7April - 2011

Dear Readers...What a time we’re having at the moment, here in Kuwait! The daily news programmes all across the globe report daily on the unstable political situations which are affecting so many of our neighbours in the Middle East and North Africa region. It’s hard to keep abreast of all the news, sometimes, and to understand all that’s happening, but we can’t ignore the situation and include an overview of these disturbing events in this issue.

The other big topic of conversation recently has been the extreme weather recently experienced. If you were caught in the middle of the recent sand/dust-storm you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about! It seems that such weather conditions may no longer be a rarity, so we are publishing a mini-guide on how to cope with the storms which you might like to keep handy for future reference!

But of course it’s not all doom and gloom, and we have much about which we can be happy and for which we can be thankful. Most of us enjoy excellent health and healthcare, and our features in this issue cover both Men’s and Women’s health issues.

As always, we managed to secure some exclusive interviews with interesting people, and introduce you this month to an entrepreneur with a new vision of Halal-certified cosmetic products; an artist with local history who is planning to hold art workshops afloat in the Mediterranean; an award-winning banker; a rising local marketer; and an actress with great community spirit.

Other regular features include fashion – with reviews of the new season collections from River Island and Next; the arts – including a review of Oscar-winning film “The King’s Speech” and a review of the latest production staged at Kuwait Little Theatre; and cookery – with a much sought-after contribution from celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse!

All-in-all, a bumper issue that’s packed full of interest. And if that’s not enough, we’ve taken a look at some Easter traditions (so beware the Easter Bunny!).

I wish you all good health, and Happy Reading.

The third annual Kuwait Science Fair (KSF) competition celebrated the accomplishments of some of the brightest young and aspiring scientists from schools across Kuwait, in an awards ceremony under the patronage of the Minister of Oil, Minister of Information, and Chairman of Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, HE Sheikh Ahmad Al-Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah.

KSF founders, ExxonMobil Kuwait and Kuwait Energy, and partners announced the winners of the most innovative science projects judged during a four-day assessment by a panel of judges comprising of doctors, scientists, and engineers from renowned institutions in Kuwait.

The first prize winner, Saif Ahmed Elkholy, received a full scholarship in his discipline of choice from the American University for Kuwait (AUK), an international internship at Schlumberger, a cash prize of KD750, gift vouchers worth over KD100 in value, certificates honoring their participation and ranking, and the first place trophy.

The Kuwait Science Fair competition is the largest nation-wide annual competition, encompassing over 200 schools in Kuwait. The competition was founded in 2008 by ExxonMobil Exploration & Production Kuwait Limited and Kuwait Energy Company in a shared commitment to generate student interest and excitement in math and science and to help inspire Kuwait’s future scientists and innovators.

Nearly 350 students applied to participate in the Kuwait Science Fair by the end of the registration phase. The ‘Best 100’ ideas were announced last December and were qualified to continue developing their math and science innovations during the second phase, known as the experimental phase.

Box Hill College Kuwait organised its first career fair with the cooperation of the Manpower & Government

Restructuring Program (MGRP), on Thursday 31st March 2011, with the participation of a number of private international and local companies. The college organised this event to help students with introductions to different private and public industry sectors in Kuwait and to give companies the opportunity to discover the potential and hands-on learning experience of BHCK students. The event also included workshops on how to prepare CVs and how to pass an interview. The workshops were carried out by Ms. Mounira Al Obaidan from MGRP who said that these kinds of workshops help students prepare for their future careers. Ms. Obaidan added “the audience and their interactivity were fabulous; it reflected the interest and mature behaviour of the students”.The participation of MGRP covered different angles and exhibited their different departments, such as “Small Businesses” who help small entrepreneurs by giving them advice and guidance in addition to various workshops that helps them better manage their business. This department serves as a link between these small entrepreneurs and big investors. Another of their departments, “Career Guidance

BHCK’s 1st Career Fair

and Training”, guides students on the major topics required by the private sector and enrols them in specific workshops during their summer vacation. Mr. Abed Al Qassar, Head of Public Relations and Communication at MGRP said “this is our first time to participate in a Career Fair. We were very careful in diversifying our activities, from exhibiting to organising workshops, which will help students and guide them in their future career life. The audience was huge and the students were very interactive. We would like to thank BHCK for giving us this opportunity and we would like to commend the people who organised this event for a well organised and smooth day.”Wataniya Telecom also participated in this event and showed high interest in BHCK’s graduates, especially those of the Graphic Design department, recognising that BHCK is the only private college for women that offer this major. Parsons Brinckerhoff International, a leading company in the engineering consultancy industry, introduced its services and the job opportunities available for students. This day is considered one of the most important activities organised by the Department of Student Affairs at BHCK to encourage and support students in their career planning.

Barefoot in AhmadiRegular readers of this magazine will already know that I am an

enthusiastic supporter of the Kuwait Little Theatre in Ahmadi. During the past twelve months I have acted, sung and even danced on the stage there, produced this season’s pantomime, and have been active both front of house and backstage too. Such an involvement has brought me into contact with many new friends and acquaintances, and created a whole new social circle. That said, you are probably expecting me to publish rave reviews of all the KLT’s productions, irrespective of the performance quality. But, in truth, if something doesn’t entertain or excite me, or is not good and warrants criticism, I will be honest and say so. And so the curtain was raised on Neil Simon’s classic comedy “Barefoot in the Park” which was staged at the KLT for three nights from March 30th until April 1st. The play had been billed as a romantic comedy set in New York in the 1960s. Newlywed wife Corrie is a free spirit, full of life and fun, who tries to involve her more solid, sensible husband Paul in a scheme to “fix up” her mother with their very eccentric new neighbour. When things don’t go according to plan, an argument follows that makes Corrie question their relationship, and their entire marriage. With friends in the cast and crew, I had wanted to go and support them as much as to see the play, and had booked tickets for the final performance. I really wanted it to be good, but must confess that I was a little apprehensive after hearing a couple of mixed reviews from friends who’d been in the audience on the first two nights. Of course, I can only write my review based on the performance I actually attended, and can quite truthfully say it was a total triumph!! In her directorial debut as director at the KLT, Annike Jones and producer Sara Al Huneidi (another newcomer) m a n a g e d to pull off an absolute

corker!! Although longer than most of the KLT’s productions and with two brief intervals, time passed too quickly and I was quite sad when the final curtain fell.Teresa Hansen was remarkably believable in the role of Corrie, and her excellent performance was matched by her stage husband Paul, played by Matt Aston.

Paul Tunbridge

Both actors exhibited masterful control of their characters, and were a joy to watch. They were ably supported by Helen Newton (Ethel Banks) and Mike Blackburn (Victor Velasco) who entertained in equal measure. With Helius D’Souza as the telephone engineer and Gerry Burton as a delivery man, the total cast of six kept a packed house entertained from start to finish, bringing to life an excellent script and injecting the right level of humour throughout.I left the theatre feeling invigorated and satisfied, with a smile on my face and a chuckle in my throat, and proud that I knew the team that had achieved this. Thanks, guys. What a great show!!

“What About The Others?”Harsh Realities In A World Of Change

Propaganda is king and telling lies is one of the few political certainties, but it is becoming less convenient to do so with impunity, since a generation which relies upon technology cannot be deceived by the propaganda of the written word. Various pundits have commented recently about the influence of such mass communication technology on the recent unrest in the Arab world. Twitter is now five years old and has grown into a gangly adolescent complete with pre-pubescent problems. Tech-savvy youth has used social media such as this to publish worldwide and – arguably - generate foment, unrest and discord by sheer volume of 140 character comment, most of which is politically featherweight, but the youthful idealism driving it is a force to be reckoned with. It's worrying to reflect on the notion that if enough people tweet about something, the subject matter acquires respectability, veracity and authority in consequence – the ad populum fallacy. Politicians on the other hand, find 140 characters not nearly enough and use a different logical fallacy, proof by verbosity, to demonstrate a point. This is sometimes referred to as argumentum verbosium, a rhetorical technique that tries to persuade by overwhelming those considering an argument with such a volume of material that the argument sounds plausible, superficially appears to be well-researched, and it is so laborious to untangle and check any supporting facts – there may very well be none at all - that the argument might be allowed to slide by unchallenged. The problem is, just like tweeting, it doesn't work very well. The Arab world appears to have suddenly developed a micro-organic life of its own with frightening rapidity and a single political lacewing, landing on an already unstable leaf, might bring a very large tree crashing down into the forest, where the rest of the UN are condemned to pick up the pieces. Lamentably, there is a smorgasbord of unrest from which to choose, from Bahrain to Syria. An English politician - William Pitt, the Elder, The Earl of Chatham and British Prime Minister from 1766 to 1778 rather dangerously remarked in 1770 in a speech to the House of Lords , then the seat of all power below the monarch: "Unlimited power is apt to corrupt the minds of those who possess it". No doubt the noble lords were suitably aggrieved by the upstart's candour but it is out of such clarity and boldness that true democracy, the quietly and soberly modulated vox populi can flourish. The way this will look in the Middle East, accustomed as it is to royalty with political involvement or rulers whose tribal affiliations guarantee them considerably more influence than their Western counterparts remains to be seen. Some, like Egypt, seem to have run the gauntlet of popular unrest and successfully expelled their leader without bloodshed. Others have not been so fortunate. Some few weeks ago, led by the French, the Americans and the British, air strikes began in response to

UN Resolution 1973, ostensibly to enforce a no-fly zone over Libya. The British, with their often inconveniently sensitive notion of fair play, are leading the way – the French for inscrutable reasons of their own. Consequently, 'coalition forces' have unleashed firepower not seen since the American coalition sent a routed rabble home to Baghdad twenty years ago. Crippling Gaddafi's air power is a fairly straightforward objective and preventing ordnance being emptied indiscriminately on the civilian population in rebel held strongholds like Benghazi is achievable. But, what then? Gaddafi is still at the controls, his tribal allegiances are undiminished and his willingness to slaughter unabated. How then should the operation proceed after these primary objectives are met? Coalition forces have picked a fight. It remains to be seen whether they can finish it or not. Intervention has consequences which may not be immediately apparent, but such are the unpredictabilities of warfare that few can say with any certainty what the socio-political landscape is going to look like when the dust has settled. Tomorrow, all this may very well be old news, irrelevant, but the collateral damage will not be. The losers are, of course, the others, the exiled poor, the voiceless ones, those most unable to deal with the implosion in their lives of warfare not of their making and thus are the most to be pitied. Many of them are illegal immigrants from Ghana and Nigeria - an impoverished underclass in Libyan society - living amidst piles of garbage, sleeping in makeshift, blanketed tents haphazardly strung from fences and trees and breathing fumes from an open sewer which divides their camp from the parking lot of Tripoli’s main airport. All of them are desperate to escape and many report they had seen deaths from hunger and disease almost every night. Scrawny babies are born with a feeble grasp on life and without proper medical attention for either themselves or their mothers. Without sufficient money, papers or the wherewithal to escape, tragically, over a million illegals from sub-Saharan Africa are caught in the middle. But, worse follows. These are the ones in a classic Catch 22, most particularly dark-skinned Africans who are routinely robbed for money and valuables by loyalist guards at the checkpoints and attacked on sight by the rebels who believe them to be sub-Saharan mercenaries hired by the Gaddafi regime. Streets remain uncleaned, construction projects halted and people are dying. Their own governments have, it seems, left them to fend for themselves and the security stranglehold around Tripoli has prevented aid from reaching them in the makeshift squalor of their camps.I wonder if the sea of human misery encamped around Tripoli airport cares very much who wins, since it will inevitably be the loser after the events described in this article become yesterday's news, redundant in the face of new realities yet to be revealed.

