IN MEMORY OF ISHBEL DIAMOND

It is with great respect, gratitude and love that we mention in this month’s newsletter the passing of our beloved founder Ishbel Diamond.

Ishbel Diamond founded Diamond House nearly 20 years ago, and without her hard work and commitment to us, we wouldn’t be standing so strong today and have the passion we have to continually

build on the foundations she built. She will be dearly missed and our condolences go out to her family at this time.

A few members who had the great chance of meeting her have written down some of their memories to share with us all.

Les’ Story

I was fortunate enough to meet Ishbel Diamond at our birthday party. I told her that I was

teaching Tai Chi here and she showed so much interest in me, asking questions about Tai Chi and how the

members had taken to it.

I told her that I was a volunteer and I was thinking about becoming a member. She told me I would be an

asset to Diamond House and wished me the best of luck. I mentioned to her that I got so much from here

as well.

I Will never forget our conversation on that day and I will never forget that beautiful lady.

By Les

I will never forget having Ishbel come in to Diamond House and reminding her every time to sign

in and out with a smile on my face. She will be missed.

By Karen-Lee

Our Angel, Ishbel Diamond

On behalf of the staff and members here at Diamond House, we would like to say a big thank you,

with gratitude to the late Ishbel Diamond who is responsible for our Clubhouse, S.A. Inc., opened in 1996.

Ishbel Diamond passed away peacefully on the 21st of March. Ishbel was an inspiration to us all and she is

recognized for what she has done for people with a mental illness. She will always be remembered and

sadly missed. Ishbel will be in our hearts forever. Our condolences go to her family and friends.

Rest in peace, our Angel Ishbel.

By Sophie and David I.

Ishbel Diamond

Ishbel was a wonderful, warm, kind person. She was also a campaigner for social justice,

especially for people with a mental illness. She fought for Clubhouse and succeeded in establishing it.

Ishbel was a courageous spirit, a strong spirit who battled physical illness for many years. She and her

husband Ian and son Tim supported and encouraged members and staff members at Diamond House.

Ishbel’s name and memory will live on in the Clubhouse she founded and the great love she showed to all

who knew her.

Esther Says Goodbye

Thank you Ishbel for the walls and the building you made for us here at Diamond House. Thank

you for the gifts and strength you have prepared for us. All I want to say is that you encouraged us with a

place that is safe and can spend time in a family atmosphere. That we can spend time and pull through with

you. Enjoy the good times. Your strength and courage has a meaning to keep fit and going like you. And

never give up.

DIRECTORS CUT

March has been a mixed month for the Diamond House community. Nina, Karen-Lee and myself travelling to Brisbane to attend the 3 week Clubhouse training at Stepping Stone Clubhouse. This is the first time that we have been in a position to send staff and members to the training but we believe that it has been well worth the investment. We were able to share ideas and network with other Clubhouses including Billabong (in Tamworth), Pioneer (in Sydney), Toowoomba and Stepping Stone. Each Clubhouse had to develop an action plan for the next 12 months which for us will help to prepare for the Accreditation process over the next 2 years and also help to fine tune the Work Ordered Day. It was an enlightening & challenging trip which has made us more determined that we build Diamond House into a thriving and vibrant Clubhouse in the years to come. A big thank you to Toni, Brenton, Jackie, Italo, Cara (student placement) and the members who had to step out of their comfort zones, take on more responsibilities and support the staff while Nina & I were away. On a much sadder note our founder Ishbel Diamond passed away in early March leaving a wonderful legacy in Diamond House. Ishbel spent years lobbying to get funding to set up a Clubhouse back in the early 90’s so that people with mental illness, their families and carers could have “a safe place to work and return.” During recent conversations with Tim, Ishbel’s son, he spoke about Ishbel years when she lived in Hong Kong (from 1971-1985) as a colonial house wife she set up a wive’s club of which more than 2000 women were members. Tim remembers visiting his mother in hospital when she first became ill with cancer to see her surrounded by a room full of flowers from all the women and her friends showing their appreciation and concern. Diamond House has now evolved into a respected community mental health program that provides psycho social rehabilitation services and promotes recovery oriented principles, to 25—30 people a day. Staff and many members attended Ishbel’s funeral last Monday and we were proud to hear her family and friends tell us the amazing things that she had achieved during her life and what a beautiful unassuming woman she was. Her memory will stay strong both in Diamond House itself and in our hearts. We also are very thankful to the people who donated money to Diamond House instead of flowers in remembrance of Ishbel. Tim also believes that his mother would think “these endless accolades are just ridiculous” but we think that people like to show their appreciation to such a wonderful , kind and benevolent soul. For any one that did not get to the funeral we are having a Memorial Service at Diamond House to celebrate Ishbel’s life in our garden Friday 13th April at 2.00pm. Over the next 3 months Toni & myself, in partnership with UCWPA Employment Access, will be promoting our Transitional Employment Program to employers in our quest to get our first employment placement. If you know of anyone with a café, retail shop, gardening business or require a receptionist or clerical assistant who could employ one of our members 8—14 hours per week performing basic cleaning, gardening, clerical or retail duties let myself or Toni know. We have several members who have now completed pre-employment training, are motivated to getting a job, have the skills and a great attitude.

