1. Use

Thanks to a well-established operative experience in the energy field, BELTRAME C.S.E. has gained the information needed for realizing a new regulator for tension, P.F and reactive power, named ARC2000. The instrument has been conceived in order to reply to the complex operative exigencies we can found nowadays in the energy field. When ARC2000 is placed in a power plant it would be possible to obtain the control of P.F. or VAR, by managing the excitation of an electric machine: alternator or synchronous motor. In case of generators it allows to produce energy by respecting the hour tariff and in case of motors it allows to absorb without getting any damage. The facility of configuration is one of the most appreciated characteristics of all Beltrame’s products. Moreover, two units can be connected in parallel in order to guarantee an instantaneous Back-up of the system. ARC2000 can be interfaced with many other regulators (AVR) being equipped with an insulated output ±5V which allows to generate a signal that can be used by the tension regulators made by BELTRAME C.S.E. (S130, S160, S099, S095), and/or by other manufacturers or by the static exciters designed for alternators of huge dimensions. The use of the new control electronic card with thyristors S2010 allows a full digital regulation up to the circuits for the thyristors switching on.

2. Description ARC2000 uses a DSP microprocessor in order to control any type of alternator, it can be configured with any computer, thanks to the managing software, or through the operator panel. The removable terminal boards, screw type, located on the whole perimeter of the regulator allow an easy placing of wirings. On the upper side of the regulator is located a series of led indicating the regulator status, the eventual alarms status and the sequences in progress.

3. Communication This regulator includes various types of communication: here below is shown an example of double channel of regulation. (The broken line surrounds the system with only one control channel )

Communication with Panel PC or with a computer equipped with door RS-485 • Communication RS-232

Service communication • Communication Can-bus

Used for the internal communication between electronic cards, in case of double control channel it allows also the crossed redundancy.

4. System protection

o Signaling of the alarm status o Signaling of the block status o Exit with Watch-dog o Passage without disturbance between tension PID and current PID

5. Control

The tension regulator acquires the following measures: o Tension of Alternator o Tension of Main o Current of Alternator o Tension of excitation o Current of excitation

and, starting from the above stated, we can get the active power and reactive power. During the initial phase the system arranges the gradual excitation of the alternator up to reaching its tension with the reference of the calibrator. Depending on the habilitated inputs we can obtain the following set: • Matching with Main: the regulator makes equal the alternator tension with the Main one

• Throw of tension 1: the regulator makes equal the alternator tension with the one of the set previously indicated at “Throw of tension 1”

• Throw of tension 2: the regulator makes equal the alternator tension with the one of the set previously indicated at “Throw of tension 2”

The alternator excitation is controlled by a fully programmable PID. At the PID input is located an adder knot where the various limitations are going to act. A block diagram listing the various types of regulations is provided here attached. The PID which controls the tension is fully programmable. At the PID input is located an adder knot where are going to act the various limitations, provided by the capability curve, by the positive or negative compound, and in the end by the maximum excitation current. The PID which controls the excitation current is fully programmable. At the PID input is located an adder knot where are going to act the various limitations, provided by the capability curve and by the maximum excitation current.

9. Functioning as a tension regulator When referring to ARC2000 we can distinguish the following functioning phases:

Stand-by mode ARC2000 is connected, but it keeps waiting for a “START”. Start When the “START” input is enabled, the regulator begins the control phase by giving command to the jumper gate check and of crowbar to the electronic card S2010 which manages thyristors. The field-flashing phase get started, it pre-excite the alternator. Once the minimum tension needed for correct jumper command has been reached, the tension regulator starts the ramp phase by increasing the alternator tension to the desired set. Once the tension is equal the regulator enable the exit for the consent of parallel.

Regulation of the reactive power (VAR) The unit ARC2000, once set in this mode, keeps the reactive power at the set value. Regulation of P.F. The ARC2000, once set in this mode, keeps the power factor at the set value.

Throw of tension 1 or 2 The unit ARC2000, when is set in this mode, brings the alternator exit tension up to the reference previously set as Throw of tension 1 or 2. Once the pre-arranged value has been reached, the exit “EQUALIZATION V of MAIN” gets enabled. The device proceeds by closing the machine switch and the system will continue to keep tension to the set value. Main matching The unit ARC2000, when set in this mode, brings the alternator exit tension up to the Main tension. Once the tension has be reached, the exit “EQUALIZATION V of MAIN” gets enabled. The device proceeds by closing the machine switch and the system will continue to keep tension to the set value. It would be possible to increase or decrease the calibrator set value by modifying input “UP/DOWN 0-20mA”
