A�General Selection (April Enrollment) Information on Application for the GSID Doctoral Program for the Academic Year 2012. �
1. Application Requirements Those who meet one or more of the following qualifications are eligible to apply: (1) Hold a Master’s degree or Professional degree from a Japanese University or will
receive a Master’s degree or Professional degree from a Japanese University by the end of March, 2012.
(2) Have received a degree equivalent to a Master’s degree or Professional degree in a country other than Japan or will receive one by the end of March, 2012.
(3) Have received a degree equivalent to a Master’s degree or Professional degree in Japan through correspondence education managed by a foreign school or other recognized educational institution or will receive one by the end of March, 2012.
(4) Have received a Master’s degree or Professional degree from a university in Japan that is recognized as a university belonging to the system of higher education of a foreign country and is approved by the Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology or will receive one by the end of March, 2012.
(5) Have completed the course of the United Nations University and have received a degree equivalent to a Master’s degree, or will have completed the course of the United Nations University and will have received a degree equivalent to a Master’s degree by the end of March, 2012. The United Nations University refers the university established by the United Nations General Assembly’s resolution of December 11, 1972. The university is provided for under Paragraph 2 of Article 1 of the Act on Special Measures (Law No. 72, 1976) concerning the Implementation of the Agreement between the United Nations and Japan relating to the Headquarters of the United Nations University.
(6) Have been approved by the Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Ministry notice No.118 of 1989).
�Those who after graduation from university spent at least 2 years researching at the university level or at a research facility and have been recognized by GSID as having academic ability equal to those who have a Master’s degree.�
(7) Have been recognized by GSID based on individual eligibility screening for the examination as having academic abilities equal to those who have a Master’s degree or Professional degree, and of an age not less than 24 by the end of March, 2012.

3. Filing Period Applications will be accepted from 9:00 to 16:00 during the period of January 6 (Friday)
to January 12 (Thursday), 2012 (except for Saturday, Sunday and Monday) at the Educational Affairs Division for the Schools of Humanities and Social Sciences (GSID administrative office). For those sending applications by (registered) mail, applications MUST reach the office by 16:00 on January 12, 2012. ANY applications received after this date and time will not be considered for processing.
4. Required Documents
Applicants must fill out and send in the following items. Please type or write clearly using black ink. Those who fall under category (6) or (7) in the Application Requirements must refer to note (2) or (3) of section5, Application Procedures.
(1) Application Form (Form provided) (2) Curriculum Vitae/Resume (Form provided) (3) On a separate piece of paper (A4) please state your previous working and/or research
experience, if any, relevant to the field of international development. The length should be either 2,000 characters in Japanese or 800 words in English. DID/DICOS applicants should submit 3 copies and DICOM applicants should submit 4 copies.
(4) Photograph Card, Examinee’s Registration Card and Receipt Forms: Attach photo (4cm×5cm) taken within the last 3 months. Please write your name on the two Receipt Forms (Forms provided).
(5) Self-addressed Envelopes: Please use the two envelopes provided in this pamphlet, with stamps worth 360 yen attached to each. If Japanese stamps are not available, please send instead 6 International Return Coupons which are available at post offices.

(9) Official transcripts from your previous/present graduate school. (10) Certificate of Master’s degree, or Certificate of Prospective Master’s degree issued by
your present graduate school. (11) Research Proposal: Written in Japanese (4,000 characters) or in English (1,600 words),
on A4 sized paper. 3 copies for DID/DICOS applicants and 4 copies for DICOM applicants.
(12) Master’s Thesis/Research Thesis and its Abstract: 3 copies for DID/DICOS applicants and 4 copies for DICOM applicants. �If at the time of application you have not yet completed your Master’s thesis, send a
summary of your thesis instead (either 4,000 characters in Japanese or 1,600 words in English), together with a letter from the Dean of your graduate school or from your academic supervisor which states the deadline of the thesis. Afterwards, you need to submit your completed thesis and its summary (3 copies for DID/DICOS applicants and 4 copies for DICOM applicants) by January 27 (Friday).
� If your Master’s degree is from a field other than your proposed field of study, or if you have published papers which are related to the field, you can submit copies of your published papers in addition to copies of your Master’s Thesis.
(13) Applicants without Japanese nationality must submit a photocopy of the page of their valid passport showing the passport number and the applicant’s photograph. Those applicants who are currently residing in Japan must also submit a photocopy of their Alien Registration Card (both sides).
(14) A photocopy of certificate of English or Japanese language proficiency (submission is optional).
If you are an employee of an organization, you are requested to submit a letter of con-
sent from the head of your organization or, in place of that, a letter of self-responsibility after you have passed the examination.