Just one generation ago someone like Kate Middleton would have been tasered for getting too close to the British Royal family.

So when Clarence House relaxed their stun guns and let their future king propose to a 'commoner', Britain awoke in a postmodern-like daze where realities became relative and class boundaries blurred.

The only problem with such superb forward thinking is that the Royal Family is still very much backward and old fashioned when it comes to some matters, namely rules and etiquette. And as the first normal woman to enter the Windsor fold, Kate will feel the changes to her life on a higher level than many past princesses. Here are ten things the bride-to-be will no longer be allowed to do once she walks down the Green Mile – ahem, aisle – in Westminster:1. Be referred to as 'Kate'When Kate Middleton joins the House of Windsor this year, her official title will become ‘Her Royal Highness the Princess William of Wales’.She can be addressed as 'Catherine' or 'Ma'am' (pronounced like 'ham'). But 'Kate' isn't going to cut it anymore by Royal standards.Clarence House officials will probably dine London's Royal correspondents and then ask them to please refer to Kate as 'Catherine' in the future. But we think they will refuse to do this. Something to do with search engine keywords.2. VoteTechnically, the Queen and other members of her family are allowed to vote, but they do not do so because in practice it would be considered unconstitutional and not in accordance with the need for neutrality. This is in keeping with the Royal Family's public role, which is based on identifying with every section of society, including minorities and special interest groups.3. Run for political officeFor the reasons stated above, this is also a no no.4. Escape the scrutinyAs arguably Britain's most dysfunctional family, the Monarchy provides the British public with a generous source of voyeuristic entertainment, and an opportunity for heartless slander.Having already been under the media spotlight for the best part of nine years, Kate has copped her fair share of criticism from the media over the most mundane and insignificant of things. She's a commoner. She's an outrageous social climber. She's not outgoing enough. Her mum is an air hostess who uses the word 'toilet'.The public watchdog will be onto Kate 24/7, so when she slips on that tiara come 29 April she will damn well have to make sure it’s a pretty one. But not too pretty. That would be exhibitionist. This scrutiny will grow existentially and extend to all aspects of her life. Did you know the Middleton family can only trace their roots back to the mid 1500s? So what were they up to in 1483 then? They must be hiding something.5. Play MonopolyIn 2008, Prince Andrew, Duke of York, said that the Royal Family was not allowed to play Monopoly at home "because it gets too vicious". No member of the family has yet revealed what they play in its place during the Christmas holidays.6. Say or do anything controversialThis includes accepting large amounts of money from 'businessmen' for access to your husband and getting your toes sucked in public by your financial adviser. You know who you are, Fergs. But it also encompasses Kate's expression of her preferred political position, social position, sexual position – basically anything within the realms of personality. So far she has succeeded seamlessly in this, not putting a foot wrong in any situation. Granted though, the world has only heard her speak once after her and William's

Ten things Kate can't do once she marries Wills

engagement and that was a heavily rehearsed affair.7. Eat shellfishBritish Royals are apparently never served shellfish, because of a fear of food poisoning. So if Kate can't live without crustaceans, she will have to seek them out in her own time.8. WorkIt is well known that Royals and careers don't mix well. As proven when Prince Charles' plan to work part time in a factory failed and Countess Sophie Wessex was forced to abandon her PR firm.In Kate's case though, the whole unemployment scenario shouldn't be too difficult to handle. At 29 years of age she is the oldest spinster ever to marry a future king, and though she has a History of Art degree and years of life experience, Kate has spurned work wherever possible. This is unless you count seven months as a casual accessories buyer for clothing chain Jigsaw and a short time working for the family company, Party Pieces.Pinned by some as the unemployed woman marrying into a welfare family, we're reckoning the guys at Buckingham will keep her busy by sending her to lots of boat launches and pancake flipping gigs.9. Sign anything unofficialAs a potential future counsellor of state if William becomes king, Kate might at some stage have to sign government papers and brings legislation into force in her husband's place.People in this position are strictly not supposed to sign anything that could lead to their signature being copied and forged. Last year Prince Harry was in hot water when he flouted this rule by signing the plaster cast of a girl who had fractured her arm, a media report said. The 17-year-old from Leicestershire was so excited she said her cast would be "going in a glass box", which the Queen might not have been too happy about.10 Finish her dinnerIf she is a slower eater than her grandmother-in-law, Kate could go hungry. In Britain, when the Queen stops eating, you stop as well, fork in hand.

Look around. It is not hard to see that we live in the human world of conditional love - a world where rewards and punishments are part of giving and receiving love.

Conditional love always holds out a promise, yet always requires something of us. Consequently we learn to receive love under certain circumstances when particular requirements are met.

Conditional love is pervasive. Its specific patterns are shaped first within the norms of a particular culture and then individualized within the emotional system of a particular family.

Having learned very well how to be loved conditionally, adults unknowingly pass the same set of emotional rules on to the next generation. And generation follows generation within a social structure, engendering and fostering particular aspects of incomplete nurturance.

Love that creates a nurture/wound environment is a compromising paradox disguised in the everyday environment of care giving, love, reward, criticism, punishment, emotional repression, emotional distancing, emotional smothering. It becomes very real to us. Offered in varying degrees, it is sometimes overt, sometimes disguised, but when nurturing is bonded with wounding, it builds a nesting place where fear of rejection and abandonment can develop.

Imagine the effect this everyday reality has on a small child in the process of forming a personality and a belief system. So here we are, adults predisposed to live with an underlying angst rooted in the dread of being worthless and in the fear of rejection and abandonment.

Sometimes this inner reality is glaring, sometimes it is subtle, and often it is denied. But the unsafe feeling is there expressed in how we choose to live. We find ourselves adjusting to the grip of conditional love, and the interior process of spiritual awareness - designed to grow and develop within the everyday world of experience - is distracted and often blocked.

Wonder, then, how conditional love affects not only you - the individual - but society and the world. Look around. Conditional love re-enforces success, failure, power and vulnerability, and we see its presence in many forms of pain and injustice.

And yet the process of spiritual formation continues to advance despite the man-made reality of fear and insecurity. The inner movement of spiritual evolution persists, always moving forward threading its way through our misguided intentions, always working to surface in our awareness, always guiding us to articulate inner Wisdom.

This ever-present inner Wisdom is Unconditional Love. Look for it.

Conditional Love

Have you figured out what it really means? Have you realised the extent

and power that conditional love has to alter the direction of your emotional development? Have you discovered that it pretty much defines your behavior? And have you known that it has profound spiritual consequences?

I’m convinced that something weird is happening; that the earth must have shifted on its axis or

something; because for the past few years there seem to have been a rise in instances of freak weather across the globe. Some countries are enjoying much warmer climates than those to which they’d become accustomed over the path of many years; others have experienced earthquakes, tsunamis and floods like never before. So many such “natural” disasters have been in the news in recent months that I shall not attempt here to name them all, but our hearts go out to all who have been affected and who still have to deal with the aftermath on a daily basis.

In Kuwait we, too, have recently witnessed what some have described as the most severe sand and dust storms in living memory! I recall waking up last year to some amazingly orange sky and landscapes, but this year’s storms have surpassed (if not engulfed) those memories. The growing numbers of video clips which have been posted on YouTube show clearly the severity of the storms, and it is a wonder and a blessing that casualties have been so minimal.

As I write this, bad weather alerts and warnings are still being issued, and I suspect we have not yet seen the last of such dramatic climatic conditions. So how do we cope with this weather? Are there any actions, or changes to our behaviour, that we should consider?

Most of us are aware of the health hazards presented by these conditions. The current dust storms sweeping across Kuwait will doubtless have caused an increase in the level of suffering of patients with asthma and related allergies. For all of us, an exposure to dust poses a greater risk of discomfort such as in shortness of breath, wheezing, itching, inflammation of the eyes, and so on.

In addition to the health concerns, if you are caught out in a dust storm your priority must be to maximise the levels of safety of yourself and others. The YouTube clips I’ve viewed showed the raging storm, but also some erratic behaviour from some of the motorists on the roads. It stands to reason that vvisibility will be greatly impacted during dust storms and consequently increases the risk of serious car accidents which, in turn, increases the risk of fatal injuries and disabilities. Common sense, therefore, dictates that strict observation of all traffic laws and regulations will help to reduce, and even hopefully eliminate, road traffic accidents. So, if you’re caught on the road when the dust and sand begins to blow, please remember to adhere to the following:

• DO ensure that all drivers and passengers are wearing seat belts.• DO keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you.• DO switch on the headlights. • DO keep your speed to within the designated speed limits, and reduce your speed as much as possible. Of course, if visibility is really poor you should stop and park somewhere safe, and wait until good visibility has returned and you can drive on safely.

Page 19: April Issue

19April - 2011

Weathering the Storms• DO NOT drive while using a mobile telephones, but concentrate 100% on driving.

As with all good health warnings, prevention is better than cure. We recommend, of course, that you minimize your exposure to dust as much possible. You can work towards eliminating the entry of dust into your house, office and vehicle by tightly closing all openings and by using well-maintained air conditioning units.

To minimize your personal exposure to dust, and to help avoid allergic reactions (asthma, Skin, eyes, etc.) you should cover your entire body as much as possible, using dust masks to prevent inhalation of dust, and safety glasses, goggles or good quality sun glasses to protect your eyes.

We recommend that you stay indoors and try not to leave the house unless your trip is essential, but if you do venture out you should at least ensure that all windows within your car are firmly closed. Buying fresh provisions is a necessity, but you should aim to do all your shopping inside closed and air conditioned centres and, as soon as you get home, have a shower and a change of clothes.

So far we’ve paid attention to maintaining your personal health, and considered what steps to take when you venture out in a storm. Finally, let’s take a look at some of the measures you can take to protect your home environment...

• Help to prevent the entry of dust into your house by sealing all cracks and openings, even placing an old towel along the crack at the foot of the door, and ensure that all windows are correctly closed and sealed.• Ensure the curtains are kept clean and as free from dust as possible.• Place floor mats by all entrances to guard against dirt and dust from being walked into the house, and encourage all visitors to use them.• Avoid hanging laundry outside.• If you have the benefit of air conditioning, make sure it is properly serviced and maintained. • Check that the filters used in your air conditioning are of a good quality and frequently cleaned. If possible you should use HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filters, especially in bedrooms and where there are asthma and allergy sufferers.• Maintain an optimum indoor relative humidity (i.e. 40 – 55%) by the use of air conditioners or dehumidifiers.• Ensure that all rooms are kept clean, paying special attention to bedrooms.- Use allergy-proof covers on mattresses, box springs and pillows.- Wash sheets, blankets and curtains in hot water (at least 54 C).- Avoid using carpets and rugs.- Do not keep pets in bedrooms. • Vacuum carpets at least once a week, using a vacuum cleaner equipped with a small-particle or HEPA filter.• Use synthetic quilts, pillows and cushions, instead of feather ones.• Replace woollen blankets with nylon or cotton ones. • Bathe and clean pets weekly.• Fix all leaking taps and pipes. So stay alert; stay healthy; and let’s all ride the next storm together!

