    2019 SUN 'n FUN Fly-In and Expo

is First in Fun - Fast in Flight! Each year, there are thoughtful

predictions from the regulars as to the

theme for the upcoming SUN ‘n FUN

    International Fly-In and Expo. When

those who go reflecting back on the

event’s 45 year history, they agree that

one thing has made it the second largest

aviation expo in the world –

    comradery. It’s the friendships,

    memories, and the experiences that

make it special. This year’s theme of

“First in Fun - Fast in Flight” celebrates

the people that have formed the

traditions, activities, and essence of the

    SUN ‘n FUN Fly-in.

The 45th annual SUN ‘n FUN

    International Fly-In and Expo takes

    place at the Lakeland Linder

    International Airport on April 2-7,

2019. There are over 500 exhibitors

    with hands-on high-tech experiences, a

giant STEM exposition and a Career

Fair. There is a 7-acre ramp and ½ mile

expanse of runway with dozens of

    military fighters and heavy aircraft,

plus four huge areas with hundreds of

    Warbirds, Golden Age, Homebuilt, and

    Light Sport aircraft.

Precision aerobatic flight is an awe-

inspiring sight; it’s almost religion. Ask

anyone that has attended SUN ‘n

    FUN, and they will immediately

    tell you their favorite airshow

    performer. The daily airshows

    consist of performers that push

    their aircraft to the limit,

challenging the craft to match their

    elite personal skills.

The fun doesn’t end at sunset, not

by a long shot! On Wednesday and

    Saturday, SUN ‘n FUN’s fan-fave

night airshows will light the night

    with dramatic performances.

    Just a Thought… By: Christine Wynne-Andrade Editor

It seems very quiet in Plant City this

month. Our snow bird friends and

neighbors have gone back up north and

the Strawberry Festival season is over.

    The 84th Annual Florida Strawberry

Festival ended March 10 with record

    breaking attendance. Nearly 563,000

visitors took part in concerts, livestock

    shows, free entertainment, rides, food,

arts and crafts vendors and more.

    Florida Strawberry Festival President

    Paul Davis said, “This year’s

attendance was one for the books. “We

are so fortunate to be able to celebrate

    this accomplishment with our

community. We attribute our success to

the hundreds of volunteers and patrons

who come each year to share in the

harvest of what makes Plant City so

special.” I enjoyed volunteering at the

    Media Center, the East Hillsborough

Art Guild Fine Arts Show and the East

    Hillsborough Historic Society

    Strawberry Shortcake Booth.

    Plant City Entertainment Presents……

During WWII, six women gather at the church to

roll bandages and plan the church's 75th

anniversary. Overseeing things is Edith, the

pastor's wise-cracking wife who dispenses Red

Cross smocks and witty repartee to Luby,

whose son is fighting in the Pacific; Mae Ellen,

the church's rebellious organist who wants to

quit but hasn't the courage; Olene, who dreams of

a career in Hollywood; Sammy, a shy newcomer

with a secret; and Vera, an influential Baptist with a secret

of her own. When Luby learns her son has been wounded, she confounds the

others by blaming the vulnerable Sammy.

Twenty-five years later, our "First Baptist Six" reunite. Back to reconcile with

Luby - whose son died of his wounds - is Sammy, whose own son is now in

Vietnam; and Olene, whose flashy show business career will set the town on its

ear. There to welcome them are Vera, her secret still safe; Mae Ellen, still

rebellious and still looking for an escape; and Edith, whose biggest challenge

isn't the church's upcoming centennial but revelations that shake relationships

formed over a quarter of a century. With humor and pathos, these six very

different women find comfort, forgiveness and redemption in each other.

The play features music, in the form of hymns (played on an organ or piano) as

well as other hymns and traditional music song by cast members (used to

advance the story, develop character and entertain).

    Torque Makes Wave in Robotics

    By Breanne Williams

** Reprinted from the Plant City Observer – March 28, 2019 Issue **

Michael Wynne had never pictured a

future in robotics when he began to

contemplate where he would go to high

    school.

An IB student, he had few options

available for his preferred route of

education and when a friend suggested

he join a robotics program that only left

one school in a local vicinity that could

meet all of his interests. He enrolled at

King High School and began to make the

trek from Plant City to Tampa five days

a week to pursue his new passion.

“What’s great about our robotics team is

most people go in without any

information on how to do stuff,” Wynne

said. “We all have assigned things to do

and as a team we compete with our

robot. I’ve learned how to use the drill

press and have picked up a variety of

skills with tools. There’s 15 students and

three mentors, two of the mentors are

    college students… The students pretty

    much teach ourselves, we’re building

    from scratch and programing ourselves

and we kind of teach each other how to

    succeed.”

Each year the team, which is called

Torque, is given a new objective with a

detailed description of the agenda the

robot will have to complete. They then

have six weeks to build the bot and

program it so it can perfectly complete

the new course. During build season the

students work more than 10 hours a

    week, filing time on Monday,

Wednesday and Saturday to perfect their

    ‘bots.

