ARABIC SUMMER
LANGUAGEINSTITUTE
The Arabic Summer Language Institute
implements an innovative language
curriculum which is simultaneously task-based
and content-based, creating a rich learning
environment that simulates immersion while
on campus. Students effectively live in an
Arabic-speaking environment during their
time at Maryland, with approximately fi ve
hours a day of structured language-learning
experiences. Students also gain language
exposure through one-on-one language
partner hours with a native Arabic speaker.
Students benefi t from a dedicated Arabic study
area fi lled with Arabic multimedia resources
and a rich variety of visiting speakers, fi eld
trips, and other formal and informal cultural
experiences which are all key components of
the program.

UMD SUMMER STUDY SCHOLARSHIPS
A number of scholarships are available for
Summer Institute attendees ranging from $1,000
to $5,000. The priority deadline for scholarship
applications is March 15th, 2012.
HOUSING
High-quality dorm-style apartment housing will be
available on campus in St. Mary’s Hall for out-of-
state and UMD students at an additional cost. Total
estimated cost to students including food, rent,
and utilities is $3,960 for a single and $3,520 for
a double room.
SUMMER 2012 TUITION COSTS
Tuition for the program is $5,800, and includes
all cultural events, language partners, and fi eld
trips. Room, board, and other living expenses are
not included. SLLC Summer Institute Scholarships
of up to $5,000 are available to offset the cost of
attendance. Additionally, offering over 200 contact
hours, this program qualifi es for the Summer FLAS
Fellowship. Contact your home institution for
details on applying for the FLAS Fellowship.

The University of Maryland’s Arabic Summer Language Institute offers an intensive language and culture program for Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced students of Arabic. The program will run from June 2-August 4, 2012 and will feature the following:

WHO SHOULD APPLY?
The program is open to all talented students
of Arabic. The average student attending will
have made a serious, long-term commitment
to learning Arabic, be prepared to study
intensively for nine weeks, and be performing
well academically at his or her home institution.
Due to the intensive nature of the program
it will not be possible to work or take other
courses during the program. The institute will
provide you with the opportunity to study with
exceptional faculty and students of Arabic from
across the country.
