Reflecting on God’s Word NOT WHAT WAS EXPECTED Have you ever waited for something for so long you began to think it might never happen? Your graduation day, or the day of your marriage, or the birth of a child, perhaps. The Israelites had waited for centuries for the coming of the Messiah. Yet when Jesus, the long-awaited Anointed One came, many failed to believe in him. He wasn’t what they expected. The Messiah was supposed to be a strong, powerful commander of armies, not humble, compassionate, and suffering. After his resurrection, Jesus appeared to the disciples and explained all that he had said in his time with them, opening their minds to what had been written in the scriptures so that they could accept his suffering and death and rejoice in his resurrection.

GOD’S LOVE IN FLESH AND BONE While the disciples had come to believe that Jesus was the Messiah, his crucifixion and death had left them fearful and confounded. The news of the empty tomb and his appearance to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus added to their confusion. It seems that at first, Jesus’ presence with them did not alleviate their uncertainty. In fact, they were “startled and terrified and thought they were seeing a ghost” (Luke 24:37). Jesus saw that they needed physical proof that it was he who stood among them. They needed to see the nail marks in his hands and feet, to see God’s love in flesh and bone, in one who ate among them. Only when their fear and confusion had been quelled could they hear the story, the sacred story of how the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead. Only when they were filled with the peace of Christ would they be ready to witness, to share the sacred story with others. We, too, are invited to hear the sacred story and to perceive God’s love for us in Jesus Christ. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

INTENTIONAL DISCIPLES - ICONS OF GOD “Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’ But they were startled and

frightened…” - LUKE 24:36-37 Throughout the day we have many opportunities to “see the face of Jesus” in others and to “be the face of Jesus” to others. Do we take that opportunity to provide “peace” to those we encounter or are we afraid of what others will think of us and do nothing? Pray for the strength and courage to live a “God-centered” life and not a “self-centered” life.

Diocesan Services Fund (DSF) 2021

The Diocesan Services Fund (DSF) supports 60+ programs benefitting 1.7 million Catholics in our Archdiocese as well as St. Cyril. These essential

ministries & services no single parish could ever possibly fund on its own. Below are a small sample of the programs you support.

San José Clinic

Did you know? In 2018, San Jose Clinic served 3,762 patients resulting in a total of 30,548 patient visits! The clinic provides high-quality health care

and health education to low-income and uninsured individuals and families.

Office of Vocations The word vocation comes from a Latin word, which means "a call".

The Office of Vocations journeys with men and women who are called to the priesthood and religious life. With the support of DSF, the office offers resources, retreats, prayer experiences, and guidance to all who are called

to holiness.

Angela House Women are learning how to grow spiritually with faith, hope, and love at Angela House. Since 2001, this DSF ministry has served as a resource for women exiting incarceration. Re-entry is never easy, but Angela House provides a safe place to live with services to help obtain employment,

self-sufficiency, and independent living.

Catholic Chaplain Corps The Catholic Chaplain Corps served over 122,00 patients at specific

hospitals within the Medical Center last year. The Catholic Chaplain Corps provides strong support for the aged, sick, and dying through a network of

well-formed and skilled Pastoral Visitors.

Office of Hispanic Ministry Faithful to the principles, values and teachings of the Catholic Church, the Office of Hispanic Ministry observes, listens, and discerns the needs of the

Hispanic community. Help support the Office of Hispanic Ministry as it promotes inclusion and seeks to increase awareness about the richness of

ethnic and cultural diversity in our diocese.

Office of Aging The Office of Aging Ministry recognizes the gifts and needs of senior adults and responds with resources and programs to enhance these years of their

lives. The office is called to share the Christian belief in the value and importance of family life at each stage that it is lived.
