EDITION 2OO8

THE EPOXY SYSTEM RESINA 2000How to protect and repair your boat.If we want our boat to take us on our sea outings for as long as possi-ble and to let us enjoy continuous contact with nature, we must give itall the attention it deserves. Seasonal protection and maintenance areessential to ensure a long and carefree life of the boat. And lf the boatis made of wood, a material as noble as it is delicate, we must takespecial care.Veneziani has always been a name of reference for the nautical world, has been manufacturing boat paints for over a century and has now de-veloped a revolutionary Epoxy System consisting of Resina 2000 andits additives. This system is very practical and versatile and provides a vast numberof applications on wood, fibreglass and metal structures as well as manyuseful applications for repairs in other fields.Of course this manual is not intended to provide an answer to every-thing, or to teach you how to build a boat. However if you leaf through it,you will find plenty of ideas on how to solve your boat problems using theVeneziani Epoxy System, even those that might arise during navigation. We have tried to describe the operations to be carried out as clearly andin as much detail as possible, taking into account both the quality ofthe final result, and the financial and practical aspects of the work. Finally a recommendation. When faced with demanding and difficulttasks, do not overestimate your capabilities. lf the work load is too dif-ficult, it is certainly wiser to turn to a specialized and properly equippedboatyard. In this case the manual shall be useful for comparing our sug-gestions with the work carried out.

This system consists of Resina 2000 andits additives: MICROFIBRE, MICROSFERE,MICROSILICE, ADDITIVO 2000 LT, TESSU-TO DI VETRO and CARBONIO with differentweights, which can be combined accor-ding to the required use.

RESINA 2000RESINA 2000 is a 2-pack, sol-vent-free epoxy resin, which hasexcellent impregnating power aswell as high flexibility, hardnessand adhesion, properties whichconfer outstanding resistance tofresh and salt water. Before usingRESINA 2000, mix the base andthe hardener. It is very importantto use exactly a mixing ratio of2:1, without changing it, becauseotherwise the properties of theepoxy resin could be affected.Pour 2 parts of base and 1 partof hardener into graduated cylin-

ders in order to obtain maximumprecision. When the dosage iscompleted transfer the content in-to a low and wide container in or-der to facilitate heat dispersionduring mixing, and mix the con-tent thoroughly. A wide containeralso facilitates the immersion ofbrushes and rollers.Never add thinner to RESINA2000. For the cleaning of theequipment only use DILUENTE5610 for epoxy products.Since the pot-life of the mixedproduct is only 30 minutes at 20°C, prepare limited quantities(about 750 ml). The pot-life of atwo-pack product is the time, af-

2 THE ADDITIVES

MICROFIBRE Synthetic microfibers

CHARACTERISTICSMICROFIBRE belongs to the ran-ge of additives to be mixed withRESINA 2000 in order to producecompounds with different proper-ties. MICROFIBRE consists of mi-crofibers with an average lengthof 500 microns, which, when

mixed with RESINA 2000, createa strong compound, owing to amultidirectional internal structu-re. Due to the low absorbency ofresin, the penetration capacity ofRESINA 2000 is not affected. Themain purpose is the gluing of T-joints, where a filler with high vi-scosity and high mechanical resi-stance is required.

A humidity gauge, suitable for measuringthe humidity content in GRP and wood.

9

APPLICATIONS 3WOOD SURFACES

1 Make sure that the wood iscompletely dry in order to avoid

that humidity entrapped under thecoating shall cause rotting and inorder to ensure the best possibleadhesion of the coating system.

2 Clean the surface thoroughlyremoving all traces of oil, grea-

se or wax.

3 Sand with an abrasive paper ofa grade suitable for the subse-

quent finish. Parts to be gluedshould be sanded in different di-rection in order to obtain a surfa-ce as rough as possible.

SURFACE PREPARATION

Satisfactory results depend not onlyon the characteristics of RESINA 2000but above all on proper surface prepa-ration and application. Do not try tosave time during surface preparation:it is always time well spent. Unlessspecifically indicated otherwise, theoperations described on this page mu-st be performed prior to all tasks indi-cated in the subsequent pages. On any type of substrate, old existingcoatings must be eliminated in orderto ensure perfect adhesion of RESINA2000.

GRP AND METAL SURFACES

1 Degrease with DETERSIL andrinse thoroughly with fresh wa-

ter. Do not use thinners or sol-vents, which - instead of cleaning- would spread the contaminationover the surface.

