Okay, that’s decidedly not my occupation. Yet, I seem to be doing a lot of it. And the devil IS in the details.

In April, we successfully co-hosted a Tire Rack® Street Survival school with Mahoning Valley and NEOhio Regions of SCCA. We’re planning on another school in the fall; so watch emails and the web.

We’re fast approaching the Memorial Day weekend HPDE and Club Race. We’re watching the weather and registrations with baited breath. If you know anyone who would like to attend as participant, please let me know. If you want a great drive and some interesting scenery—both on and off the track, plan on coming down for a day or even for a few hours. There’s lots to do and see in the area.

June has two driving events for members. First is a leisurely drive across the Western Reserve to the Greene Eagle Winery northeast of Warren and near the Mosquito Lake State Park. We finish off June with a second Explore the Valley Poker Run hosted by Vice President Jon Stupar.

July’s Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix is a CCA regional event, so we cleared our local schedule so you can plan your days accordingly. There will be at least one drive to events. Finally, take time to shine up your ride, because we are the featured marque at the July 27 Gervasi Winery Cruise-In with displays and support bv Cain BMW.

My planner’s hat is on for our twenty-fifth anniversary Sunday-afternoon griller social at the Emerald Necklace Marina in Rocky River on August 7. While our designated BMW Center liaisons—members who work specifically with each Center to make them aware of the Chapter and our activities—are asking for help to make this a memorable event, I’m still exploring options as well. Watch the web calendar, the newsletter, and email blasts for more details!

I want to pause to thank those members who have contributed to the turnaround of the Chapter in the past few years. Our efforts are far from complete and there’s much still to do to bring us back to our previous stature. However, there are individuals who have given their time and efforts to fill in the gaps as they have been able. I’d like to specifically recognize the following Chapter members:• Doug Thoms—countless hours involving the HPDE and Club Racing and administrative matters• Rick Staikoff—being willing to be the “face” of the Chapter as our Event Crisis Communicator• Kathy Lyle—stepping in as Treasurer on short notice and handling our finances• Jimmy Oldja—also stepping in on short notice to fill a critical role• Brian Nawrocki—again, a “pinch hitter” who has provided critical aid, especially for Memorial Day weekend, among other events• Dick Frykman—our multi-year Windy City/California transplant who has helped with HPDE and Street Survival—enjoy retirement, but we’ll miss you!• Dennis Hall—assuming not just the critical role as Newsletter Editor, but Advertising Manager, and very recently stepping up to be our new Chief Instructor as wellAdditional members who are always there to lend a hand when they can include Vice President Jon Stupar, Board Member Jack Steele, long-time Membership Chair and now ZBimmer Coordinator Dave Fisher, former Newsletter Editor Rich Loney, Dave Ronyak and Bill Stewart among others. For those of you whom I’ve neglected to mention, please know I appreciate your efforts, your stepping in to assist, representing the Chapter well to all we meet. I cannot run this Chapter alone; I’m glad that I’ve got members who will carry some of the load. Please take a moment to thank them when you see them next.

Now, start planning for driving season! I’ll try to make the moments worth your while!

We’re gambling on a second Explore the Valley Poker Run, celebrating the Chapter’s 25th and the National Park Services’ 100th anniversaries.

Reminiscent of the “Discover the Valley Rally” days, this drive will lead intrepid explorers down winding and picturesque roads through the extensive Cuyahoga Valley National Park. At the end of the rally, the best poker hand wins!

The day will begin at the Montrose (West Market) Panera Bread where participants will fortify themselves and start registration at 9:15 a.m. until the drivers’ meeting at 9:45 a.m. The drive will be at the entrants’ own pace but the last checkpoint will close at 2:30 p.m. Lunch and awards will be at Pub Bricco where participants are responsible for their meals from the menu.

Cost of the event is $10 per hand (with multiple hands available), payable the day of the event in cash or by check made out to Northern Ohio Chapter BMW Car Club of America. A fifty percent (50%) portion of the proceeds will benefit Make-a-Wish.

Vol. 27 No. 1 I Spring 2016

Imagine the impact of 2 to 20 Z cars cruising down the road together! That’s part of the attraction for the many folks who gather together under the banner of ZBimmers.

It all began quite innocently during Homecoming 1999 on the front lawn of the BMW manufacturing facility in Spartanburg SC where the Zs were built. A silver Z met a red Z, met a charcoal Z and vowed to drive together on a regular basis since they all garaged in northeastern Ohio. Through the magic of the Internet, they also knew a blue M that wanted to join in the fun. Those four Zs did the Inaugural Drive the following month, starting a tradition of monthly activities that continues to this day.

Through the years, the e-mail roster expanded to almost 100 Zs from all over northern Ohio, adjoining states and even Canada.

The Inaugural Four, as they’re known in the ZBimmer annals, were Dave and Pam Fisher in the silver Z, John and Natalie Black in the charcoal one and John Niemczura in the blue M. Bob Miller and yours truly drove the red Z. We met at Fisher’s in Peninsula on October 3, 1999 for that first drive, not knowing that 18 years later, the ZBimmers would still endure. Interestingly, all those inaugural Zs, except the red one, are still garaged with their original owners!

