Surprise, Surprise: The Board has pased a motion to present to the membership “A dues increase”. It has been almost five years since the last due in-crease and inflation; deferred maintenance and fi-nancing of dock replacement requires money. Items such as painting of clubhouse (inside and out), floor coverings, hardwood floors, furniture, sewage pumps, etc., need to be addressed. Esti-mated cost is in the $25,000 to $40,000 range.

Dock replacement to meet the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers require-ments is in the $75,000 to $100,000 range. Other items such as paving of lots and grading and shaping top of hill are additional costs, amount unknown. SEA SCOUT NEWS Andy and Cathy Griswold

Sea Scout News April 2002 Well the winter series is over and now it’s time for things to slow down. Yeah Right! Now we kick into high gear getting ready for spring and summer activities. Between now and the end of the school year the kids have to raise an additional $4,000 to pay for our summer trip to the Apostle Islands on Lake Superior. At this point we are chartering two boats. A Cal 34 and a Pearson 34. The Cal will be the girls boat and the Pearson the boys boat. Why! Because there are 6 girls and 7 boys going. The Cal sleeps 6 and the Pearson 7. My but that’s a lot of people on each boat. But the cost of adding an-other boat or two just gets to high and more adults would be needed. We are scheduled to leave Nash-ville Saturday July 6th. We’ll spend Sunday night on the boats at the dock. After getting checked out on Monday morning we will head east into the islands. There are 22 or 23 islands in the area. Of those islands 21 are in a national park under the term of a ‘National Lakeshore’. There looks to be a lot of interesting places to visit and explore. I only wish we had more than 4 days in which to do it. We will be back either late Friday the 12th or early Saturday the 13th. So between now and then we have our hands full. There will be fund raisers, and more fund raisers. Additionally we have a lot of skills to be working on. Although most of the kids have sailed for a while, we still have a couple with only one or two sails under their belts. We also have several newer scouts that have never stayed overnight on a boat. Plus navigation in an unfamiliar area is something that only three of the current scouts have done. Where to start? We need to do at least one over-nighter and we need some skills de-velopment sessions. Although I be-lieve I can teach them most if not all the skills needed for the trip, the kids are going to become tired of listen-ing to me all the time. I need some-one that can teach navigation in an evening session and then put it to use on the water. We will also need sessions for things like anchoring, working with different types of fuel and stoves, water system basics and who knows what other cruising skills I’m forgetting.

5 AAAPRILPRILPRIL , 2002 , 2002 , 2002

So, as you can see, we need your help. Not only for the fundraisers but also for skills sessions. Please be open to allowing the scouts to work for you to earn money (some are really good with

teak work and basic repairs) and to providing assistance even for an hour or two in the afternoon to teach skills. I can tell you from first hand experience that the teacher learns more than the student.

So hopefully we'll see you out at the lake having your boat washed, purchasing lunches, buying nautical items and assisting in teaching skills.

Another way you can help? On April 6 the Scouts are planning another nautical yard/consignment

sale. If you have something that you would like to donate or put on consignment to sell, please call us at 883-8451. Also, don't forget to come by that morning and see what goodies that we have

that you just can't do without. Another opportunity for assistance is to purchase your lunches for the Tennessean Open on the weekend of 4/21-22. And, last but not least, if you would like to be

sure that your boat will go fast for the regatta (everybody but Ballard-he doesn't need any more help going fast) the Scouts will be glad to wash your boat (topside and the keel).

Laser Fleet Frostbiting Week 8 Nashville rolled out it's finest. A 60+ degree day with 8-12 from the south. One of Rob's ole buddies Larry Broviak did the RC honors with a hand from Wade Thweet (who has turned into a regular). Bruce Rich-ards made an appearance, and even though he didn't rewrite the book, as he has done in past years, he was happy to win two races. Joe came down from Lou'ville, but couldn't start well and went home empty. Chip was his stellar self, I had to hit him in the fourth race to preserve a first. The left paid, while the right bailed Chip out twice. Mike port tacked the fleet once, then the RC made the line shorter to keep us honest. Dennis showed some style winning the last race and had a solid second in the second. Tom Gillingham saved his best for last and finished third in the finale. Alas, David's handicap put him out of reach. He gets the title by four points. In thirty-three races, ten points separated the top four boats. This is the best series in town. Those that raced are the better for it. Make your mind up to do it next year. You'll miss a few football games, but hey, this is life. hof

Women Aboard is an International Association for Women In Boating. Tennessee and Alabama Women Aboard have gotten together to for a chapter that will serve not only TN and AL, but also Georgia, Kentucky, and Arkansas. We meet 4 times a year, to promote interest, safety through learning, and commaradarie. Each meeting is in a different location, to allow more women (and their spouses, if they so desire) to attend meetings.

