19; 17:14.

11 What a fine example those faithful Bible Students setfor us! Reflecting on their example, we do well to ask our-selves: ‘How do I view the direction we receive from head-quarters? Do I gratefully accept it and apply what I learn?’Our willing obedience shows our support for the Messian-ic King, who is using the faithful slave to dispense timelyspiritual food.—Acts 16:4, 5.

Should Christians Use the Cross?12 For many years, the Bible Students viewed the cross

as an acceptable symbol of Christianity. They certainly didnot feel that the cross should be worshipped, for they

[4] In a personal letter dated Novem-ber 14, 1927, Brother Frederick W.Franz wrote: “We will have no Christ-mas this year. The Bethel family hasvoted not to have Christmas anymore.”A few months later, in a letter datedFebruary 6, 1928, Brother Franz wrote:“Little by little the Lord is cleansing usfrom the errors of the Devil’s Babylon-ish organization.”

understood that idolatry is wrong. (1 Cor. 10:14; 1 John 5:21) As early as 1883, the Watch Tower frankly stated that “allidolatry is an abomination to God.” Yet, at first, the BibleStudents saw no objection to what they thought were ap-propriate uses of the cross. For example, they proudly worea cross-and-crown pin as an identifying badge. To them itsignified that if they proved faithful to death, they wouldreceive the crown of life. Beginning in 1891, a cross-and-crown symbol appeared on the cover of the Watch Tower.

13 The Bible Students cherished the cross-and-crownemblem. Starting in the late 1920’s, however, Christ’s fol-lowers were progressively enlightened regarding the use ofthe cross. Reflecting on the 1928 assembly held in Detroit,Michigan, U.S.A., Brother Grant Suiter, who later servedon the Governing Body, recalled: “At the assembly the cross-and-crown emblems were shown to be not only unneces-sary but objectionable.” Over the next few years, more en-lightenment followed. It was clear that the cross has noplace in worship that is pure and spiritually clean.

14 How did God’s people respond to the progressive en-lightenment they received about the cross? Did they con-tinue to hold on to the cross-and-crown emblem, whichhad been so dear to them? “We easily gave it up when werealized what it represented,” recalled Lela Roberts, a long-time servant of Jehovah. Another faithful sister, Ursula Se-renco, expressed the feelings of many, saying: “We came torecognize that what we once cherished as symbolic or rep-resentative of the death of our Lord and of our Christiandevotion was really a pagan symbol. In harmony with Prov-erbs 4:18, we were grateful that the path was being morebrightly illuminated.” Christ’s loyal followers wanted tohave no part in unclean false religious practices!

15 We share that determination today. We recognize thatChrist has been using a clearly recognizable channel—hisfaithful and discreet slave—to help his people keep spiritu-ally clean. Hence, when the spiritual food we receive alertsus to observances, practices, or customs that are tainted byfalse religion, we promptly and obediently respond. Likeour brothers and sisters who lived in the early part ofChrist’s presence, we are determined to keep the earthlycourtyards of Jehovah’s spiritual temple clean.

16 Throughout the last days, Christ has also been work-ing behind the scenes to protect the congregations of Jeho-vah’s people from individuals who could cause spiritualcontamination. How has he done so? Let us see.

17, 18. In the illustration ofthe dragnet, what is themeaning of (a) lettingdown the dragnet,(b) “gathering fish of everykind,” (c) collecting the finefish into containers, and(d) throwing away the fishthat were not suitable?19. How do you feel aboutwhat Christ has been doingto safeguard the cleannessof God’s people and thepurity of true worship?

Separating “the Wicked From Among the Righteous”17 The King Jesus Christ keeps awatchful eye on the con-

gregations of God’s people earth wide. In ways that we can-not fully perceive, Christ and the angels have been doing aseparating work. Jesus described this work in his illustra-tion of the dragnet. (Read Matthew 13:47-50.) What doesthe illustration mean?