Thank youBecause every single one of us longs to feel appreciated, words of gratitude make the heart sing. Thank you, I appreciate you, I’m grateful for you—these words are food for the soul.

I forgive youWe all make mistakes. Unintentionally, we may hurt our friends, children, co-workers, and others. Words of forgiveness heal the heart by lifting the crippling burden of guilt.

I love youQuite possibly the greatest statement of all, nothing compares to, “I love you.”

These words reflect the purest, most natural gift known to mankind: love. The only thing that beats saying the words I love you is showing

love through action.

I was wrongFew words have the power to ignite the flame

of forgiveness like the unselfish, courageous admission of wrongdoing. When we’re hurt,

we know that the past can’t be changed; yet acknowledgment of the pain that has been caused goes a long way towards improving the future.

You are beautifulWhen we feel ugly inside or out, it means the world to hear that someone else still thinks we’re beautiful.

It’s okayWhen we are worried, hurt, anxious or afraid, these words of

reassurance help to bring about peace of mind. If you’ve ever cried on the shoulder of a friend, you know how good it feels to have someone remind you that everything is going to be just fine.

I understandIt’s human nature to try to relate to others, so nothing is more frustrating than feeling misunderstood. In times when we feel alone, misjudged or isolated in our beliefs; an understanding friend is much appreciated. We don’t necessarily need others to agree, but we long for someone who says, “I get it. I understand. I see your point.”

You’re safeWhen we feel vulnerable and afraid, these words have the power to restore the sense of security and protection that we crave. Fear may disease the mind, but words of safety are a part of the antidote.

Little words make a BIG differenceAs children many of us hyped the statement, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” Clearly, it doesn’t take long to realize that words have far more weight than we want to realize. They influence thoughts, feelings, actions and states of mind. Even little words often have big meaning.Think about it. Whether you want to land your dream job, improve your friendships, save your marriage or retain your employees; the words you choose can make all the difference. The simplest little words, which we take for granted, have the power to hurt or heal, to inspire or discourage, to help or to hinder. The list below includes examples of little words that have big meaning in the most positive way.

We have birth right Not to be Negative!1. No one can ruin your day without YOUR permission.2. Most people will be about as happy as they decide to be.3. Others can stop you temporarily, but only you can do it

permanently.4. Whatever you are willing to put up with is exactly what

you will have.5. Success stops when you do.6. When your ship comes in ... make sure you are willing to

unload it.7. You will never "have it all together".8. Life is a journey ... not a destination. Enjoy the trip!9. The biggest lie on the planet: "When I get what I want, I

will be happy".10. The best way to escape your problem, is to solve it.11. Life's precious moments don't have value unless they're

shared.12. If you don't start, it's certain you won't arrive.13. We often fear the thing we want the most.14. He or she who laughs ... lasts.15. Yesterday was the deadline for all complaints.16. Life it what's coming ... not what was.17. Look for opportunities ... not guarantees.18. Success is getting up one more time.19. Now is the most interesting time of all.20. When things go wrong, don't go with them.

Things toRemember

Little words make a BIG differenceI admire youHaving someone look up to you, think highly of you, or aspire to follow in your footsteps is motivating beyond belief. Words of admiration are empowering, as they impart a sense of importance by reminding us that we’re making an impact.

I support youWhen making a tough decision, which may or may not be the best, it means the world to know that someone is on your side no matter what. Statements like, “I’ll be there” and “I support you” encourage us to move forward with less fear of judgment.

You can do itWhen you’re contemplating giving up or battling feelings of self-doubt, encouraging words make all the difference in the world. There’s something about knowing that someone else has faith in you that revitalizes the faith you should have in yourself.

You’re the oneThese words say I choose you, you are it for me, you are special. Few things top the feeling that comes with knowing that you stand out in an exceptional way to someone.

It’s all about youMost days in life aren’t all about self, but we never forget the days that are. On occasions like birthdays, graduations and weddings; we thrive in the knowledge that it’s our own special day. It feels great to have unselfish friends who allow your special days to be absolutely 100% about you.

I’m here for youIf you’ve ever needed a shoulder to cry on, you know the power of these words. They remind us that we are not alone, that someone is there to help us through pain, loss, and all of life’s struggles. Even those who appear to have life under control need someone dependable in their corner.

Great jobGreat job. Congratulations. Job well done. Whether or not we admit it, most of us delight in others’ recognition of our efforts. Words of praise and recognition inspire us to do more, to work harder and to feel a sense of pride.

I miss youWe can’t always be present with those that we love, yet it means so much to know that we are missed during our absence. This is a way of saying, I love your company and I can’t wait until we’re together again.

You matterWe all want to feel that we are important to someone or something other than ourselves. To hear that you are valued by another person, particularly at times when you feel useless or insignificant, is extra special.

I’m sorryWhen the heart aches, a sincere apology sets the stage for forgiveness and healing. I’m sorry, please forgive me, I apologize—these are all statements that show recognition of the damage caused and a desire to ease the pain.I hope you’ve enjoyed these little words with big meaning. As you continue with your day, take care to speak wisely and to use those words that you’d love to have spoken in return. Finally, remember something - people don't know how you feel unless you say it; don't assume they do!

Easter TraditionsBeware the Bunny!!IN

Christians across the world will be celebrating Easter during the weekend 22nd ‘til 24th April. It is a period of great religious significance for many, and marks the end of the 40-day period of “Lent” during which many will observe some manner of fasting. But there are also many Easter traditions which have been observed across many years which do not have their origins in religion.

Easter EggsOne of the most obvious – and certainly one of the most popular - is the giving and receiving of Chocolate Eggs. As a youngster in England, I would usually abstain from eating sweets and chocolate during Lent, so an abundance of chocolate in the shape of eggs was always a welcome sight on Easter Sunday! But from where did the association with eggs originate?Indeed, of all the symbols associated with Easter, the egg (a symbol of fertility and new life) is the most identifiable, and the customs and traditions of using eggs have been associated with Easter for centuries. Originally, Easter eggs were painted with bright colours to represent the sun-light of spring and were either used in Easter-egg rolling contests or given as gifts. After they were coloured and etched with various designs, eggs would be exchanged between lovers and romantic admirers. In medieval time eggs were traditionally given at Easter to the servants, and in Germany eggs were given to children along with other Easter gifts. As time went by, different cultures have developed their own ways of deco-rating Easter eggs. Slavic people, for example, decorate their eggs in special patterns of gold and silver. Pysanki eggs are a masterpiece of skill and work-manship in which melted beeswax is applied to the fresh white egg before it is dipped in successive baths of dye. After each dip, wax is painted over the area where the preceding colour is to remain. Eventually a complex pattern of lines and colours emerges into a work of art. In Germany, as well as in other countries, eggs used for cooking were not bro-ken but the contents were removed by piercing the end of each egg with a needle and blowing the contents into a bowl. The resultant hollow eggs were dyed and hung from shrubs and trees during the Easter Week. Armenians would decorate their hollow eggs with pictures of religious figures and other religious designs. For thousands of years, people thought of eggs as the symbols of new life. But

some people also thought that the Earth itself had hatched from a huge egg, which is why the egg was chosen by Christians as a symbol of resurrection. Other countries have their own customs associated with eggs at Easter. In Po-land, girls used to send eggs to their favourite boyfriends., and in Finland chil-dren would beat the grown-ups with birch twigs until they were given eggs as ransom. How eggstraordinary!

The Easter Bunny The Easter Bunny has its origin in pre-Christian fertility lore. The Hare and the Rabbit were the most fertile animals known, and they served as symbols of the new life during the Spring season. The Bunny as an Easter symbol seems to have its origins in Germany, where it was first mentioned in German writings in the 1500s. The first edible Easter bunnies were made of pastry and sugar and appeared in Germany during the early 1800s. The Easter Bunny was first introduced to American folklore by the German set-tlers who arrived in the Pennsylvania Dutch country during the 1700s. The arrival of the "Oschter Haws" was considered "childhood's greatest pleasure" next to a visit from Santa Claus on Christmas Eve. The children believed that, if they were good, the "Oschter Haws" would lay a nest of coloured eggs. The children would build a nest in a secluded place in the home, barn or garden. Boys would use their caps, and girls their bonnets, to make the nests. The use of elaborate Easter baskets would come later as the tradition of the Easter Bunny spread throughout the country. Of course, this tradition lives on in many variations and my sister can be spot-ted early on Easter Sunday morning, dressed as a giant rabbit (complete with large floppy ears and a powder-puff tail), hiding eggs around the garden for her grandchildren to find. How eggcentric!

Morris DancingIn many parts of England – and most particularly in rural villages and market towns - dancers called "Morris dancers" perform on Easter Sunday. These dances are very old spring dances to frighten away the evil spirits of winter. The dancers wear long white shorts, red sashes, and straw hats with lots of flowers and streamers. Red and green ribbons and little bells are tied onto the dancers. As the dancers move quickly the bells ring and the ribbons wave. How eggsilerating! However you choose to spend the Easter weekend (and we have listed just a small sample of the many traditions which are observed worldwide) we at CityPages wish you an eggceptionally enjoyable time.

Bucket List Cindy Chang is a designer. She turned the side of an abandoned house in her comparatively poor neighbourhood into a giant chalkboard where residents can fill in the blanks and remember what is important to them. All they have to do is complete the sentence, ‘before I die I want to…’. It’s also about turning a neglected space into a constructive one where people can learn the hopes and aspirations of the people around them. Great idea. I wish I’d thought of it. I suppose most of us have a bucket list of some kind – a mental must-do of things we’d quite like to but might never get round to or afford to do. I’d like to drive a Ferrari around Monza. I’d also like to have the skill to drive it well.I’d like to be disciplined enough to finally get a PhD in something valuable enough to impact the lives of others in a positive and constructive way – to contribute, perhaps, to the cause of human happiness – perhaps by emigrating to Papua New Guinea. I’d like to see or take part in a genuine, undisputed miracle, meet the Pope, freebase from the top of the Burj Khalifa, learn to speak another language fluently, play guitar like with insane talent, ski the Flying Mile at Les Arcs fast enough to scare myself silly, learn the viola (again) write a book that I can be really proud of, see African children (or wherever) gain lifetime benefit educationally from something that I have given them, speak or play to spellbound multitudes….the list goes on and is probably of no interest to anyone but myself. But, what of others? How would Muammar Gaddafi complete the sentence …before I die I want to…’trample on the bloodstained, rotting corpses of those who dared to defy my despotic ambitions in the ruins of Benghazi’, perhaps. Some might have more modest, less overarching desires. ‘I want to make a difference’ is a phrase oft-repeated on the Wall. Make a difference to whom, and for what purpose, I wonder? We all, I think, want to ‘make a difference, almost as validation of our continued presence on the planet, a footprint in the eternal sand, not fading like Rubashov’s ‘shrug of eternity’, the final sentence in ‘Darkness at Noon’.Google has over sixty-eight million pages containing the words ‘make a difference’.We curmudgeons do schmaltz rather sparingly. However, for dewy-eyed, soft, warmhearted, compassionate human beings…this is for you

Flicker… BUT I need a lover or a friend. I might tempt my luck and ask for them both because I’m so fed up with the pretend.

