IF YOU enjoy the ocean but hate getting wet or the thought of sharks has kept you out of the water, stand up paddleboarding could be just your thing.

Stand up paddleboarding (SUP), where you use a paddle to propel a long board over open water such as the ocean, rivers or lakes, is growing in popularity. Local enthusiast Brewer Kriel recommends it for the great work out it provides as well as the sports’ versatility. “You can do it on flat water or use it to catch big waves, there are different boards available for different ap-plications,” he says.

While the sport has yet to make an impact in East London - there are no official instructors and boards have to be pur-chased out of town – here is a closer look for those interested in giving it a try.

According to Paddler.co.uk website stand up paddleboard-ing may have its origins in Peru - where fisherman over the last 3 000 years have used a craft and propelled it using an elongat-ed bamboo shaft, rather like a kayak paddle, from which to fish.

Modern SUP appears to have its roots in Hawaii with those radical surfers looking for something new to try or a way of training when the surf is down. According to the Paddler.co.uk website, the father of modern SUP is believed to be John Zapo-tocky. He moved to Hawaii in the 40s and adopted the practice in favour of surfing. Zapotocky was 93 when he died last year and even in his nineties was a familiar sight out on the ocean on his board, paddle in hand.

SUP provides a great core work out and allows for increased visibility both above and into the water (all the better for keep-

ing a look-out for sharks). While paddlers may love that they can catch a wave earlier than surfers, Brewer says to remember eti-quette when out in the surf “don’t hog the waves and remem-ber your 11-foot board is a danger to surfers”. “On days when the surf is crowded, rather take your paddle and board to a quieter break,” he says.

SUP suits people of all ages – it is a low impact activity and a great way to enjoy the water. As well as being core-engaging, if done properly it uses almost all muscles (especially arms) and is a great way to improve balance. Although the act of balancing on a board looks tricky, according to the experts, most people master the skills needed to stay upright and propel themselves forward in within an hour.

Once you are up and able to balance on the board – the mind and body relaxes and stress just melts away.

Give paddle boarding a try. It's healthy, improves your fitness, works your core muscles, burns calories like nothing else and allows for hours of fun in the waves or on flat water. Sounds tempting!

Wind farms

WHAT IS WIND ENERGY?Wind energy is one of the oldest forms of renewable energy generation. Wind turbines are erected in areas that have the right conditions to harness prevail-ing winds. The winds move the large blades of the wind turbines and hereby the process of converting the kinetic energy of this movement into mechani-cal energy begins. The generator within the wind turbine then converts this me-chanical energy into electrical energy that is transmitted to the electrical grid.

DID you know that we have six wind farms in various stages of completion within a 400km radius?

1. Chaba Wind Energy Project: 7 turbines: 6km east of Komga

2. Amakhala Emoyeni Wind Farm: 56 turbines: near Bedford

3. Dorper Wind Farm: 40 turbines: near Molteno

4. Waainek Wind Energy: 8 turbines: outside Grahamstown

5. Grassridge Wind Energy: 20 turbines: near Addo

6. Kouga Wind Farm: 32 turbines: near Jeffrey’s Bay

ADVANTAGES:• Wind is free and in abundance and we have

the technology to capture the power of wind efficiently

• The costs for wind turbines are only initial costs; once the turbine is built there are minimal maintenance costs which are involved.

• In the rural areas which are not connected to a country's power grid it can be used to generate its own power.

• The space which a wind turbine takes up on land is very small as the moving parts are quite a distance above the ground.

• Wind turbines produce energy with minimal damage to the world’s environment and produces "clean power".

The What’s On

EvEn the most perfect lives can be shattered in an instant. In this moving, emotionally charged novel, Danielle Steel introduces readers to an un-forgettable cast of characters striving to overcome tragedy and discover the inner resourc-es and resilience to win at life—once again. Lily Thomas is an aspiring ski champion training for the Olympics, a young woman with her heart set on winning the gold. But in one moment, Lily’s future is changed forever, her hopes for the Olympics swept away in a tragic accident. Dr. Jessie Matthews, the neu-rosurgeon who operates on her that night, endures a tragedy of her own, and instantly becomes the sole support of her four young children, while her own future hangs in the balance.