2 Paper-sand, disc-sand or sand-blast the area to be treated in

order obtain a clean surface witha rough profile.

3 Remove the dust and proceedwith the application.

Disc-sanding is one of the most effective procedures of preparing a surface for the application of Resina 2000.

ATTENTION!By resin we mean RESINA 2000 carefully mixed with thehardener.

An effective procedure to detectcontaminations with grease or oil, consists in spraying a small quan-tity of water on the surface: if thewater spreads out or is adsorbed, the surface is clean. If drops areformed the surface needs additio-nal degreasing.

3 APPLICATIONSWOOD PROTECTION

Wooden boats are exposed to humi-dity, UV-rays and marine fouling, agents which may cause the deterio-ration of wood, especially in the caseof poor maintenance, and can affectthe original mechanical resistance ofthe planking, impairing the reliabilityof the boat. The application of a protective coa-ting with Resina 2000 offers severaladvantages:• It forms an barrier impervious tomoisture and oxygen, the agents whi-ch cause the deterioration of wood.• It creates a suitable base for thesubsequent coating system.• It does not affect the flexibility andthe natural movements of the wood.

11 After surface preparation pro-ceed as follows:

22 If the wood is new apply, im-mediately after surface prepa-

ration, 1 coat of FIBRODUR, asealer which penetrates deeplyinto the wood fibers and enhan-ces the adhesion of RESINA2000. Sand with 180 grade paperand remove the dust.

33 Apply RESINA 2000; the appli-cation can be carried out with

brush or roller owing to the fluidityand the good levelling capacity ofthe product.

44 Apply at least 2 additionalcoats of RESINA 2000 in or-

der to ensure proper protection. The theoretical coverage is about10 m2/l and the thickness percoat about 100 micron. With 3coats one can apply 300 micron, which is the minimum indispen-sable thickness for underwaterareas. Usually for the first coatmore paint is required than forthe subsequent coats.

55 If necessary, carry out the fil-ling between the 1st and the

2nd coat, using a mixture of RE-SINA 2000 and MICROSFERE.

WORK BETTER AND FASTER• For better results apply morethin coats rather than fewer thickcoats.• For large areas use foam rol-lers, which allow a quick andclean job, without sagging or airentrapment. Use light, “criss-cross” strokes to ensure an evencoating without sagging and wa-stage.

• To remove any air bubbles whi-ch could form, use light strokeswith a dry brush.• To avoid sanding betweencoats, comply with the recoat ti-me: minimum 10, maximum 36hours (at 20°C). Full curing to rea-ch the maximum resistance re-quires 7 days (at 20°C).• Sometimes, at high humidity orlow temperature a sticky layermay form on the surface of thecoating. To remove it, simply wa-sh the surface with fresh water. This phenomenon (amine blu-shing), which could cause pro-blems for sanding and the adhe-sion of subsequent coats, is cau-sed by floating of water solubleamines, contained in the harde-ner, the to the coating surface. After washing and drying continuewith the application as normal.

Cross the roller passes to produce aneven coating.

Final smoothing of Resina 2000. Areas below waterline: prior to the antifouling apply one coat of Adherglass.Areas above waterline: prior to Gel GlossPro apply one coat of Plastolite Pro.

RESINA 2000 IS NOT A FINISH

Since the surface painted withRESINA 2000 is very smoothand glossy, it may be thoughtthat it could serve as a finish. However, epoxy resins exposedto atmospheric agents for lon-ger periods suffer discolorationand chalking. Therefore, in or-der to preserve long-lastinggloss and colour, a clear polyu-rethane UV-resistant finish, su-ch as WOOD GLOSS or an ena-mel should be applied. For a detailed description ofpainting systems both belowand above the waterline pleaserefer to our brochure“Maintaining your Boat”, whichcan be requested from:phone +39 040 3783911fax +39 040 3783906.

ges with a cutter.

3 APPLICATIONSLAMINATIONS

Laminations consist in building anew part or in covering an existingpart with reinforcing fabrics madeof fiberglass, carbon or Kevlar matsimpregnated with RESINA 2000.

Proceed as follows:

11 Wet the surface to be treatedevenly with catalysed Resina

2000 by means of a short-hairroller or a brush.

22 Cut a piece of fabric slightly lar-ger than the area to be treated

and spread it uniformly. On largeareas there should be an overlapof a few centimetres at the joints.

