Nashville Flood Response wins ASCE Tennessee Section’s “Outstanding Engineering Project of the Year” September 23, 2011 –The Nashville Flood Response won the Tennessee Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers award for 2011 “Outstanding Engineering Project of the Year”. The award was presented at the Annual ASCE Tennessee Section Meeting and Luncheon at the Smyrna Town Center in Smyrna, Tennessee. In nominating the city of Nashville’s Flood Response, ASCE President Ashley Smith stated the award was for “…the tremendous effort put forth by city officials to recover from the devastating May flooding”. “It is an honor to receive this distinguished award, “said Mark Macy, “Nashville’s flood response was an excellent example of how dedicated people working together can produce highend results to protect residents and their community. “ Mark Macy, Metro Nashville Public Works Assistant Director – Engineering and TCAPWA President accepting the “Outstanding Engineering Project of the Year” award on behalf of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County Public Works Department from Russell Moorehead, ASCE TN Section President.

Metro Nashville Wins APWA Project of the Year Award 

September 19, 2011 ‐ Mayor Dean, Public Works Officials Accept National Honor At Conference in Denver 

The Metro Nashville/Davidson County Government 2010 Flood Recovery Effort was recently selected as one of the American Public Works Association’s (APWA) “Public Works Projects of the Year.”  

The awards are given annually to recognize contributions and achievements in the public works field.  Nashville Mayor Karl Dean and officials from Metro Public Works attended the 2011 International Public Works Congress and Exposition September 19‐21 in Denver to accept the award.   Of the flood response and city employees, Mayor Dean said, “The people of Nashville rose to the challenge: 20,000 volunteers filled our city’s streets in the weeks and months after the flood waters receded, but before the first citizen stepped up to volunteer, our Metro employees were on hand doing what they had been trained to do in the case of such a disaster.  It was in this moment that our employees who are great at accomplishing the ordinary showed us that they are capable of achieving the extraordinary.”