On April 13, I will be hosting the new Chapter meeting at the club house. We will begin about noon with a potluck lunch, have a brief “official” meeting and fun after. There will be information available, to introduce you to WA. There is a website ( http://womenaboard.com/ ) you can visit for more in-formation – or to join.

I noticed many burgee’s flying in the club house while attending the recent seminar presented by North Sails. I will be presenting my WA burgee to the club (if they are interested in it), flown for a little over a year, in San Diego Harbor, where I met several Women Aboard – because I was flying the burgee.

Please join us at our April meeting. I look forward to meeting you all – and the many Women Aboard in the Nash-ville and surrounding area.

The Adventures of LE CEIL

Hello to everyone at HIYC. Ceile rejoined Le Ciel on the 4th of Feb. in St. Martin. After a few days there, we headed south to St. Statia where we spent a rolly night at anchor. The next day we sailed to Basseterre, St. Kitts. After a restful night in Port Zante, we headed to Mt. Liamuiga, a 3792' volcano. The locals call it Mt. Misery, which we understood after a 3 hr. scramble up its slippery and rocky slopes. What a beautiful view. On one side was miles of ocean, on the other a 700' deep crater...I think God lives in places like this. On the 10th we anchored in White House Bay, and the next night at Majors Bay. After returning to Basseterre to clear customs, we sailed back to Statia. On the way we watched as a pod of whales jumped clear out of the water and came down in an increadible display. The anchorage was still rolly, but acceptable. Ceile saw her first "Green Flash" here. This was Valen-tine's Day so I took Ceile out to a local restaurant, Kings Well. Win(German) and his wife, Laura(British) open their home/hotel to sailors and hotel guests only. The bar is on the honor system (you write down what you drink) and the menu is whatever Win cooks (BBQ ribs and grilled grouper that night). The food was great and we drank toooo much, but had a great time. (The next day was spent in recovery). On the 16th, we headed to St. Maarten to reprovision for our trip to the BVI's. We had an unusually calm passage to Anguilla on the 19th where we anchored in Road Bay. Anigulla is a quiet place with few accomoda-tions. After a couple of days, we departed the afternoon of the 22nd for a 17 hr. off the wind reach to Spanish Town, Virgin Gorda. After two days there, we stopped in at The Baths for some snorkeling, on our way to Cooper Island, where we anchored in Haul Over Bay. The BVI's are beautiful, but crowded; beaucoup of charter-boat traffic.

Bernard Moitessier, a french sailor, said in his poetic book "The Long Way," "I found a little temple from forgotten times, lost in the faraway forest. I stayed near it a long time, all by myself, to learn to read the marks carved on the stone. Nothing was left of what I had brought, and I lived on roots and wild honey, staying near the temple for as long as it took to find out. And little by little the stone gave forth a name that said go on and seek truth inside of things....further on." The winter in Tennessee is for armchair sailors to plan for the summer, try someplace further on....you might find some truth there.

From the editor: (now marginally less reluctant) Little by little it seems that I am getting this gig figured out. Many thanks to everyone who has helped along the way, especially Patti Miller. I was a bit surprised that there were no letters this month on the proxy issue. We should be sure to bring this issue to a conclusion. I am sure there will be many strong feelings about the proposed dues increase. From my point of view we do not have a choice. We have been taking much more out of the club assets than we have been putting back for some time now. The dues increase that is proposed will only get us our current expense level. We need to start a much more ag-

gressive maintenance program or we will pay a much bigger price down the road. One way we can minimize the cost of maintenance is to do more of the work ourselves (as was done in years past). If we committed our-selves to replace the causeway docks (for example) with an internal work detail we could get this project done for much less than to have it contracted out. If we do not “step up to the plate” now we will do the next generation of HIYC sailors a great injustice.