18 Letting “a dragnet . . . down into the sea.” The dragnetrepresents the Kingdom preaching that is taking placethroughout the sea of humanity. “Gathering fish of everykind.” The good news attracts people of all kinds—thosewho take steps to become true Christians, as well asmany others who may initially show some interest but donot really take a stand for pure worship.[5] Collecting “thefine ones into containers.” Honesthearted ones are gatheredinto containerlike congregations, where they can renderclean worship to Jehovah. Throwing away “the unsuitable” fish.Throughout the last days, Christ and the angels have beenseparating “the wicked from among the righteous.”[6] Asa result, those who lack the right heart condition—whoare perhaps unwilling to abandon wrong beliefs or prac-tices—have not been allowed to taint the congregations.[7]

19 Is it not reassuring to know that our King, JesusChrist, is protective of those under his care? And is it notcomforting to know that his zeal for true worship—andtrue worshippers—is as fervent today as it was when hecleansed the temple in the first century C.E.? How thank-ful we are that Christ has been working to safeguard thespiritual cleanness of God’s people and the purity of trueworship! We can show our support for the King and hisKingdom by avoiding all contact with false religion.

[5] Consider, for example, that in2013, there was a peak of 7,965,954publishers, while 19,241,252 attendedthe annual observance of the Memori-al of Christ’s death.

[6] The separating of the fine fish fromthe unsuitable fish is not the same asthe separating of the sheep from thegoats. (Matt. 25:31-46) The separat-ing, or final judgment, of the sheepand the goats takes place during thecoming great tribulation. Until then, those who are like unsuitable fish mayreturn to Jehovah and be gathered intocontainerlike congregations.—Mal. 3:7.

[7] Eventually, the unsuitable ones willsymbolically be cast into a fiery fur-nace, denoting their future destruction.

THE very first words of the Bible make this simple but pro-found statement: “In the beginning God created the heavensand the earth.” (Gen. 1:1) It is true that we have only a littleunderstanding of the many things God created, such asspace, light, and gravity, and we have seen only a small frac-tion of the universe. (Eccl. 3:11) Yet, Jehovah has revealedto us his purpose for the earth and for mankind. The earthwas to be an ideal home for men and women created in God’simage. (Gen. 1:26) They would be his children, and Jehovahwould be their Father.

2 As explained in the third chapter of Genesis, Jehovah’spurpose encountered a challenge. (Gen. 3:1-7) However, thatchallenge was by no means insurmountable. No one canstand in Jehovah’s way. (Isa. 46:10, 11; 55:11) Therefore, wecan be certain that Jehovah’s original purpose will be ful-filled exactly on time!

3 No doubt, we are familiar with Bible truths about God’s

purpose for the earth and mankind andabout the central role of Jesus Christ inthe outworking of God’s purpose. Theyare of fundamental importance and arelikely among the first truths we learnedwhen we began to study God’s Word. We, in turn, want to help sincere peo-ple to become familiar with these vitalteachings. Currently, as we are consid-ering this article as a congregation, weare striving to invite as many people aspossible to the Memorial of Christ’sdeath. (Luke 22:19, 20) Those who at-tend will learn much regarding God’spurpose. So in these last few days be-fore the Memorial, it is timely that wethink about specific questions that wecan use to stimulate the interest of ourBible students and other sincere in-dividuals in this important event. Wewill consider three questions: What wasGod’s original purpose for the earthand mankind? What went wrong? Andwhy is Jesus’ ransom sacrifice the keythat unlocks the door for God’s purposeto be accomplished?

WHAT WAS THE CREATOR’SORIGINAL PURPOSE?

4 Jehovah is an awe-inspiring Creator.Everything he creates meets the higheststandards. (Gen. 1:31; Jer. 10:12) Whatcan we learn from the beauty and orderthat are evident in creation? When ob-serving creation, we are impressed withthe way all of Jehovah’s creative works, small and large, serve a beneficial pur-pose. Who does not marvel at the intri-cacies of the human cell, the delicate-ness of a newborn baby, or the splendorof a gorgeous sunset? We admire thesecreations because we have a built-in

sense of what is truly beautiful.—ReadPsalm 19:1; 104:24.

5 As is evident in creation, Jehovahlovingly set boundaries. He made bothnatural laws and moral laws to ensurethat everything functions harmonious-ly. (Ps. 19:7-9) Hence, all things in theuniverse have an assigned place andfunction according to their role in God’spurpose. Jehovah sets the standard forhow his creation should work together. Thus, the law of gravity holds the at-mosphere close to the earth, regulatestides and oceans, and contributes to thephysical order essential to life on earth. All creation, including humans, movesand functions within these boundaries.Clearly, the order in creation testifiesthat God has a purpose for earth andmankind. In our ministry, can we drawattention to the Cause of this impressiveorder?—Rev. 4:11.