17 Years of ZBimmer Miles and SmilesLOOKING BACK Article and photos by Cindy Reller

Here are the Inaugural Four as they began that first drive: (L to R) Bob, Pam, John N, Natalie, John B and Dave.

Page 8: April l May l June Western Reserve Winery Tour · C. L. Harrison (secretary@nohiobmwcca.org or calling 330.212.9280) Jun 12 Western Reserve Winery Tour Meet: Panera Bread, 8480 East

Pam suggested that we plan the route over brunch and then drive until dinner time. This schedule became a tradition and an opportunity to relieve the day’s adventures again over dinner.

John N is credited with naming the last drive of each season as Pumpkin Run. Every attempt to name it something else invariably failed and the 2015 drive was the 17th Annual Pumpkin Run.

John Franklin coined the phrase “Drive and Eat” while the ZBimmers were on a weekender to Lexington, Kentucky. We started out at an eatery in the Akron area and then lunched in Columbus. As we continued down the freeway on the way to Lexington, he broadcast “Drive and Eat. Drive and Eat.” over the Talk-abouts, and it became our motto. It certainly describes the way the drives are structured!

The ZBimmers collect a tank-of-gas donation for charity at each drive. It’s a small way to share their good fortune in being able to cruise around the countryside in those magnificent driving machines. Donations now total almost $30,000!

There are two standout experiences among the many ZBimmer activities. One drive took us into southeast Ohio. When we got to the planned rest stop, the doors to the restroom were locked. It became necessary to find an alternative as quickly as possible! We came upon a small IGA grocery store in Salineville and the workers were kind enough to let us use the employee restroom, hidden way in the back of the store. As we queued up, folks came out of the store to admire our Zs in the parking lot. One clerk even purchased a disposable camera and took pictures of them. Then he asked, “Are you all related?” We still joke with each other and ask if we’re all related.

On another weekend drive to Lexington Kentucky, we learned that things are not always what they seem, especially with a practical jokester among us. As we were cruising along, our convoy of ZBimmers was pulled over by the local authorities! Nothing like this had ever happened to us before! It turns out that we weren’t speeding but had neglected to obtain a parade permit! Our host, John Mallany, had been pranked by Jeff Ball whose relative was a county sheriff.

“It turns out that we weren’t speeding but had neglected to obtain a parade permit!”

Jeff had shared our route with his relative who made arrangements with another deputy to stop us. It sure looked official and John was beside himself with dismay which turned to horror when Jeff offered the deputies a bribe to let us go. From time to time, you can still hear the ZBimmers ask if a parade permit was obtained.

The ZBimmers continue to thrive under the leadership of Dave Fisher. He has a wonderful bunch of volunteers who step up to plan the monthly events and continue the adventures. The longevity of the ZBimmers speaks to the comradery of the members and their enjoyment of the cars.

BMW N51, N52, N54, N55 6-Cylinder Sepentine Belt Failure and Power Steering Pulley Hitting Subframe A Serpent In My BMW/MINI?

Most BMWs from the early ’90s-on and all MINIs employ the now common, serpentine type accessory drive belt systems. In deference to the older (classic) multiple V-belt system, with each belt commonly used to drive a single engine accessory (alternator, water pump, power steering, air conditioning), the serpentine system uses a single long belt to drive multiple engine accessories. As the serpentine drive system wears, it is not uncommon to begin to hear squeaking, squealing or other belt and/or pulley related sounds, indicating replacement time is near. It is far more preferable to preventatively replace the belt and pulleys prior to failure. A failed pulley or belt will, at a minimum, put the vehicle out of commission. However, as the belt derails from the pulleys, it may cause other damage as it wraps and entwines itself around the various accessories at the front of the engine. Not only is this a mess to take care of, but it may also cost more to repair due to the incidental damages from the flailing belt.

How Do I Prevent Belt Failure? Our common recommended interval for preventative serpentine belt and pulley replacement is 80,000 to 100,000 miles. On the late model BMW “N” family 6-cylinder engines (N51, N52, N54, N55), we recommend 60,000 mile belt and pulley replacement, or sooner, if inspection shows ANY belt or pulley wear.

Here’s why:The N-series engines add a bit of urgency to the belt and pulley preventative replacement idea. Unlike other BMW engines, these engines do not have a balancer wheel between the crankshaft pulley (the serpentine belt drive pulley) and the engine’s timing cover. This can allow an errant belt (one that has come apart or is being derailed by a failing pulley) to slip between the pulley and the timing cover, to the crankshaft hub and oil seal. At a minimum, the oil seal can be damaged. However, it is not uncommon for the belt to be “sucked” into the timing cover, past the oil seal, and into the timing chain. If this happens, the timing chain will derail and cause the camshafts to become “untimed”, likely causing valve to piston contact and catastrophic engine damage.

Additionally:When used in the E90/91/92/93 3-series chassis, the N-series engines can experience contact between the power steering pulley and the engine sub-frame. This can damage the pulley and/or the belt, resulting in the scenarios noted above. Therefore, additional detail in belt and pulley inspection is called for on these models.

BavAuto prefers and recommends the CRP (Continental Rubber Products) replacement serpentine belts and belt/pulley replacement kits (everything you need in one box). The pulleys in the CRP replacement kits are manufactured by INA, the original BMW manufacturer.
