III. IN COUNTRY SITUATION

The United Nations warns that, “The COVID-19 pandemic is far more than a health crisis: it is affecting societies and economies at their core. While the impact of the pandemic will vary from country to country, it will most likely increase poverty and inequalities at a global scale, making achievement of SDGs even more urgent.” Assessing the impacts of the COVID-19 crisis on societies, economies and vulnerable groups in Honduras is fundamental to inform and tailor the responses of national and local governments, the private sector, NGOs, and international organizations to help Honduras to recover from the crisis and ensure that no one is left behind in this effort. GENESIS has been working for five years providing training, entrepreneurship and job opportunities among the most vulneable populations in seven cities of Honduras. Life and technical skills have been developed in the population of 70 communities and OCs support the efforts of bulding resilience in intervened communities. The COVID-19 complicated the socio-economic situation in Honduras and unleashed new waves of violence and perhaps an increase in crime and other issues that could generate instability in the nation. That is why, now more than ever, the intervention of projects like GENESIS, focused on preventing violence and generating income opportunities, especially among youth are really needed.

¨Iglesia Centro de Avivamiento camino de Santidad Internacional” Bonitillo OC in La Ceiba

The Bonitillo OC was originally opened

on October 2016, and after several

governance issues within the community,

it was re-opened on April 6th, 2017 with a

new OC partner found in Pastor Maria

Cruz from “Iglesia Centro de Avivamiento

Camino de Santidad International”.

Pastor Cruz organized the support

committee and implemented several

initiatives to advance the sustainability

and implement methodologies.

Pastor María Cruz is a local, responsible leader. She supervises OC activities

implemented by the coordinator and volunteers while also coordinating donations and

motivating volunteers to promote the values and virtues methodologies.

This partner has efficiency in the administration of agency funds to cover programmatic and management activities under the scope of the OC methodology. The coordinator is a young leader who facilitates methodologies to diverse children and

youth. He is an empathic person and is recognized as such by the community.

The support committee continues benefiting the community during the COVID-19

emergency by distributing the donations made by the private sector.

Maintain OCs closed until further notice. All technical visits and field work were suspended (this included training,

workshops, meetings with beneficiaries and massive events in the communities). GENESIS´s technicians were instructed to follow up on communities by phone

or virtual meetings to carry out actions in support of communities.

GENESIS started an initiative to register activities and efforts done by OC partners, volunteers and coordinators aimed to endure the COVID-19 emergency in their communities while monitoring community engagement since March 29. Technical facilitators supervised OC´s community activities and register data such as:

Number of positive cases Number of deceased Physical distancing practices in place Community actions to prevent COVID-19 Follow-up on government measures in their community such as lockdown

restrictions and the use of face masks Provision of food by the GOH Provision of food by local government Training and hygiene practices Provision of food by stakeholders Sources of contagion in the community. Involvement of the CODEL and CODEM. Marking social distancing line cues in local markets and grocery stores in the

community. Provision of water in the communities. Physical distancing measures applied by community members Informative actions for the community in regards to the development status of

the outbreak Monitoring OC inventory equipment and maintenance of OC installations

The information gathered and registered helped to track the effectiveness of responses in OC communities during the COVID-19 emergency. The information proved to be quite useful in decision making on donation distribution adjustment to efficiently deliver the right amount of food, face-masks, mattresses and biosafety kits, donated by stakeholders, in coordination with efforts raised by the Alliances Coordinator. The operation required OC coordinators and volunteers to specifically identify the families that would receive humanitarian aid in OC communities. GENESIS also provided hygiene and biosafety items to use while the coordinators and volunteers took charge of distributing donations on a door to door basis in their communities.

