Honey, I SHrunk tHe ???Honey, I shrunk the dog!! Four or ve months ago, I reportedthat Te Jet was a burly 105 pounds. ruly a Jumbo Jet or at leasta close acsimile. Consultation with the vet people suggested thatTe Jet was overly Jumbo and should be shrunk and downsizedAer months o kibble reduction and more exercise he recentlychecked in with a weight loss o 10 pounds. From Jumbo he hasgone now to being the Big Jet. Following urther consultation withthe vet olks, it became evident that they want to see a FighterJet, and so the kibble reduction and exercise will continue orprobably another 10 to 15 pounds!!! Te strange thing is . . . theJet doesnt act any hungrier now than he ever did. Which meanshe still lets you know whenever he thinks that kibble time is closeby getting very bouncy!!Honey, I shrunk the Wie!! Yes siree, Te Jet is not the only one

on reduced kibble and increased exercise. Te missus has beenlosing a ew pounds hersel!! Unlike Te Jet, however, she hasntbeen anywhere near as riendly come meal time. I get particularlyconcerned though, when I nd her sning around Te Jets ooddish. I it ever came to a kibble ght, I am araid o what damagemight happen to my Boy!!

Honey, I shrunk the Mikie!! Yup . . . me too. Right along withTe Jet, I have dropped about 10 pounds also!! It just didnt seemair that he was targeted or kibble reduction all by himsel. rueleadership is all about NO expecting others to suer while wecontinue to stu ourselves at the kibble dish. rue leadership isnot concerned about getting rid o others at, while ignoring ourown!!

Honey, I am going to shrink the trees!! I have been studyingup on modern woodlot management and one o the key ndingsis that trees need to be thinned out just like carrots. rees thatare growing too close together tend to be more deormed, weakerand more subject to disease. By spacing trees properly the overalhealth o the orest can be improved and overall wood growth peracre or hectare can be improved signicantly. Tis means thathealthy orests are removing more carbon rom the atmosphereWhich is a good thing!! Perhaps, more on this topic in a ollowupRavings.

So during the next ew months I am going to be very busy, buthe most important project will be to keep Te Jet leaner andaster than the missus, so that he can consistently win the race tothe kibble dish!! 800

    wHy I reLAyby Patty Howe

In December o 2003, lie as I knew itwould change orever. My mother had beendiagnosed with breast cancer and uterinecancer. In just a matter o moments, thewhole bottom ell out o my world. I hadso many questions but the most burningquestion was how could this be happeningto us

As I went through the motions every daytaking care o my mothers daily needs, going to doctors appointments, lling outpaperwork and helping her to plan or

her own uneral, I elt overwhelmed and wanted to sit and cry.Instead, I waited until my mother was in bed or the night and Iwent to my room and cried and sobbed until the tears would notcome anymore. I could not let her see what this disease was doingto me.

She never had the opportunity to decide whether she wantedto take treatment or not because the cancer spread so rapidly.Shortly aer Christmas that year, she underwent brain surgery toremove a tumor that would kill her in two weeks i le alone. Sherecovered rom this surgery remarkably well and we had renewedhope that she might be able to ght this disease. Tat hope wasshort-lived. While I was still struggling to come to grips with whatthis disease was doing to us, my mother had ound a peace in herheart that enabled her to help us accept the reality o what washappening. My mother passed away on March 27th, 2004.On March 22nd o 2010, cancer again struck my amily. Tat day, I

lost my uncle, my riend and another huge part o my heart. Eachand every blow that this disease deals us makes it increasinglyhard to bear.

In these past ew years, not only have I lost two very importantpeople in my lie to this disease but I have also had a ew riendswho have come ace to ace with cancer and ought the battle otheir lives. Tese people are true heroes and have inspired me todo more to ensure that this disease is eliminated.

Why do I relay? I relay in the hopes that others wont have toendure the pain o losing someone they love to this disease. Irelay because I want to help cancer patients and their amiliesconcentrate on ghting this disease. I relay so that they can havethe treatments that they need to ght this disease. But most oall, I relay in hopes that we can nd a cure and eliminate thisdisease orever. It is my hope that together, we can make thishappen. Please join us on J 10h 2011, show your support, buy a luminary, make a donation or enter your team to make adierence in the lives o cancer patients everywhere. 335

wHy we Do wHAt we DoIt has been nearly eleven years since I le my sae secure (andboring) government job or the stresses and insecurities o beinga business owner. I have oen said to people that i I had anyidea o the complexity o the job I would never have had thecourage. Fortunately, since it all happened within a space oa single week, I really did not have time to think about whatcame aer the purchase. As the business has grown, my rolehas moved more and more away rom the day-to-day operationand more into the business management. Tat does take me astep away rom the regular contact with our readers, but everyonce in a while we are vividly reminded o why we are in thisbusiness. It is about so much more than making a living.

We recently ran an article submitted by an organization calledWorkers 4Wishes who had planned to send an 11 year old

boy ghting cancer to Florida or his March break. Te tripcould not take place because o health problems, so alternativearrangements were made or the amily to vacation throughoutNew Brunswick instead. A good story about good people doinggood things. Sharing these stories with the community is whatwe do. But it is the ollow-up that really brings it home. Shortlyaer the article ran, we had a phone call here at the oce rom alady who had been touched by the story and the groups eortsand wanted to know i she could help.We dont always get to see the direct result o the articles we run

in our publications, but when, as with this instance, we do, we arevividly reminded o why we are your community connection. When we hear rom people that their undraiser was a bigsuccess, that their church supper sold out or lots o volunteers

came orward to make a project happen, we realize what a vitalrole we play in connecting people within our communities.

I could have made more money or less eort staying withthat sae secure (and boring) government job, but it would nothave ed my soul like Ossekeag Publishing does. Tank you toeveryone at Ossekeag who has the same passion or doing whatwe do. Its a great way to make a living. 801
