Paying Taxes?!!
It is usually at this time of year you hear folks say, “Is it right for a faithful Christian to pay taxes to a faithless government? We are supposed to be good stewards of all God has given to us. So, would He want our tax money going to a government that supports abortions, is involved in foreign wars which have nothing to do with us, etc.???!”
As bad as some things are our government does, it is nothing when compared to the godless Roman government of the 1st Century. The religious leaders, in their efforts to eliminate Jesus, came to Him, saying, “Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar?” (Mark 12:14). This was a trap! For if Jesus answered, “Yes,” the multitude would turn away from Him. But if He said, “No,” these rulers would accuse Him of sedition and He would be put to death by the Romans! (In spite of what He said, they tried to do this anyway, see Luke 23:1-2!)
But Jesus avoided their trap in such a masterful way that even non-believers are familiar with His words. For He responded to their question, saying, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s,” (v. 17). “Government” is a divinely ordained institution, (see Romans 13:1-2). Thus, if it has imposed a tax, then God expects His people to pay. However, like individuals, governments don’t always do what is right before God. Yet also like individuals, it is the government that will be held responsible for its choices, and not those who obediently pay their taxes.
Since God has ordained the government, Paul says, “…because of this you also pay taxes, for rulers are servants of God, devoting themselves to this very thing. Render to all what is due them: tax to whom tax is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor,” (vs. 6-7).
Today we live in a democratically-elected republic. In it we have both
responsibilities (taxes, etc.) and privileges (voting, etc.) available to us. Let us, therefore, use the latter to accomplish what needs to be done in regards to the former. Yet as Christians we are under a dual-citizenship.
Besides living in this country, we are also part of a wonderful monarchy under the rule of our King, Jesus! The first may determine what’s in our wallet, but the other determines what’s in our heart! As Paul wrote, “For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we eagerly await a
Savior,” (Philippians 3:20). Rick Walker

The Arms of Jesus
Have you ever had an occasion when you felt like you needed someone to confide in, to seek their opinion. A time when you needed to make sure that you were headed in the right direction and to gain peace of mind for yourself. Yes, we all have those whom we put our trust in. From the time we come into this life, we are in need of crutches along the way. We need advice, instruction, and help in various situations. We get this from various sources: parents, brothers/sisters, aunts/uncles, and friends. All of these
are good.
I am reminded of the song written by E.A. Hoffman, “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms.” “What a fellowship, what a joy
divine, Leaning on the everlasting arms. What a blessedness, what a peace is mine, Leaning on the everlasting arms. O how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way, Leaning on the everlasting arms. O how brite the path grows from day to day, Leaning on the everlasting arms. What have I to dread, what have I to fear, Leaning on the everlasting arms. I have blessed peace with my Lord so near, Leaning on the everlasting arms. Safe and secure from all alarms; Leaning on the everlasting arms.”
When it comes to our soul salvation, whose arms do we want to fall into, to enclose us with all His love, and to whisper, “Peace sweet peace.” There are 7 things here that E.A. Hoffman writes about that are essential and necessary in our Christian walk with God and His Son, Jesus Christ.
Joy divine: Jesus spoke a parable in Matthew 25:14-29. This man was traveling into a far country. He had three
servants. He gave 5 talents to one, 2 talents to another, and one talent to another. The men with the 5 and 2 talents went out and doubled their talents. After a long time, the servants came and settled the accounts. Verses 21-23 say the same words, “I will make thee ruler over many things: enter Thou into the joy of the Lord.”
Peace: Philippians 4:7, “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds
through Christ Jesus.” We as God’s children should, be careful for nothing; be prayerful for everything; be thankful for
anything. The result of such confidence is peace. The revised version has it, “shall guard your hearts and your thoughts
in Christ Jesus.” Colossians 3:15 says “And let the peace of God rule in your hearts…”
How sweet to walk in His way: Ephesians 5: 1, 2, & 8, “1) Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; 2) walk
in love, as Christ also hath loved us and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling savior. 8) For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord, walk as children of light.”
The path grows brite from day to day: Perhaps the leading idea is that of holy gladness. This is to be enjoyed here
on earth in those pleasant ways and paths of peace through which wisdom leads her votaries. The Christian may be a martyr, but he need not be a victim of melancholy. They who do evil love the darkness that hides their deeds. Goodness
fears no exposure. Daniel could afford to let his habits public. Here is the source of the brightness like that of the dawn that reflects the sun’s beams. Christ shines on the soul, and it brightens under his love as the dark hills and darker valleys take on the colors of life before the rising sun. It is a shining light, a glistening light; not mere color, but radiance. The true Christian is a light of the world; it is his duty to let his light shine to the glory of God.
What have I to dread or fear: The man over whom God casts His shield is invulnerable. If God be for us, who can
be against us? No crafty foe can elude the vigilance of His eye; no subtle scheme can surprise His infinite mind; no strong antagonist can cope with His almighty arm. If he is our helper, man cannot injure us. If He is our Helper, our resources cannot fail. If He is our hope, we may pursue our life-path chanting cheerfully, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
I have blessed peace with my Lord so near: Philippians 4:7, “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding,
shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” God answers the prayer of anxiety with a gift of peace. This peace is given by God. It is a solid, deep, sure, true, lasting peace, quite different from any peace the world can give (John 14:27).
Safe and secure from all alarms: In ordinary life there must be much of sameness. The same duties, occupations,
interests, events occur from day to day. God is ever the same and works by His own divinely arranged laws. Our moods and our circumstances change but our Lord is the same yesterday, today and forever. Where would be our confidence if He were to change? Blessed to have an unchanging friend and an unchanging home, where there is rest amidst all the changes of our external lives.
All of these are made possible by leaning on the everlasting arms of Jesus. What a friend we have in Jesus.

Rick Walker’s Africa Trip
Update: While Rick took his
first trip to Africa this past
January with Ralph Williams,
he helped established a
School of Preaching while
there. He will be leaving on
May 31st (for 2 weeks) to be a
class Instructor (for 2
classes) at the School of
Preaching that was set up.
His airfare (which had to be
purchased in advance) was
$2250. He is very close to
reaching that amount thanks
to many of you. He will be
staying in a hotel while there
for two weeks and there will
be additional expenses for
that. If you want to still help
Rick, please make checks out
to him and he will send you a
letter for your donation for
tax purposes. Many thanks
for your support!