    Wynne said he knew “basically

    nothing” going into the program

    and yet was hooked almost

    immediately upon starting his

    freshman year. He’s a sophomore

now and has fallen even more in

    love with the unique challenges

that come from competing on the

    robotics team.

“I was surprised by how little time

we have to build it,” Wynne said.

“I’ve assumed it would take much

longer to do it, but when we’re

working as a team nonstop it’s

    really impressive how much we

get done in that time. I work on the

bumper, but we have the mindset

that if any of us finish our part we

go and help somewhere else. We

learn so much that way and we’re

able to really build a lot in a short

    period of time.”

Once build season wraps up the

    teams are thrown into heavy

    competition. Each event is

    approximately three days long and

    whichever teams win continue to

    https://www.plantcityobserver.com/author/breanne-williams/

  • Plant City Dining & Entertainment Guide

    April 2019 ~ Page 9 ~

advance day by day. But unlike so

    many local competitions, these students

aren’t just up against teams from

Tampa Bay, Florida or even the entire

    United States. The competitions are

    international and there are designated

districts that teams can travel to

    compete in.

Due to the wide range of talents each

    competition has monumental odds. Just

a few weeks ago Torque was up against

more than 60 other teams and the

    upcoming competition has around 65

    teams confirmed to compete.

“There’s a lot of competition, but we

try not to let that get to us,” Wynne

said. “The hardest part of this entire

process is pretty much at competition

when we’re having to fix problems that

emerge. With the strict time limits you

have a lot to do in a little amount of

    time.”

    Sometimes their drive chain stops

    working midway through an obstacle

course. Sometimes there seems to be a

glitch between the messages the driver

is sending and the machine. Regardless

of what pops up the team has to

immediately fix the problem so the

    robot can continue the competition.

For a school like King, obstacles come

in an entirely different form as well.

Sponsors and funding continue to be a

hurdle for the group and Wynne said

    when these massive international teams

    arrive they’re coming with sponsors

like Disney or NASA and “every tech

company you can imagine.” Because of

the financial backing the programs are

much larger than King can provide with

teams sometimes double the size of the

    Tampa school.

The students are also relying almost

    entirely on their self-taught

knowledge to carry them through the

competition. The three mentors are a

    massive help, however, the students

    aren’t receiving the guidance of

industry experts like many of the

other teams do during build season.

“We’d love to have someone come

in and work with us during build

season,” Wynne said. “We’re still a

relatively new team and we’re going

up against teams that are a lot older

than us. They have knowledge we

don’t. It would be cool if someone

    with engineering or mechanics or

    really any helpful experience could

    come and talk to us.”

Though the obstacles are many, the

team continues to hold its own at

    competition. They’ve become a

    family at Torque and the

    camaraderie makes learning the

niche skills all the more enjoyable.

    “There’s this stereotype that you

have to have a lot of knowledge and

you have to want to go into robotics

to join the team, but that’s just not

true,” Wynne said. “You learn so

much here and it’s open to

everybody. We teach you, you don’t

have to know much and I promise

    you’ll have fun.”

The Beauty of University of South Florida’s Botanical Gardens

    By: Jennifer Jordan

If you’re a gardening enthusiast, admirer

of nature, or are obsessed with

    volunteering, the University of South

Florida’s Botanical Gardens is a gem

that you or anyone can enjoy! Located

on USF’s Tampa campus, it is home to

over 3,000 plants, animals, and natural

    habitats, and attracts about 35,000

    visitors annually. Plant festivals and

    other events attract enthusiasts from

around the state to shop for rare and

    unusual plants. The Botanical Gardens

was established in 1969, and has been

    growing ever since! Pharmacy and

    environmental science students study the

plants and are researching in medical

botany, hoping to find new treatments

for various diseases. If you love

volunteering, the gardens allow you to

volunteer to propagate for the Plant

Shop, or you can volunteer in their front

office or at the many events they hold.

You can even have your wedding at the

    gardens!

The Botanical Gardens are open to the

    public; Monday-Friday from 9:00 a.m.-

    5:00 p.m., Saturday from 9:00 a.m. -4:00

    p.m., and Sunday from 12:00 p.m. – 4:00

p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for

children ages 6-13, and $4 for seniors

(60+). Admission is free to children

under 6 and USF students get in for $1

with a valid student I.D. You can go

check out the plants and habitats, or visit

them during one of the many festivals

they hold at the gardens every year.

In fact, the Botanical Gardens is holding

their 27thannual Spring Plant Festival on

April 14th and 15th, where growers share

their tips and advice, and workshops

    on beekeeping and organic vegetable

gardening are held. Plants such as

    bamboo, orchids, butterfly plants, and

ferns will be sold at the festival, and

parking is free. Admission for the

Spring Festival is $5. With about 16

acres of gardens home to rare and

    unusual plants, USF Botanical

Gardens is the perfect spot to take

gardeners and families, and with a

myriad of beautiful and unique plants,

    animals, and habitats, the Botanical

Gardens is a place where your senses

You can do just that through gift

    card exchanges like Cardpool

    (www.cardpool.com). It is an online

    marketplace through which you can

sell your unwanted gift cards to

people willing to buy them at a

    discount.