6 Jehovah’s original purpose was formankind to live forever here on earth.(Gen. 1:28; Ps. 37:29) He generouslygave Adam and Eve a variety of preciousgifts that enabled them to enjoy life.(Read James 1:17.) Jehovah gave themfree will, the ability to reason, and thecapacity to love and to enjoy friendship. The Creator spoke to Adam and in-structed him on how to show his obedi-ence. Adam also learned how to takecare of his needs and how to care for theanimals and the land. (Gen. 2:15-17, 19,20) Jehovah also created Adam and Evewith the senses of taste, touch, sight, sound, and smell. Thus they could enjoyto the full the beauty and bounty of

their Paradise home. For the first hu-man pair, the possibilities for satisfyingwork, accomplishment, and discoverywere endless.

7 What else was part of God’s pur-pose? Jehovah created Adam and Evewith the ability to have perfect children.God had in mind for their children tohave children, until the human familyfilled the whole earth. He wanted Adamand Eve and all parents after them tolove their children as Jehovah lovedhis first perfect human children. Earth, with all its resources, was to becometheir permanent home.—Ps. 115:16.

WHAT WENT WRONG?8 Things did not immediately work

out as God had purposed. Why not? Je-hovah gave Adam and Eve a simple lawthat served to test whether they recog-nized the limits of their freedom. Hesaid: “From every tree of the garden youmay eat to satisfaction. But as for thetree of the knowledge of good and bad,you must not eat from it, for in the dayyou eat from it you will certainly die.”(Gen. 2:16, 17) It was not hard for Adamand Eve to understand this law; nor wasit a hardship for them to obey it. Afterall, they had more food available thanthey could eat.

9 Satan the Devil, using a serpent, fooled Eve into disobeying her Father,Jehovah. (Read Genesis 3:1-5; Rev.12:9) Satan made an issue of the factthat God’s human children were not al-lowed to eat “from every tree of the gar-

den.” It was as if he were saying: ‘Youmean you cannot do what you want?’Next, he told a blatant lie: “You certain-ly will not die.” Then he tried to con-vince Eve that she need not listen toGod, saying: “God knows that in thevery day you eat from it, your eyes willbe opened.” Satan implied that Jehovahdid not want them to eat the fruit be-cause doing so would enlighten them.Further, Satan made this false promise:“Youwill be like God, knowing good andbad.”

10 Now Adam and Eve had to decidewhat to do. Would they obey Jehovah,or would they listen to the serpent? They decided to disobey God. By doingso, they joined Satan’s rebellion. Theyrejected Jehovah as their Father and es-tranged themselves from the security ofhis protective rule.—Gen. 3:6-13.

11 By rebelling against Jehovah, Adamand Eve lost their perfection. Moreover, their rebellion resulted in alienationfrom Jehovah because his “eyes are toopure to look on what is evil.” Therefore,he “cannot tolerate wickedness.” (Hab.1:13) If he had tolerated it, the well-being of all living creatures—in heav-en and on earth—would be threatened.Above all, had God done nothing aboutthe sin committed in Eden, his owntrustworthiness would have been calledinto question. But Jehovah is faithful tohis own standards; he never violatesthem. (Ps. 119:142) Thus, having freewill did not entitle Adam and Eve to dis-regard God’s law. As a consequence ofrebelling against Jehovah, they died andreturned to the dust from which theyhad been created.—Gen. 3:19.

11. Why does Jehovah not tolerate rebellion?

6 THE WATCHTOWER

12 When Adam and Eve ate of thatfruit, they put themselves in a positionwhere they could no longer be acceptedas members of God’s universal family.God expelled them from Eden, and theyhad no hope of ever returning. (Gen. 3:23, 24) In doing so, Jehovah justly madethem face the consequences of theirown decision. (Read Deuteronomy 32:4, 5.) No longer perfect, man could notreflect God’s qualities perfectly. Adamnot only lost a marvelous future forhimself but also handed down to hischildren imperfection, sin, and death.(Rom. 5:12) He deprived his offspring ofthe prospect of life without end. Fur-thermore, Adam and Eve could no lon-ger have a perfect child; neither couldany of their children have a perfectchild. After turning Adam and Eve awayfrom God, Satan the Devil has contin-ued to mislead mankind until today.—John 8:44.

