Salvation: “Conditions” or “Basis”?
Chemical weapons in Syria? Nuclear Weapons in North Korea? Donald Trump in the White House? Are these truly the most important issues in the world today? (Well, you might think so if you watch any T.V.!) Yet I believe, and its not just because I’m a preacher, the most important issue facing the world, is where we will spend our eternity?! Saved or Lost – its just that simple. But how is a person saved?
Jews believed they were saved because of their obedience to the Law of God. In Leviticus 3-4, God tells His people how to present their peace offer ings & sin sacrifices. Six times God says their offering must be “without defect.” Seven times they are told to “lay his hand on the head” of the sacrifice, showing they were to identify with their sacrifice (i.e., they recognized they, not the animal,
should be the one who dies). Once they have met these conditions God says to them, “and he shall be forgiven.”
In the New Testament, people also placed their confidence in God’s word. We read where God tells us we need; to believe in Jesus (John 3:16; 8:24; etc.), repent of our sins (Luke 13:3, 5; Acts 17:30-31; etc.), confess our faith in Jesus (Romans 10:9-10; 1 Timothy 6:12), and be baptized for the forgiveness
of our sins (Acts 2:38; 22:1; 1 Peter 3:21; etc.). These are now His conditions for us.
Yet what those Jews and people today need to know is these conditions do not
save us! Or, to put it more plainly, doing these things is not the Basis for our salvation! In Hebrews 1:4, God says, “It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.” “But I thought God said it did?!!” In the same way, belief, repentance, confession, and baptism by themselves do not save us either. “Wait a minute! I can show you lots of verses that say they do!!!”
What I’m saying is that we need to focus first and foremost on the BASIS for our salvation! For no one would be saved (in either Testament) if Jesus had not died
on a cross for our sins! That is the BASIS for our salvation. Godly men of old got this, (see Psalm 51:16-17; Micah 6:6-8). On Pentecost, Peter only told the
people God’s conditions after he had told them the BASIS for forgiveness. “…you nailed [Jesus] to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death … Let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ this Jesus whom you crucified,” (Acts 2:23; 36). Once people
understand the BASIS for our forgiveness by seeing the greatness of God’s love
on the cross – then they will meet whatever conditions He chooses.
So where do you place your faith? In what you have done for Him or in what He did for you?!

“Beware of False Prophets”
By now everyone has probably heard the latest “Rapture” prediction, if not, be ready for tomorrow! Conspiracy theorists David Meade’s latest claims suggest that on April 23 2018 the sun, moon, and Jupiter will align in the constellation Virgo, sparking the beginning of the biblical Rapture.
He claims that on this night, the mysterious "death planet" Nibiru will appear in the sky, triggering the onset of World War 3, the rise of the Antichrist and seven years of Tribulation. Even NASA has dismissed Nibiru as fictional and remains an unproven entity. Of course this is not the first prediction by Meade. Meade previously predicted that October 15, 2017 would be the start of the tribulation.
It’s strange to me that someone can make these so called prophesies that will never come to pass and people will still believe them. A bunch of those followers are people that confess to be Christians. If they are truly Christians, wouldn’t they believe what Jesus says in Mark 13: 31-32, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away. But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” Then in 2 Peter 3:10-12, “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat?” When the end does come, 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9 says, “and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the
presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power.”
Scripture is very clear. Jesus told his followers to beware of false prophets, and that no man, angel, or even the Son will know the day or hour that the end will come. See you Wednesday night at worship!

Chuck Olliff will be with us next Sunday, April 29th at the
end of morning service with a video to explain about the plans
to build a new pavilion at Camp Red Oak Springs. It will be an
80’ X 100’ concrete slab with plenty of areas to play basketball,
volleyball, ping pong, as well as a canteen area and bathrooms.
The Camp Red Oak Board of Directors have decided to name
this pavilion after two of camp’s biggest influences and lifetime supporters: Hubert Franks
(Newton CoC congregation) and John Davis (Meadows CoC congregation). The Newton
congregation was part of the initial group who founded the camp and selected its current
location. John Davis served as President of the Board of Directors for many years as well as
the director for Session 5. Both of these men have a love for God, for God’s people, and for
each camper who has attended Camp Red Oak Springs. They have set
a groundbreaking day on November 10, 2018 to start this project.
Please plan on attending next weeks service to hear all details on
adding a new Franks/Davis Pavilion to Camp Red Oak Springs!
Jerald Bass holds Sunday Services at 2 different Senior Living Homes every Sunday. Please come

places could use more voices to help sing out!
Come every chance you get!
For Christ to live in us, our hearts have to be pure and holy (Matthew 5:8; Philippians 4:8). No one is perfect, but
we must strive to live up to the standards we teach others from Scripture.
There are two kinds of
people at church ~ those
who want to go home
early and those who want
to be the last one to leave.
The problem is that
they’re usually married
to each other.
The servant of the Lord is to be gentle, not gruff (2 Timothy 2:24). Instruction is to be given in meekness, not meanness. Satan loves harsh teachers, for they drive men in his direction and often harden hearts to the point that loving teachers have trouble getting through the scar tissue left behind. Speak the truth, but speak it in love (Ephesians 4:15). “A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city; and their connections are like the bars of a castle” (Proverbs 19:19).