… I’m walking the thin hot wire. Trying to keep balance… trying to hide my struggling. Although I’m burning, step by step I’m crossing over. Bearing with the hurt knowing I have to move on… knowing one foot wrong and I’ll be falling.

… On the other side I can see a flickering candle, a dancing flame. I can see wax dripping into the abyss. I can see it crying… I can feel my eyes tearing. So afraid a drop of my tear may kill it to darkness. I can see it dancing… I can’t exhale to let go of my tiredness and burdens. So afraid a breath may wind it to a wiggling smoke.

… Nevertheless it’s getting darker… the candle is getting shorter, and I’m still clinging to the rope of belief… still, I’m trying harder… still, I’m faking to be stronger but I’m not getting used to the pain of burning.

Deep down I can grab my fears and hide them in the darkest cave. Just when they are forgotten, they bounce again into the spotlight… they haunt, prickle and exhume with their claws, examine the flaws of my existence.

… & they are weighing me down… they are shaking my stance… those passions and those pains, those memories and those uncertainties, those dreams and those wastes, that pride and that dignity. Like the thunder , they flash. Just out of the blue. Once they unsettle me they vanish, just into thin air.

… & those mingling voices surrounding me into a bubble. They keep me unfocused, uncertain and distracted. Can’t decide which one is of my conscience… which are of you or of the devil whispering from above my shoulder. Like the bullet and the arrow, the words can’t be withdrawn… and the damage remains.

… & I don’t know if those decisions were mine or yours… I’m clueless of which one is my salvation door… I space out and slip.

… Suddenly I’m twice as lonely and half as living… suddenly it can get even darker. The wire can be more thinner… even more hotter, but yet I have more skin to be burned… have more endurance to suffer. Suddenly the distance has gotten shorter, none the less the journey is still immortal.

May the tale reveals its epilogue…. May the candle keep flickering its way to extinction…

The TestThis test never fails to scare me over and over again

Never fails to get me anxious, restless and causes me intolerable pain.

And it only composed of two questions.

Though, they require intense concentration and attention.

As much as the questions had proved to be tricky and misleading,

Every word of the answer must be written with cautious heeding.

The questions are… Does this person is the one for you?

And for that person what shall you do?

And it happens that you are the substance of my test.

For you have been my dream and my quest.

So my answer would be that I’ll be fighting for you.

And that I’ll be doing everything I possibly can do.

That I’ll never give you up or sell you cheap.

On you I will bet my life, for you I will blindly leap.

But I fear my answers would come out vague and unclear.

Then what I meant to say would sound different from what you hear.

I fear my words fail to prove that my feelings are never fake.

And my trials to succeed would end up as fatal mistakes.

But when you take the test is when it scares even more.

Because it will be the time to know if I’m worth fighting for.

As I would come face to face with reality.

And the fact if you or not really want me!

Am I soaked deep down under your skin?!

And your precious heart I managed to win?!

Will your answers be “you’ll stand up for me in every situation?!”

And that “to have me you’d defeat every obstacle and confrontation?!"

Or you’ll be having second thoughts considering a retreat?!

Leaving a plain test paper and an empty cold seat?!

How did you spend your educational years?I went to Notre Dame and Saint Coeur schools in Zahle until I finished my high school. At that time, in the late 1980s, the political situation in Lebanon was not too good and my parents decided to send me to the US to continue my studies. I majored in Computer Engineering at Wayne State University in Michigan, from where I graduated with a 4.0 in 1992. Attached to family and country, I remember that I graduated on a Friday and by Saturday I was sleeping in my bed in Lebanon! Thus I returned back home to start my career and look for job opportunities.

So what were the job opportunities that arose? I started working with my father in his company in the early 1990s. He had a general trading company that imported and exported food products all over the world. This work developed my personality more than my skills, and I learned how to be strict but fair; direct yet diplomatic. From there I started to look for other opportunities that would increase my independence and allow me to pursue my childhood dream. I moved to National Bank of Kuwait in 1995 as an MIS specialist, and worked there for ten years until 2005. My job at NBK gave me a lot of chances to grow and to prove myself, and to demonstrate my potential to others. Heading the MIS Department by 1998, I was a key player in the implementation of the bank’s Data Warehouse Project which was the first of its kind in the region at that time. Having then worked with international consultants on many projects related to retail banking, I was appointed to head the Marketing of Private Banking in 2002. In 2005 I left NBK and moved to Ahli United Bank for a position which was wider in terms of exposure and responsibility, and was appointed as the Head of Marketing for private banking in Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and UK. During my two years at Ahli United I expanded my knowledge in the investment arena on a global scope. I dealt with multi-national firms and designed structured products to suit the Kuwaiti clientele. and was recognized by an international rating agency as providing the best private banking in the region in 2004.Moving in 2007 to The Commercial Bank of Kuwait and taking the position of Head of Marketing and Research and in 2010 I was appointed to Head of the Sales Department in the bank, in addition to my role as head of Marketing, with the objective to increase sales and raise the level of productivity. In addition to my career, I am heavily involved in social community activities, acting as an advisor to the board of LOYAC (an organization for youth development in Kuwait) and serving on the board of LOYAC Lebanon, which was established in 2009.

Why did you choose to remain in the

banking sector?Although my background was mainly technical, working in the banking sector and, specifically, in the business areas gives me more opportunity for creativity and innovation. I like the nature of work in this sector because the challenges are big but the potential for growth is bigger.

Who inspires you?Any person who makes a difference to the society in which he or she lives is an inspiration to me. I believe every one of us can do something and add their own touch to the community but very few actually do anything. It needs courage, patience and creativity.

What do you think are the 3 Keys to Success!1. Networking and diversification in work and so cial commitments. 2. Creativity and ambition.3. Patience and hard work.

Have you received any awards for your professional work?In 2008 I was selected by The Asian Banker as one of “The Top 50 Most Promising Young Leaders” in the banking and financial services industry for the Asia Pacific and Middle East regions. This award was delivered to me in Hanoi, Vietnam, during the Asian Banking Summit and was one of the most prestigious recognitions that I have received so far. The Asian Banker organization wanted to recognize people who are under 40 years of age for their outstanding achievements in their places of work and, after an extensive four-month survey plus research into five hundred nominations, they made their choices and granted me one of the awards.

Do you have any plans for the future?I would like to expand my knowledge and career, and create a consultancy firm, applying the experience that I’ve gained throughout my career to help companies and institutions grow and improve their market positions. There are always ways to enhance a business, and sometimes even minor changes within an organization can result in immense improvements with positive effect on the bottom line!

What can you tell us about your most memorable and successful marketing campaign? In March 2007 a major event took place in Kuwait where The Simurgh show (a mobile theatre from France) was brought to Kuwait by LOYAC for the first time and performed on the Green Island for 2 days. That was a great show and, supported by a huge national marketing campaign, attendance reached around 1000. It was a memorable experience to see people moving with the performers around the island and enjoying the music and scenes with amazing light effects and

exclusive costumes. If you could travel back through time,

what single mistake would you correct? It is not really a mistake, but maybe I would have taken another route in my career to become self employed. I sometimes feel that I could do more if I were self employed, and all my achievements to date would have been for the benefit of my own business.

Can you recommend a recently-watched movie?Actually, I am definitely not the right person to ask about movies. I do not like going to cinemas and much prefer watching movies at home. Believe it or not, when I buy a movie to watch it sometimes takes me as long as three days to see it (watching for just half an hour each day!).

Do you engage in any kind of sports?I go to the Gym at least 4 times a week, and I like swimming and tennis.

Where is your favourite holiday destination?I have travelled all over the world for business or pleasure, but being “a clam person” I prefer places that are peaceful and quiet. I recently went to Santorini in the Greek Islands, which I found to be one of the greatest spots on the globe with all its spectacular nature and landscape. I would happily go back there at any time!

Do you have a favourite food?I’m not very specific in choosing food, as long as it’s healthy and well presented.

What do you never forget before going to sleep? To thank God for everything; for health, peace and great family.

Is there anything you can never leave your house without?I have to admit (although I don’t like to say it) – my iPhone!

What is the best piece of advice you can offer to aspiring advertising and marketing professionals? Most product offerings nowadays are very similar and competitive. The way to promote, and the timing of promotion, is what makes a difference to the success of such offerings. The brand, and the creativity around the brand, is what stays in people’s minds.

And finally, do you have a message for us at CityPages?Life is short, and every one of us can make a difference in this life. My message to CityPages is to continue to be innovative, and to keep shining a spotlight on successes and great achievements. By doing so, we could all learn from each others’ experiences to enhance the world in which we live.

What can you tell us about your family and education? My family and other animals, you mean? Hmm… we’re a handful, I suppose. My parents consist of my father (a retired Geologist and Pushto musical tv show host/radio show host/other forms of past glory) and my mother (a ‘retired’ school teacher and now and forever Queen of the House). I’ve got 3 siblings; an elder sister named Shandana who’s quite the brilliant 2nd grade teacher and makes a killer Apple Crumble (think Bree from Desperate Housewives); a younger brother named Aliyar who thought he was a rapper for most of his life and thankfully so, because I don’t think I’d ever have learned to truly appreciate Tupac if it weren’t for him; and a younger sister named Misbah who’s honestly a force to be reckoned with and, even though I didn’t take too well to her growing taller than me, she’s a good kid. Education-wise, I’m not very educated. Well, I’ve got a private Bachelor’s degree, which is something for which I was required to do very little studying so I’m not sure it qualifies. The fact that I passed was a complete blessing/fluke. Before this, I did my ‘O’ and ‘A’ levels from what I think were great schools. I’d now like to progress to study both film and acting.

Besides acting, how do you occupy your time?I work for Kuch Khaas – a Centre for Art, Culture and Dialogue - as Deputy Director, though probably only because I was there when we first started things. It’s a great community space in Islamabad, and probably the first of its kind, where we promote the staging of all kinds of cultural and innovative classes, workshops, events and activities. It’s the best day job a person could ask for, so I’m really, really lucky. Other than that, I used to host the Rush Hour on City FM 89, one of the best decisions of my life. Due to time constraints,

“My Family and Other Animals”Shahana Khan Khalil describes herself as “a mix of things”. Primarily an actress, her experience has been mainly in theatre although her recent project - Slackistan – has witnessed her first step into film. Other than that, Shahana helps run a community space called Kuch Khaas – a Centre for Art, Culture and Dialogue - in Islamabad, and she is also a Radio Jockey for City FM 89, which is Pakistan’s leading English radio station. A bit of a workaholic, she sings and draws from time to time, dreams of featuring in a cartoon, has had her name changed five times, obsesses about the fantasy genre as a whole, and is fluent in chipmunk-speak! So, having been granted an exclusive interview for CityPages readers, we engaged the services of our friendly local chipmunk translation bureau …

I’ve switched to City Lounge on 89 but the fact is that, once you start radio-jockeying, there’s no turning back. Besides this, I do whatever really “floats my boat” I suppose.

