Halloween

I hope you have all enjoyed a great summer. The club has certainly been busy with the Chichester Sail Campin July which saw 30 members attend,Sea Week with 60 or so members andthe successful Laser Masters openmeeting when 61 Lasers sailed. RearCommodore Gary Pearson’s birthdaywas celebrated in style at the end ofAugust with a great party, BBQ and alive band. Good to see so many peopleenjoying the free camping that comes with membership and has led to many impromptu Saturday night BBQson the balcony overlooking the twinkling lights of Hastings. Thank you to all those who supported andorganised these events.

I am very pleased to report this year that following our East Sussex Sailing Club Coastal Federation Cup winin June we also won the Junior Federation Cup at Eastbourne Sovereign Sailing Club. Very well done toNancy Allerton, Ella and Zach Hebron, Saul Harwin, James Stevens. This is the first time we have won thisfor a number of years and I think it is unprecedented to be holders of both. Well done to all our talentedsailors. The following weekend the Cadets raced against Buzz (near Princes Park) again with some winning

results –Buzz are back at PBSC on the 21st Oct and will no doubt try to regain the bragging rights from us.

Dot Krzyzan has also been the very welcome occupant of our galley since late spring. We’ve enjoyed herwide, varied and good value food choices and appreciate her and her family’s dedication to keeping us fedand watered. Please support the galley if you can – as with any commercial operation it needs a certainvolume to make it sustainable.

We are less than two months from the AGM which is on 3rd December As always this is held at 2 pm in theclubhouse after Sunday morning sailing. Please do join this for a review of the year, give us your view on howwe might do things differently for next year and then elect next year’s committee. A number of ExecutiveCommittee positions are coming vacant this year and these need to be filled for us to be fully effective nextyear. these include Rear Commodore (in charges of premises ( would suit someone with trades skills)Membership Secretary (needs a welcoming personality and standard administrative skills) and a duty officerto administer the sailing duties. The Executive committee generally meets on the first Friday evening of themonth at the clubhouse and meetings usually last a couple of hours. there are 12 members in addition to theSailing School Principal.

We also are legally required to have a bar committee to maintain our license. Responsibilities involvecoordinating the rostering of the bar on event evenings and stocking the bar from Bookers every month in thesummer and we need to add more resource to the small but dedicated group who cover this at the moment. If you can help with either executive or bar committee please email me [email protected] and I can letyou know more.

Sea Week 2017 started unofficially a couple of days earlier this year with a tandoori BBQ evening at the clubhouse onSaturday evening. Tents and caravans had already started to appear about the field during the day and around 60members enjoyed a delicious buffet prepared by Dot and the galley team.

The week kicked off officially with a Monday morning Commodore's briefing on the patio under azure blue skies and a lightbreeze, perfect weather for the morning's team games and tipping over toppers. The addition of the swim platformprovided entertainment throughout the day for some, whilst another group of budding yacht designers lead by Max Tullet, set about creating a new class of Frankenstein dinghy.First blood in races 1 and 2 of the evening race series went to Tim Humphries with Adrian and Ellie fighting it out for 2ndand 3rd.

Tuesday’ Pirate Day began with Pirate Pete and Jim Lad escaping to Wild Cat Island (the swim platform) where two teamsof intrepid cadets were required to ship out supplies of illegal grog in exchange for pieces of eight. Using a mixed fleet ofToppers, windsurf boards and a kayak, the Port team were victorious, despite the many acts of skullduggery committed bythe Starboards.Tuesday evening saw the launch of Max Tullet’ HMS Banger from the top secret PBSC research and development facility, tochallenge Tim’s grip on the sea week series title. Despite some superb helming by Max and feverish bailing by Zak Hebronto keep them afloat, HMS Banger wasn’t able to topple Tim who took another two firsts for the overall series victory, withMatt Fowler taking 2nd place in both races. For those who hadn't had enough excitement for one day, the big money bingo balls were once again released in thePevensey Bay clubhouse. An expectant and at times utterly confused crowd, competed for kudos and cash prizes.

