Last week’s top 75 current country albums sold a combined 325,000 copies, according to industry sources. The one-week total is the low- est mark since the 1991 advent of SoundScan, and is the fourth sub-400,000 unit week so far this year. Five more were recorded in the last half of 2007. In an industry that used to be concerned when weekly sales dipped below 500,000, this is a distressing development. Mitigating the album sales slide is the un- derstanding that physical CD sales are not the whole picture. Digital album, single and ring tone sales are not included in those numbers. “I’m looking at our numbers on Josh Gracin, whose album came out last week, and we sold more singles than albums,” says Lyric Street VP/Sales, Marketing & Media Greg McCarn. “iTunes was our No. 1 account, even though Wal-Mart sold more albums,” he explains. “And that doesn’t even count ring tones. Still, the album chart is a pretty good gauge. Donald Trump and the producers, ‘You don’t know what you’re asking me to do. There’s no way. It would be like asking a bunch of actors to show up in New York City the day after the Oscars.’ “The taping was actually the next day, but a lot of my other friends actually had gigs that night, too. It was an anxious, frustrating day. I laid out in the boardroom what I was up against and why

I couldn’t fill the room with country stars, but they conveniently cut that out. I was just so happy when Eddie Montgomery, Ronnie Milsap and Dean Sams walked in the door.” Adkins also tells the inside story about paying his respects to the veterans on the show – something the TV crew tried to prevent. “At rehearsal, I told the director and everybody around, ‘Look, you have two choices,’” explains Adkins. “’Number one, get me off the stage where I’m not in the program. Because if I am onstage and these men come out, I’m going to take my hat off, walk over, shake their hands and tell them I support them. Put a camera on me or not, I don’t care. I’m not trying to upstage Piers Morgan or stand in his light. I just want to say, ‘Thank you’ and walk away. I’m telling you now I’m going to do that, and if you think you’ve got a bouncer big enough to stop me, then let’s do it. But I don’t think you do.’ They just looked at me and said, ‘OK.’ They knew they didn’t have a choice. It was something I absolutely had to do, and they couldn’t stop me.” Chuckling with the caveat “I’m not startin’ the rumor that they’re datin’,” Adkins also reveals that following John Rich’s appearance on the show, Rich and Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka “went out on the town one night.” Says Adkins, “Ivanka is a big country fan and was practically giddy that John was there. John was very, very excited to get to talk to her, and of course, that boy never misses an opportunity. I think they went out to a few clubs one night.”

My Tunes: Music ThaT shaped My Life CC RVPP and KEEY/Minneapolis PD Gregg Swedberg discusses his most meaningful songs, albums or concerts:1. British Power Pop, 1965-1980: I like happy, bouncy songs. Stiff Records rules. “Cruel To Be Kind” by Nick Lowe might be the perfect song. Or “Red Rubber Ball” by Cyrkle. Or “Magic” by Pilot. You get it.2. Prince Dirty Mind (1980): It’s his Purple Highness’ best CD, sorry Purple Rain. No radio hits. This was the stage of

my life when girls started talking to me, and I wasn’t too scared to talk back, so maybe that’s a factor.3. Garth Brooks, Minnesota State Fair, 1992: I came to the format in 1991, I hadn’t seen the G-Man before, and this was almost a religious experience. He is still doing some of the same things now that he did back then, but I completely get sucked into his live show.4. Brad Paisley, Tim DuBois’ living room, 1999: I was mesmerized by his clever songwriting and flawless guitar play. Plus, he made me cry. I hope to someday return that favor.5. Haven’t heard it yet: But my ears are wide open, and I’m waiting for a label to bring it by the station sometime soon.• A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: I’ve never listened to the Woodstock album. Bunch of dope smoking hippies if you ask me.• An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: I don’t get Jimi Hendrix. Sorry. You can’t sing along with the songs, you can barely understand the lyrics, our format probably has 20 better guitar players. OK, watch lightning hit me. I also can take or leave Pink Floyd. I only listen to them when I need to feel suicidal, which isn’t often, I must admit.

• KHAK/Cedar Rapids, IA PD/afternoon personality Bob James is seeking a midday jock with the possibility of adding APD/MD duties. Send airchecks and resumes to [email protected].• WTQR/Greensboro PD John Roberts is still on the hunt for a new morning show, single or team. Send airchecks and resumes to [email protected].