5. Application Procedures Items (1)-(14) should be completed and submitted to the Educational Affairs Division for the Schools of Humanities and Social Sciences (GSID administrative office). In addition to these documents an examination fee of 30,000 yen is required (non-refundable). In Japan, please use a Japanese Postal Money Order but Do Not fill in anything.
� �Those who will receive a Master’s degree in March, 2012 from Nagoya University and wish to apply to the GSID Doctoral Program do not need to pay this fee.
The students funded by the Japanese government (�Monbukagakusho scholarship students�) do not need to pay the examination fee either. Such students need to submit the certificate of their scholarship unless they are currently enrolled in Nagoya University.

(1) For those who will receive their Master’s degree in March, 2012 from GSID, only items (1), (2), (4)-(6) and (11) are necessary for application. However, those who apply to a different department of GSID are required to� submit (12) too.

B. Special Selection Enrollment Program for DID and DICOS Applicants with Relevant Work Experience (April Enrollment)
In order to provide persons with substantial work experience in the field of international development/cooperation an opportunity to deepen and systematize their knowledge, the Department of International Development (DID) and the Department of International Cooperation Studies (DICOS)of the Graduate School of International Development (GSID), Nagoya University offer a special selection option for enrollment in the doctoral program.
1. Application Requirements Those who meet all of the following qualifications are eligible to apply: � Currently employed
(excluding those currently on leave) at an organization which conducts international development or cooperation focused activities and/or research, and have three or more years of work experience in such an organization, � Have received a recommendation from the applicant’s current employer, � Have received written acceptance from a professor in the Department of International Development (DID) or the Department of International Cooperation (DICOS) to supervise the applicant’s research, � Have desirably acquired an official TOEFL-iBT score� of 79 points or more (only DICOS applicants), � Have published at least one academic article, and meet one of the following conditions: (1) Hold a Master’s degree or Professional degree from a Japanese University. (2) Have received a degree equivalent to a Master’s degree or Professional degree in a country other
than Japan. (3) Have received a degree equivalent to a Master’s degree or Professional degree in Japan through
correspondence education managed by a foreign school or other recognized educational institution. (4) Have received a Master’s degree or Professional degree from a university in Japan that is
recognized as a university belonging to the system of higher education of a foreign country and is approved by the Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
(5) Have completed the course of the United Nations University and have received a degree equivalent to a Master’s degree. The United Nations University refers the university established by the United Nations General Assembly’s resolution of December 11, 1972. The university is provided for under Paragraph 2 of Article 1 of the Act on Special Measures (Law No. 72. 1976) concerning the Implementation of the Agreement between the United Nations and Japan relating to the Headquarters of the United Nations University.
(6) Have been approved by the Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Ministry Notice No. 118 of 1989)
Persons who after graduation from university, or after 16 years of formal education, have spent at least 2 years engaged in research at a university or research institute and, on the basis of that research, have been recognized by GSID as having academic ability equal to or exceeding those holding a Master’s degree.
(7) Have been recognized by GSID, based on individual eligibility screening for the examination, as having academic ability equal to or exceeding those holding a Master’s degree, and are aged not less than 25 years by the end of March 2012.
Applicants for the special selection program are not allowed to simultaneously apply for the General Selection.

6. Selection Process
Selection will be carried out on the basis of documents submitted.
7. Announcement of Examination Results
� (1) Date: Tuesday, February 14, 2012, 14:00. NO TELEPHONE INQUIRIES.
� (2) Location: Entrance hall of the GSID building.
� (3) Notification: Official letters of admission will also be sent out by postal mail after the
announcement.
8. Entrance Registration Procedures
Details will be sent out at a later date.

� (4) To obtain the Application Guidebook and Forms and the GSID Catalog, please send a letter to the
Educational Affairs Division for the Schools of Humanities and Social Sciences (GSID administrative
office) requesting the 2012 Doctoral Program Application Guidebook and Forms (April Enrollment)
and the GSID Catalog. Please enclose a self-addressed 32 cm × 24 cm envelope, with a 390 yen stamp
attached(or, for applicants living outside Japan, 6 International Return Coupons).
� (5) Applicant’s name, mailing address and other personal information included in application
documents will be used only for the purpose of grading and registering during the entrance
examination selection process, announcement of examination results, entrance registration
procedures and educational affairs after admission. Personal information will be used appropriately