What can you tell us about Slackistan?Slackistan is a very cool, indie-flavoured film that’s a really fun watch. One particular comment that I liked was ‘This is not CNN’s Pakistan’. It’s the story about a bunch of twenty-somethings in this little ideal bubble that is the city of Islamabad. It’s really interesting, especially from an outsider’s point of view, to see just how stark a contrast may exist between the people in this little bubble and those they choose to let in or not. It’s a very real picture of an everyday life.

What role do you play in Slackistan?I play the role of ‘Zara’ in the film. Zara is the epitome of a social, self-conscious, branded image of a girl. Each character in the film portrays a stereotype that really does exist in Islamabad, and possibly in the rest of the world. The story can be universal. Zara represents a façade that serves a clique in society. The idea of her is as real to Islamabad as it may be to any other place in the world. Of course, given that this is Islamabad, we do have a unique setting considering our cultural backdrop. But then, that’s something the film will paint for you.

How did the Director, Hammad Khan, cast you for this role?Hammad came to Pakistan in 2005 and caught a performance of mine in a stage adaptation of Moulin Rouge, produced by Centerstage Productions here in Islamabad. This was just the second time I had acted in a professional theatrical production, and I was 17 years old. He then established contact with me through a social networking site and mentioned that he would be working on a film. Years passed by and then, one day in 2009, he contacted me about screen tests for Slackistan. The rest, as they say, is history.

Did you feel that the role was just right for you? The role itself is actually a complete opposite of who I am. I’m not brand/image conscious. I’ve only recently started using makeup and that, too, as little as possible. Zara’s character meant having an insane amount of makeup caked on my face all the time but, having read the script, I instantly knew that this would work for me. She is a character that I could easily recognize in people

around me, again, referring to the stereotype. Because Islamabad is so small, I am afforded exposure to just about everyone in town, so I perfectly understood the concept behind of Zara.

Can you describe a typical day in your life?A typical day in my life? How about a load of crazy? And that’s both good and bad. These days, it’s lots and lots of Kuch Khaas, but they are such happy days. When I’m doing a play, the day’s divided between work and rehearsals. Projects come and go; I’ll shoot for this or that; and, of course, I have my radio slot.

Did you all face any difficulties filming Slackistan in Pakistan? When filming Slackistan we did have to keep things low-key. You can’t make a big, flamboyant deal of what you’re doing really, which is actually pretty unnecessary at the same time. One thing that I think my director was extremely smart about was maintaining the discipline of the schedule. Scenes were shot with the utmost of efficiency. So you’re in, and then out. The manner overall is considered as guerrilla filmmaking. Either way, it’s taught me just how possible it is to really make a film.CP: Has Slackistan enjoyed success at the box office?Honestly, looking back on all of it, I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity to have been in such a great movie. The film has been screened in major film festivals across the globe, toured through the U.K, and received some awesome reviews from extremely noteworthy publications. I was invited to participate in the Abu Dhabi Film Festival in October 2010 where Slackistan was screened twice, and on both days there were capacity audiences. The Pakistani Censor Board, however, chose to object to parts of the film and therefore the film couldn’t be screened in cinemas in our own country. This isn’t something I’m too surprised about, given our general political and social climate, but I do feel that a change is on its way and Slackistan will serve as an inspiration to all aspiring filmmakers in Pakistan. So, for us, it’s a win-win situation either way. Overall, it’s been one of the best things ever to happen to me and I’m extremely thankful for every moment of it.

What do you believe are the 3 Keys to Success!Firstly: Freedom; the freedom to think. To be. To let yourself grow and explore the capacity of your own mind. Secondly: Discipline, which is so very important. Once you know what you’ve got to do, you should take action

to make it happen and stop procrastinating. (That’s actually a mental note to myself!)Thirdly: Understanding the people around you. If you’ve got something you’ve thought out, worked on, you’ve now got to share it, obviously, with other people. Figure out how to do that intelligently. If there’s ever more, I’ll let you know once I’m actually successful!

So what can you tell us about your achievements to date?I’ve done lots with my life, but so has everyone around me. The moment I feel like I’ve actually achieved something, like truly affect the minds of people around me, change something or just speak in perfect Punjabi, we’ll talk again.

If you could travel back through time, what single mistake would you correct?Uh, I’d like to be an ‘I-wouldn’t-change-a-thing-because-you-learn-from-your-mistakes’ type of person right now because, generally, that’s who I am. But I think I’d want to revisit and change the times I’ve ever hurt someone. It’s happened a couple of times in the past and I really work at being careful now (given that I’m considered an android by some) but feelings are real and not to be hurt.

Is there one thing that you wish people knew about you, and one thing you wish people didn't know?I wish people knew that I hate being made fun of for my failings in the proper usage of the Urdu language. Recently, no one’s really made me feel too bad about a trait, so I guess I’m good with what people know at the moment.

What exciting plans and developments does the future hold for you? There’s always something going on. Keep in touch and you’ll know soon enough!

Do you have a favourite food? Like there was just one? God made food to be eaten, and I do a great job at that.

Is there a gadget you cannot live without? My iPhone 4.

Something you never forget before going to sleep? To clean the day off my face with some good wipes; to switch on the wardrobe light to use as a nightlight; and to open my bedroom door ever so slightly so that my cat can come and go freely.

And finally, do you have a message for us at CityPages?Firstly, thank you for getting in touch! It’s a pleasure and a surprise to be here in the first place. Other than that, one of the best things in the world is rolling down a hill – it’s so much fun! Try it. (Note: A nice, soft, grassy hill. Let’s not try hurting ourselves okay?)

Rose Brown had a great childhood, helped by the fact that her father was (and is) the legendary drummer/songwriter in enduring popular reggae band UB40. Venturing out into the world of business, she has created a great marketing niche selling Halal Cosmetics in a smart store in a prestigious shopping mall in England’s second city, as well as on the internet. The fact that Halal-certified beauty products were virtually unheard of in the UK, Rose can be considered a pioneer for her cause and, in this exclusive interview with CityPages, Rose tells us more of the story behind “Pure Halal Beauty” and her website www.purehalalbeauty.co.uk ...I've always had an interest in beauty and fashion however my training only goes as far as doing make-up for my grandmas and younger sisters! Prior to opening the store I was studying for a BA Hons degree in Media and Communications at Birmingham City University. I learnt many skills there which have really helped me in the opening of the business, such as design skills and how to use design software, and also PR skills which have helped in my dealing with press and media.

How, and when, did you first get the idea of Halal Cosmetics?I came across Halal Cosmetics in a search for cosmetics that weren't made using animal ingredients. I discovered that you could get Halal-certified products, which helps to guarantee that no animals are used in the making of products, and that these products are also made without alcohol. I was surprised to find that Halal-certified products were thriving in other countries and yet they were unheard of here in the UK where I live, so I set about finding a range of products that I thought would be suitable for the UK market. I'm very proud to have opened the first store in the whole of the UK dedicated to selling only Halal-certified Cosmetics and Beauty Products.

What made you feel that this was something that you would want to do?For me, it's important to try and use more ethical and natural beauty products, particularly those which are cruelty free because I'm vegetarian and I love animals. But also the fact that the products are made without alcohol appealed to me because there's no need to use alcohol in beauty products - because it has no benefits and can often be harsh and irritable to skin. As I mentioned, there was nowhere you could go to get Halal products in the UK, and I personally believe that Halal certification ensures a more ethical product and a fantastic alternative to mainstream products.

So what research did you conduct before finalising your own line of Halal Cosmetics?I found the simplest and most effective way of sourcing the best Halal Cosmetics and beauty products was by sampling products from around the world to determine which were the best, and by close consideration of the range we could offer to our customers in the UK. I then set about trying to improve in all areas.

When you first started the brand, who were your target customers? As a vegetarian I was able to see that Halal Cosmetics have the potential to appeal to a much wider audience than the name might suggest. Obviously

When Beauty Is More Than Just Skin Deep…

we have many Muslim customers who are happy to know that they're able to buy all their essential toiletries and beauty products from one place with peace of mind that they aren't compromising their beliefs, but our products also appeal to those who are conscious of the ingredients used in mainstream beauty products and who want an alternative - such as vegetarians, vegans and people with sensitive skin.

Are you intending to embark on any formal education or training specific to cosmetics or beauty?I've always had an interest in beauty and fashion, but my training only goes as far as doing make-up for my grandmothers and younger sisters! Prior to opening the store I was studying for a BA Honours degree in Media and Communications at Birmingham City University. I learnt many skills there which have really helped me in the opening of the business, such as design skills and how to use design software, and also PR skills which have helped in my dealing with press and media.

What does your family think of your career choice? My mother and father have been very supportive ever since they first found out about my business venture. I've got three sisters too and, although we're all quite different, we're all very close and they are very excited for me.

How did your non-Muslim family react to the concept of starting a Halal line of cosmetics?Everybody was quite shocked, as I only told them about the store a few days before the opening! However once I'd explained to them the ethos behind Halal products they thought it was a great idea, and they're very proud of me. My mother regularly shops with us now!

Were you worried that the concept might not work?Obviously with any business there are risks, however I felt confident that it was such a new and exciting concept and had real potential for growth.

Was it a self-financed project, or did you get some financing from elsewhere?I used my savings, which I'd banked for many years, and also had help from a close friend who believed it was a really great idea.

What has the initial response been like? The response so far has been fantastic and very encouraging. We've had some great press because our store is the first of its kind in the UK. We've also had a fantastic response from all our customers about the products we offer. And our website www.purehalalbeauty.co.uk has had orders from around the world!

What is your hottest-selling product?Because we offer a diverse range of products, it’s hard to single out just one! Our makeup sells fantastically well because it's very pure and beneficial to skin, so a great alternative to mainstream cosmetics, but we also have some very luxurious facial creams that are popular too.

What more can you tell us about your range of products? At Pure Halal Beauty we provide all the essential toiletries and cosmetics, as well as a few luxurious extras. We have a great range of products for women, and we cater for all skin types. We also have lots of male products and a beautiful baby range!

Do you have any visions for expansion?Things seem to be moving really quickly, which is very exciting. We're currently developing our most beautiful and natural range yet and we'll be launching the products very soon. We're also looking at several options for expansion both in the UK and worldwide.

So what are the ingredients of your products? Our ingredients vary massively from product to product, as we offer such a diverse range. Our new natural range will have some of our purest and most exotic ingre-dients to date! Roses, bourbon geraniums, lavender, Sicillian orange and lemon blossom, gardenia, buckthorn, frankincense & myrrh, green grapefruit, organic comfrey, chamomile, rosehip rosewood and argan oil are just some of the fantastic ingredients that will be in the new PHB range.

