Program Notes

On April 6, 1759, just eight days before he died, Handel appeared in public for the last time, blind and partially paralyzed by a series of strokes, to attend London’s annual performance of his Messiah. Not a year has passed without a performance of it since. But Messiah was an exception – a landmark almost at once and loved more than any other piece of vocal music by generation after generation.

Most of us associate Handel’s Messiah with Christmas, or perhaps with Advent, the season of preparation for Christmas. But, in truth, Handel did not write the Messiah as a piece of Christmas music. We know this for a couple of reasons. First, if you pay close attention to the words of the Messiah in the libretto (the text of the music) written by Charles Jennens, you’ll discover that only the rst part of the composition has to do with the birth of Jesus. e second and third parts focus on his death, resurrection, the sending of the Spirit at Pentecost, and the nal resurrection of all believers.

Second, the rst performance of the Messiah occurred, not during Advent or Christmas, but in Eastertide. Handel’s masterpiece was rst performed in Dublin on April 13, 1742, 19 days after Easter. is was surely no accident. If Handel had envisioned the Messiah as a piece for Christmas, it would have been introduced in that season. Although you may be familiar with the Messiah, it oers many surprises if you carefully examine the libretto. For one thing, the lyrics of this piece are entirely from the Bible (though in a few spots Jennens paraphrased the Authorized Version). For another, though the story of Jesus is a New Testament narrative, the majority of the words in the Messiah come from the Old Testament. Moreover, the key events – the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus – are not told with New Testament texts, but with prophetic passages from the Old Testament.

For centuries, people have loved Handel’s Messiah, and for good reason. In fact, a reviewer of the rst perfor-mance of this piece wrote, “e sublime, the grand, and the tender, adapted to the most elevated, majestic and moving words, conspired to transport and charm the ravished heart and ear.” Now that’s some review!

e choir and instrumentalists present today selected recitatives, arias and choruses from Part II; e Passion of Christ. While Part I is certainly the most familiar section of this work, this season of Lent has been a time of repentance, fasting and preparation for the coming of Easter. e music today takes you not only through Christ’s suering and grief, and the sorrow of rejection he bore, but also shows us how Christ willingly took the journey to the cross to complete His Father’s will and oer us eternal life.

Bishop Sue Haupert Johnson has announced projected appointments for Oak Grove’s clergy. Glenn and Amy are projected to return to Oak Grove. Susan Allen Grady is projected to become senior pastor of Embry Hills United Methodist Church. Oak Grove expresses deep gratitude for Susan’s service to our church. Under her leadership with invitation and discipleship, our church has continued to welcome new members, and the church has developed a small group ministry involving 200-300 people. More than that Susan has been a faithful leader and preacher, and we express our sincere appreciation for her service. SPR will host an appropriate farewell for her; please watch for more details.

On Good Friday, join Mercy Community Church (Oak Grove’s Mobile Soup Kitchen mission partner) for an urban Way of the Cross in the city. We will read the passion narrative from the Gospel of John as we journey together through the streets, connecting moments from Jesus' passion with the suering our homeless sisters and brothers continue to experience today. We will have a picnic lunch at 11 a.m. and begin the walk at noon, both in Freedom Park (behind Moe's). Contact Virginia Sowell ([email protected]) for more information.

Prayer Labyrinths serve as an aid to contemplative prayer and reection. Labyrinths used for prayer are spiritual exercises that are a form of pilgrimage (dierent from games or mazes). Oak Grove will have a prayer labyrinth in our church parlor during Holy Week, Monday, April 10 – 14. We invite you to walk and pray through the labyrinth at your convenience. Printed materials will be available to guide you. A nger labyrinth will be available for those who prefer to sit rather than walk. Come and experience God’s presence through this ancient form of spiritual discipline.