USAID-FUNADEH GENESIS Quarterly Report Q3 FY2020 ME&L 27

FUNADEH employees supported OC coordinators FUNADEH’s employees collected Lps. 30,900.00 to buy bags of food and bio-safety kits for OC coordinator to recognize their leadership in their communities. While OC’s were temporarily closed, OC coordinators have performed activities to prevent COVID19 by sharing information on social distancing measures in public places and effictively managed the distribution of donations. Coordinators also continued supporting the EDUCATEH program providing virtual training for beneficiaries using whatsapp as a resource. Strategic plan to re-open services OCs GENESIS carried out a briefing meeting with OC coordinators to discuss plans, activities and considerations to eventually open OCs during COVID-19 emergency. Requirements to do so involve the following measures:

Coordinators must attend virtual bio-safety courses on INFOP platform. OC facilities must be inspected and safety areas with social distancing measures

need to be identified (e.g. reducing the amount of seats in classrooms). OCs must have a screening area, disinfectants, liquid soap, water and footbath

for disinfection, allowing access to beneficiaries under required bio-safety measures.

Design and socialize bio-safety protocols to be implemented in OCs among beneficiaries and the community.

Training volunteers and community leaders on bio-safety protocols. While the OCs are closed, coordinators presented a plan to promote virtual

courses to beneficiaries with internet connectivity. The EDUCATEH program continues the practice of home schooling, supported

by volunteers and the educatehencasa.org platform. GENESIS launched a logistics taskforce made up of several committed collaborators. The task force was in charge of the classification, packaging and distribution of donations received by public and private sector partners. Northern Region (San Pedro Sula, Choloma and La Lima) The Regional OC coordinator follows ongoing activities with OC partners and

coordinators from the northern region to evaluate activities carried out to support

communities during the COVID-19 emergency. These are:

Follow-up to EDUCATEH Activities

GENESIS is supporting OC volunteer efforts to mitigate the immediate impact of

temporary OC´s closedowns. Particularly, volunteers and students of EDUCATEH

Program have made great efforts to continue the program form student´s homes and

through the use of the remote learning homepage http://educatehencasa.org/

On April 15th, OCs enrolled in the EDUCATEH program held a national meeting to

evaluate volunteer´s status during the pandemic and to launch a strategy to support

educational activities and monitoring their progress through digital venues.

The EDUCATEH program became more relevant during the year 2020 amidst the

COVID-19 emergency. 1,108 students enrolled in San Pedro Sula, Choloma, Tela, La

Ceiba, and Tegucigalpa continued their studies supported by 333 volunteers. No

desertions have been reported thus far. The program itself have helped mitigate the

three difficulties presented in the national education system, high desertion level, low

coverage, and over age enrollment.

GENESIS´s Volunteering and Education Specialist held weekly meetings with the

regional coordinators of the “Modalidades Educativas” from “Secretaria de Educacion-

SEDUC” to support enrollment for EDUCATEH beneficiaries. GENESIS is working on

an its internal regulation process to define the rights and duties of beneficiaries.

GENESIS maintains meetings with OC coordinators to guide them on the use of the

EDUBOX platform and created a video about updates and to reinforce learning within

EDUCATEH activities (enrollment, cumulative scores entry, Bachillerato Acelerado).

On April 30th, the Volunteering and Education Specialist held a meeting with the

Education and Innovation Network from Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo-BID and

provided insight on the activities to support EDUCATEH and its online program.

On May 19th, the Volunteering and Education Specialist held a virtual meeting with the

director of “Grupo POPA” to research their educational platform and evaluate its virtual

lab to support EDUCATEH.

On April 25th, GENESIS held a virtual meeting with TIGO to secure support to

EDUCATEH’s beneficiaries and volunteers by providing them free Internet connectivity.

On May 27th, the GENESIS team held a meeting with DAVIVIENDA representatives to

introduce them to the EDUCATEH program.

