Thank you for your purchase!

About This Book

In teaching my kids how to read Arabic, I found that most of the

teaching texts I came across did not provide what I thought was ample

review for letter recognition. So, I created this book of drills to give

them more practice. In addition, there are teaching notes that help you

set up a basic routine for your lessons which includes review, writing

practice, and dictation. There are flashcards, a progress chart to color in

as well as in lesson progress charts, and other aids to help you teach. At

the end, there is a certificate that you can present to your student for

learning the alphabet.

This book addresses only recognition of the standalone Arabic alphabet

forms. I hope you find it helpful. In the works is an activity workbook to

accompany the lessons, in shaa Allah.

This book consists of 12 lessons to teach the standalone forms of

the Arabic alphabet.

Check the appendix for teaching notes and aids.

The final lesson, lesson 13, is to be a final recap lesson. Look in the

appendix for suggestions for wrapping up the study of this book.

This section explains how each lesson is arranged:

Progress Alphabet Progress Chart – Each lesson has a chart that

shows which letters students have learned (black), which letters

students are working on (red), and which letters have not yet been

taught (gray). You can also use this chart to have your student recite

the alphabet in order in each lesson as review. There is also a color

in progress chart in the appendix that your student can fill in as each

letter is mastered.

Review – Each lesson begins with review. Student will review all the

letters that learned up until this point. You can choose to review

with flashcards, or use the progress chart at the top of the lesson,

or other review methods you wish.

Page 5: Arabic YES!

New Letter Drills – After review, introduce the new letters, give

student practice pronouncing the names, and then have student do

the drills to help him/her get familiar with the new letters.

Writing Practice – Next, model how the letters are written and give

student time to practice writing the letters. An easy way to do this

is to have the student copy the letters as they appear in the New

Letter Drills.

More Practice – Next, in the teaching notes, there are ideas that you

can use to help reinforce the new letters. These might be games or

other activities.

Dictation – Each lesson ends with dictation. Dictate letters and have

your student write the letter that is presented orally. Also, you may

give Arabic words and have your student write the letter that each

word begins with. This book does not explicitly teach the sounds of

the letters because the sound each letter makes can be readily

determined from the letter’s name, unlike English where the names

of some letters is very different from the sound the letter makes.

You can include more phonemic awareness in your lessons, on your

own, if you see the need or, as mentioned above, include it as part

of your dictation.

Page 6: Arabic YES!

Arabic is the language of the Quraan and the language of your

religion, Islam. So, it is important to learn how to read Arabic so you can

read and understand the Quraan and so that you can learn about your

religion from authentic religious texts. In this book, you will begin your

journey by learning the letters of the alphabet.

The Arabic alphabet has 28 letters. The letters of the alphabet have

more than one form. They have a standalone form, which is what the

letters look like when they are written by themselves. We’ll call these the

standalone form. Then, each letter has a different form based upon

whether it is in the beginning, “middle,” or ending of a word. We’ll call

these connected forms. Below, you see colored letters. They are all the

letter “baa,” the second letter of the alphabet, but the shape looks

different depending upon where the letter is in a word (Arabic is read

from right to left!)

We will learn the different shapes of each letter in Book 2, in shaa Allah.

Congratulations, alhamdulillah!

You have learned all the letters of the Arabic alphabet.

Now, it’s time to review everything you’ve learned in this book. When

we’re finished here, you will move on to the next book and learn how

each letter looks in the beginning of a word, the middle of a word and

the end of a word, insha Allah. After that, you will be ready to start

reading Arabic!

In this lesson, your teacher will test you on all the letters, in shaa Allah.

Page 20: Arabic YES!

2017 TJ Homeschooling http://tjhomeschooling.blogspot.com

1. Review: After the first lesson, always start off with some review of the previous letters.

You can use flashcards for quick review. Also, have student recite the alphabet in order, a

few times, up to, and including the letters learned so far. You might have student read a

line or so of the drill tables from previous lessons. Don’t leave the review out!

2. Introduce the new letters. Use the in-lesson progress chart, or write the letters (in order)

from this lesson on a whiteboard; Name each letter and discuss each letter’s physical

characteristics; presence and number of any dots (taa-two, thaa-three).

Point to each letter, one by one, in order, and have student repeat (alif, baa, taa, thaa;

alif baa, taa, thaa, etc - several times). (Please note: The lessons also aim to teach the

alphabetic sequence as well, but you can choose whether you want to stress that or not.)

3. Letter Drill: Do the Drill tables for the lesson. Have student read from right to left, then

top to bottom. The columns and rows are numbered so you can easily tell your student

what to read. Repeat as you deem necessary. You can also do the drills at first with your

student and then listen as he/she does the drills independently.

4. Writing Practice: Show your student how to write each letter. Have your student copy

from the drill tables onto a piece of paper. Instruct student to say the name of each letter

as it is written. The column and row numbers make it easy to assign portions of the drill

for writing.

5. Play a game such as tic tac toe, bingo, bang, etc to help student further practice the new

letters. See http://www.sightwords.com/sight-words/games/ for game ideas that you can

adapt for letters. (Flashcards and Bang! Game cards are provided in this book). You could

also do an art activity. Get creative and have fun!

6. Wrap Up: Dictation: Dictate the new letters and have student write each letter as it is

said. You may also give the student Arabic words (see Appendix 3 for word lists or use a

quraan or book of hadith for words) and have him or her write the letter that the word

starts with. As your student learns more letters, be sure to dictate previous letters as

well. Have student write in neat lines and at various points, you can have student read

back what has been written so far to provide additional review.

Page 21: Arabic YES!

2017 TJ Homeschooling http://tjhomeschooling.blogspot.com

More Practice. Here are some optional activities that you can assign to your student to be

completed as “homework” at another time of the day:

1. Give student a sequencing worksheet. Student must supply the missing letter in various

alphabetical sequences.

2. Have student read through the drill tables again.

3. Writing practice: Have student write the letters in pyramid form: line one - “alif,” line two

– “alif baa;” line 3 “alif, baa, taa;” up to the latest letters learned.

4. Play a game with the letters with your student.

5. Review alphabet flashcards for letters learned so far.

Page 22: Arabic YES!

Ideally your student would learn Arabic from a native or fluent Arabic

speaker. In the absence of that, this list can provide an approximation of

the letter names/sounds and you might want to supplement your

lessons with audio of a native speaker pronouncing the letter names.

Simple final testing ideas:

Have student recite the entire alphabet in order (if you have

emphasized alphabetical order)

Flash flashcards of all the letters and have student respond with

the names. You can also go back and select a row/column or two

from each lesson and have student read them.

Give student dictation on all the letters (randomly) and have

student write the letters.