Bill, Lily’s father, has pinned all his hopes on his only daughter, his dreams now shattered. Other lives will entwine them-selves with theirs: Joe, a financial manager, faces a ruined career at the hand of a dishonest partner. Carole, a psychologist at Mass General, is a breast cancer survi-vor, her body and heart scarred by what she’s been through. Teddy, with a spinal cord injury worse than Lily’s, dreams of college and becoming an artist. From the ashes of their lives, six people fight to alter the course of destiny and refuse to be defeated. When Bill builds a remarkable rehab facility for his daughter, countless lives are forever altered, and each becomes a winner. Winners is about refusing to be beaten, no matter how insur-mountable the challenge. And when Lily gets on skis again and enters the Paralympics, the battle to brave life again is won. Winners is about more than sur-viving, it is about courage, victory, and triumph. When all appears to be lost, the battle has just begun.

3 April. An Audience with Pieter-Dirk Eish at the Guild Theatre from 7.30pm. AN AUDIENCE WITH PIETER-DIRK EISH takes the form of audience choosing the content. 15 boxes on stage - each is num-bered and they create the show by choices. A cross between PICK A BOX and REALITY TV! Fifteen cardboard boxes on stage. Each filled with characters and stories. And Pi-eter-Dirk Uys. That’s all the visual required to make turn his latest show into an eve-ning to be talked about long after the fact. Now in his late sixties, Pieter-Dirk Uys can vividly recall the recent history of South Africa with ease and is probably the most up to date person on current South African politics. He engages his audiences, speak-ing to the young, the expat, the gay and the gatvol. “An Audience with Pieter-Dirk Eish” is just that. With the choice of fifteen boxes on stage, a member of the audience chooses a number. Out come characters and entertainment that could be either a drama, a comedy, a farce or a shocking ex-pose. Every box holds a familiar laugh, all truly South African! Uys is on stage shar-ing a life that reflects the lives of so many of his audiences, memorable experiences growing up in South Africa then and now, and doing sketches of various characters and their unique stories, some of them harking back to that dark past; most of them trying to make sense of this crazy

future. Only every night the show and the characters will be different. Tickets R150 and available from Computicket.

7pm, matinee on Wednesday 16 April at 3.30pm. Tickets R50 adults, R30 learners and pensioners, and can be booked at the Guild Theatre (043 743 0704). Hudson Park High School has chosen Godspell as its musical production this year. Directed by multi-award winning director, Pierre Perold, Godspell is written by Stephen Schwartz and is based on a novel by John-Michael Tebelak.

The musical is composed of a series of parables, mostly based on the Gospel of Matthew. Three of the featured parables are recorded only in the Gospel of Luke. The parables are interspersed with a vari-ety of modern music set primarily to lyrics from traditional hymns. The passion of Christ features briefly near the end of the performance. Godspell is more relevant now, than when it was first performed. It reiterates our morals, beliefs and faith, which are severely lacking in our modern society.

Perold has breathed new life into the mu-sical and, along with a talented cast of 15 pupils, promises to entertain and to leave a message that will stay with one long after the actors have taken their final bow and the houselights come on. The cho-reography is by Natalie Oberem and the musical direction by Rosanne Lesch. A dis-count is available for block bookings. ANN BRYANT MAIN GALLERYTHE Friends of the Ann Bryant and the East London Fine Art Society are collaborating to celebrate World Art Day on the Thursday 17th April 2014 at 6.30pm. An entrance fee of R20.00 per person will be charged for the opening evening. J H Pierneef Station Panels are cornerstones of South African landscape painting. They were placed in the old Johannesburg Station as adverts to travel the country.

But did these alluring places ever really exist? And how have they changed?

Taking up the invitation to travel 80 years later, Carl Becker set off to find out. Photographer Monique Pelser is the artist behind the images on display. See you there!

About the work: In the early 1930’s J.H Pierneef - the most influential and prominent historical South African landscape painter - was commissioned by the railway services to travel South Africa and paint select sites reached by the capillary railways. Famously known as the Johannesburg Station Panels, these paintings depict scenes of mining,

industry, seaside villages and sprawling uninhibited landscapes. The panels, which were exhibited in the concourse of the Johannesburg Railway Station until the abolishment of the apartheid government in the 1990’s, were intended to create the effect that the station was the gateway to a glorious and unknown landscape.

Pierneef spent days in the various sites making watercolour sketches and gathering visual data. He would then go back into his studio and construct an ideally composed painting. These photographic studies form part of a larger process of tracing, pinpointing the perspectives and photographing the iconic landscapes.

In addition to the photographic prints there are digital screens documenting studies of how the camera responds to the shifting light. These works are new photographic studies made in response to the process Pierneef went through making observational sketches of the site and the surrounding environment.