The conditions were almost perfect on Wednesday for the ice cream cruise to Norman’ Bay followed by a reception atRonnie’ in Pevensey Bay. A steady force 3 and clear blue skies made it a great trip for the 55 sailors in 23 boats who madeit down the coast. A huge thank you to Ronnie and her assistants who laid on a selection of snacks and much needed colddrinks for the thirsty crews on the return leg.In the evening 43 boats took part in the now annual (and ever controversial) Pevensey v Eastbourne PRATT Pursuit.Congratulations to Eastbourne sailors Alison Jones (1st) Phil Hepburn (2nd) and Matt Hunt (3rd) for their podium finishes.

The weather proved less than favourable for a sail to view Airbourne on Thursday, so an armada of walkers, cyclists anddrivers headed overland to Eastbourne Sovereign Sailing Club. Lunch was provided by the Eastbourne Galley in the stylishsurroundings of their newly refurbished club house. As always the members of ESSC provided their Pevensey neighbours, with a warm welcome and some fantastic cakes! The highlight of Thursday night’ talent show hosted by Jay McNally had to be Chef Humphries’3 course a la carte menu, served up to the blindfolded Zak, Nick, Chris and Ben. The lucky diners enjoyed delights such as muscle and Nutellatapenade on a crispy Weetabix base. Yum!

A Force 4 gusting 5 on Friday meant only a hardy few took part in the topper games with the rest happy to ride the surf ofthe shore break. The rest of the day was spent by most, watching the Airbourne display over the club house and the waterbased display put on out at sea by those who braved the conditions and capsizes for what looked like an exhilarating sail. What better way to finish off a week of fun than to listen to the musical talents of the Pevensey Bay sailors who crooned(or groaned depending on which way you look at it) the night away in the bar for Friday’ Karaoke party.

Sea Week 2017

Finally a big thank you to all those whohelped both in front and behind the scenesto make this year's sea week the fun filledweek it was.

If you missed out this year, make sure to getthe dates in your diaries for next year whenSea Week 2018 takes place between the13th and 17th of August.

SUMMER CAMP 2017

This year’s Summer Camp kicked off as usual with everyone meeting up for breakfast at the ChichesterSainsburys before all heading off together to set up camp at Cobnor.

The weather during the week was a little changeable, but due to Roger Humphries’ excellent planningand knowledge of the area we got onto the water every day except for Friday. As usual we managedto sail to a number of lovely places in and around the Chichester harbour: On it was Bosham

for Ice-cream then Itchenor, and on to East Head and Hayling Island Sailing Club. wasEmsworth which tried out our skills of mooring to a jetty. is usually a rest day fromsailing, and people arranged to do a number of different things, some going to see the sights in

Portsmouth, others to attractions in Chichester or Fishbourne. was going to be an attemptto circumnavigate Hayling island, but unfortunately the wind was a bit strong, so we decided to picnicat East head instead; the wind reduced as we sailed leisurely back down the main channel to Cobnorand it was too nice to stop, so we carried on down to Bosham again, some sailing and some in Kelly.Ice-creams were the staple, and then we turned round to go back up the channel, at which point thewind blew up again and it was an interesting sail back! was again windy, so we all decided to

take the river taxi to Itchenor and walk round to Chichester Yacht club for lunch, very posh! gave good winds so we all sailed Thorney Channel before stopping for lunch at Hayling island

Over 30 people attended this years camp; some came just for a day or two and others for the wholeweek, but all enjoyed the experience, and joined in the communal takeaways in the evening, and

spotting the space station round the camp fire in the evenings when the Capsize Carrot would beawarded for sailing misdemeanours during the week, because believe it or not, there were no capsizes

at all during the week!

Next year’s dates for camp are already agreed: Saturday 21st July - Sunday 30th July and whoknows, maybe we will have conditions which will allow a circumnavigation of Hayling Island in 2018.

Sailing TrainingHi Everyone,

I hope you have all had a good summer and got some sailing in on the good days.