33 Impregnate the fabric with anadditional coat of Resina

2000. For removing air bubblesand wrinkles often special foam-breaking rollers are used. Theadhesion may be defective onsharp edges, which should berounded previously. Remove ex-cess resin with a spatula or asmall roller.

An example of a laminated part aftercompletion.

13

3A few examples of RESINA 2000 applications for wood protection and clear finishes.

Resina 2000 can be also used for repairs and laminations with carbon fabrics.

For superstructures with a clear finish, inorder to maintain the natural appearanceof wood, use a single layer of light fabricsuch as the fiberglass mat 86 g/m2, which remains almost colourless afterapplication.

More infrequent, but very interesting isthe application of Kevlar fabrics whichcombine high mechanical strength withlow weight. This application is often usedin the construction of ultra-light racingboats.

Resina 2000 can be also used for thegluing of wooden and composite parts.

14

3 APPLICATIONSGLUING

The Veneziani Epoxy System provideseasy and fast gluing between diffe-rent boat building materials.

For gluing, RESINA 2000 must bethickened with:

• MICROFIBRE for applicationswhere higher strength is required;

• MICROSILICE for applicationswhere good resistance and easysanding is required.

For gluing follow the proceduresoutlined here below:

11 Clean and sand the parts to beglued.

22 Impregnate with RESINA 2000before gluing. This step is par-

ticularly important for wood, in or-der to ensure deep penetration ofthe resin into the fibers.Otherwise the wood could absorbresin from the gluing paste, re-sulting in a more fragile bonding.

33 Mix the resin with the additiveof choice and apply the mixtu-

re to the surfaces to be glued, taking care to level any unevenspots.

44 After gluing, apply one additio-nal coat to the joint and the

surrounding area for waterproo-fing and complete the coating sy-stem with the recommended fini-sh (please refer to the brochure“Maintaining you Boat”).

Remark! The viscosity of the mixtureshould be adapted to the condi-tions of the surfaces to be gluedtogether. Rougher surface requi-re a mixture with higher viscosity.

ATTENTION!In order to ensure per fectadhesion between the parts tobe glued, to avoid porositiesand for a clean job, excess re-sin should be pressed out andremoved. It is not necessary toapply high pressure to theparts; clamps or vices will besufficient and also prevent sli-ding.

Page 17: Aquastop int ITA - Navis Marine Paints · to produce a liquid compound sui-table for gluing of small parts and laminations. • Paste: mix 1 part of already ca-talysed RESINA 2000+

15

3ANGLE JOINTS

Angle joints are often called “T-joints” or beads and are often madeto strengthen the bond between fra-mes and planking, between topsideand deck or simply to install a shelfor a fitting. This procedure consistsin gluing two perpendicular parts andensures both pleasant appearanceand a strong joint by increasing thecontact surface.

6 Remove the surplus mixturewith a spatula in order to faci-

litate sanding.

7 Apply one coat of a mixturewith MICROSFERE which is ea-

sier to sand and provides a betterfinish.

8 If necessary, apply a suitablecoating system.

For producing an angle joint pro-ceed as follows:

1 Sand the parts to be glued.

2 Impregnate with RESINA 2000.

3 Wait for the resin to penetrateand become sticky, then apply

more RESINA 2000 mixed withMICROSILICE to the contactareas (mixing ratio resin/additive1:2 by volume).

4 Fasten the parts to be gluedand apply additional mixture

along the joint. During this step itmay be useful to use a large sy-ringe, similar to silicone tubes, especially for arched joints.

5 If necessary, shape the jointwith a round tip spatula or a

wooden stick with a tip adaptedto the radius of the desired joint.

3 APPLICATIONSFILLING

Filling is necessary for levelling une-ven spots and for repairing damagescaused by aging or accidents. The useof the Veneziani Epoxy System makethe work easier. Fillers producedwith RESINA 2000 and its additivesare solvent-free and therefore do notshrink during curing. Using MICRO-SFERE for the profiling of large areasprovides also a sound-proofing andheat-insulating barrier.

For filling proceed as follows:• Sand and clean the surface tobe treated, removing, if neces-sary, rough spots.

• Impregnate the surface withRESINA 2000, using rollers forlarger areas and brushes smallerareas.

• Prepare the filler by adding thedesired quantity of MICROSFEREto the catalysed resin. Apply thefiller with a spatula of suitable si-ze or with a bar, preferably cros-sing the passes. The maximumrecommended thickness is 10mm. If a higher thickness is nee-ded, apply several layers.

