Mulch volcanoes cause problems for trees. Some local landscape companies are rou-tinely mulching in this unhealthy manner.Residents can improve the situation some-what by pulling the mulch 6" away from thetree trunks. Let your landscaper know this isnot acceptable.

MulchingTips

from Betty Long

Mulching around trees can have manybenefits. Obvious benefits are neatappearance and preventing bark damage fromlawn mowers and string trimmers. A numberof other important benefits are describedbelow. However, there are problemsassociated with improper mulching. If youare mulching, do it in a way that enhancesyour landscaping, not harms it.

Mulching materialsThere are many types of mulch: organic (ex.wood chips, mushroom compost, shreddedleaves, pine needles), inorganic (ex. plasticsheeting, rocks), and living (ground coverplants). If living mulches are used, perennialground covers are recommended, not annuals,to avoid disrupting the tree’s root system.Shredded wood/bark chips are most commonlyused, but avoid using any that smell sour.

Mulching Do’sInspect drainage. On well-drained areas, 2-4"

of mulch is adequate. Less should be usedon poorly drained areas.

If mulch is already present, check for depthand composition. Ideal is 2-4" of mediumto coarse material. Deeper is not better.Add more only if needed. Fine texturedmulch can become matted, cutting off airand water penetration. Use a rake or clawtool to “fluff” it up, and incorporate somecoarser material. A thick layer of finemulch can also support weed growth.

Mulch wide, not deep. If practical, extend themulch bed out to the drip line of thebranches or beyond. If that is not practical,at least 3' out from the trunk in alldirections will allow for proper contouringof the mulch.

Contour the mulch bed: no mulch within 6" ofthe trunk, then a relatively flat concentriccircle of mulch sloping at the edges.

Benefits of proper mulchingHelps maintain soil moisture. Evaporation is

reduced, and the need for watering can beminimized.

Helps control weeds. A 2- to 4-inch layer ofmulch will reduce the germination andgrowth of weeds.

Serves as nature’s insulating blanket. Mulchkeeps soils warmer in the winter and coolerin the summer.

Many types of mulch can improve soilaeration, structure, and drainage over time.

Some mulches can improve soil fertility.A layer of mulch can inhibit certain plant

diseases.Source: Proper Mulching Techniques, © 2004,International Society of Arboriculture, Champaign, IL.

Mulching Don’t’sDo not pile mulch against tree trunks. This

may lead to disease, insect, or rodentdamage. The critical root flare at the baseof trees should be exposed to air.

Do not mulch too deeply. Deep mulch mayhold excess moisture in the root zone, stressing the plant and causing root rot.

It is common practice to cut a shallow trencharound the mulch bed. This should bedone with caution since the feeder roots ofmost trees are close to the surface. Do notheap the soil from the trench onto the treeroots. Use it elsewhere.

Finance Committee: No report

Maintenance Committee: Les Lavin noted that after the recent two heavy rain incidents, there did not appear to be standing water in the yard, as previously observed with prior rainfalls, on the Brookline property. It was also noted that the barrier along the path had been removed after the first recent rainfall. There has been no further communication since the January 30 email from Marilyn Sucoe with regard to the St. Procopius Creek floodplain remapping. In response to a Huntington Ridge resident’s letter to Management sug-gesting installation of a connector between Naperville Park District’s Ridge Park and GTIA, Peter Bakas, Tom Masch-meier, Bill Swiderski and Les inspected the area. The gen-eral consensus of the Board was to be open to the idea, but request that the Naperville Park District prepare a definitive proposal and suggested license agreement for the Board’s review. Management confirmed that neither the GTIA Na-tionwide Insurance policy coverage nor premium would be affected should such a connector be installed. Betty Long and Les met recently to mark interior sites where Schwarz Nursery will transplant seven to eleven deciduous trees from the nursery in the early spring. Les noted that information has been received that there there appear to be new infesta-tions approaching our area which may impact some of the Spruce trees and Boxwood shrubs. Maintenance will moni-tor this situation for occurrence and remedial action. Les recommended that Management order a dozen saplings from

“Minutes” cont. from page 3the Kane-DuPage catalog for installation in the nursery. Les asked Board members to inspect and choose from among the various stone paver samples that Management had brought to the meeting. Once the choice has been made, the con-tractor will proceed to order the material to be used in the next phase of the Gazebo area renovation. Before rendering a decision on size and color, the consensus of the Board was to ask Management to locate several sites that are using this type of paver, so that Board members could visit and form a better idea as to the in situ appeal of the alternatives prior to the next Board meeting. A suggestion was made to submit a conceptual rendering of the proposed Gazebo renovation for inclusion in the Pathfinder and posting on the GTIA website.

