PRINCIPAL’S PAGE Dear Coebourn Families,

Students have been doing a phenomenal job with reading counts. Continue to challenge your child to read every night to help them obtain their reading goals. There is a close race of which homeroom will have the most words read.

Students in grades 3-5 have done an exceptional job coming to school ready to give their best on the Reading and Math PSSA's. On April 7th, fifth grade students will begin the Writing PSSA assessments. On April 30th, fourth grade students will begin the Science PSSA assessments. Please continue sending your child to school with a good night sleep and a healthy breakfast.

FOURTH GRADE The fourth graders were introduced to the Passport to History

program. They learned about historical sites in Delaware County and will visit and learn more about our county's history

throughout the remainder of the school year. In April, we will even get to "dig into" history by learning about archeology

and artifacts of our history.

The fifth graders were also awarded certificates for their completion of last year’s program.

THIRD GRADE Third grade is in the process of writing their

research papers for Living History Museum. We are

taking the information we gathered while reading

the biographies and we are filling out graphic

organizers. The graphic organizers will then be used

to write our rough drafts. Rough drafts turn into

final copies then the final copies into speeches. We

will be spending the next month writing and then

memorizing for our big day! We are learning more

and more about our historical figures every day and

look forward to presenting and sharing our

information on May 15th

Miss Naylor’s Class

The 2nd grade students have been working on

double digit subtraction. We are continuing to work

on reading with fluency, phrasing and expression as

well as story structure and restating back the

questions in guided reading. The 3rd and 4th grade

students in Miss Naylor's room have been gearing up

for the PSSA tests and learning some great test

taking strategies such as UNRAAVEL and FAST

charts. We enjoyed reading some selections from

Mary Poppins and using our visualizing strategy!

SECOND GRADE This month is a very Egg-citing month in

second grade. On April 1st we will receive

8 chick eggs from the 4-H farm in

Newtown Square. We will study

embryology using the eggs for a hands on

experience. The children will mother the

eggs until they hatch into baby chicks.

Then on April 10th we will celebrate the

birth of our new fluffy friends with an

Egg-Stravaganza and to say goodbye. In

math we will be diving into three digit

addition and subtraction. We are ready

for the challenge! Lastly, in writing we are

working in groups on informational

pieces. Each group will research different

kinds of animals and present their

information to the other groups.

FIRST GRADE

First grade is SPRINGing into a new season! Recently, our first graders went on a field trip to the Franklin Mint Credit Union. We had a blast at Bear County and learned all about being responsible with our money.

Students loved writing pretend checks, looking in a real vault, and pretending to be bank tellers. The first grade is looking forward to many more exciting adventures this year!

eagerly brought their idea of creating an SPCA donation event to Mr. Kuminka. Mr. K was more than happy to oblige the girls and the donations began to pour in. Coebourn students were very

generous in donating supplies to help the animals in need at the SPCA.

iPads ~ Technology in Hand

Small yet so useful! When you look into the elementary classrooms you will see teachers and students using iPads

to discover, enrich, practice… endless possibilities. In the primary grades, the teachers meet with small groups of students

for reading instruction. The iPad can provide a viewing screen for a short video, building background for the topic of the

text. The teacher can connect this device to the white board in the classroom and move about the room freely while moving

the slides forward on the screen. It also affords the teacher access to e-books which can be used as read alouds with the

whole class. Moving into the intermediate grades, the teachers are using the i-pad as a video and voice recording device. For

example, students can record an oral presentation and then play it back to revise or edit before presenting to the class or the

student can read a selection aloud and replay it to check accuracy and fluency. The iPad is used in these classrooms for

research as well. Some of the students have had experience with iMovie trailers in social studies and making tutorial videos

in math for their classmates to use for review of skills.

Learning centers are part of the literacy block everyday in the elementary classrooms. The center that uses the i-Pad

is one of the students’ favorites. Practice is important for the development of skills in math and reading. The apps for the

iPad provide engaging practice with math facts, phonics, word building, and grammar. You will see Grammaropolis, ABC

Soup, Pop Lite Math, and Spelling City displayed on the screen and ready to go! The iPad can provide differentiated

practice for individuals or pairs of students.

In middle school science classrooms, 7th grade students have explored the cell and genetics using interactive apps

and 8th graders use iPads for research assignments and to create QR (barcodes on products) challenges. Taking and

compiling pictures of their plant’s development allows students to develop a digital story that can be shared with their peers.

In math classes, students create videos that explain a concept and model procedures. These videos can be used for review

by their peers. They also use iPads to research websites that reinforce and expand their learning. The Communications

classes are very busy with their iPads. The students are making movie trailers, news reports, and interactive interviews.

They are finding creative ways to produce new material!

Some of our special education students need support with verbal communication. They use iPads to participate in

discussions and answer questions. Others use them to interact with their peers, and complete assignments in My Big

Campus. Collaboration is supported by using this technology.

The iPad is small in size but the potential for its use in the classroom by teachers and students is enormous!

NOTES FROM THE NURSE Kids Need Exercise

Kids playing outside and being physically active IS exercise. Studies have shown that if a child is physically active for at least 1 hour a day that child will:

Have stronger bones and muscles Have a leaner body and help control body fat Be less likely to become overweight Have improved self esteem and self confidence

Create a life-long habit of physical activity

Additionally studies have shown that kids who are physically fit sleep better and are better able to handle physical and emotional challenges. Now that nicer weather is upon us and the days are longer, won’t you please kick your child off the computer, off the video games, turn off the TV and send them outside to play!! Think: for every 15 minutes of stationary computer, video and TV time, your child needs 15 minutes of physical activity.

COEBOURN’S WONDERWALL

FUTURE MARATHON RUNNER….

Jimmy Gray, from Miss Lydon's first grade

class, ran the Sunshine Run in Brookhaven. He

ran the entire 5K race,

finishing in 29th place with a time of 33:03

Jimmy placed 2nd in his age division:

1-14 year old males.

Way to go, Jimmy!!

AND THEY BOWL TOO!

Mrs. Roe, Miss Murray, Miss Sullivan, Miss Kuhn, Miss Lydon, Miss Snyder and Mr. John

represented Coebourn Elementary at the Penn-Delco Education Association’s annual bowling competition.

The “Coebourn Rockers” knocked down the most pins beating out the other schools

in the district to bring home the trophy!!

TEACHERS ON THE RUN

On Sunday, March 30, 2014 Ms. Murray, Ms. Naylor, and Ms. Runge participated in the COEBOURN’S VERY OWN HISTORIAN Philadelphia Half Marathon. They began training in January during the "polar vortex" running miles Early this year, Mrs. Carroll was after school and on the weekends. They ran through the awarded with the Susan Lucas Award wind and rain on Sunday to complete the 13.1 miles. by the Delaware County Historical Society. Congratulations ladies! This award is given to teachers who make Great job promoting a healthy lifestyle for our students! “History Come Alive” in the classroom.