THE RANSOM HEALS A RIFT13 God’s love for humans, however,

endures. Despite Adam and Eve’s rebel-lion, Jehovah wants mankind to enjoy agood relationship with him. He doesnot desire any to die. (2 Pet. 3:9) Soright after the rebellion, God made ar-rangements to enable humans to restoretheir friendship with him while he atthe same time maintained his own righ-teous standards. How did Jehovah ac-complish this?

14 Read John 3:16. Many whom we

invite to the Memorial will know thisverse by heart. But the question is,How does Jesus’ sacrifice make everlast-ing life possible? The Memorial cam-paign, the Memorial itself, and the callswe later make on those who attend-ed may provide us with the opportuni-ty to help sincere truth-seekers to un-derstand the answer to that importantquestion. Such ones may be impressedwhen they begin to understand to a full-er degree how Jehovah’s love and wis-dom are expressed by the ransom provi-sion. What points about the ransomcould we highlight?

15 Jehovah provided a perfect man whocould become the ransomer. That perfectman would need to be loyal to Jehovahand be willing to give his life in ex-change for doomed humanity. (Rom. 5:17-19) Jehovah transferred the life of hisvery first creation from heaven to earth.(John 1:14) Jesus thus became a per-fect human, just as Adam had been. But unlike Adam, Jesus lived up to thestandard Jehovah expected from a per-fect man. Even under the most extremetests, Jesus never sinned nor broke anyof God’s laws.

16 As a perfect man, Jesus could save hu-mankind from sin and death by dying intheir behalf. He corresponded exactly toall that Adam should have been—a per-fect man, absolutely loyal and obedientto God. (1 Tim. 2:6) Jesus became theransom sacrifice that opened the way toendless life “for many”—men, women, and children. (Matt. 20:28) Indeed, theransom is the key that unlocks the doorto the fulfillment of God’s original pur-

15. How did the man Jesus differ from the manAdam?16. Why is the ransom such a precious gift?

pose. (2 Cor. 1:19, 20) The ransom givesall faithful humans the prospect of ever-lasting life.

JEHOVAH OPENED THE DOORFOR US TO RETURN

17 Jehovah provided the ransom atgreat cost to himself. (1 Pet. 1:19) Hevalues humanity so highly that he waswilling to let his only-begotten Son diein ourbehalf. (1 John 4:9, 10) In a sense,Jesus takes the place of our original hu-man father, Adam. (1 Cor. 15:45) By do-ing so, Jesus restores more than life; hegives us the opportunity to return even-tually to God’s family. Yes, on the basisof Jesus’ sacrifice, Jehovah can accepthumans back into his family withoutcompromising his righteousness. Is itnot heartwarming to think of a timewhen all faithful humans will be broughtto perfection? There will be completeunity between the heavenly and earthlyparts of his family. In the fullest sense,we will all be children of God.—Rom.8:21.

18 Satan’s rebellion did not stop Jeho-vah from extending his love to man-kind, nor can it prevent even imperfecthumans from being loyal to Jehovah.Through his provision of the ransom,Jehovah will help all of his childrento become completely righteous. Imag-ine what life will be like when every-one “who recognizes the Son and exer-cises faith” will have everlasting life.(John 6:40) With great love and wis-dom, Jehovahwill bring the human fam-ily to perfection, according to his origi-nal purpose. Jehovah, our Father, will

17. What does the ransom make possible?18. When will Jehovah become “all things toeveryone”?

then become “all things to everyone.”—1 Cor. 15:28.

19 Gratitude for the ransom shouldmotivate us to do all we can to makeothers aware that they can benefit fromthat priceless gift. People need to knowthat the ransom is the means by whichJehovah lovingly offers all mankind theprospect of everlasting life. Still, theransom accomplished even more thanthat. The next article will consider howJesus’ sacrifice also addresses the moralissues that were raised by Satan back inthe garden of Eden.

19. (a) Gratitude for the ransom should moveus to do what? (See the box “Let Us KeepSearching Out Deserving Ones.”) (b) What as-pect of the ransom will we consider next?