You won’t get the full value —

perhaps $90 or $95 for a gift card

worth $100, for example. But you

    will get it in cash.

You may be surprised to find out

that there is a real demand for old

    appliances — including a

    refrigerator, stove, washer and

    dryer.

I was recently looking for a gently

used stackable washer and dryer for

one of my rental condos. Other

buyers just wanted to upgrade their

appliances, but cannot afford to pay

    full retail value.

This is one instance where you’ll

likely need to rely on Craigslist.

    Don’t forget Facebook Marketplace,

    a sometimes overlooked selling

    option.

You can sell everything from board

games and toys to dolls and action

figures — especially if they’re still

    in original packaging.

Do you have any designer hand

bags? Sell them on Bag Borrow or

    Steal (www.bagborroworsteal.com).

    They verify that accessories are

    authentic designer items — not

    knock-offs — and pay well.

SUN ‘n FUN Sponsors First Friday, Offers Ticket Discounts to

    Attendees

SUN ‘n FUN, one of Lakeland’s most

iconic events, is making it easier for

locals to attend its weekend festivities

    while supporting Downtown Lakeland

    on March 1st, 2019. Appropriately

    named “Downtown Lakeland Flight

Night hosted by SUN ‘n FUN”, the

city’s First Friday event, held monthly

    on the cross-streets surrounding

    Lakeland’s Munn Park, the sponsored

promotion will give area residents ticket

discounts and a chance to spin a prize

wheel for upgrades and giveaways. SUN

‘n FUN local partners will also be on-

    hand with games and giveaways

promoting the excitement of aviation and

    STEM-related opportunities.

“Lakeland is our home, and SUN ‘n

FUN belongs to this city and to the

residents of Polk County,” said Greg

    Gibson, Chief Marketing Officer. “First

Friday in Downtown Lakeland is the

perfect time to come out and learn about

    all the fantastic businesses and

restaurants in this great city. This month,

it’s called “Flight Night”, and we’re

offering people who visit the SUN ‘n

FUN display in Munn Park the chance to

buy discounted tickets and win prizes as

a way to thank the people who have

    supported us for 45 years.”

According to Gibson, tickets will be

available for purchase at Flight Night for

any day of the 6-day event, but the

discount deals are on the weekend, when

kids are out of school and families can

    attend together. “We’re offering Florida

residents a BOGO for the weekend

shows,” he said. “Buy an adult ticket for

    Saturday, and you’ll get Sunday’s

    admission for free. During Flight

Night only, we are offering adult

admission for Sunday only at just

    $20. That’s $10 off our website

price to thank people for coming to

    First Friday.” Gibson offered that

    other pricing and discount packages

can be found on the show’s website

    at www.flysnf.org.

The 45th annual SUN ‘n FUN

    International Fly-In and Expo takes

    place at the Lakeland Linder

    International Airport on April 2-7,

2019. There are over 500 exhibitors

    with hands-on high-tech

    experiences, a giant STEM

exposition and a Career Fair. There

    is a 7-acre ramp and ½ mile

expanse of runway with dozens of

    military fighters and heavy aircraft,

plus four huge areas with hundreds

    of Warbirds, Golden Age,

    Homebuilt, and Light Sport aircraft.

Visitors can meet fighter pilots and

veterans from every era of aviation

    in multiple theaters and showcases.

There are airshows daily, plus night

    shows on Wednesday and Saturday

night. The airshows have over 60

aerial acts scheduled for the week,

    and the featured performances this

year include the U.S. Navy’s Flight

    Demonstration Team, The Blue

    Angels, and a Lakeland first – a

    Drone Light Show called “Star

    Dance Spectacular”, on Wednesday

    and Saturday nights.

It is Time to Start Thinking About Summer Activities

    for Area Youth!

The Plant City Recreation & Parks Department’s Youth Summer Program will

kick off registration for their 2019 session with discounted registration during the

week of March 25. Anyone registering during the first week of registration will

receive a $10 discount on their registration fee!

The program includes supervised activities such as arts, games, sports, discovery

(STEM style) and outdoor activities as well as field trips. A special Teen Focus

group will keep the teens active in age-appropriate activities. Planned field trips

for all campers will consist of day excursions to Florida Aquarium, Legoland,

Fun Spot, Skate World, Plant City Family Bowl., Aquatica, and occasional free

matinee movies at Plant City Premier Cinema 8.

Our Summer Youth Program is based out of the Planteen Recreation Center, 301

Dort Street. Any area youths ages 5-15 are eligible to attend. Youngest attendees

    must have completed kindergarten.

The eight week program will start June 10 and run through August 2, 2019. The

fee is only $375 for the 8 weeks of fun, which covers adult supervision, camp tee

shirt for field trips, field trip entry fees and transportation for field trips. This

works out to less than a $10 a day investment in a child! Payment plans are

available, but the total fee needs to be paid by June 7. Payment reserves the

participant’s spot in the program regardless of attendance record.

More information is available on the program web page at

    https://www.plantcitygov.com/parksrec/page/summer-offerings

or by e-mail at [email protected] or by telephone at 813-659-4256.
