Capes for Kids

.

This past month, the students at Riverside Public School have been raising money for a program run by the Holland Bloorview Hospital by the name of Capes For Kids. Capes For Kids is an annual event where people from all over wear capes to show support for people with physical disabilities. Our school raised money to help the hospital buy new equipment to help support people with physical disabilities such as cerebral palsy. We hope the money we raised, helps even just a little. We would like to thank Christine Karcza for doing a presentation at our school. Our appreciation also goes out to Vicky and our parent volunteers for helping our students make some creative capes! Finally, we would like to thank Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital for helping people with these physical disabilities. Written by Michael (grade 8)

Bon Voyage to our YMCA Exchange GroupFor the past few years Riverside students have had the opportunity to travel to different places across Canada through the YMCA Youth Exchange Program.  This year our group will be traveling on April 8th to go visit our Twins in Evansburg, Alberta. The cost of the trip (travel, food and activities like Jasper National Park) are covered by a combination of the YMCA and fundraising.  We wish them safe travels and Bon Voyage and we hope to hear about their adventures upon their return.

Our twins will be visiting us from Evansburg from May 27 to June 2nd.  Students, parents and staff have been busy raising funds to support meals and activities and planning where to take our twins to highlight Port Credit and the Greater Toronto Area.  Thank-you to all Riverside students and community who have supported us so far by buying baked good and coming out to our Family Movie Night.

Eco ClubOn March 29th the Eco Club planned the Great Gulp Challenge for the school to recognize World Water Week.  Riverside Staff and students discussed the benefits of using their reusable water bottle and ways we can conserve water.  Students enjoyed counting down and taking a 'gulp' of water together!

In April the Eco Club will be planning events for Earth Day, including a school yard and community clean up.  Look forward to games being hosted by the Eco Club at the garden picnic bench during recess as the weather warms up!

IMPORTANT changes coming to SafeArrival

May 2018The Peel District School Board is currently using the SafeArrival system by Synervoice Technologies. As Synervoice has been sold to West Communications, there will be slight changes to our SafeArrival system and how you will report your child’s absence from school. The phone number to report your child’s absence will stay the same, but there are a few other changes.

Beginning May 14, 2018, all elementary school parents/guardians need to report their child’s full-day absences, late arrivals and/or early departures from school via our new School Messenger SafeArrival system.

The phone number will stay the same: 1-855-209-6155

Website has changed to: go.schoolmessenger.ca

Download a new app: School Messenger App (from Google or Apple)(please be sure to delete the old Safe Arrival app after May 11)

Please continue to use our current Synervoice system until Friday, May 11, 2018. The new School Messenger SafeArrival will be live on Monday, May 14, 2018.

Important to note:The transition to a new company and system will require parents to set up a new account with School Messenger SafeArrival as data will not be transferred from the old system to the new. More information on how and when to set-up your new account will be coming in the next month.

RIVERSIDE goes PINK on April 11

On Wednesday April 11, 2018, Peel District School Board schools will recognize Day of Pink. Unlike Pink Shirt Day, which is meant to combat all forms of bullying, we celebrate Day of Pink in Peel to specifically combat homophobia and transphobia.

“Equity and inclusion is something that all Peel schools teach throughout the year and discuss with students daily—it is embedded in everything we do,” says Peter Joshua, director of education. “Day of Pink is just one more way for us to ensure students and staff learn, work and develop in environments that are safe, equitable, inclusive, respectful and nurturing for all.”

Day of Pink began when a high school student in Cambridge, Nova Scotia, was bullied with homophobic language because he wore a pink shirt to school. The next day, hundreds of students at his school stood up to bullying and wore pink to school to show their support for equity and inclusion.

APRIL –

Earth MonthEarth Month encompasses the international celebration of Earth Day on April 22, 2018. This is the most celebrated environmental event worldwide. Initiated in 1970, this event has been considered the birth of the environmental movement.

Each year, more than 6 million Canadians join 500 million people in over 180 countries in staging events and projects to address local environmental issues. In Canada, Earth Day has grown into Earth Week and even Earth Month to accommodate the profusion of events and projects. Here are some ways that we are celebrating at Riverside: 1. Turn the lights off in your classroom.2. Go around and pick up any garbage you can find.3. Try to bring your food in a reusable container.4. Wear a green shirt.5. Don’t use your devices such as a cell phone or a computer.6. Use a reusable water bottle, no plastic Nestle bottles.7. Walk, bike, scooter, or even carpool to school.8. Plant something like a flower.9. Read a book about the environment, like the Lorax.10. With your class, write a “Don’t Litter” announcement.