Take care & be kind to yourself. Kim Smith, Diamond House Director

Life According to Ken Life has its ups and downs and goes round and round. Life can be a struggle at the best of times but it is important to give it your best shot. I have a long history of mental-illness. What helps me with my illness lately is attending Clubhouse to work and socialize. I also attend Grow to work through problems as a group. I have made many good friends at Grow and Clubhouse and we are in this together. I find mental illness the most challenging thing I have ever faced. I get mood swings and often psychosis. What helps me sometimes is to ride out the storm of feelings. A routine is very important because it keeps you grounded at the worst of times. I am a philosopher as you might have noticed in the Philosophers’ Corner article in this newsletter. I hope you find this article useful and good reading.

David Walks His Talk

I have attended Clubhouse since 1996; the year Diamond House officially opened. I like everything about the Club. I have made many friends here and have a really good time socializing with other members. Sometimes I stay for lunch. Currently I attend Club on Tuesdays with the help of my carers. In my own time I enjoy catching up with other friends. I am hoping to go to Queensland for a holiday with my mother in late June. Life is good and I am feeling happy.

I am willing to help anyone that needs my assistance and be there if you require my help. I am more than willing to help others out and support you along the way of your journeys. I hope this year is an exciting and challenging year for myself and everyone at Diamond House. May you all have a great 2012 as it will be for me! By Mark T.

Changes of the Season Voices in my head

The shuffling of leaves They cover the pathway

To my deeper feelings

Outside my window To the movement of the wind Something catches my eye –

Birds are bringing new seasons

Many times before I have travelled on this path

The silent side of thunder Makes me walk the tightrope

A twinkling of the eye

All the voices stop For a moment there is nothing

Then I laugh – they’re back again.

Communication Unit update:

Nina from the Communication unit recently returned from 3 weeks of intense Clubhouse training at Stepping Stone Clubhouse in Brisbane. The training was essential in order to start the accreditation process for Diamond House which gave us the opportunity to see how an accredited Clubhouse runs and to ensure we are operating to the Clubhouse standards. The development of an Action Plan occurred during this training which will support us in becoming an accredited Clubhouse and identify areas of improvement. Over the next few months the Communication unit, with the collaboration of staff and members, will use the action plan to make improvements to engage more members and have more meaningful tasks. We will do this along with our usual responsibilities of maintaining the database, reception duties, administration tasks, newsletter, outreach, banking and birthday cards. Reception training has been a recent focus in the Communication Unit to enable more member participation and has been a success as more members are engaging and interested in this role. We are also currently working towards having training for our visitor host role which involves giving visitors tours of our Clubhouse and discuss what we do. We are also introducing weekly newsletter meetings so come join us at 1:30pm each Wednesday afternoon to include your ideas and suggestions. Finally an important development and one of our current projects is making a Facebook page which we believe is essential in keeping members, other clubhouses and the general public up to date and informed about Diamond Clubhouse news and events. Our page has been launched and can now be

found on www.facebook.com/diamondclubhouse. Please like our page to receive

updates and news from Clubhouse!

Member Services Unit Report from Jackie

Jackie’s back! How about that! I continue to pick up food early every morning which goes towards lunches at Clubhouse. This involves visiting places like the Food Bank and Farmer Joes. This keeps lunches affordable. It is still $4 for a meal – usually hot – and you need to order lunch any particular day on the day in person or over the phone. On average we cater for 12 – 20 (member) meals a day. Sometimes we prepare lunches for people who attend functions in the side hall. We cater for people with special diet needs. We use nutritious, healthy, wholesome recipes. Remember also that we sell “cups of health” for 50c a glass. It is full of fresh fruit and vegetables. We also provide take-away meals for a low $3. Thanks to all those members who make the kitchen buzz!