11 Mix 2 parts of base with 1 partof hardener. Stir thoroughly for

a few minutes.

22 Impregnate the surface to betreated with RESINA 2000

using a short hair roller or a bru-sh.

33 Prepare the filler by adding thedesired quantity of MICROSFE-

RE to the RESINA 2000. Mix andstir thoroughly.

44 Apply the filler with a spatula ofsuitable size.

55 Cross the strokes by 90°.

Remember• When repairing wood with spots da-maged by rot, first of all remove the de-teriorated parts with a chisel and thenapply the product.

• When filling wooden surfaces with aclear finish, it is possible to produce afiller of the same colour by mixing theresin with sawdust from the samewood.

Profiling is the filling of largeareas, common in the building ofnew boats and the repair of seve-re damages. Profiling is carriedout with special rods or bars whichmake it possible to spread the fil-ler evenly over very large areas, re-sulting in a continuous layer withvery low specific weight. This pro-cedure is usually carried out byboatyards, however if you decideto perform it by yourself, keep inmind to prepare limited quantitiesof product at a time, which ensurea longer pot-life and avoid discar-ding of unused catalysed resin.Profiling is very common on keelsand rudders, often carried out toimprove the boat’s performance.

3FITTING ACCESSORIES

Mixtures of RESINA 2000 with itsadditives are well suited for fittingdeck accessories, by gluing themdirectly to the deck or by gluing ofthe fastening screws. In the latter case, just impregnatethe screw holes with resin prior toinserting the screws. Upon curing, the screw thread in the wood orGRP will be reinforced by the har-dened RESIN 2000.

If you have forgotten to lubricatethe screws, it may be useful toheat the screw head with a wel-ding device in order to soften theresin.

With the thickened resin it alsopossible to reconstruct outwornthreads. In order to facilitate thedismantling of fittings, the screwsshould be lubricated with wax, pe-netrating spray or grease, which,if applied to the screws before in-stallation will avoid the screws tobe locked. This procedure is oftenused for the reconstruction of da-maged stanchion seats and forthe fitting of boat equipment. Moreover, this procedure willmake the screw holes watertightand avoid infiltrations

3 APPLICATIONSSMALL GRP REPAIRSThe Veneziani Epoxy system is alsosuitable for GRP repairs. Actually theapplications of this product on fiber-glass provide better adhesion thanthose with polyester resin. The main uses are the following:Repairs of delaminations.Repairs of cracks.Repairs of broken spots.Repairs of crevices.Structural reinforcements Gluing of teak staves on decks.

For these repairs proceed as fol-lows:• Prepare the surface to be trea-ted.• Degrease the surface by wa-shing with DETERSIL, a degreasingand emulsifying detergent.

REPAIRING A GRP CRACK

11 Prepare the surface by disc-sanding.

22 Apply by brush a quantity of ca-talysed RESINA 2000 suffi-

cient to impregnate the damagedarea.

33 Fit a piece of fiberglass mat, previously cut to the desired

shape. Impregnate the fiberglasswith more catalysed RESINA2000.

44 Repeat the above procedureuntil the required thickness

has been obtained.

55 Once the resin has hardened, remove any residues by poli-

shing.

66 Fill the repaired area with amixture made of RESINA 2000

and MICROSFERE.

77 For this procedure a squarespatula is recommended.

88 Once the filler has hardened, carry out the final polishing and

apply a suitable painting system.

grease with DILUENTE 5780.

22 Disc-sand the areas to beglued.

33 Mix RESINA 2000 with MICRO-FIBRE until the required visco-

sity is obtained.

44 Apply the mixture to the areato be glued with a spatula.

55 Remove the wedges andshims.

66 Join the parts and apply lightpressure.

77 Hold the glued parts in positionwith a clamp without squeezing

and remove the surplus mixturewith a spatula.

88 After gluing, fill the damagedarea with RESINA 2000 and

DETERSILEmulsifying detergent for silicones

CHARACTERISTICSDetersil is an emulsifying detergentfor silicones. To obtain maximumadhesion of paint to GRP surfaceswithout the need of sanding, it is ne-cessary to remove first all mould- re-lease agents. Since these agentscontain wax, paraffin or silicone, a

special detergent must be used. De-tersil has a dissolving and emulsi-fying action and can be usedwhenever a surface has to be clea-ned thoroughly before painting.