CD Sales (continued from page 1) Galante adds, “And I don’t think everyone has felt the same amount of pain. When we reach that point it’s going to be a painful process. There will be some people out of this business because you can’t support the structure based on the revenue. “If this is a permanent trend -- and we’ve only seen this the last eight months -- the publishers will feel it at the end of the second and third quarters. Writers will feel it after that. All the other business that feed off this revenue stream will feel it dramatically. GalanteNothing indicates this is just a blip.” Capitol/Nashville President/CEO Mike Dungan pins much of the decline on a struggling economy. “Gas at $3.25 is hurting people,” he says. “Retail is virtually a ghost town. For the first time I can remember I can go to restaurants and get right in. People are staying home. They’ve been hurt by this gas crunch and when you talk about blue collar people, this is really bad. It’s permeating ev-erything, and music is certainly a luxury. “The release schedule is having some effect,” Dungan continues. “And some of the really big releases aren’t performing as well as the last release. The days of selling five or six million copies may be over. When Carrie Underwood and Rascal Flatts did that, it gave every-body hope, but that may not be realistic anymore.” Galante agrees. “We’re at 2.2 million on Carrie and we just finished the second single,” he says. “I’m thinking we

on one disc they could play in the car. Now, they already own the hits and if they want the new tracks they can download them individually.” As technological and economic forces contort the business model, the country industry is best served focusing on what it can control. “This has to be about continuing to grow new things, otherwise we’re a gold-based format and that hurts every-thing,” Galante says. “We have to find those things that move the sales needle.” “The next two years will be very challenging, but I’m bull-ish,” McCarn says. “We’re still making great music and have challenges to face with how consumers purchase it, but a hit sin-gle still motivates people to buy music. The business is chang-ing, but the fundamentals haven’t.” Ultimately, a clear view of the next business model may simply be impossible considering the rapidity with which these changes are shaping the industry. “If you think you knew every-thing last year,” Galante says, “welcome to the new world.”

Jeff Bates Jeff Bates (Black River) Bates helms the first release for Black River Music Group, which is produced by Mickey Jack Cones, Kenny Beard and Jimmy Nichols. The album’s lead single is “Don’t Hate Me For Loving You,” which Bates co-wrote along with nine of the disc’s other 13 songs. Other titles include “I

Can’t Have Nothing Nice,” “Riverbank” and “My Wave.”

Jypsi Jypsi (Arista) Released to online music stores in advance of the May 27 physical street date, Jypsi’s self-titled debut features sibling band mates Lillie Mae, Frank, Scarlett and Amber-Dawn. The 12-song collection is produced by Blake Chancey and includes “Love Is A Drug,” “I Don’t

Love You Like That,” “Stray Dogs and Alley Cats” and “Free.”

James Otto Sunset Man (Warner Bros./Raybaw) Otto co-produced his Warner Bros. debut with John Rich (eight tracks) and Jay DeMarcus (three cuts). He wrote or co-wrote nine of 11 cuts, including current top 5 single “I Just Got Started Loving You.” Other songs: “Ain’t Gonna Stop,” “These Are The Good Ole Days” and the St. Jude

Children’s Research Hospital-inspired “Where Angels Hang Around.”

can hit triple platinum and probably better than that in this environment. When I presented Carrie her plaque for seven million [copies sold of Some Hearts], I told her I don’t think anyone will beat this in my lifetime. I just don’t know how you sell seven million units.” Another concern is the erosion of a perennial profit center “In the past, those of us who owned masters have looked for the greatest hits payday,” Dungan says. “You could throw out a hits record with a few new tracks because people wanted everything

These are the new weights for Country Aircheck/Mediabase Country Reporters. The weights are calculated by this formula: Market rank is multiplied by 10 and then added to the station’s AQH Persons. A station’s weight is determined by dividing that adjusted AQH by the leading Country station’s adjusted AQH. For the Fall 2007 Abritron ratings period, that station is WUSN/Chicago with an adjusted AQH of 33,030. Station Weight = (Market rank X 10) divided by 33,030.

These new weights are effective with this week’s Country Aircheck/Mediabase Country chart