Suzanne LaFleur started drawing and painting as a small child. She grew up in a family which lived very near the sea in a small town called Southampton, known more famously as "The Hamptons". A town favoured by the artistic fraternity, Jackson Pollack and William DeKooning are just a couple of the artists who painted and had their studios there. It was in such a creative and inspiring environment that Suzanne developed the deep sense of love for nature, as well as a strong connection to the arts, that she later brought with her to the Middle East. Having now returned to the USA and making her home in New York, Suzanne was delighted to grant CityPages an exclusive interview in which she exudes her love of art and enthuses about her next exciting project...

Did you have formal training, or are you a self taught artist?I would say I combine both. My formal training (at the Art Students League in New York City) was only a part of my art education. Equally important were my frequent visits to museums and galleries, studying the work of other artists through books and then undertaking my own experimentation. All these factors continue to have a significant influence on my work, and my artistic process seems to evolve as my life experience grows.

What more can you tell us about the Art Students League? The Art Students League in New York City was founded in 1875 by artists, and for artists. Luminaries such as Georgia O'Keefe, Mark Rothko, and Robert Rauchenberg are among the great artists who have studied and taught there. My education at this venerable institution helped me to develop my own artistic vision, and I also learned the technical skills which I incorporate in my painting process.

What medium do you use primarily?Oil paint is my favourite medium. Most of the old masters worked in oil, and its inherent durability and non-fading quality have allowed their works to be preserved for centuries. I also work with pastels and charcoal.

Where have you exhibited so far?I actually started exhibiting my work In Kuwait, showing my work in places such as Illusion Gallery, Bayt Lothan, the Sheraton, the French Embassy and at the Al Thuraya Complex. I have also held exhibitions in Lebanon, France, and New York City. Most recently my work has been on display in New York City at the Coleman Burke Gallery in Chelsea, and in Cipriani on Wall Street. There has also been an art exhibition affiliated with Google; a Credit Swisse curated event; and a fund raiser for cancer research through New York University.

Do you outline in pencil before you begin your painting?Rarely. My process is to go directly to the surface of the canvas. I draw upon my conscious and subconscious memory to create images that reflect my life experience.

What major things have you noticed about your own work as you have progressed?

Residing in Kuwait, Lebanon and the south of France for the past 20 years greatly influenced the progression of my work as an artist. A richness of intensity indicated by broader strokes and vibrant colours has evolved as a result of emotions evoked by my physical environment. The cultural diversity of New York City has helped me to further expand my artistic palate in new directions.

What would you recommend to someone who thinks they cannot draw or paint? There is a wonderful book called “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain”. It supports my belief that we can all draw, and are all innately artistic.

A lot of artists like to work at night - when is your favourite time to work?

There is no particular time of the day... I work when I feel inspired, and that could be at any time. When I am inspired I can go on working for hours and hours, as I lose all sense of time.

Do you try to convey messages through your paintings? My art is an expression of personal experiences and emotions that I want to share with people. My message is that we can all understand each other and the human condition better through art. Art is truly the universal language.

Do you work with any specific styles or subject matter?I am a contemporary abstract painter. My subconscious memories of people and places are portrayed through my work.

Which artists have influenced you? The impressionists, such as Renoir and Monet, have had a great influence on my work. Spending a great deal of time in Europe, I visited the art studios of Renoir and Monet many times, including visits to Monet's Giverny Gardens. The way these artists captured the

light of this region is astonishing to me. I also study the techniques of the Old Masters, such as Rembrandt and Valesquez.

Have you any incomplete paintings?Yes, I always have at least one incomplete painting, and sometimes I have several at once. Sometimes, I find myself working for months on a single piece until I reach the result that I want. At times, I feel as if I am in a battle with the canvas!

How do you get ideas to create a piece? What inspires you?My ideas come to me through many sources. I could be walking in a beautiful garden, or even have a memory that could be the start of a new painting. I am mostly inspired by nature and its abundant colours. New environments and the changing seasons also inspire me.

You are about to embark on a new project - an exhibition at sea. What more can you tell us about it?I am honoured to have been offered a solo exhibition aboard The Silver Spirit, which is the newest luxury ship in the famous Silver Seas cruise line. We will

depart from Rome on August 20th on a one week art cruise, travelling to different ports in Italy and Croatia, finally docking in Venice on August 27th. I am also honoured to collaborate with a wonderful non-profit art organization called "Arts Horizons." Their mission is to transform the lives of children through the power of the arts, and our cruise is a fund raiser to support their noble cause.

Page 38: April Issue

Have you received any awards during your exhibitions in Kuwait and Lebanon? My exhibitions in Kuwait and Lebanon were well reviewed by the local and international media, which is reward in itself! But I was formally honoured by the Lincoln Center Visual Arts Director, Tom Lollar, who spoke about my work at a recent exhibition. And a couple of months ago I received the honour of Membership to the Venerable National Arts Club.

What are your future goals or plans? Of course, I will be delighted if lots of people join me on the upcoming art cruise this August! I'll be giving art demonstrations on board, as well as leading art excursions to places we visit. It should be quite an adventure!Another goal is to be offered an exhibition at the Kuwait Museum of Modern Art. I have been there many times, and consider it to be a gem of a museum.

Ultimately, I hope that my work will be a source of inspiration for many. If my paintings encourage people to take an inner journey into their own lives and memory, I will have succeeded. I would also be very happy if my work encourages other people to discover and pursue their own artistic dreams.

What do you hope the viewer will take away from your paintings?I hope to capture a viewer’s imagination. You may have noticed that I do not title my paintings - this is because I like my work to provide an unbiased canvas through which viewers can associate with their own life memories.

How long does it take to complete a painting? Which of your works took the most time and effort, and why?A painting seemingly takes a life time; I struggle with each and every one of them. Knowing when a painting is done is still a process of discovery for me.

Do you have any websites you would like to share?Actually, there are a few websites that may interest readers. My personal art website is www.SuzanneLaFleur.Org at which anyone can view my works of art, my biography and other information about my work. There's also a link there to get information about the Art Cruise and exhibition in August.I also encourage people to visit the Arts Horizons website at www.ArtsHorizons.org as they do amazing work, enriching lives of children through the arts. And if anyone wants to find out more about the art cruise in August, they can visit http:// lipserve.com/lafleur/index.html The email for art cruise information is [email protected]. By phone, it's 1 973 439 1700

How can someone buy one of your paintings?Firstly, I welcome everyone who is interested in my paintings to contact me - even if you are not planning to acquire one. I enjoy discussing my work, answering questions and talking about art in general! I can be contacted through my website www.SuzanneLaFleur.org or by email at [email protected]

What words of advice would you give to beginner artists?Follow your heart and never give up!

Do you have a message for the people (and your friends) in Kuwait?Kuwait will always have a warm place in my heart and I will always feel at home there. I thank all of my friends and the Kuwaiti people for their unending support. I hope to return soon!

Finally, what message do you have for us at CityPages?I would like to thank you for taking such an interest in my work and in my story. And an especially big “thank you” for being so supportive of the arts in general!

World Health Day and All-year-roundWomen’s Health Days

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has once again promoted its World Health Day which, this year, fell on Thursday 7th April. Each year they major on a central theme and, this time around, chose to focus attention on “Antimicrobial resistance and its global spread". We live in an era of medical breakthroughs with new wonder drugs available to treat conditions that a few decades ago, or even a few years ago in the case of HIV/AIDS, would have proved fatal. For World Health Day 2011, WHO launched a worldwide campaign to safeguard these medicines for future generations. Antimicrobial resistance and its global spread threaten the continued effectiveness of many medicines used today to treat the sick, while at the same time it risks jeopardizing important advances being made against major infectious killers.

At the same time, World Health Day provides an excellent opportunity to reflect on a whole spectrum of health-related issues, and to consider preventions as well as cures. Elsewhere in this issue we have taken a look at men’s health issues so here, we have been inspired by the “Pilates and More Women’s Health Club” to consider some of the positive services available for ladies in Kuwait to maintain good health. For example, have you ever tried Pilates?

Pilates

Pilates is a fitness system developed in the early 20th century by a German, Joseph Pilates, which has grown rapidly in popularity during recent years. Pilates exercises use the mind to control the muscles and focus on the core muscles (back and abdominals) which help keep the body balanced, healthy and nicely toned. The Pilates method uses controlled movements in the form of mat exercises or equipment to tone, strengthen, and stretch the body; it focuses on the quality of movement, teaches body awareness, proper muscle recruitment, and body-mind connection, so it is an excellent tool for injury recovery and rehabilitation. Ladies worldwide who enjoy regular Pilates sessions find that it shapes the muscles, makes them more flexible, makes them look taller, and generally improves their mental and physical well-being!

The Pilates and More Women’s Health Club, which has locations in Salmiya and Mahboula, offers a whole range of Pilates sessions run by

internationally-certified instructors but, as their name suggests, they also offer a whole lot more...

Originally developed for building up the muscles and increasing the bone density of Soviet cosmonauts, Whole Body Vibration Training is one of their more unlikely offerings, and surely worth a trial. Vibrations from a platform are transmitted to the body (i.e. the muscles) of the user, and these vibrations trigger reflexes in the muscles which thereby exercise the muscles and improve circulation. Some of the positive effects experienced by ladies who enjoy this training include an Increase in muscle power, improved coordination, improved mobility, improved metabolism, and even a positive effect on cellulites with corresponding and noticeable improvement in skin health.

Medical research estimates that as much as 90% of illness is stress related, including cardio vascular disease, depression, anxiety, some types of diabetes, colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, infertility, and suppression of immune system.

Yoga emphases the body’s relaxation response and self-healing process with nscious relaxation and deep breathing, and activates the parasympathetic system. The inverting, twisting & compressing yoga postures enable the circulation of body fluids and assist the active functioning of the immune system.

There are many variations of Yoga to suit different people and different situations, and the expert practitioners at Pilates and More Women’s Health Club will help you to select exactly the right session for you. Whether you opt for Hatha Yoga, Yoga for Back Pain, Yoga for Weight Loss, Pregnancy Yoga, Symbolic / Aumkara Meditation, or Candle Meditation, you are sure to be delighted with the results.

The Pilates and More Women’s Health Club organises around 100 group classes every week. Not only do they offer flexible memberships with low monthly subscriptions and a money-back guarantee, but you are encouraged to take advantage of free start-up sessions and even a free trial membership.

Why not call them now to arrange for YOUR special package, and start reaping the benefits of good health day-by-day.