Communication Committee: No Report. Bill Swiderski suggested publishing Board member email addresses; sub-ject was referred to the Communication Committee. Bill Swiderski suggested GTIA initiate a Facebook account; sub-ject was referred to the Communication Committee.

Parks Committee: Pat Coughlin-Schillo noted that Board member assignments for GTIA park inspections would be distributed at the April Board meeting. Susan Quasney gave a synopsis of the February Park District Board meeting. Mi-chael Olson will attend the March Park District Board meet-ing.

Old Business/New Business: None

Board Member Area Reports: Area A, Bill Swiderski reported the fence behind his prop-erty has been cut wide open again and requested that repairs be initiated to resolve the problem; the matter was referred to the Maintenance Committee for review and to recommend an appropriate course of action to take in this recurring mat-ter.

Area I, Susan Quasney suggested photographs of sump pump violations should be posted in the Pathfinder.

AdjournmentBoard Motion: There being no further business, Michael Olson motioned to adjourn the meeting, Susan Quasney sec-onded. The motion was passed by a unanimous voice vote; the meeting was adjourned at 8:40 pm.

Respectfully submitted, Paula Gleason, Recording Secretary, Signature on File

ARCHITECTURAL CONTROL IMPROVEMENT PLANTING REQUIRMENTS Warning! Planting or improving the common area must be approved by Green Trails Improvement Association Board of Directors.

Don’t plant that tree, flower, or erect that fence before reading these guidelines. Anything not approved can and will be removed.

The common area belongs to all of us and the rules and guidelines have been developed to protect our pathways from the damage caused by mature tree roots, and our citizens from shrubs with barbs.

Other guidelines are developed to aid and facilitate mowing. All of us are paying the price of any violation in terms of restricting the use of common areas, repairing damaged pathways, or causing delays in mowing.

The following are guidelines for planting or improving on the common area. Before anything is done, a home-owner must obtain written approval of the GTIA. Forms are available from C&R Property Advisors (630-210-8353) or via the web site at www.greentrails.org/gt-gov-docs.html. Your application will be processed as quickly as possible providing all information is correct. 1. No man-made objects of any kind such as fences, retaining walls, raised timber planters, play equipment,

sandboxes, dog-runs, etc., will be allowed beyond your property line. 2. No vegetable or flower gardens, or fruit trees will be allowed in the common area. 3. No hedges or hedge type bushes will be allowed. 4. All shade and ornamental (non-fruit bearing) trees must be placed a minimum of 8-10 feet from the trail. 5. All multiple low profile shrubs, plantings and low-branched ornamental trees must be placed in a planting

bed, which must be kept to a minimum. 6. All planting beds must be covered with an organic type of mulch such as shredded bark. 7. Decorative rocks, gravel, bark chunks and other bulky substances shall not be used due to possible danger

to persons and/or property when scattered and thrown by mowers. The use of boulders and large land-scaping rocks is prohibited.

8. Native wildflowers and ground covers are recommended in all bed areas for erosion control (provided the planting area is no larger than 15% of the available common area behind your home).

9. Screen utility boxes, but don’t forget to leave access.10. Sodding up to the trail will be allowed and encouraged. 11. Keep all trees a minimum of 15-20 feet from each other; multiple trees may not be contained within a plant-

ing bed. 12. Don’t place plantings in those areas where they might limit the “recreational usage” of or access to the

common area, or which will restrict mowing. 13. The improvement shall be done in such a manner that it does not enclose the common area to your prop-

erty. 14. No grading, cutting, filling, stockpiling or alteration of any grade shall be permitted anywhere within the

common area unless specifically approved by the board. 15. Any grading change will require a grading permit from the Village of Lisle.