We are back in the swing with training. Cadets has already started and our youngsailors were spectacularly succesful at Eastbourne in the Junior Federation on

Saturday September 16th.

The adult level one started on Saturday 23rd and if you know anyone who isinterested please tell them to come along and give us a go. They need to bringclothes that can get wet and something to change into afterwards. The course last 5weeks, please contact me for further details. Leading up to August we had elevenattending the adult level 1 and 2 making 94 sailing sessions between them. Cadetswas also well attend making 92 sessions.

There have been multiple power boat training courses successfully run by Gordon and we have new power boat helms to helpout covering the racing. Please speak to Gordon if you would like to arrange a course.

Informal windsurfing training has also been in progress on Tuesday evenings and some weekends.

We are always on the lookout for people to help out with training. If you would like to help anyone is welcome and we wouldespecially welcome anyone who was looking towards becoming an instructor. There is some commitment but it is very satisfyingto teach beginners, see them progress into sailors and join in with the club activities.

My thanks to all the instructors and helpers for their work so far this year.

Cheers

Bill Bracey. (Sailing School Principal)

The winning team

Stanley Hamilton. 1928 - 2017

Stanley joined Pevensey Bay Sailing Club in the early 1970's and was an active member for many years both on and offthe water. He sailed dinghies and also had a racing keelboat which he kept in Sovereign Harbour. In later years heenjoyed cruising in the Bay.He was a key member of the race team during open and national championships. His job was usually firing the cannons! It was Stanley who originally bought Kellie and I found it quite poignant that on the day Stanley died (24th July) Kelliewas the featured photo from sailing camp. So he leaves us with a useful and well loved memory.

Ronnie Hall

(We used to have two small cannons that were used for starting and finishing races during nationals etc. They firedshotgun blanks! They were kept in a locked metal box and someone on the committee had to have their name on a gunlicence....They were fun and you could certainly hear them!!)

Duties for October

Thank you all who have completed yourduties this year, this is a core part ofthe effective running of the club andtypically we ask you to complete two tothree a year – most clubs are more. There have been some occasions whenduties have been scheduled and membershave not shown up. I appreciate thatjuggling commitments in this busy worldcan be a challenge but please do let theduty administrator (currently EllieRatusniak - [email protected]) know ingood time and she will seek to replaceand reallocate a duty. Whist we havenever had to cancel a sailing session, thisis down to the goodwill of members whohave forgone their sailing that particularday and jumped on a safety boat or intothe race box. Duties for the BrassMonkey’s sailing season (SundayMornings Nov and Dec) are allocatedamongst those who race. Gary and JackieKinch have kindly offered to act as RaceOfficers again for this period so we onlyhave to cover one safety boat. If you arenot sailing but fancy a Sunday Morningsession on the safety boat to blow thewinter cobwebs away - please email Ellie.

You’ll note that we have updated the amplifier behind the bar such that it can now playSD cards, access your music via bluetooth or auxiliary cable and also operates a micro-phone. Thank you James Allerton for sourcing and installing this.

We will be looking at refurbishing the club house tables over the winter so please look outfor requests to support the winter working parties during the January to March closeseason. As always we are keen to hear your views on how we can continue to improvethe internal décor.

Also we welcome the following new members who have joined us this Summer:

Sue Worthing, Barnabus Constant, John Willet, Juan Cilleruelo, Gary Stevens,Geoff Ball, Michael Riches, Cathryn Pedersen, Andrew Coulter, Steve Terry,

Stuart Cox, Kenneth Brooks, Jeremy Collier, Alistair Cameron, Adrian Losted,Ray Wood, Geoff Brooks, Stephen Kittoe and Dylan Jerorovs-Clarke,

Catherine Cattermole and Fabiana Chase.

We very much hope that you will enjoy the club.

Caravans We welcome visits from members with campervans, caravans and tents duringthe sailing season and it has been great to see such good use of the camping

field this year. Can we remind members please that that campervans andcaravans need to be taken off club premises during the non-sailing season

which is January to March

And Finally…