To reduce your risk of a deadly crash:• Wear your seat belt.• Don’t exceed the designated speed limit.• Don't drive under the influence sleep-inducing medication.• Don't drive while sleepy.Falls and poisoning are other leading causes of fatal accidents. Try to avoid trans fat entirely.• Maintain a healthy weight and include physical activity in your daily routine.• If you have diabetes, keep your blood sugar under control.• If you choose to drink alcohol, do so only in moderation.5. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary DiseaseChronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a group of chronic lung conditions, including bronchitis and emphysema. To reduce the risk of contracting COPD:• Don't smoke, and avoid exposure to secondhand smoke.• Minimize exposure to chemicals and air pollution.6. Type 2 DiabetesType 2 diabetes, which is the most common type of diabetes, affects the way your body uses blood sugar (glucose). To help prevent type 2 diabetes:• Maintain a healthy weight, and lose those excess pounds if you're overweight.• Eat a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables and low-fat foods.• Include physical activity in your daily routine.7. SuicideSuicide is another leading men's health concern, though not necessarily always re-garded as such. But an important risk factor for suicide amongst men is depressions so, if you think you may be depressed, you should consult your doctor. Treatment is available! If you're contemplating suicide, call for emergency medical help or go the nearest emergency room. 9. In addition:• Eat a healthy diet, and limit the amount of salt you consume.• Include physical activity in your daily routine and lose excess pounds if you're overweight.• Take medications as prescribed.10. Alzheimer's DiseaseTo date, there’s sadly no proven way to prevent the onset of Alzheimer's Disease, but popular opinion suggests you might consider taking these steps:• Take care of your heart. High blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and high cholesterol may each increase the risk of developing Alzheimer's.• Avoid head injuries, as it appears there may be a link between head injury and future risk of Alzheimer's.• Maintain a healthy weight, and include physical activity in your daily routine.• Avoid tobacco.• Stay socially active.• Maintain mental fitness. Practice mental exercises, and take steps to learn new things.Of course there’s no guarantee that by following all this advice you will live to be one hundred but, by having knowledge of the risks and by taking sensible precautions to avert the dangers, you will maintain good health and enjoy life for many, many years to come.

Vallettacame into existence as a refuge for injured soldiers and pilgrims during the Crusades in the 16th

century. Before then it had simply been an arid land with no buildings except the St. Elmo watch tower.

In Search of Maltesers?

Nowadays, of course, Valletta is Malta’s capital and also a UNESCO World Heritage site, and is one of the country’s main attractions. It has its fair share of beautiful architecture, wine bars and cafés, and beautiful views of Malta’s Grand Harbour which is considered by many as the most beautiful in the Mediterranean. During the day it bustles with business activity but, as each day draws to a close, the rhythm becomes more relaxed as people take time to watch the world go by.

If you visit Valetta, you should take a stroll through the flea market that is held every Sunday morning in front of St. James Bastion and St. James Counter Guard, just outside the city walls. It is the country’s largest market and is well worth a visit if you are looking for bargains – but visit a Souk before you leave Kuwait to ensure you brush up on your negotiation skills! The market sells everything from food, second-user goods and even fake designer-labelled items. During the week, there is also an open air market situated in Market Street.

Situated in the centre of Valletta is the Grandmaster’s Palace in Palace Square, which was built between 1568 and 1574. The government of Malta is housed here and, when parliament is not in session, the palace is open to the public without charge. You can visit the armoury in the basement, which is one of the largest in the world; the Hall of the Ambassadors, where portraits of Grand Masters and European rulers are displayed; and the Hall of the Supreme Council of the Knights, where you will marvel at the beautiful frescoes.

For those who like to travel back in time there’s The Valletta Living History show, which is a great way for all ages to learn about the history and culture of the city. This takes place in the shopping and entertainment complex, “The Embassy”, and is situated in the centre of the city. The show highlights the city’s historical milestones as well as the ways of life of the population throughout the city’s development from the first settlers to its role in the Second World War.

The Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, located in the suburbs of Valletta, is considered to be one of the most important prehistoric monuments in the world. The Hypogeum was used as a sanctuary as well as a pre-Christian underground burial site, and the remains of seven thousand people have been found here. It was discovered during construction works in 1902 and consists of three levels. However, you will need to book well in advance as only 80 people are allowed entry each day!

Another highlight of any trip might be a visit to the Casa Rocca Piccola, which is the family home of the Marquis de Piro and provides a great insight into how the Maltese nobility has lived over the past few hundred years. You are able to take a glimpse of personal objects and paintings in the house, which adds a human touch to the visit. The tour ends with a walk through tunnels under the building which were used as air raid shelters during the Second World War.

Valetta is a magical place and is hard to describe with words. Although the city is steeped in history and retains its beauty, there is also a dynamic, forward looking aspect to it. Why not hop on a plane and see for yourself?

Chef Emeril Lagasse received his first culinary experience from his mother,

Hilda, when he was a boy growing up in the small town of Fall River, Massachusetts. As a teenager, he worked at a Portuguese bakery where he mastered the art of bread and pastry baking. Upon high school graduation, Lagasse was offered a full scholarship to the New England Conservatory of Music, but decided to pursue a career as a professional chef. He earned a degree from the respected culinary fortress, Johnson and Wales University, and later received an honorary Doctorate degree from the university. Lagasse then traveled to Paris and Lyon where he polished his skills and learned the art of classic French cuisine. Returning to the United States, Lagasse practiced his art in fine restaurants in New York, Boston and Philadelphia before heading south to the Big Easy. Lured to New Orleans by Dick and Ella Brennan, Lagasse established his star at their legendary restaurant, Commander's Palace,

where he was executive chef for seven and a half years.

Lagasse is now the chef-proprietor of 12 restaurants in New Orleans, Las Vegas, Orlando, Miami,

and Bethlehem. In 1990, Chef Emeril opened Emeril’s Restaurant in the Warehouse District in downtown New Orleans. Two years later, he opened NOLA Restaurant in the French Quarter. In 1995, Emeril brought his “New

New Orleans” cooking to Las Vegas and opened Emeril's New Orleans Fish House, located in

Barbecue Shrimp withPetite Rosemary Biscuits

These shrimp aren’t really barbecued on a grill. Instead, this is my take on a classic New Orleans dish, where whole shrimp are baked in butter, olive oil, and spices. When I opened Emeril’s we took the dish up another

notch and created this amazingly rich sauce for sautéed shrimp. Once you make the barbecue base, it will keep for a month, tightly covered in the refrigerator. Try the same sauce with oysters by first making the sauce in a sauce pan and adding the oysters after the sauce has reduced enough to coat the back of a spoon.

INGREDIENTS:r2 pounds medium (21-24 count) raw shrimp in their shellsr1 tablespoon Emeril’s Original Essence or Creole Seasoningr1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepperr1/4 cup Barbecue Sauce Base, recipe follows r1 tablespoon vegetable oilr12 Petite Rosemary Biscuits, recipe followsr1 cup heavy creamr2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into pieces

METHOD:Peel and devein the shrimp, leaving only their tails attached. (Reserve the shells, if desired, to make the shrimp stock.) Season the shrimp with the Essence and black pepper, tossing to coat evenly. Cover and refrigerate while making the sauce base and biscuits.

Heat the oil in a large skillet over high heat. Add the seasoned shrimp and cook, stirring, until they begin to turn pink, about 2 minutes. Add the cream and barbecue sauce. Reduce the heat to medium-high and simmer, stirring, until reduced by half, about 3 minutes. Transfer the shrimp to a platter with tongs. Gradually whisk the butter into the sauce. Remove from the heat.

Place 2 or 3 biscuits on each plate. Divide the shrimp among the biscuits and top each serving with 1/3 to 1/2 cup of the sauce. Serve immediately.

METHOD: Heat the olive oil in a medium, heavy saucepan over medium high heat. Add the onions, salt, pepper, and bay leaves, and cook, stirring, until the onions are soft, about 2 minutes. Add the garlic, lemons, and white wine, and cook for 2 minutes. Add the shrimp stock and Worcestershire sauce and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer until the sauce is reduced to 1/2-cup, about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Strain the sauce through a fine mesh strainer, pressing on the solids with the back of a spoon. Set aside until needed. (The sauce base can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 3 days, or frozen for up to 2 months.)

METHOD: Sift the dry ingredients into a large mixing bowl. Work the butter into the flour with your fingers or a fork until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add ½ cup of the buttermilk, a little at a time, using your hands, to work it in just until thoroughly incorporated and a smooth ball of dough forms. Add up to an additional 1/4 cup buttermilk if the mixture is too dry, being very careful not to overwork or over-handle the dough, or the biscuits will be tough. On a lightly floured surface, pat the dough into a circle about 7-inches in diameter and 1/2-inch thick. Using a 1-inch round cookie cutter, cut out 12 biscuits. Place the biscuits on a large baking sheet. Bake until golden on top and lightly brown on the bottom, 10 to 12 minutes. Serve warm.

It's not often that I get to see two films in a day both of which, different as they were, could be described as masterpieces. These are two to see. If you have seen them already, watch them again. Buy them on DVD and keep them to watch in five years' time. I had avoided watching Joel and Ethan Coen's finely tuned, beautifully crafted "True Grit" since I had thought that Jeff Bridges as the one-eyed marshal Rooster Cogburn could never replace John Wayne in the original 1969 version. Fortunately, he doesn't have to, this is really not a remake. Casting is

more 'primus inter pares' and Bridges gives the other characters much more room in this darker, harsher interpretation than in the original. The beauty of the movie is in the weighty precision of the prose, lifted wholesale from Charles Portia' original novel, as authentic as if reading Mark Twain and wonderfully offset by the landscapes of Santa Fe and Texas. The Coen's have taken a "formal, reverent approach" to the Western genre, with its emphasis on simplicity, adventure and high quest. The stilted patois of the characters and the love of language that suffuses the film, makes it similar to their other work, but without irony. A man's "yea" was indeed "yea" and his "nay" "nay" in those days of strength and wilderness, without a whisper of tongue in cheek. Kim Darby's Matty Ross has a worthy successor in thirteen-year-old Hailee Seinfeld. There is something fractious, irritating yet deeply admirable about Matty, in particular the Presbyterian-Protestant ethic so strongly imbued in a 14-year-old girl. "Is your every utterance to be indecipherable, Marshal? Your vocalisations are less words than outhouse rumbles after overconsumption of whiskey and chicken wings. Does your throat retain an unfortunate tumbleweed?" The role that the soundtrack plays in rhythmic distancing of perspective lends the film a powerfully memorable breadth and the alternation of traditional orchestral “western” music with intimate folk gives it a spare, accurate feel. We become particularly aware of this in the final scenes, when the epilogue is set to a honky-tonk solo piano, a striking contrast from the mythic sweep of the stars as Cogburn, exhausted, saves her life and brings Mattie “home”. What follows the epilogue is Iris DeMent’s haunting version of Elisha Hoffman's 1887 classic from Deuteronomy 33:27 'Leaning on the Everlasting Arms' which plays over the credits and appears at intervals throughout the movie. I was spellbound and close to tears. Unmissable. And now for the second. “The King’s Speech”. Pip-pip, toodle-oo. Jolly good show, a showcase of British stiff upper lip idiosyncrasy it isn’t. Thrust reluctantly on to a world stage by the forced abdication of his urbane, sophisticated brother, poor Bertie is ill-equipped for the age of wireless. Attempting as the then Prince Albert to speak at the British Empire Exhibition in 1925 into a black hole of wretched, pitiful, agonising stammering and sweaty verbal indecision, the silences would have filled a football stadium. A monstrous microphone, a heat-seeking metaphor for the sum of all the Prince's fears, hovers