RESULT 2.1: INCOME GENERATION AND EMPLOYABILITY OPPORTUNITIES INCREASED FOR AT-RISK YOUTH GENESIS works closely with CASM, CASW, INTUR, Graphic Source, Lear Corporation, Green Valley, ECOLAB, EDUKTIVA, and Molineros Industrial, all private sector organizations, as well as universities and NGO´s, and local government, in order to promote employability and entrepreneurship opportunities. Follow-up activities with AHM Programmers Academy Beneficiaries The IG team and the Technologic Academies Coordinator promoted virtual training workshops to support the beneficiaries of the AHM Programmers Academy. The 4th and 5th generation of programmers attended courses related to: emotional intelligence, programming logic, pep talk, and Microsoft Certifications.

USAID-FUNADEH GENESIS Quarterly Report Q3 FY2020 ME&L 51

The AHM is an organization with more than 300 affiliates of the manufacturing industry and other sectors that have been directly affected by the pandemic. Affiliate contributions have stopped and due to lack of resources, they´ve had to put a temporary stop to the Programmer’s Academy project. The support received from BI Technologies has also been affected. GENESIS is looking into a way to support the AHM and manage to close their process with the 2nd generation. Another group of AHM academy´s beneficiaries have been developing a data base for the IG process. A special team is designing a homepage for an online training platform which also includes curricula courses for entrepreneurs and employability education. Follow-up on Grupo INTUR activities On April 30th, the IG team confirmed the enrollment of 11 beneficiaries in “Instituto INTUR” in Tegucigalpa. The number of students were down during this emergency, some of which battle with the resource of internet connectivity to do homework, while others were suspended from their jobs. The IG team monitored progress of students of “Instituto INTUR” in MIA academies in Tegucigalpa.

Follow-up on Centro de Formación Profesional San Juan Bosco Follow-up activities for the construction of technologic room-space in San Juan Bosco Institute were done amidst the challenge of the lockdown imposed by COVID19. A subgrant is being prepared in order to conclude this important commitment to the development of vulnerable youth.

IND 2.1.1: NUMBER OF AT-RISK YOUTH BENEFITED THROUGH INCOME GENERATION AND

EMPLOYABILITY

During this quarter, the IG team took upon the challenge of the COVID-19 emergency

by actively providing and promoting online training courses as an alternative to continue

supporting employability and entrepreneurship beneficiaries. 361 youth (female 177 and

male 184) were directly benefitted through this initiative.

Despite connectivity difficulties, beneficiaries stayed motivated by attending online

courses as a means to stay on top of enriching their knowledge and acquire new skills

to prepare them for future employment opportunities as well as the creation of small

businesses or self-employment.

It is important to mention that due to the pandemic, there were no entrepreneurship kits

delivered this quarter, as there was an imminent challenge to purchase equipment and

deliver the kits under the right safety measures. However, an enriched online webinars

program was launched by the IG team with at least two courses averaging per week.

USAID-FUNADEH GENESIS Quarterly Report Q3 FY2020 ME&L 52

Some of the online webinars provided were the following:

1. Entrepreneurship amidst times of crisis

5. Emotional intelligence

6. Efficient negotiation

7. Sales pitch

8. Online business models

9. Arts and crafts techniques

A virtual Expoferia was also held during this time, with entrepreneurs showcasing their

products and services in a virtual content.

Remarkable activities

OLIMPIADAS ACADEMICAS VIRTUALES

Despite the fact that OCs are closed-down, the students kept their online classes supported by volunteers, so that GENESIS

stepped ahead with the proposal of the first edition of "Olimpiadas Academicas Virtuales.” This initiative was done to generate

virtual participation spaces for the recognition of efforts for alternative education students, promoting the use of technology in the

students of the EDUCATEH program.

This innovative action motivated students to enhance the artistic creativity through declamation and poetry and the Specialist

Education and Volunteers prepared the rules of participation, OC volunteers and coordinators guided students for inscriptions

and preparation. This competition was divided into four-day activities:

Day 1: Poetry Declamation: Artistic creation was enhanced through declamation and

poetry to promote values and virtues and celebrate Honduran poetry writers. Evaluation

criteria for this activity was oral expression, gesture expression and artistic attitude.

Day 2: Spelling Contest: In order to promote the development of linguistic-