menacingly. His wife - a spectacularly understated, subtle and emotionally-rich Helena Bonham-Carter, remarkable mother to the princesses Elizabeth and Margaret, engages the services of an eccentric Australian, Lionel Logue, (Geoffrey Rush) a speech therapist operating out of a Harley Street basement. “My house, my rules. You come to me, I don’t come to you. First rule. My name is Lionel and that’s what you call me. I’ll call you Bertie”. Colin Firth as the future King George VI, looked as if he has been slapped in the face with a wet fish.Logue realises that the underlying causes of Bertie’s affliction reside in his family’s history. Michael Gambon’s overbearing, impatient George V shows a complete lack of understanding as he imagines that all Bertie has to do is persist and he’ll somehow by dint of sheer effort of will overcome his affliction. Older brother David (Guy Pearce)– the future King Edward VIII - knows exactly how to reduce his verbally impoverished brother to ineffectual, frustrated, silent misery.Bertie and Lionel fence and clash, agonise, sing and swear, creating together a landscape both epic and intimate. Lionel is untrained and formally unqualified; his experience was gained in the emotional wreckage in the aftermath of the First World War. He is a failed actor, rejected for the part of Richard III by an amateur dramatics company in Putney, is given to grand gesture but is unintimidated by the blue-blood from the Palace whose entire training has been in ways to hold everything together. Logue guides his patient through the minefield of Coronation responses, ticking off a somewhat ovine Archbishop of Canterbury (Derek Jacobi) during the rehearsals. Cometh the hour, cometh the man; the film’s culminating scene is the triumphal King’s Speech of 1939, a rallying cry to an Empire to rise up, stand, and fight the menace of Nazi Germany. The battlefields of emotional silence generated by the film are nothing short of stunning. An absolutely stellar cast includes a totally believable Churchill (Timothy Spall), who, casting off the unctuous obsequiousness of Peter Pettigrew in the Harry Potter series, is just beginning to develop the bulldog voice so beloved of a nation at war.An avalanche of awards followed. Of course they did. Visually authentic and dramatically almost perfect, this one's the best by far, for a long time.

S The Fastest Cars in the World

Porsche Carrera GT

Fastest cars in the world are the super sports cars, fast, power-ful, and sexy. These super sports cars, the exotic cars of the

automotive world, are high performance cars, often called ultra sports cars or super cars. They come from famous companies like Ferrari, AC Cobra, Lotus, McLaren, Porsche, Maseratti, Lamborghini, Jaguar, BMW, Bugatti, Shelby and Koenigsegg. Super sports cars are remarkable for style, performance and exclusivity. The exotic sports cars are engineered to be the fastest cars in the world for drivers with a need for speed, and come with mind-blowing styling and big price tags. In the crowded field of family sedans and SUVs, the super sports cars can really stop traffic. A super sports car is not just about owning a fast car. Part of the appeal of a sports car is related to the demand for luxury goods, similar to the apprecia-tion of fine Swiss watches, vintage French wine and designer clothes. The super sports cars are distinctive cars that are thrilling to drive. They are the pinnacle of engineering and design excellence. At the wheel of a super sports car, the driver gets the ultimate driving experience. The early companies that built super sports cars were started and run by auto enthusiasts who liked to race. Their slogan was "Race on Sunday, sell on Mon-day," because competition and speed sold these cars. Although the cars were outstanding, the companies often ran short of working capital. Companies and brands changed ownership frequently. Those that survive in the business today are few compared to the hundreds of companies that failed.

When Is a Sports Car an Exotic or Super Sports Car?Super sports cars, also called exotic sports cars, are sports cars produced in small quantities

of no more than 8,000 cars a year. If the production of a model exceeds this limit, the mass-

produced car is simply called a sports car. Examples of mass-produced sports cars are BMW

M3 and M5 models.

Performance Features of a Super Sports CarThe typical super sports car is built for speed and handling, rather than passenger comfort and

convenience. It starts with a powerful engine. It often has two doors and two seats, but some

have three seats and some, called 2+2, have two additional small rear seats. It may win awards

on the racetrack, like the Porsche, Ferrari and Lotus, or it may be strictly for the road, like the

Lamborghini. Some models of super sports cars are not even street-legal in the United States.

The super sports cars may come with luxury interiors or may be stripped down. There are

super sports cars with automatic transmission. Super sports cars are even available with

four-wheel drive, like the Porsche, Lamborghini and Bugatti Veyron. A few super sports cars

come with rear wheel drive and rear engine, but they are the exception. Many cars in this elite

class are still hand-crafted and custom made. All have high standards of excellence.

When Is Ita Sports Car?Sports cars are recognized by their precise handling, quick acceleration, fast braking and design aesthetics. Most automotive manufacturers offer something they market as a sports car, or a sports compact, a sports sedan, a muscle car, a hot hatch. But these models don't perform like true sports cars.

April Planet Overview: Beginning on April 3, the New Moon in impetuous Aries gets involved with puffed-up Jupiter, and they both oppose cautious Saturn, making you feel like you're sitting on tacks. You're forced to extend the boundaries of your comfort zone in your finances, romantic life, or health decisions. This is the month for new action, as a cluster of planets in Aries gives you the impetus to tackle any challenges that lie ahead, including those you may have been avoiding. Use the month to strategize. When Mercury turns direct on April 23, prepare to put new plans into motion.

A r ies(Mar 21 – Apr 19)

What a powerhouse month this will be! Several planets moving through your sign

will get you motivated to make some changes. You will be eager to start new projects, be active, and take the lead. The Sun, Mercury, Mars, Venus, Jupiter, and Uranus will all spend time in Aries. You will be confident and proactive and jump on opportunities

if they look promising. A New Moon in Aries will add to the excitement and help

you take the initiative and focus on getting things done. Mercury retrograde in your sign until April 23 will complicate communication and logistics.

Cancer (Jun 21 – Jul 22)

Your career may take off this month if you put the

necessary effort into making some changes. This is a good time to initiate contact with a potential mentor, circulate

your resume, and follow new opportunities. Several

planets in the sign of Aries will be in square to your sign, though, and make you feel pressured and stressed. At this time, you will have to be proactive and assertive. This won't be comfortable for you, but it will be the only way to improve your situation. A New Moon in Aries on April 3 will also motivate you to do things differently.

Taur us(Apr 20 – May 20)

You will experience inner tension most of the time this month, and you may spend time by yourself. There will be several planets moving through Aries, bringing a lot of restless energy and the need for change. However, the Sun, Mercury, Mars,

Venus, Jupiter, and Uranus will also be in your sector of the unconscious,

not in the best aspect to your sign, so this may create frustration because of fear and anxiety. Pluto in Capricorn will keep you focused on life-changing activities, such as travel and education. This is a long-term influence that will affect you for years.

Leo(Jul 23 – Aug 22)

Take action on some of your goals for the future. You may want to further your education, communicate your ideas, or travel more. This is a good time to get things moving and take

the initial steps. You will be motivated and eager to move

forward. With several planets in Aries, you will be energetic and restless and find it hard to deal with routine. You will long to explore new territory and have adventures. Life will be fresh and exciting under this influence if you're open to change. Because Leo is a Fixed Sign, you may not find this state easy to embrace.

Gemin i (May 21 – Jun 20)

You will be busy with friends and activities related to organizations you're involved

with. This would be a good time to organize a hike with your buddies or start a new project together. The Sun, Mercury, Mars, Venus, Jupiter, and Uranus will move through the sign of Aries. This assertive energy

will help you confidently step into a leadership role when called upon. You

may be an event organizer or the one who takes the initial steps to get things underway. A New Moon in Aries on April 3 will further emphasize Aries energy and keep your energy level up for weeks

Vi r go (Aug 23 – Sep 22)

Venus will oppose your sign until April 21, bringing easy relations

with others. This transit will help you relate well to your partner

and the general public. For a few weeks you will relax your need to control others and you will be more cooperative. Neptune moves to join Venus

in Pisces on April 4, and will remain in that sign all month.

This planet will add understanding, compassion, and the ability to communicate telepathically. Several planets in the sign of Aries this month may cause hasty decisions and arguments with others over money.

73April - 2011

Scor p io (Oct 23 – Nov 21)

You may be irritated and impatient at work this month. Relationships with co-workers and managers will be strained, and you may engage in more than one argument. A heavy emphasis on Aries as the Sun, Mercury, Mars, Venus, Jupiter, and

Uranus move through the sign will make you restless and in need of change.

Rules and regulations will be frustrating and you won't be willing to comply. Neptune in Aquarius briefly at the first of the month will see you overwhelmed with family obligations. The Sun moves to Taurus on April 20, helping you calm down a bit and relax.

L ib r a (Sep 23 – Oct 22)

A powerful stellium of planets in Aries this month will make you restless and more

confrontational than usual. With the Sun, Mercury, Mars, Venus, Jupiter, and Uranus traveling opposite your sign, you will be assertive and proactive. However, you may go

overboard at times and need to learn to use the power and energy of Aries

to your advantage. A New Moon in Aries on April 3 will bring out this aggressive and extroverted energy even more. You will be able to develop leadership skills during the next few weeks. All of these influences will oppose Saturn in your sign, causing some personal stress.

Sag i t ta r ius (Nov 22 – Dec 21)

This will be an energetic and busy time for you, with a hectic pace and lots of

change. With the Sun, Mercury, Mars, Venus, Jupiter, and Uranus transiting in Aries, you will start many new projects and be proactive in getting what you want. This stellium will mainly motivate you to work on

creative hobbies and leisure activities. Also, your love life will heat up with both

Venus and Mars in your love sector. You will be flir tatious, fun loving, and up for a little adventure. A New Moon in Aries will bring out your leadership ability. You will develop confidence and assertiveness.

Capr i cor n (Dec 22 – Jan 19)

You may be under pressure this month as several planets transit in Aries in square

to your sign and transiting Pluto in Capricorn. You will be impatient and restless at home and with your family. Little things will make you angry or cause frustration. The Sun, Mercury, Mars, Venus, Jupiter, and Uranus will move through Aries, bringing

complexity and a lot of change. Be careful during Mercury's retrograde in

Aries until April 22. This transit may bring headaches related to communication and logistics. Many of your plans will go awry and important information may be lost or misplaced

Aquar ius (Jan 20 – Feb 18)

Neptune will be in your sign briefly at the first of the month. You've been suffering

from a lack of clarity, but this will be rectified when this planet moves to Pisces on April 4. Expect to be busy with relatives, friends, and your community this month. Several planets will transit through Aries

and affect this area of your life. The Sun, Mercury, Mars, Venus, Jupiter, and

Uranus will energize and stimulate your involvement with these people and transform the way you relate to them. An Aquarius New Moon will also serve to bring excitement and anticipation. You may take the lead on a project.

Pisces (Feb 19 – Mar 20)

All of a sudden this month you will have the urge to improve your finances and make

more money. You will put a lot of energy into getting organized, beginning new projects, and being proactive about debt, savings, and investing. A New Moon in Aries will help you take action all month and create opportunities to

get on a solid footing. However, several planets in this sign may inspire you to

take too many risks that won't be well thought out. Be careful of any transaction or purchase carried out during the retrograde period of Mercury, which lasts until April 22.
